Sherman’s Fifth President: Edwin Cordero, D.C.

“You have in your possession a sacred trust. Guard it well.”

These words from B.J. Palmer have taken on greater significance since I accepted the position as president of Sherman College of Chiropractic. Not only do I have a duty to my profession as a doctor of chiropractic, but I’m now responsible for guiding the direction of a chiropractic college I believe has profoundly influenced – and will continue to shape – the chiropractic profession.

During the search process and in the weeks leading up to the beginning of my presidency, I had much time to consider my vision for Sherman College.

Through my interviews, research, and conversations with friends, I have since learned that Sherman’s doctor of chiropractic program is rich in philosophy and unique in its approach to health care.

Sherman graduates have a reputation for “good hands,” for being highly skilled in their delivery of the chiropractic adjustment and for “getting” and embracing the philosophy of chiropractic.

Now that I’ve joined the family I can assure you Sherman provides students with a well-rounded chiropractic education – rooted in the philosophy, science and art – that prepares them to become chiropractors who are compassionate, ethical and successful. We will continue to provide this strong education.

I intend for Sherman College to become the preeminent chiropractic school in the world, and I look forward to increasing the visibility of the college and multiplying its impact. We’ll accomplish this in the following ways:

Where are the Miracles?

by Peter Kevorkian, D.C. Chair of the Board of Trustees “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle.

The other is as though everything is a miracle.” – Albert Einstein I remember the emotional swells that would erupt inside me when I was a student and I heard the miracles that would occur after a spinal adjustment. As I moved through my education and immersed myself in chiropractic philosophy, this passion became a drive to want to “heal the world” with chiropractic care.

Through the learning process – reading, lectures, questions, discussions and at times, heated arguments – I became aware of a lack of congruency in my logic. I realized that chiropractic doesn’t create miracles; only life creates miracles. Chiropractic creates the optimum conditions for life to do what only life can do.

Recently, a woman brought her five-year-old son, Johnny, into our practice for care. He had been diagnosed with nystagmus. He had been to numerous physicians and specialists, and the mother was “giving chiropractic a try” before subjecting her son to the recommended surgery. After an initial consultation and a chiropractic orientation, she realized that her entire family would benefit from chiropractic care. So Johnny began care, along with his two siblings and his mom. After about a month, the mother noticed that Johnny seemed to be walking better and tracking better with his eyes. Other family members observed and remarked on the same changes. The Sherman College Crest and its Meaning The Sherman College crest is based on heraldic symbols. A heraldic coat of arms is different from a family coat of arms in that a heraldic coat was usually placed over the armor of knights or noblemen to help identify them and what they stood for. The Sherman crest contains these symbols and colors: Colors  Blue: truth and loyalty  Maroon: patience and victory  Gold: generosity and elevation of the mind

Symbols  The lion represents bravery and strength  The vol (set of wings) represents swiftness and protection  The Fleur-de-lis represents purity and light  The sun represents the fountain of life  The hands represent faith, sincerity and justice; specifically, the chiropractic hands represent a healing force The motto in the bottom banner, Prudentia et manus, is Latin for “by skill and by hand,” honoring the roots of the chiropractic profession.

Kersh Leading Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) Program

Supporters Refer Students, Earn My Scholarship Credit

Following graduation from Sherman in 2009, Jillian Kersh, D.C., entered private practice with fellow alumna Bryn (Holm) Gillow, D.C., in Brodheadsville, PA. While she loves practicing and still maintains a small private practice, Kersh wants to foster the growth of the chiropractic profession in a different capacity.

In fall 2012, winter 2013, spring 2013 and summer 2013, college alumni and supporters continued to refer students to Sherman. Thanks to each of the following supporters who sent students, thereby earning My Scholarship credit:

“The heart of the ROAR program is to get passionate chiropractors in the field talking to prospective students and sharing their excitement for Sherman and the chiropractic profession,” she says.

“Mentoring others to become chiropractors will expand the amount of people you can help and influence ten-fold, and ROAR is a resource to do just that.”

Another facet of the ROAR doctor responsibility includes fostering the students referred to Sherman, guiding them through the application process and answering questions, as well as keeping in touch and encouraging them during their studies once enrolled. “We are here to help guide students during their time with us and keep their passion for chiropractic alive,” Kersh says.

“We are on the brink of exciting growth in the chiropractic profession as many people embrace living a wellness lifestyle.

I encourage doctors in the field to use their time spent with patients and in the community to share how the journey of becoming a chiropractor could be the best decision they will ever make.”

Sherman College representatives are packing their bags in preparation for a busy fall travel season. The Enrollment Services staff, including Admission Counselor Tisha Gallaher, Director of ROAR Jillian Kersh, D.C., and Director of Hispanic and Presidential Initiatives Miguel Hastings, along with Sherman alumni and supporters will represent Sherman College at nearly 100 events this fall.

Prospective students experience a day in the life of a Sherman College intern during the college’s Shadow An Intern Day, held twice a year in February and July. During their visits, prospective students are paired with an intern and may observe patient visits, x-rays and health talks.

Where are the Miracles? (continued from page 3) Another month later, the boy’s physician discovered that the condition had completely reversed itself. He could not believe it, and said he had never seen that happen before. The mother came to the office reporting the good news and thanked us for all we were doing. Wanting to communicate my excitement appropriately, I said, “Isn’t it beautiful to watch the miracle of life do its job?”

She responded, pointing to her other two children, “Dr. Peter, the real miracle isn’t only Johnny, it’s also them. The real miracle is that because they are getting adjusted, they won’t develop many of the problems that other people will have as they grow older.” This experience was an awakening for her, and it was also an awakening for me – to realize that the silent everyday miracles are as powerful as the miracles of people overcoming a chronic disorder or an acute disease.

toms or a life-changing occurrence, it is so easy to say “chiropractic did that,” when in reality, LIFE did that.

Chiropractic removes nerve interference.

In the absence of nerve interference, and clear of subluxation, life is better able to adapt and more fully express itself. As chiropractors, when we give due respect to the beauty and infinite wisdom of life, we empower people and transform lives.

As the leader in chiropractic education, Sherman College holds in reverence and honors the miracle of life – the intelligence that organizes the universe and gives life its optimal expression. We strive to lead the college in complete congruence with that ideal and ensure that it lives in every aspect of the student experience.

Faculty Spotlight: Community Engagement

Spring Enrollment Returns Beginning in 2014 With enrollment on the rise at Sherman College, the Admission Office is re-opening spring quarter enrollments beginning next April. A minimum of 12 students must be admitted and confirmed six weeks prior to the start of the quarter (by February 17, 2014) or the class will be deferred and begin in summer. Transfer students may still enroll in the spring quarter, regardless of class size.

“Given our increases in applications and enrolling students, we saw the need to add a spring enrollment option back into the mix,” Vice President for Enrollment Services Kelley Jones Ashcraft, MBA, explains of the decision. “This will allow students who are ready to enroll in April a chance to do so, rather than putting their studies on hold until the summer quarter.”

Dean of Clinics Blends Passions for Sports, Community Adam Morrell, D.C., M.S., CCSP, has brought his passions for sports and service with him throughout his career. His assignment as dean of clinics at Sherman College is no exception, underscored by two partnerships recently formed within the local community.

A presidential agreement with Spartanburg Methodist College contracts Sherman faculty and interns to provide regular chiropractic care to SMC student athletes on their campus, and a partnership with Access Health of Spartanburg allows the college to provide free care to county residents in need.

“Sherman College students and interns are extremely well educated, and there are growing opportunities for them to put their knowledge into practice,” says Dr. Morrell of these new agreements. “Our partnership with Spartanburg Methodist College allows us to serve athletes, coaches and our allied sports health profession-

Morrell says Sherman interns participating in this program rave about applying their skills with a unique patient population and learning to work in an integrative health care environment, while the participating athletes enjoy chiropractic as part of their health and healing strategies. “Our team works hand-in-hand for the benefit of our patients,” Morrell explains. “This partnership is a winwin-win.”

In addition to the athletic program, the health center has partnered with Access Health of Spartanburg County, a non-profit organization that works with local health care providers to coordinate free care to those residents of Spartanburg County who cannot afford it.

“We are truly excited to be able to share chiropractic care as part of the community initiative with Access Health and look forward to more partnerships in the future.” Morrell says. “Our interns bring excellence and a passion for patient care that is unrivaled. Our faculty and staff are eager to lead them into new opportunities and venues to continue to bring chiropractic care to our community and beyond.”

In addition to his responsibilities as dean of clinics, Morrell teaches the Functional Assessment and Movement elective. He earned his D.C. from Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida (2006) and M.S. from Logan University (2009). He is a certified chiropractic sports physician and holds an appointment at the Medical University of South Carolina as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Neurosciences.

Hart Named Co-Investigator in Wellness Care Study Assistant Director of Research John Hart, D.C., M.H.S., was named as a co-investigator in a study on chiropractic wellness care. Research Department Represents at Local Symposium Sherman College was well represented at the Ninth Annual SC Upstate Research Symposium held at Milliken & Company. Members of the research department including Pengju “George” Luo, Ph.D., John Hart, D.C., M.H.S., and Lafayette Briggs, D.C. attended the symposium, along with several interns.

Sherman Student Awarded for Epilepsy Research Project The Research Department at Sherman has awarded a research certificate to Jasen Van Dyke, a recent graduate who conducted a research project (while he was a student) studying the correlation between chiropractic care and seizure activity, autonomic nerve function, and quality of life.

Van Dyke has seen first-hand the positive effects of chiropractic care on epileptic patients; after beginning chiropractic care, his young daughter, Lilli, experienced a dramatic reduction of seizures, and her quality of life continues to improve under regular care. In fact, after sharing Lilli’s story with other parents, Van Dyke eventually decided to leave a successful career and enroll in Sherman College’s doctor of chiropractic program, which he recently completed. Breakout sessions by presenters from 13 colleges were held in 11 subject areas ranging from biology, health care, and clinical pedagogy to language and literature, marketing and entrepreneurship, and graphic design. Poster presentations covered an additional 24 topics. Hart chaired the health care session and presented his research on “Correlation Between Manual Pulse Rate and Heart Rate Variability.”

10th Annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium to be Held at Sherman October 19-20 Renowned researchers and philosophers join forces this October for the 10th annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS) at Sherman College. The symposium is designed to bring together individuals with different viewpoints and approaches and to promote critical thinking in regard to the professional, philosophical, theoretical and practical considerations of vertebral subluxation correction.

Presentations are centered on topics such as lexicon, philosophy, politics, education, clinical research, and methods of analyzing and adjusting vertebral subluxation.

“The presenters and the crowd gathered in attendance at this event are always loaded with high-caliber thinkers and doers in chiropractic,” says chiropractic philosopher and author Rob Sinnott, D.C., DPhCS. The keynote speaker for IRAPS 2013 is Craig M. Becker, Ph.D., an associate professor of health education and promotion at the College of Health and Human Performance at East Carolina University. Marram, Lawhon, Stetzel Join Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees at Sherman College of Chiropractic is a visionary group of professionals dedicated to carrying out the college’s mission, goals and objectives to educate chiropractors, conduct relevant research and serve humanity with high quality health care. Members are elected to serve a four-year term.

Anthony “Tony” M. Lawhon, J.D.

As a lawyer for more than 20 years, Anthony Lawhon’s current practice primarily focuses on commercial trial work, which includes an unusual niche involving the protection and prosecution of copyright infringement claims. Copyright protection covers books, movies, works of art, songs and many other forms of creative works.

Lawhon specializes in representing architects and designers all around the country who have had their copyrighted architectural designs copied without their permission. He has handled hundreds of these

types of claims, and represented clients in many different states, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Colorado, California, and Utah. He looks forward to learning more about chiropractic and promises to bring due diligence along with logical and critical thinking to board member discussions. Lawhon is married to Megan, and they have three children. His hobbies include anything competitive, such as golf, ping pong, and pick-up basketball, as well as reading and traveling.

In 1999 and 2000, Marram was appointed to the Summer National Defense Science Board. He currently serves on the College Advisory Council, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and the Chemistry Advisory Group at Tufts University. “Growth is what I teach,” Marram has told the Boston Business Journal. “Growth is what I believe.”

Chiropractic has been an important part of Marram’s life – he is a supporter of the profession and a chiropractic patient.

Edward Marram, Ph.D. A Dorchester, MA, native and son of a clothing store owner, Marram founded GeoCenters in 1976 with no financial backers and expanded it to a nearly 1,200-employee business over the course of 26 years. Geo-Centers, Inc., was recognized twice by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest-growing, privately-held companies in the United States. Marram earned a Ph.D. from Tufts University and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He was named a Price-Babson College Fellow and received the Edwin M. Appel Prize for Bringing Entrepreneurial Vitality to Academia. He lectures on entrepreneurship and issues facing high-growth businesses in both graduate-level and executive education programs.

Kim R. Stetzel, D.C. Kim Stetzel is a second generation chiropractor. Her father, Dr. Edward Rahuba, graduated from the Chiropractic Institute of New York in 1959. She has another business, Weekly Handouts, which produces educational and inspirational handouts for chiropractors to give their practice members. She is also dedicated to the League of Chiropractic Women (LCW) as a founding member. “I share Sherman’s core values and philosophy and have striven throughout my career to put those values into action through service to my practice, my community and the profession,” Stetzel says of her reasons for joining the board.

“Sherman College has traditionally held the line and been unwavering in its commitment to pure chiropractic and its principles. In this time in chiropractic’s history, it has never been more important for Sherman to stand as a strong and stable beacon.” She and her husband, Greg, a Sherman graduate, have two children, Billy and Danielle, both of whom plan to continue the family chiropractic tradition. She likes going to “the shore,” as it’s known in Jersey, as well as photography, desktop publishing and working out.

Browns Honored with Thom & Betty Gelardi Service Award Helen and Gordon Brown, D.C., formerly of Sedona, AZ, have been honored with the Thom and Betty Gelardi Service Award by Sherman College of Chiropractic. The award was presented during Lyceum 2013 on the college’s campus in Spartanburg, SC. The award is a high honor presented at the discretion of the president and was last given nearly a decade ago. This award honors the Gelardis (who founded the college) and the recipients who are deemed to have the same qualities as the couple; it is given to recognize unselfish dedication, visionary leadership and pioneering spirit.

Dr. Gordon Brown is a 1942 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic who practiced in Louisville, KY, for two years and in Logansport, IN, for 19 years. He was awarded an International Chiropractors Association (ICA) Fellowship and was instrumental in getting the laws changed in Indiana to allow chiropractors to practice.

Helen McPike Brown, originally from Davenport, IA, is a talented artist who comes from a chiropractic family. Her father, Dr. Ray McPike, an enthusiastic, early supporter of Sherman, was a chiropractor. Helen is past president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the International Chiropractors Association (WAICA).

The Browns are the founders of the Future Chiropractors of America and a nationwide back-to-school spinal check program. They have supported and contributed generously to Sherman College in many ways over the years.

In 1993, they became members of the Board of Regents and continue to contribute yearly. In 1997, they made a generous estate commitment to the Sherman College Endowment Trust.

The Browns donated their home in Sedona to Sherman College in 1999, and funds from the donation were used to construct the Brown House and Museum on campus. The structure serves as an on-campus residence for the Browns, and the lower level houses a museum with the college’s historical chiropractic holdings. The Browns’ donation is the largest gift in kind in the history of the college. They remain passionate and avid supporters.

Strength in Numbers: Your Participation Makes a Better Alumni Association This past year has seen several generous accomplishments by our Alumni Association:  The awarding of six scholarships  Contribution of financial support to Sherman’s World Congress of Chiropractic Students  $4,000 contributed toward the cost of re-carpeting the Health Center  $1,000 collected from members to complete the Health Center Equipment Fund matching challenge, and, most recently  The purchase of a tile on the Honor Wall memorializing former faculty member Dr. Michael Westbrook.

We have done much, but there is more to do.

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, “there is strength is numbers.” With more than 3,000 Sherman graduates practicing worldwide, why do we only have 270 paying Alumni Association members? I want to see us doing more with more. That is why I am proposing a membership campaign for 2014 that could double our strength and presence at Sherman College of Chiropractic.

Look at your state university’s main campus. How active is their alumni association in collegiate activities and support?

Sherman, Pennsylvania College Alumni Named to College Leadership Positions Brian McAulay, D.C., Ph.D., a 1985 graduate of Pennsylvania College of Chiropractic, became president of Parker University in Dallas, TX, on March 1.

Phil McMaster, D.C., became president of the New Zealand College of Chiropractic on July 1 after serving in that role on an interim part-time basis.

He serves as CEO over university operations, including Parker Seminars.

McAulay earned a doctorate in business and management from Temple University in 1999 and served in several key administrative education roles prior to this appointment, including executive vice president and provost at Life University in Atlanta, GA, vice president for academic affairs for Palmer Chiropractic University System in Davenport, IA, and interim president and executive vice president & provost at Sherman College.

uture chiropractor and Sherman College of Chiropractic student Jennifer Jones has been crowned Ms. United States. Jones, who represented the state of North Carolina in the national pageant, won the title July 7 in Washington, D.C. Jones, 28, is a third-year student at Sherman and expects to graduate in September 2014. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Limestone College in South Carolina and is now completing her clinical internship at Sherman. She is the daughter of Troy and Karan Jones of Cleveland County, NC, and has a younger brother, J.T. Sherman College Dean of Student Affairs LaShanda Hutto Harris says the college is thrilled to have one of its students crowned.

“We know she will be a wonderful representative for her country, her college and her future profession of chiropractic,” Harris said. “We eagerly anticipate the awareness her platform, ‘Back to Health: Chiropractic Care,’ will bring for the chiropractic profession.”

Jones’ platform gives her the opportunity to share the chiropractic message across the country. A high school and college athlete, Jones says she has always been interested in health care and performance. Working as an athletic trainer in high school confirmed that interest and led her to explore chiropractic. She said her schedule over the next year will include a number of nationwide appearances and modeling opportunities.

“I am so absolutely grateful and speechless for all the blessings that have been bestowed on me,” Jones says. “The ball is rolling on this fabulous opportunity.

This next year will be the best of my life.”

Jones competed against 38 other women from other states for the Ms. United States title. According to the organization’s website, the pageant is for women between the ages of 26 and 55 who are single, widowed or divorced. Contestants are judged based on a personal interview, an on stage question, and swimsuit and evening wear competitions.

Dr. Cordero and his wife, Debbie, an entomologist, had worked together for 20 years building a successful business.

A native of Puerto Rico, Dr. Cordero had developed a specialty practice serving the needs of Hispanics in his community, and he had never considered leaving private practice to move into an academic position.

All of that changed after his experience at Lyceum. When he realized that Jon Schwartzbauer, D.C., was announcing his resignation as president of Sherman College, he refused to think of that announcement during his first visit to Sherman as a coincidence. “I’ve always believed that there are no coincidences, just divine opportunities,” Dr. Cordero says of the leap of faith he took when he decided to apply for the position.

He and his wife, who he says are “people of faith,” gave prayerful consideration to the changes that they would have to make if he was selected as Sherman College’s fifth president. Their two children – Michelle, 27, and John, 26 – had their own successful careers in Florida and were supportive of their father’s move should he be selected. Considering the fact that he had no previous academic experience, Dr. Cordero

was surprised and delighted when he was chosen as one of three finalists in the search, out of the 20 applicants who sought the position.

The route to the college presidency for Dr. Cordero was a circuitous one. As a native of Puerto Rico, he was by birth a citizen of the United States. At the age of 19, he enrolled in college, but after only a year joined the United States Navy.

Then in 1988, he began pre-chiropractic study at Palm Beach Community College before moving to Marietta, GA, to complete his studies at Brenau College. After finishing his undergraduate degree, he enrolled at Life Chiropractic College where he received his D.C. in 1993.

Dr. Cordero worked in both Puerto Rico and South Florida as an associate before opening Cordero Family Chiropractic, Inc., in Boynton Beach, FL, in 1995.

During that time he also led teams of chiropractors on humanitarian mission trips and served as the team chiropractor for the Costa Rican Olympic Team.

Developing his skills as a motivational speaker, he traveled in the United States and South America spreading the word about the benefits of chiropractic.

SHERMAN FUTURE “The Hispanic culture is family oriented,” Dr. Cordero explained, pointing to the fact that so many of Sherman’s faculty and staff have been at the school for an extended period of time as one of the things that attracted him. “When I visited, I saw Sherman as a big family where everyone supported each other. The fact that everyone embraced me has made this a tremendous experience.”

Now Dr. Cordero is excited about executing his vision and leading the 40-year-old institution forward. His goal is to make Sherman not only the preeminent chiropractic college nationally but to enhance its reputation internationally. Sherman’s student body is already diverse, with students from all over the United States and many other countries, but, Dr. Cordero says, “I want to bring Sherman to places we’ve never been.” In support of that goal, he has visited Puerto Rico five times since taking office and has recruited close to 25 students to visit the college.

“Because I am Hispanic, when I go into Spanish speaking countries, I have more credibility. My job is to go on the road, bringing with me the name of Sherman College.”

He even has dreams of setting up satellite schools in other countries to serve students who cannot come to the United States to study. “The central campus could feed satellite campuses in countries like Costa Rica,” Dr. Cordero says of a plan to spread chiropractic to underserved areas of the world.

But he also knows that there is work to be done locally. Raising the school’s profile in South Carolina and in the local communi-

ty is important as well. He believes that taking a more active role in Spartanburg’s College Town initiative is one way to do that. With that goal in mind, Sherman’s new president initiated a partnership with Spartanburg Methodist College, a two-year college, to have Sherman interns provide chiropractic care to the school’s athletes (see page 7).

“Giving back to the local community is very important, and we want to explore ways to do that,” Dr. Cordero says.

“We have to prepare students for real life experiences, teach them to be effective in the community where they go to serve. We want to encourage them

to become involved in their community, to give back both professionally and financially.”

He hopes to seize on another opportunity that already exists on campus to help him accomplish this objective. “Sherman’s Health Center presents an opportunity for chiropractic care at a reasonable price for people in the area,” Dr. Cordero says of the teaching clinic for chiropractic students who are in their final stage of internship prior to graduation. Expanding the visibility of the facility, with its 23 patient care rooms equipped with modern chiropractic analytical and adjusting equipment, would benefit both the community and chiropractic students.

Though Dr. Cordero did not attend Sherman as a student, he believes that

throughout his career he has embraced the philosophy that has been at the heart of Sherman’s mission since its beginning. “The philosophy at Sherman has been consistent and is the basis on which the profession was founded,” Dr. Cordero says of the emphasis on treating the body as a self-healing, self-maintaining organism. “I realized that while some chiropractic colleges have strayed from the concept of straight chiropractic, Sherman still promotes the chiropractic philosophy that I embraced when I joined the profession.”

Dr. Cordero has served as Sherman’s president since January, but it is only fitting that his investiture took place in May at this year’s Lyceum, signifying the end to a process that began at last year’s event. He was proud that members of his family traveled from Puerto Rico, where Dr. Cordero

hopes to spread the story of chiropractic and where most of his family still lives, to witness the investiture. With his family and his new Sherman family present, he challenged others to embrace his goals and aspirations for Sherman and for the profession of chiropractic.

He knows that accomplishing all of his personal and professional goals will take hard work. But with his wife, Debbie, at his side, traveling and working together as a team as they always have, he has confidence that the goals are achievable.

“For me it’s about leaving a legacy,” Dr. Cordero says. “It’s bigger than myself.

It’s just so exciting that this opportunity came for me to affect chiropractic in a positive way. Our most important job is to share the message.”

Keisha Hall Smith wanted to be a doctor all her life, though she didn’t learn about chiropractic until a recruiter visited her class at Valdosta State University. “I was working on a degree in biology and my aim was to become a pediatrician,” she says of the moment she became aware of other options.

The Peasley brothers have a plan – a family plan. After graduation, the Michigan natives, will move back home and open Peasley Brothers Chiropractic. The seed for that plan was planted 10 years ago when they met Gary and Cathie Padden, D.C.s.

“That day I learned that you could positively affect someone’s life without being invasive, a light bulb went off. It was so natural to think I could affect people’s lives by just using my hands.” Soon, her cousin, Sherman grad Penny Jackson, D.C., gave Keisha her first adjustment. After a few weeks of care that Keisha said “changed my life,” Jackson talked to her about Sherman.

“She told me Sherman was focused, had small class sizes and was like a family. The family experience is very important to me,” Keisha says. Jackson encouraged her to visit campus, and Keisha soon decided to apply.

At Sherman, Keisha is now a tour guide so she can provide others with the support she received when she was making her decision.

“That’s my opportunity to leave my mark.

That’s the greatest experience – sharing my love of chiropractic.”

“I knew the Paddens as great people before I knew them as chiropractors,” says Justin, who became a patient and job shadowed when he suffered an ankle injury. “I found out how much the Paddens were able to help people without giving their patients drugs or surgery. Chiropractic seemed like less of a job and more of a passion.”

Andrew, the youngest of five siblings, had a similar path. “In high school I knew I wanted to pursue a career in a health field,” he explains. “After job shadowing Drs. Gary and Cathie, I knew I wanted to help people through chiropractic.”

The brothers have been pushing each other to be better since they were kids and plan to continue doing so. “The goal isn’t to be good, but great. The better we are at chiropractic, the more people we can help.

We are being chiropractors together to build off each other’s strengths.”

“I’m ready for the next 30 years of my life.”

Virginia Voyles was first introduced to chiropractic at a business exposition. At the time, the Eastern Illinois University graduate was working in advertising sales.

A chance meeting led her to go into a chiropractic office to be checked.

When David Tan was 19 years old entering the Singapore military, a career in chiropractic had never crossed his mind. Now, 23 years later, he’s looking forward to launching his second career back in his home country.

“I learned that chiropractic was so much more than I had thought,” Virginia says.

The initial visit led her to become a patient and, later, work as a chiropractic assistant.

She quickly learned, she says, that “everything was really all about the patients.”

Her passion for chiropractic had been awakened, and she began researching colleges. “I knew my institution had to be based on true chiropractic philosophy, focused on allowing innate intelligence to function at its fullest potential,” Virginia says of her decision to study at Sherman.

One thing she’s learned is that even though classes can be tough, it’s the passion for chiropractic that makes success possible. “Service is my passion. Working with amazing practice members, serving and loving them every day is where my heart resides. My plan is to live my passion.”

“The only job I had was in the military,” the 42-year-old says of a job where his primary goal was “to be a leader of men, to positively touch lives and to play an active role in the defense of my country.” As he approached mandatory retirement age of 50, the husband and father began to look for a new phase of life to transit out of the military.

Kevin Ng, D.C., a Sherman graduate and former accountant, would provide the inspiration David needed. “He introduced the philosophy of chiropractic and that resounded well with me. His success in practice also gave me the assurance that the transition, while difficult, would be a positive one.”

Because of his career shift, David is more focused on his goals: starting his practice in Singapore, and, ultimately, training and managing other chiropractors. “Students like me have a different perspective on life.

I know exactly what I’m doing and how I want to use the next 30 years of my life.”

The happiest, most interesting lives are those lived with purpose.

One of today’s most sought-after fields, chiropractic is the profession of choice for many who seek a rewarding career – helping patients achieve good health and function at their best.

Sherman College Lyceum Award Recipients

Chiropractor of the Year: Shane Walker, D.C. Naples, FL, chiropractor Shane Walker, D.C., was named Chiropractor of the Year. The Chiropractor of the Year Award is an honor bestowed upon doctors who have, through their service, given extraordinary time and effort to advance Sherman College and the chiropractic profession. Walker is a 2000 graduate of Sherman College and operates a high volume, family practice.

“Dr. Walker is a man of vision, contributing much time and energy to advance principled chiropractic, and we are fortunate to call him one of our own,” said Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C., when he presented the award at the college’s 40th anniversary Lyceum.

Walker serves as a member of the Sherman College Board of Trustees, bringing energy and commitment to the college’s growth and vitality. He is a member of the elite Reach Out and Recruit program for Sherman College and recently served as keynote speaker for a training session inspiring other doctors to refer students to Sherman.

Walker not only devotes his time and energy to Sherman College, but he also serves as president of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations and travels the globe garnering support and building its membership.

Service to the Profession: Dennis Yeung, D.C. Dennis Yeung, D.C., ’96, is making a big impact halfway around the world.

Yeung founded ADIO Family Chiropractic Centre in Hong Kong where he has shared the chiropractic message with government officials, celebrities, parents and children through numerous programs and campaigns. Yeung is founder of the Children Chiropractic Foundation and has served on mission trips to China. He now has four ADIO Centres, where he provides free chiropractic care to underprivileged children.

Service to Sherman College: Scott Garber, D.C. Scott Garber, D.C., has demonstrated extraordinary, unselfish and noteworthy service to Sherman College. As a regent, Garber has demonstrated leadership by designating proceeds from a Berkshires chiropractic seminar to benefit Sherman.

Along with a full day of presentations, Garber arranged for a career session for prospective Sherman students. Thanks to his efforts, the college received funds, as well as secured new supporters and potential students. Garber has inspired others to coordinate fund-raisers for the college.

Distinguished Service: David Serio, D.C. Buenos Aires chiropractor (and New Jersey native) David Serio, D.C., practices in Argentina, a chiropractically underserved country. He has appeared in eight major magazines including People and Newsweek and has built a high-volume

family practice caring for popular Argentine actors, sports stars, politicians, and models as well as many families and children. He is a principal speaker for IFCO events and has organized a Latin American chiropractic seminar.

Spirit of Sherman College: Daniel Knowles, D.C. Daniel Knowles, D.C., ’96, of Boulder, CO, is a member of the Board of Trustees.

Knowles initiated the Sherman Connect call program, a free leadership resource for D.C.s and students. He remains its leader to this day, securing guest speakers and hosting calls.

Knowles is active in the profession, serving as an instructor for Network Spinal Analysis and Wise World Seminars. He is founder of Lifetime Wellness Practice and has served as a mentor and coach.

Spirit of Sherman College: Samuel Ralls, D.C. Samuel Ralls, D.C., ’09, owns Ralls Family Chiropractic in Inman, SC. Ralls has made difficult changes in his life and his practice to hold true to his philosophy and passion as a doctor of chiropractic. He has implemented a strong patient and community education program and is making a positive impact on the public perception of chiropractic.

Ralls remains involved with Sherman College students through a philosophy club, and he is an active Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) member.

Layperson of the Year: Roberta Thomas

ROAR Career Advisor of the Year: Jeffrey Franco, D.C.

Roberta Thomas holds two positions with the college as executive administrative assistant to the president and assistant to the director of continuing education. She has been an instrumental part of a smooth transition in leadership for both offices. She has served in a variety of volunteer positions including United Way team captain and representative, Boiling Springs Museum Committee Chair, representative for the Boiling Springs Area Council at the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of college committees.

Jeffrey Franco, D.C., ’10, of Mandeville, LA, has gone above and beyond to recruit students to Sherman College. The Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) program asks its doctors to reach beyond their comfort zones and help Sherman recruit future leaders for the profession. While enrolled at Sherman, Franco was heavily involved in recruiting new students as a volunteer tour guide. During the past year, three of his referral students enrolled, and he is well on his way to earning a scholarship in his name to award to his future students at Sherman.

Rising Star: Ryan Williams, D.C. Ryan Williams, D.C., ’09, opened his first office in 2010 in his hometown of Clinton, SC, and his second office in 2011 in Simpsonville, SC. He is on the board of the Clinton Business Association and is a member of the Clinton and Simpsonville Chambers of Commerce. Williams graduated from the Upper Cervical Academy in 2011 and holds several advanced chiropractic certifications. He is also a member of ROAR, supporting the college through student referrals and mentoring.

ROAR Career Advisor of the Year: Kelvin Ng, D.C. Kelvin Ng, D.C., ’09, of Singapore has also gone above and beyond to recruit students to Sherman College through the ROAR program. Ng established Family Health Chiropractic Clinic in Singapore in 2010.

Last year one referred student enrolled at the college and in July 2013, two more began their education at Sherman. A career changer himself, Dr. Ng inspires his patients to consider making the same bold career decision he made and is truly sharing the message of chiropractic with his corner of the world. He serves on the board of the Chiropractic Association of Singapore.

Save the Date: Lyceum 2014 Moves to Early May

Regent of the Year: Liam Schübel, D.C. Sherman Board member and New Jersey native Liam Schübel, D.C., was named Regent of the Year. This award is presented in recognition of his outstanding and continuous advancement of Sherman College through participation on the college’s Board of Regents, a group dedicated to supporting quality chiropractic education through financial donations and leadership.

Regents give visibility and stature to Sherman College through speaking engagements, legislative roles, student referrals, and financial support. Schübel has actively recruited new members to the Board of Regents for several years and is passionate in his support of Sherman College and its mission.

He is co-founder of The Best Mission Trip Ever, which takes chiropractic care to geographically and economically isolated communities of the world. In addition to the multiple chiropractic clinics he has established in Lima, Peru, and elsewhere, Schübel is executive director of Schubel Vision Communication Seminars and founder of the Peruvian Chiropractic Alliance.

He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations, is vice chairman of the Sherman College Board of Trustees and is co-author of a book, Cast to be Chiropractors.

Lyceum 2014 is scheduled for May 1-3, 2014, and in the future, Lyceum will be scheduled around the first weekend in May. We anticipate that this change in date will eliminate a number of scheduling conflicts for our guests and open the event to a wider audience of chiropractors and friends who previously have not been able to attend.

As a small, private institution, we sometimes focus on daily operations and month-to-month budgets. However, last year we spent a great deal of time and effort on growing several of our endowed funds, meaning the funds that secure our future because we keep the principal donations invested and use only the earnings to provide the scholarship or other expense the fund was created to support. 2012 Honor Roll of Donors

Ensuring the Future of Chiropractic Education: Drs. Amanda & Jeremy Hess Drs. Amanda and Jeremy Hess own and operate a high-volume practice in Stockbridge, GA. They became members of the President’s Circle of Sherman and support the college with their financial gifts “to ensure a place where future generations can receive a sound, solid chiropractic education.”

Dr. Jeremy’s passion for natural healing methods began after receiving specific chiropractic care for a collegiate soccer injury to his hip. To his surprise, not only was his hip injury corrected, but also his asthma and a chronic, two-year eye infection healed. Thus began his journey into the world of natural health, healing and giving others hope through specific, scientific chiropractic care.

Dr. Jeremy says his mission is to serve God by serving the families of his community and region through principled chiropractic care allowing the innate healing potential of the body to fully express itself. A graduate of Life University, he is a member of the Georgia Council of Chiropractic, board member since 2007. He is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations and a Lifetime Member of the International Chiropractors Association.

He also enjoys mentoring and teaching chiropractors and students practice procedures and inspiring them to make a huge impact in their communities. He and his wife, Amanda, have two children.

Dr. Amanda had a positive experience with chiropractic as a teenager suffering from a cheerleading injury. After going the traditional medical route with little relief, her mother then scheduled her first appointment with a chiropractor. After just a few specific adjustments she was out of pain and back to cheerleading and dancing. Dr. Amanda completed her undergraduate degree at the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. After interning in college as part of a molecular genetic research team for bone marrow transplants at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Columbia, SC, she knew that her mission in life was not to be a part of the sick care industry but rather to be a part of a profession that provides increased function to the body.

She is a dedicated mother, wife, chiropractor, mentor, and health coach and an example of how to have balance in the home and workplace while serving humanity. She, too, is a member of the Georgia Council of Chiropractic, a Lifetime Member of the International Chiropractors Association, a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and a member of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations.

Currently the couple is writing a book series called Designed by God. The books empower people and families to live from the inside out, teaching that our bodies were magnificently made by God with the natural ability to function normally, heal and be healthy. Save the Date: Lyceum 2014 Moves to Early May Beginning in 2014, Lyceum will be held a few weeks before Memorial Day Weekend. The event is scheduled for May 1-3, 2014, and in the future, Lyceum will be scheduled around the first weekend in May. We wanted to share this news with you as early as possible.

We anticipate that this change in date will eliminate a number of scheduling conflicts for our guests and open the event to a wider audience of chiropractors and friends who previously have not been able to attend.
