For nearly 50 years, Sherman College has been a fortress and protector of principled chiropractic, ensuring its future and continued presence in the profession. As we approach Sherman College’s 50th anniversary next year, we will be opening a new chapter in our institution’s rich history and closing a meaningful chapter for me.

As you may know, my contract as president ends this year. While it was a very difficult decision to move on, I know it is the right time for both myself and for the next stage of growth for Sherman College.

During my tenure as president, I have given my all to promote, protect and preserve chiropractic, and I am proud to have seen Sherman College through a period of enrollment growth, campus expansion and professional connection. In turn, I will be eternally grateful for the blessings Sherman College has bestowed upon me: a wonderful, love-filled community with amazing faculty, staff and students, the opportunity to lead an institution that provides a preeminent chiropractic education, and the satisfaction of knowing that Sherman College has worked tirelessly to change the world for the better.

As leaders in principled chiropractic, we have the opportunity to advance our profession and to change the world. We can take what was passed down to us, nurture it and use it to make a true positive impact, leaving the world better than we found it. I pray that has been my legacy here at Sherman College. I have kept those sentiments in my heart and they have guided every action I have taken throughout my 10 years as president.

I am abundantly grateful to those who paved the way before us. I am honored to have done my part over the past decade, and I am thankful for those who have served with me. Now, I look forward with great anticipation to this next chapter for Sherman College.

Just imagine what we will accomplish over the next 50 years!

Transforming Clinical Education Sherman College’s Chiropractic Health Center is transforming clinical education and changing lives.

With its focus on clinic and program enhancements aimed at providing an outstanding patient experience, the Health Center offers students a relevant professional internship that prepares them for success in their chiropractic practice after graduation.

Patients come to the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center to experience high quality, affordable chiropractic care for the entire family, at every stage of life, from pediatric to geriatric. The Chiropractic Health Center is a teaching clinic for chiropractic interns who are in their final stage of study prior to graduation from the doctor of chiropractic program.

The teaching environment at the clinic, coordinated by licensed doctors, allows interns to practice chiropractic with ongoing mentoring for the student and effective, compassionate care for the patient. Here’s the latest news on the clinic experience and how Sherman College is preparing the next generation of doctors of chiropractic for practice.

EHR Implementation Nearly Complete The Health Center is about six months away from completing its shift to electronic health records (EHR) with ChiroTouch. EHR allows for better reporting and easier assessment when auditing files. In addition to enhancing patient care, an electronic system also provides great insight when implementing best practices on running a clinic, offering reliable statistics for tracking, analysis and forecasting.

Health Center faculty and administration are able to select a cohort of students and compare their performance (patient visit average, dollar visit average) against the Health Center budget to see if they are meeting their financial and business goals by bringing in patients and revenue. Faculty can also analyze indicators of patient retention and new patient processes.

Rather than simply focusing on graduation requirements, interns are able to review these clinic metrics and reports during their first practice in the clinic to gain valuable insights into why such metrics are critical. What better practice for students, who will need to consider these topics, among many others, once they are on their own after graduation.

Clinic Improvements and Patient Engagement The college has made a number of recent improvements in both equipment and clinic environment. One recent project updated the clinic’s main sign along Springfield Road — clearly and boldly declaring the building’s purpose as a Chiropractic Health Center.

Another enhancement is the addition of a new pediatric-specific room in the clinic, which includes a pediatric adjusting table, a pediatric scale to weigh infants (in some cases when we are the family’s primary provider), a changing table and a comfortable chair for feeding.

Light filters have been added to all adjusting rooms to reduce lumen output, which studies have shown can be helpful with some patients, particularly children with neurodevelopmental disorders. This change has created a better experience and a more calming environment for patients, parents and caregivers.

Additionally, the Student Clinic now has ten new adjusting tables, including one computer per table, for added efficiency when students are seeing their reciprocal patients.

Preparation for Success in Practice Spinal screenings and health fairs offer excellent learning opportunities and are crucial to interns’ understanding of community relations and business marketing.

Thanks to an increase in local events, interns have had several opportunities to represent the Health Center, share the message of

New Workshops Make a Smoother Transition to Clinic Internships Several recent clinic changes involve the academic program and administration with its faculty-driven curriculum. Assistant faculty members in the clinic are leading workshops for interns in areas of technique, practice model (how to establish an office, work as an associate, etc.), the mindset shift of entering clinic, and more. These workshops are designed to create a smoother onboarding process for students who are transitioning to their internships in the clinic.

Monthly theme days and holiday celebrations at the Health Center, such as hat day or Valentine’s Day, are popular, infusing fun into students’ day-to-day routines and modeling office events that they can reproduce later in practice.

In an effort to streamline administrative tasks for new graduates and free their time for relationship-building, the Health Center now offers its patient paperwork as a starting point for its budding chiropractic entrepreneurs.

Graduating students are provided with a package of paperwork (without any collegeidentifying information or logos) that can easily be adapted and personalized for their use in practice.

Clinic faculty members now have the ability to devote one day each week to focus on specific projects such as research, reporting, case management, faculty promotion work and more. Clinic faculty and staff meet biweekly to ensure better communication, and enjoy quarterly team-building events like pumpkin carving and themed potlucks after entrance and exit exams.

College Publications, Communications Honored Five of Sherman College’s key marketing and communications projects have been recognized at the national level, with one receiving second place honors and four others taking home honorable mention prizes in the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) Communications Contest. Before advancing to the national contest, an annual competition that encourages and rewards excellence in communication, the entries won first-place honors in Media Women of South Carolina’s (MWSC) statewide contest. This year’s NFPW contest included more than 2,000 entries from across the U.S. The college’s chiropractic career piece took second place in the nation in its category (brochure – nonprofit, government or educational). Earning honorable mentions were four college projects: Sherman Shares (writing – nonprofit, government or educational newsletter), an admissions webpage for high school students (web and

social media – web copy), a series of sportsfocused ads (advertising – ad campaign), and a speech for Lyceum 2021 (speech).

Senior Director of Marketing and Communications Karen Brower Rhodes, M.B.A., led the development and production of these projects in 2021 as part of Sherman College’s outreach for several departments, including Marketing and Communications, Admissions and Institutional Advancement.

This is not the first time Marketing and Communications’ has received honors from MWSC and NFPW. In 2021, the college had six entries in the national competition, all earning national honors, including a first-place prize for the Sherman College Brand Guide.

Additional projects have been recognized nationally throughout the years, with a print piece for prospective students also earning top honors in 2014.

Admissions on the Road ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS JACOB HARRIS SHARED THE BENEFITS OF A CAREER IN CHIROPRACTIC WITH PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS AT A RECENT RECRUITING EVENT. The Sherman College Admissions team had a busy 2021-2022 academic year, hosting and attending recruitment events at colleges and universities across the U.S., including South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Utah, Texas, Arkansas, Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee.

The college also took part in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions annual conference in Denver this June, meeting with hundreds of health professions advisors to promote chiropractic to career advisors as the career of choice and to share information about the profession, the college and its entrance requirements.

Continuing its efforts to make the transition to chiropractic college even easier for future students, the Office of Admissions developed a Three Plus One agreement with Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio and an articulation agreement with Southwest Virginia Community College. Three Plus One agreements help students save a full year while earning their bachelor’s degree; articulation agreements help students earn their 90 semester hours of prerequisite courses for admission to Sherman.

ROAR Members Leading and Growing the Profession OUR IMPACT ON THE CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSION AND THE WORLD DEPENDS ON LEADERS LIKE OUR REACH OUT AND RECRUIT (ROAR) MEMBERS—AN ENTHUSASTIC COMMUNITY THAT CONTINUES TO GROW. More than 60 members attended the ROAR Luncheon during Lyceum in April; it was the largest membership gathering at Lyceum since the ROAR program’s inception.

The ROAR luncheon offered a wonderful opportunity to reconnect and celebrate chiropractic with colleagues who are inspiring the next generation.

We heard from recent Sherman College graduates to veteran doctors, Lyceum speakers and faculty members.

We welcomed 11 new doctors to the ROAR program and shared more than 100 prospective student folders with members to have available at their offices, along with some fun ROAR swag, including golf towels and tumblers. We owe a special thanks to our Director of International Recruitment Rolando Rivera, who played a major role in the success of this event.

A ROARing Q&A with Alejandro and Emily Elías When Alejandro and Emily Elías, D.C.s, graduated in June 2021 from Sherman College, they had one goal in mind: to bring hope and healing to the world. They visited Abilene, TX, for the first time in January 2021 and immediately fell in love. “It’s a quaint yet large town, and we love the sense of community and the resilience of the people,” the couple said.

The pair opened Victory Spinal Care in Abilene in December 2021, aiming to shift the perspective of health to raise up healthy families in the community. They also held fast to their appreciation of Sherman College and soon after graduation joined the Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) Program.

We asked this young chiropractic power couple to share why the ROAR program is important to them and how it helps them support the future of chiropractic education. Here’s what they had to say:

Q: What do you enjoy most about having students shadow in the office?

We love when students shadow our office! It is a great reminder of where we came from, often shadowing doctors every opportunity we could. Students challenge us with thought-provoking questions, helping us to recenter and refocus on WHY we do what we do. Of course, we hope to inspire students to figure out their best path in life, their purpose, and to see if chiropractic is a viable option for them as a profession. Then we tell them how amazing Sherman College is in hopes that they will also attend.

Q: Why do you choose to support Sherman through student referrals?

Sherman College has given us so much. We met on orientation day and from then on, we were inseparable.

So, we are super grateful that Sherman College brought us to each other. Beyond that, we have received a top-notch education from a chiropractic school that remains grounded

in philosophy. Since being out of school and being exposed to other chiropractic colleges and regions in the U.S. that don’t truly know what chiropractic is (let alone principled chiropractic), we see the challenges and negative effects of going to a school where you are not taught the principle of straight chiropractic.

If we can inspire people to attend Sherman College and get exposed to what chiropractic is all about, we know we can help to change that many more lives!

Q: How do you inspire others to become interested in chiropractic?

To inspire others about chiropractic, the most powerful thing we can tell them are our stories! We love to share how chiropractic changed our lives and then, in turn, what we have done to help our patients. We love to talk about how a clear nervous system can be a game changer! We recently met a young couple, and the husband wanted to become a chiropractor. We offered him the opportunity to shadow and told him he’s more than welcome to stop into the office. Not only did he become a long-term patient, but he also asked Emily to adjust his baby right after birth! And after that, he made the decision to attend a Showcase Sherman Weekend. We believe if we can plant these seeds early, more people’s lives will be changed—and that is our ultimate goal!

Employee Updates Brewster Named Assistant Director of the Center for Scholarly Activity Alan Brewster, D.C., ’89, A.C.P., has been appointed assistant director of the Center for Scholarly Activity. Brewster joined Sherman College in 2017 and was recently honored as Faculty Member of the Year. Along with teaching in clinical sciences, he will also be working closely with the center’s director, Christopher Kent, D.C., A.C.P., J.D., in advancing the mission of the college in the area of scholarship, research and evidenceinformed practices.

Keely English Named Teaching and Learning Specialist With her recent promotion to teaching and learning specialist, Keely English has joined the team in the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning. English came to Sherman College in 2018 as a temporary employee in Student Affairs and was then hired to the full-time position of student activities assistant. She was promoted to student activities coordinator in 2019. During her tenure in Student Affairs, English gained invaluable experience with the campus learning management system, and her knowledge of ADA compliance in higher education has served as a springboard to assist faculty in preparing accessible course content and creating innovative projects in the campus studio.

Foster Named Director of Continuing Education Rozelle Foster has been promoted to director of Continuing Education.

Foster joined the college in June 2021 as CE seminar application specialist and has been working with current and new CE clients to ensure continuing education credit at in-person sponsored events. Her strengths in customer service, attention to detail, management, along with state boards experience in her previous role, made her a perfect fit to lead all aspects of the CE department, including the college’s annual flagship event, Lyceum.

Radick Named Director of Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness Angel Radick has been promoted to director of Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness. Radick joined the college in 2018 as coordinator for academic affairs and has readily accepted increasing levels of responsibility. She is currently pursuing an M.B.A. in business analytics at the University of North Carolina Pembroke and will graduate later this year. In her new role, Radick will assume responsibility for course evaluation administration, NBCE reporting, constituent surveys, and increased levels of accreditation reporting and support.

Treharne Named Chair of Business Department Heath Treharne, M.S., D.C., has been appointed as chair of the Business Department and also serves as assistant professor of clinical sciences.

Since joining the college in September 2018, he has worked diligently to serve students and faculty members in the business department and through the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning.

Meet Our 2021 Employees of the Year

Sherman College recently honored two outstanding employees in appreciation of their contributions, time and commitment to the college and its students.

FACULTY MEMBER OF THE YEAR Alan Brewster, D.C., ’89, A.C.P. Alan Brewster, D.C., ’89, A.C.P., is known throughout campus for his positive outlook and dedication to students. Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Donofrio, D.C., ’94, A.C.P., said the honor is well deserved.

“Dr. Brewster serves the campus community on so many levels, but he is most well-known for going the extra yard for students,” Donofrio said. “He is a course instructor, researcher, tutor and cheerleader. In his four years at Sherman College, he has easily put in eight years of work.”

Brewster is a 1989 summa cum laude Sherman College graduate who was valedictorian of his class and earned philosophy, clinical and academic awards at his graduation. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences-physiology from Cook College at Rutgers University (1986). Before joining the college faculty in 2017, Brewster practiced chiropractic for more than 25 years in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

He served on the Sherman College’s Board of Trustees from 20092012 and is a long-serving member of the Regent Program, a group of leaders and advocates who give visibility and stature to the college as well as provide financial support. At Sherman College, Brewster teaches courses in Full Spine, Palpation, Clinical Applications of Evidence-Informed Practice, and Neuro-Functional Assessment.

He is also active in conducting chiropractic research. The college honored him with the Spirit of Sherman College Award in 2019 and the Service to Sherman College Award in 2011.

Carlson joined the college in 2018 and has made an impressive impact in a short period of time. In her role at the college, she provides functional and technical support for programs directly related to classroom instruction, including the college’s iPad program, iBook development and operational support, the Schoology learning management system, electronic testing and more.

Carlson has extensive experience in adult education, training, teaching, course and curriculum development and creating training resources. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Lander University and has an elementary education teacher certification from Clemson University.

Dill Elected Board Chair; Campanale Chairs Presidential Search The Sherman College Board of Trustees elected new officers as part of its May 2022 meeting. Shawn H. Dill, D.C., was elected to serve as board chair; Matthew McCoy, D.C., M.P.H., will serve as vice chair; and Lisa Lanzara-Bazzani, D.C., will serve as secretary. Frank J. Hahn, D.C., was elected to a second term.

Campus Raises Money, Awareness for Project R.E.S.T.

Students, faculty and staff enjoyed a break from the dress code on April 26 for a good cause. For a minimum $5 donation, many on campus participated in Denim Day, an annual awareness event and fundraiser to benefit Project R.E.S.T., an organization dedicated to Restoring, Empowering, Supporting and Transforming the lives of survivors of domestic and sexual violence and the greater local community.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Project R.E.S.T. promotes Denim Day as part of a large-scale effort to raise awareness and to help prevent sexual violence. Sherman College participated in the campaign for its seventh year, collecting $732 in donations for the organization’s work with the community.

Statement on Vaccine Mandates Sherman College strives to create an experience and training for future chiropractors that is inspiring and congruent with the values and tenets of the college. To accomplish that goal within the legalities and requirements of governments and regulatory agencies has always been a challenge—one that has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sherman College has previously expressed its position on personal autonomy and freedom of choice in healthcare decisions on the basis of personal, philosophical and religious beliefs. Sherman College is actively engaged in exploring all legal options should vaccinations or other interventions become mandated at the federal, state or accreditation levels, which impact the institution and its stakeholders.

Sherman College has always stood out by standing up for principles. To that end, we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that people can choose their health care services and that vertebral subluxation correction is available to people of all ages and independent of their symptomatic presentation, vaccination status, lifestyle or any other factors.

Larry Celebrates with Carolina Miracle League

Sherman College mascot Larry the Lion joined fellow mascots from (pictured L to R) Carolina Miracle League, Wofford College and Limestone College, along with community members and families, to celebrate the league’s 15th anniversary. This local nonprofit gives kids facing mental or physical challenges the chance to play baseball in an organized league. Sherman has long been involved with the organization with the college sponsoring a team and students and employees serving as buddies in the league.

The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Criterium is a closed-circuit, multi-lap cycling race through downtown Spartanburg.

The Criterium turns the heart of the city into an extravagant tailgating party to watch Enjoying the annual tradition, local alumni and college cyclists race around the half-mile downtown employees attended the Crit to watch the races and network with other community groups. course. The race is a part of the USA CRITS Speed Week series and is known for its open-air plaza center, dangerously sharp left turns and unique atmosphere.

This large study reported that degenerative changes in the spine may be associated with vertebral subluxations. Best Practices for the Chiropractic Care of Children. Foundation for Vertebral Subluxation Best Practices Initiative. Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, Volume 2022, January 27, 1-59.

This long-term, continuing project supports the provision of chiropractic care for children. The recommendation states, “Since vertebral subluxation may affect individuals at any age, chiropractic care may be indicated at any time after birth. As with any age group, however, care must be taken to select adjustment methods most appropriate to the patient’s stage of development and overall spinal integrity. Parental education by the chiropractor concerning the importance of evaluating children for the presence of vertebral subluxation is encouraged as are public health initiatives geared toward screening of children for vertebral subluxation beginning at birth.”

IRAPS 2022 The International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS) is a peer-reviewed chiropractic conference that addresses vertebral subluxation research and the philosophy of chiropractic. This year, IRAPS was held in conjunction with Sherman College’s Lyceum on April 30, with more than a dozen doctors presenting their work.

The Treharnes discussed the challenges and discoveries the college made as it transformed its entire program into online learning modules, as well as how the experience changed how the faculty present concepts, assess outcomes and engage students.

The Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) concluded another successful session with 18 individuals defending their theses and earning the distinct ACP honors May 20-22, 2022. ACP alumni Jaime Pinillos, D.C., Aram Gomez, D.C., and Joaquin Farías joined Sherman College Philosophy Department Chair Bill Decken, D.C., ’86, D.Ph.C.S., as facilitators during the fifth and final module of the class in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The ACP is a one-year course designed to enhance the understanding, depth and breadth of chiropractic philosophy.

Sessions challenge the thinking process and the application of philosophy in the chiropractic profession.

The next ACP course will be offered in South Carolina, kicking off July 23-24, 2022, with additional sessions to be held October 15-16 this year and January 21-22, May 4-6, and July 22-23 in 2023. Alumni Association Sponsors Gratitude Wall Following renovations to the on-campus Chiropractic Health Center in 2021, the Office of Institutional Advancement approached the Alumni Association to collaborate on a project with the potential to be both beautiful and purposeful for an open wall located in the lobby.

In keeping with the Association’s core value to support college projects that align with the mission of the organization, the Association gladly accepted the

invitation and moved forward in helping the college by both financially sponsoring and designing an art installation.

With such a large space to work with, the Association chose to use word art centered on the gratitude alumni have for the people who helped prepare them for practice following graduation.

“When thinking about what that building means to the education of the alumni, we felt called thank the patients for trusting us with their care, the case doctors who both taught and inspired us, and the staff who supported us in the day-to-day tasks,” former Alumni Association president Jillian Farrell, D.C., ’09, said of the piece.

The Alumni Association hopes the wall will help inspire an “attitude of gratitude” among interns as they complete their clinic requirements, and that patients are reminded of the impact of their trust on the campus community and beyond. Sherman College Prepares for Presidential Leadership Transition THE SHERMAN COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND PRESIDENT EDWIN CORDERO, D.C., HAVE BEGUN A PRESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP TRANSITION. SHERMAN COLLEGE’S FIFTH PRESIDENT, CORDERO HAS SERVED IN THE ROLE SINCE JANUARY 1, 2013 AND WILL COMPLETE HIS CONTRACT ON DECEMBER 31, 2022, LEAVING A RICH LEGACY. “Sherman College holds a special place in my heart, and I am incredibly proud to have served as its president for the last decade,” Cordero said of his tenure at the institution. “I have always felt that service is a blessing, and I am truly thankful for the opportunity this role has provided to positively impact Sherman College, chiropractic education, and the profession as a whole.”

Cordero will continue to oversee the college through the end of the year, while the Board of Trustees and its search committee work to find the college’s next president. As Sherman College approaches its 50th anniversary in 2023, the board will be looking for a leader to take the institution through its next level of growth.

“The Board of Trustees is deeply grateful for all Dr. Cordero has done for Sherman College during his presidency, and will work with him for a seamless transition,” said search committee chair and past board chair Judy Nutz Campanale, D.C., A.C.P. “He has used his unique gifts and talents to achieve increased student enrollment, greater financial security, and an unprecedented campus transformation.

Cordero has positioned Sherman College as a preeminent chiropractic institution in the U.S. and the world – one that focuses on the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic.

He more than doubled enrollment within the first three years of his tenure. He also sparked growth in diversity, working to increase recruiting efforts in Puerto Rico and other areas across the nation and internationally.

Hispanic students now account for more than 20 percent of total college enrollment, and Sherman students hail from 48 states and 12 countries.

Cordero has led a period of tremendous campus growth, successfully completing a $22 million campus master plan investment that featured the construction of the Gelardi Student Center, now a campus centerpiece.

This building provides students with stateof-the-art facilities and has strategically positioned the college as it continues to grow enrollment, engage with the community, and prepare students for success.

Under Cordero’s leadership, the college quickly adapted to COVID-related challenges.

During his tenure, he has strengthened Sherman’s relationships and stature in the profession, bringing attention to the importance of principled chiropractic education and garnering generous philanthropic support.

Prior to joining Sherman College, Cordero ran a high volume, successful chiropractic practice for 19 years in Florida, where he served as a leader in the chiropractic profession. He frequently spoke at key industry events and participated in numerous humanitarian chiropractic mission trips. He is a 1993 graduate of Life University’s College of Chiropractic.

Board of Trustees Selects Search Firm The Sherman College Board of Trustees has begun the search for the institution’s sixth president.

After identifying and vetting several recruitment firms to assist in the presidential search process, the board selected Diversified Search Group (DivSearch).

DivSearch was ranked by Forbes as one of the top executive recruiting firms in the nation in 2021 and is the largest female-founded retained executive search firm in the world. The firm is dedicated to attracting and recruiting inspiring, transformational leaders who bring steady direction, bold thinking, a commitment to diversity, fresh ideas and sustained leadership to their clients and organizations.

“DivSearch’s mission, ‘Cultivating New Leadership for a Changing World,’” speaks to Sherman College’s needs looking to the future,” said board chair Shawn H. Dill, D.C. “Our next president will need to address the issues of a changing world while taking Sherman College to its next level.”

An institutional search committee will work with DivSearch to ensure that Sherman College’s specific needs are met. The search committee consists of the college’s full Board of Trustees along with selected representatives from campus constituencies of faculty, staff, student body, alumni, and philanthropic supporters.

Judy Nutz Campanale, D.C., A.C.P., will chair the search committee, with Linda Giuliano, M.B.A., serving as vice chair, and the rest of the board serving as members. Joining the board on the Search Committee are LaShanda Hutto Harris, M.S.W. (Executive Team), Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, D.C.C.J.P (Faculty Senate), Chris Roberson (Staff Council), Jillian Farrell, D.C., ’09 (alumni), Joshua Yachter (student body) and Irene Gold, D.C. (President’s Circle donor).

The committee will partner with DivSearch to identify the characteristics and attributes for the institution’s next president. The entire search process is expected to take several months.

Supporting a smooth transition, Cordero will be able to spend time with the incoming leader prior to his departure at the end of the year. Applicant and further contact information will be forthcoming from DivSearch; those interested in applying should check the college’s blog in the coming weeks.

Sherman Honors 2022 Award Recipients Sherman College honored alumni, chiropractors and supporters during its 49th annual Lyceum, a homecoming and continuing education event attended by hundreds of alumni, prospective students and friends of the college from across the U.S. and internationally. The college is proud to announce the following 2022 award recipients.

THOM AND BETTY GELARDI SERVICE AWARD Edwin Cordero, D.C., and Mrs. Debbie Cordero Like its namesake, this award recognizes the unselfish dedication, visionary leadership and pioneering spirit of recipients. The Board of Trustees has honored Edwin and Debbie Cordero for their many contributions to the college and the profession.

Edwin Cordero is a 1993 graduate of Life University College of Chiropractic. Since becoming Sherman College’s fifth president in January 2013, Cordero and the college have grown enrollment to more than 400 students, and he has accomplished many campus improvements, the most notable being the addition of the Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi Student Center.

Debbie Cordero shares her husband’s passion for chiropractic. After her husband’s graduation, the family moved to Boynton Beach, FL, where she managed the day-to-day business of their private practice, including bookkeeping, scheduling, clinic work, and welcoming patients. Debbie also has credentials in entomology and is a certified master gardener.

CHIROPRACTOR OF THE YEAR Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, D.C.C.J.P. This award is bestowed upon doctors who have, through their service, given extraordinary time and effort to advance Sherman College and the principled chiropractic profession.

Jaime Browning is a 2009 graduate of Sherman College and is an associate professor and chair of the Technique Department. She has an advanced certification in Knee Chest Upper Cervical Specific technique and is a 2019 Diplomate in Craniocervical Junction Procedures as confirmed by the International Chiropractic Association (ICA). In 2018, Browning was named research chair of the ICA’s Upper Cervical Council, and was honored as Researcher of the Year in 2020.

Browning has served as chair of Sherman College’s Institutional Review Board since 2012, and is also chair of the college’s Academy of Chiropractic Excellence (ACE) intern program. She is the 2019 recipient of the Spirit of Sherman College Award.

REGENTS OF THE YEAR Lacey Book, D.C., and Shawn Dill, D.C. This award recognizes outstanding and continuous advancement of Sherman College through participation on the college’s Board of Regents, a group that supports quality chiropractic education and Sherman College through speaking engagements, leadership roles, student referrals and financial support.

Lacey Book is a cum laude graduate of Life Chiropractic College West. She is co-host of the El Salvador Outreach Program and is highly sought as a speaker, making numerous domestic and international appearances each year.

Shawn Dill is a 1995 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. For eight years, Dill practiced in Costa Rica, where he authored the law that regulates the practice of chiropractic in that country. Since returning to the U.S., Dill has become an international speaker, a noted authority in Upper Cervical Specific chiropractic, and a consultant on marketing, sales and entrepreneurship strategies for service professionals.

Book and Dill co-authored the book, None of Your Business, and serve as chief operating officer and chief executive officer of the chiropractic franchise, The Specific Chiropractic Centers, which operates 16 clinics from Kauai to Boston. They are also co-founders of Black Diamond Consulting, known as the Black Diamond Club.

Supporting Students Through Scholarships

by Development Coordinator Russell Goff, D.C., ’19 WITH THE LATEST ECONOMIC CHALLENGES, RISING ENERGY COSTS, AND RISING INFLATION, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A MORE CHALLENGING TIME FOR STUDENTS TO AFFORD CHIROPRACTIC COLLEGE. WITH QUARTERLY TUITION ON THE RISE, STUDENTS ARE OFTEN LOOKING FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP OFFSET COSTS WHILE IN SCHOOL. Over the past few years, our generous Sherman College donors have established a large number of new scholarships and opportunities. The staff at Sherman College have designed a few others, but most of these programs have originated from supporters of Sherman College approaching us about ways to create scholarship opportunities for our students.

We have recently established two memorial scholarships honoring members of Sherman College’s Pioneer class of 1976.

The families of Virginia Brannon, D.C., and Bill Hannouche, D.C., both contacted Sherman College to have donation pages created so that loved ones, colleagues and friends could send donations to Sherman College in their memory in lieu of flowers. Donations came in from across the nation honoring these first graduates.

Sherman College supporter and former trustee Liam Schubel, D.C., has established an annual scholarship in memory of his colleague and friend, the late Josh Thompson, D.C. The Josh Thompson International Chiropractic Pioneer Scholarship, valued at $1,000, is awarded each April in honor of Thompson’s birthday. The college’s first recipient was eighth-quarter student Leonard Koh of Singapore, a dean’s list student who plans to serve his community in Singapore as an associate following graduation.

The families of two longstanding faculty members have also decided to honor their loved ones by creating endowed scholarships in their names. The Wise Scholars Endowment was created by the family of the late Les Wise, D.C., in honor

of their husband and father. It is said that that Wise taught every student that attended Sherman College until his retirement in 2017.

Likewise, the children of John Porter Jr., D.C., ’77, created the John H. Porter Jr. Scholarship Fund. This fund was established to help lessen the financial burden faced by generations of future chiropractic students, allowing them to pursue careers of service like Porter, dedicated to the health and wellness of their communities.

Last fall, in celebration of his 35th year in practice, Samuel Sbarra, D.C., ’86, created a scholarship to cover the application fees of up to 35 students for the incoming winter class of 2022. Ten students qualified and received the Sam Sbarra Application Fee Scholarship, which offset fees associated with the

application process. Sbarra has committed to this being a standing scholarship opportunity, allowing up to 10 incoming students each quarter to have their application fees covered.

“We are so thankful for our donors who continue to find creative ways to support students and chiropractic education at Sherman College,” said Development Coordinator Russell Goff, D.C., a 2019 graduate. “It is an honor to work alongside our donors in support of Sherman College.

We are always happy to help make their dream a reality.”

Oklahaven Recognizes Sherman for “Have a Heart” Support The children’s chiropractic center Oklahaven has recognized Sherman College for its support during this year’s “Have-A-Heart” campaign.

Oklahaven’s College Award is presented to the chiropractic college and the clinic that raises the most funds for Oklahaven and its mission of healing children through chiropractic and educating parents on the chiropractic way of life.

Sherman College’s Network Club led the fundraiser and worked with the on-campus Chiropractic Health Center to collect $2,671 for this year’s event, held February 7-14. Donations were represented with hearts posted on the clinic’s staircase railing. Network Club’s Brooke Jackson led the effort and said she was happy to exceed the club’s goal this year.

Oklahaven announced winners in May, sharing that contributors’ support was greatly appreciated and that it “has helped the most profoundly hurt children on their journey to health and showing the world they can be well.”

Quest 7 Coaching Clients Sponsor Entire Class of Interns When Trustee Shawn Dill, D.C., learned about the needs of new interns entering clinic, he reached out to a group of his Quest 7 coaching clients to see if they wanted to help.

The response was an overwhelming “YES,” and the group quickly pooled their resources to send Sherman College a check for $9,500 to sponsor the clinical needs for all 33 incoming interns.

Sherman College created the Sponsor an Intern Program late last year to help lighten the financial burden on students as they enter the clinical phase of their education. While this time is an exciting transition, the cost can present a challenge for students.

Interns are responsible for purchasing their own nametags, business cards and clinic jackets, all necessary items as they begin caring for members of our local community. Supporters can choose an intern based on financial need and/or demographics; the cost to sponsor an intern is $250.

Through their generous philanthropic contribution, Quest 7 is helping an entire class of incoming interns experience less stress as they begin the life-changing opportunity of caring for patients in the clinic, where they gain hands-on experience under the watchful guidance of the college’s talented team of licensed doctors of chiropractic.

This capstone experience prepares interns for the many aspects of successful

practice—so they will be ready to join forces with graduates in the field and change the world through chiropractic.
