When talking about Ireland and its culture and symbolism, many different images come to mind. Affectionately known as the Emerald Isle, Ireland is perhaps best known for its bright green hue. Irish flags and even harps are
symbolic of the nation, but there is perhaps one symbol that most widely represents the country: the shamrock.
A shamrock, by definition, is a young sprig of clover. However, plant experts actually have said that
shamrocks are a distinct species of the clover plant, believed to be the white clover. The word “shamrock” is derived from the Irish “seamróg,” which translates as “young clover.” Over the centuries, this diminutive plant has come to symbolize Ireland and many things Irish. The shamrock also is a popular

symbol of St. Patrick’s Day.
The shamrock and Irish culture are so intertwined thanks to Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick. Legends attest to St. Patrick using the three petals of the shamrock to illustrate the mysteries of the Holy Trinity to the Celtic pagans. Each leaf represented the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The shamrock of Ireland has three leaves, not four as many people believe. The number three had significance in Ireland long before St. Patrick began to convert the masses. According to Blarney.com, the number three was believed to have magical properties and was a recurring theme in Celtic folklore. Because the Celts were familiar with the shamrock, it became easy to convert their knowledge of the shamrock to the magic of the trinity. The three leaves are also said
to stand for faith, hope and love.
The four-leaf clover is a separate entity and a rarity. That is why the fourth leaf is deemed to be “lucky.” But that lucky clover is not the traditional Irish symbol. Thanks to their connection with Ireland, shamrocks are often gifted by the Prime Minister (Taoiseach) to the President of the United States in the White House each St. Patrick’s Day. They are presented in a special Waterford crystal bowl featuring shamrocks in the design. This practice started in 1952. Shamrocks also can be seen on Irish clothing designs, the Erin go Bragh flag and the uniforms of several Irish sports teams. Of course they also are seen during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The shamrock and Ireland will always be linked.

Stone are unknown, but History.com notes the practice dates back several centuries. Legend suggests kissing the stone helps people become more eloquent and persuasive, and indeed numerous accomplished orators, including former British prime minister Winston Churchill, are among the millions of people who have kissed the stone over the centuries.
tle, visitors are urged to kiss the stone. But why?
The exact origins of the tradition of kissing the Blarney
Kissing the stone is no small feat, though it has become easier to do so in recent years. Prior to 2000, visitors to Blarney Castle who
wanted to kiss the stone had to pull off an acrobatic feat without much support, leaning over backwards while lying down on their backs as the upper part of their bodies hung over the parapet’s edge. However, guardrails were installed in 2000 to give visitors something to grab onto as they lean over the edge and kiss the stone. Visitors to Ireland who want to kiss the Blarney Stone should expect a line, as an estimated 400,000 people kiss the stone each year.

Approximately 22 miles south of Buffalo, Wyoming off the Middle Fork Road between I-25 and Highway 196. The Dike Acreage consists of 160 acres of deeded property surrounded by over 9,000 acres of State land. The property is fenced into one large pasture; however, the fence line does not follow the property boundary. Through a cooperative use trade agreement between the owner and the State grazing lessee, the fence line has been situated to avoid multiple crossings of the creek and the hilly terrain on the eastern side of the property. The property has historically been used to pasture horses and cattle. There are no building improvements on the property. The North Fork of Crazy Woman Creek zig zags through the property from northwest to southeast, providing just under 2 miles of stream frontage for fishing, rafting, or livestock water. Several species of game and non-game fish are known to populate this portion of the creek. Wildlife inhabiting the area include Deer, Antelope, Upland Birds, Rabbit, Fox, Raccoon, and Coyote. The property is located in Deer Hunt Area 30 and Antelope Hunt Area 20. Standard filtration often leaves behind contaminants in your water that if you knew were there, you wouldn’t want in your home. Depending on what’s in your water, you may need additional filtration or even a combination of water treatments to make sure it’s as clean as can be. There are two main ways to connect a filter to your home’s water—whole home systems and point of use systems.

College basketball fans have it made each March. Come March, scores of college hoops fans anxiously anticipate the tipoff to March Madness, which is a widely used nickname for the wildly popular NCAA Tournament, a single-elimination battle featuring 68 teams competing over seven rounds. Each team aspires to win the championship, but only one can walk away with the elusive trophy. That reality ups the ante with each game, and many a nail-biter and memorable moment has taken center stage during the tournament over the years.
As this year’s round of madness prepares to tip off, fans can look back at these memorable moments from tournaments past and ponder the many others that have made March such a fun, if frenzied, month.
• Princeton knocks off UCLA, March 14, 1996: Bruins fans may not find this moment all that memorable, but the thirteenth-seeded Tigers’ improbable upset of the defending national champions is among the most notable moments in NCAA Tournament history. Princeton’s 43-41 win marked the final victory of legendary coach Pete Carril’s career, and perhaps no newspaper better summarized the upset than Princeton’s student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian,
which featured the memorable headline “David 43, Goliath 41” the morning after the game.
• “The Shot,” March 13, 1998: March Madness fans who eagerly fill out their brackets each March know the matchups featuring a 13 seed are always unpredictable (see above), and that certainly held true in 1998. Down two points with just 2.5 seconds left, Valparaiso shocked the world and sent the University of Mississippi home when guard Bryce Drew, the son of head coach Homer Drew, sank a 23-foot three-pointer as time expired.
• A 16 finally beats a 1, March 16, 2018: Few likely imagined the sixteenth-seeded University of Maryland, Baltimore County defeating the tournament’s top overall seed, the University of Virginia, in the opening round, much less doing so in convincing fashion. But that’s precisely what the Retrievers did, outscoring the Cavaliers by 20 points in the second half as they cruised to a 74-54 victory and made history as the first 16 seed to defeat a number one seed.
• A halfcourt heave stuns the defending champs, March 14, 1981: There’s something about March Madness that compels hoopsters to save their most memorable moments for a game’s final seconds, and that’s precisely what happened when Arkansas’s U.S. Reed stunned the defending champion Louisville Cardinals in the second round. Down a point with six seconds remaining after leading for most of the game, Arkansas was facing dim prospects for advancement. A swarming Louisville press made it unlikely Arkansas was
going to get a good shot, and that played out. Reed was forced to heave a 49-footer from a stride or two behind the half court line. The shot improbably went in and the Razorbacks advanced.
• The Heels’ hopes are lifted, and then sank, April 4, 2016: Much like UCLA fans would not fondly recall their upset loss to Princeton in 1996, fans of the storied program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill might find it hard to characterize their 77-74 title game defeat at the hands of the Villanova Wildcats as a night to remember. But few title games have featured closing moments as dramatic as this one. After the Tar Heels’ Marcus Paige double-clutched and sank a game-tying three pointer with 4.7 seconds left, the Wildcats’ Kris Jenkins answered with a buzzer-beating three-pointer of his own, securing Villanova’s first national championship since 1985.
Traditional Irish stew may get a lot of fanfare, but another hearty, stick-to-your-ribs dish can chase away the chill after a day spent cheering along St. Patrick’s Day parade participants: seafood chowder.
Ireland is an island nation, and many delicious dishes have been inspired by its surrounding seas. One bowl of seafood chowder may convince people to revere it as much as other broth-based dishes.
Chowder is a type of stew or soup prepared with milk or cream and thickened with other ingredients. Seafood is often a protein of choice in these dishes, and this recipe for “Seafood Chowder With Crispy Bread
Crumbs,” courtesy of “Real Simple Easy, Delicious Home Cooking” (Time Home Entertainment) from the Real Simple Kitchens, delivers all of the classic chowder flavors.
Seafood Chowder With Crispy Bread Crumbs
Serves 4
1 slice sandwich bread, torn into pieces
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 leeks (light green and white parts only), thinly sliced
1⁄2 cup dry white wine
1 8-ounce bottle clam juice
11⁄2 pounds skinless cod, halibut, or sea bass fillet, cut into 2-inch pieces
12 littleneck clams and/or 1⁄2 pound cockles
1 cup half-and-half Kosher salt and black pepper
2tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
Heat oven to 400 F. In a food processor, pulse the bread and 2 tablespoons of the oil to form coarse crumbs. Spread on a rimmed baking sheet and toast, tossing once, until golden, 6 to 8 minutes.
Meanwhile, heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 4 to 5 minutes.
Add the wine to the saucepan and cook until reduced by half, about 2 minutes more. Add the clam juice and 11⁄2 cups water and bring to a boil.
Add the cod and clams to the saucepan, reduce heat and simmer gently, covered, until the cod is opaque throughout and the clams have opened, 4 to 6 minutes. (Discard clams that remain closed).
Stir the half-and-half, 1⁄2 teaspoon salt and 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper into the chowder, and cook until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve sprinkled with the parsley and bread crumbs.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17. St. Patrick was a larger-than-life figure who has been ingrained in Irish culture and was the catalyst for a holiday celebration that now stretches around the world.
Much of what is shared about St. Patrick is based on folklore and exaggerated storytelling, according to historians. Snakes famously banished from Ireland? Snakes have never existed on the island to even be banished! Getting to the truth of St. Patrick the man takes a little digging through the fanciful tales.

St. Patrick was born to a wealthy family in modern-day Great Britain near the end of the fourth century. There is no evidence that Patrick came from a particularly religious family, and History.com says it was likely Patrick’s father became a Christian deacon because of tax incentives and not religious devotion. Patrick only arrived in Ireland after being taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who attacked his family’s estate. He spent ages 16 to 22 in captivity and was likely held in County Mayo.
Finding religion
Patrick spent many hours working outdoors as a shepherd during his imprisonment. Being afraid and likely lonely, he found comfort in his religion and became a devout Christian. As Ireland was largely pagan at this time, he began dreaming of converting the Irish people to Christianity.
Even though Patrick escaped imprisonment, believing it was the voice of God telling him it was time to leave, once he returned to Britain, he had a second revelation that he should return to Ireland as a missionary. It was then his religious training began, and it lasted more than 15 years. Eventually Patrick was ordained a priest and began ministering to Christians already living in Ireland and converting others.
St. Patrick wrote an autobiography
Much of what is known about St. Patrick comes from two works that he wrote about his life, known as “Confessio” and “Epistola.” In “Confessio,” Patrick responds to the fact that he was on trial for mysterious reasons, although he never names the crimes for which he was accused. Historians surmise that he took bribes because Patrick mentions returning or paying for gifts given to him.
St. Patrick didn’t introduce Christianity
Although Patrick played the most influential role in spreading Christianity to Ireland, he wasn’t the first to do so. However, he did organize the followers who already existed and converted kingdoms which were still pagan. St. Patrick also connected Ireland with the Church of the Roman Empire.
St. Patrick helped the shamrock become a symbol of Irish nationalism
The shamrock, also known as a three-leaf clover, and formerly the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant that symbolized spring. St. Patrick, according to legend, used this familiar plant as a visual guide to explain the Holy Trinity of Christianity. By the 17th century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism, according to History.com. St. Patrick is well known in Ireland and elsewhere in part because of the legends about his days on earth. The true history sheds even more light on the man behind the legend.

Invisibility, leprechauns and national pride tied to wearing green blue. Some ancient Irish flags even sported the color blue. According to National Geographic, the color green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day in the 18th century, when the shamrock became a national symbol of Ireland. The color of the shamrock and Ireland’s natural landscape forever linked green to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and the Emerald Isle. There are reasons for donning green clothing on
to pinch people who don’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns might sneak up on them at any time.
Beyond shamrocks and leprechauns, other people are inclined to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day as a symbol of good luck and to honor their Irish ancestry. According to Brian Witt, the cultural exhibits coordinator for Milwaukee Irish fest, Irish Americans would wear green as a reminder that they are nationalists first and foremost. The Irish flag colors are green,
white and orange. The green symbolizes Irish nationalism, the orange represents the “Orangemen” of Northern Ireland, which is an Irish Protestant political society, and the white symbolizes peace.
