100 Years Ago This Month: Historical events from September 1923
Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in September 1923.
• Half of Tokyo is destroyed when an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 strikes Japan just before midday on September 1. More than 120,000 people are killed and an additional two million are homeless in the aftermath of the earthquake.
• The International Criminal Police Commission is founded on September 7 in Vienna. Later known as Interpol, the organization maintains a presence in much of the world today.
• Hyperinflation in Germany prompts a parade of housewives to march through Berlin carrying empty baskets on September
8. The empty baskets are chosen to symbolize the women’s inability to buy food.
• The Irish Free State, established in December 1922, is admitted to the League of Nations on September 10.
• More than 2,500 communists are arrested in Bulgaria on September 12. The government suspects those arrested of plotting an uprising.
• Oklahoma governor Jack C. Walton declares martial law on September 15 in an effort to combat the Ku Klux Klan. Walton also suspends the writ of habeas corpus in Tulsa County. Walton is ultimately impeached on October 23 before being removed from office on November 18.
• Nearly 600 houses and 56 additional buildings are destroyed by a wildfire in Berkeley, California, on September 17. Remarkably, no one dies as a result of the fast-moving fire, though the National Board of Fire Underwriters estimates total property losses of $10,000,000.

HAND MADE CUSTOM BUILT & WARRANTEED GRILL GUARDS. All sprayed w/Superliner. Polish Linings 6739104, polishlinings.com(ts)
Crisps are desserts that have streusel-like toppings, and are close cousins to cobblers, which feature more of a biscuit topping. The crunch of the streusel on this “Apple Crisp” from “Danielle Walker’s Eat What You Love” (Ten Speed Press) is addictive. It replaces a traditional oats or flour-sugar mixture crisp into something those who are gluten-free can enjoy.
Serves 8 to 10
3⁄4 cup cashew flour
1⁄4 cup coconut flour
3 tablespoons arrowroot flour
1⁄4 cup maple sugar
1⁄4 cup coconut sugar
1⁄4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1⁄2 cup chilled ghee, or palm
1⁄2 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
3 pounds baking apples
Finely grated zest of 1 orange
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1⁄4 cup pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1⁄2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1⁄4 teaspoon ground allspice
Whipped cream (dairy or nondairy), optional
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
In a large mixing bowl, mix together the cashew flour, coconut flour, arrowroot, maple sugar, coconut sugar, and salt. Mix the ghee into the flour mixture using a pastry blender or two knives, until the mixture has
the texture of coarse sand. Add the shredded coconut, and use your hands to toss and squeeze the mixture until large, moist clumps form. Place the bowl in the freezer to chill while you prepare the filling. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into large wedges. In a 2-quart baking dish, combine the apples with the orange zest, lemon zest, lemon juice, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Remove the topping from the freezer and scatter it over the apples. Place the baking dish on a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour, until the top is brown and the sauce is bubbling. Serve warm with whipped cream on top.

5 fun facts about the month of September
September marks a return to the norm for millions of households. School is back in session, summer vacation season has ended and fall begins. Routines take shape and life once again becomes more structured in September. As that transition takes place, individuals can consider these fun facts about the month of September.
1. Though Latin is no longer widely spoken or taught, plenty of words, including September, trace their origins to the language of ancient Rome and its empire. “Septem” is the Latin word for “seven,” and September was originally the seventh month of the Roman calendar.
2. Though the autumnal equinox, which marks the official beginning of fall, does not occur until later in the month, the unofficial end to summer occurs in the first weekend of September. Americans celebrate Labor Day and Canadians celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday in September, and millions of people in both countries consider that weekend the last hurrah for summer relaxation and revelry.
3. Labor Day is not the only holiday to be celebrated in September. In fact, Rosh Hashanah, a Jewish holiday that is often referred to as the “Jewish New Year,” also is celebrated in September in many years (the holiday occurs 163 days after the first
day of Passover, so in certain years it is celebrated in early October). The Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur also can be celebrated in September or October, and Constitution Day, which commemorates the adoption of the United States constitution in 1787, is celebrated on September 17. Patriot Day also occurs annually on September 11 and is a day to remember the people killed in the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.
4. Though its name might suggest otherwise, Oktoberfest actually begins in late September. Modern Oktoberfest celebrations, particularly those outside the Bavaria region of Germany, may have little to do with a marriage, but the festival traces its origins to the marriage of Kronprinz Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities, and more than two centuries later that jovial atmosphere dominates the city, and countless others across the globe, during Oktoberfest.
5. Football fans circle the month of September on their calendars, as the month marks the return of the National Football League regular season. The reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs will host the Detroit Lions in the NFL Kickoff Game on September 7, and the rest of the league will take to the gridiron on September 10 and 11. That’s a big deal for millions of fans across the country, as the NFL remains wildly popular. In fact, an analysis by the Sports Business Journal found that pergame attendance averaged 69,442 fans in 2022, which marked the second-largest figure in 19 years.

Buffalo, Johnson County, Wyoming
Listing Price: $640,000.
Private — Scenic Mountain

Many excellent locations for a homesite.
Approximately 22 miles south of Buffalo, Wyoming off the Middle Fork Road between I-25 and Highway 196. The Dike Acreage consists of 160 acres of deeded property sur rounded by over 9,000 acres of State land. The property is fenced into one large pasture; however, the fence line does not follow the property bound ary. Through a cooperative use trade agreement between the owner and the State grazing lessee, the fence line has been situated to avoid multiple crossings of the creek and the hilly terrain on the eastern side of the property. The property has historically been used to pasture horses and cattle. There are no building improvements on the property. The North Fork of Crazy Woman Creek zig zags through the property from northwest to southeast, providing just under 2 miles of stream frontage for fishing, rafting, or livestock water. Several species of game and non-game fish are known to populate this portion of the creek. Wildlife inhabiting the area include Deer, Antelope, Upland Birds, Rabbit, Fox, Raccoon, and Coyote. The property is located in Deer Hunt Area 30 and Antelope Hunt Area 20.

Chocolate Meringue Kisses
Yields about 3 dozen meringues
2 large egg whites
1⁄4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Pinch of salt
1⁄2 cup Baker’s Special Sugar
1⁄4 cup unsweetened cocoa, Dutchprocess or natural, sifted
2 cups Valrhona Dark Chocolate or other good-quality dark chocolate, tempered (see below), for dipping
1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, combine the egg whites, cream of tartar and salt. Whip until soft peaks form.
3. Gradually add the sugar, whipping until the mixture is stiff and glossy.
4. Gently fold the sifted cocoa powder into the meringue until evenly incorporated.
5. Fit a piping bag with a 1⁄2-inch or larger round tip and spoon the meringue into the bag.
6. Position the tip and bag directly over the prepared pan, and pipe the meringues onto the parchment, leaving 1 inch of space between the meringues.
7. Place the meringues into the preheated oven, then turn the oven off.
8. Let the meringues sit in the oven (keep the door closed) overnight, or until the oven is completely cool.
9. Remove the meringues from the oven.
10. To temper the chocolate, place 11⁄2 cups of chocolate in a temperer or in a double boiler and melt until completely smooth.

Local businesses contribute to greater wealth in their communities. According to data from Civic Economics, for every $100 spent at local businesses, around $73 remains in the local economy. By comparison, only $43 remains in the local economy when people shop at non-locally-owned businesses. Proceeds come from paying taxes that support the community, and local businesses buy supplies from other local businesses, further benefitting their economies. All of this keeps much more money within local communities.

Bite into these facts about hot dogs
Hot dogs are the yin to the hamburger’s yang. Franks and burgers are a common pair at barbecues and ballparks, and rightfully so. Handheld, portable meals, they pack a convenient and flavorful punchy. Few foods may seem as American as hot dogs. However, hot dogs are derivative of European sausages. This fact and more can shed light on the humble hot dog, which is sure to find its way to a grill near you this summer.
BEAUTIFUL 2 BEDROOM APARTMENTS FOR RENT!
ing what hot dogs contain, hot dogs are cured and cooked sausages that contain mainly pork, beef, chicken, and turkey. The meats come from the muscle of the animals. If a product contains organ meats, it must be declared on the packaging.
• In 1867, Charles Feltman made a cart with a stove on it, which he used to boil sausages. The cart also had compartments to keep buns fresh. Carts that sell hot dogs on the street are now seen in cities across the country.
• Hot dogs are a NASAapproved food for astronauts.
Standard filtration often leaves behind contaminants in your water that if you knew were there, you wouldn’t want in your home. Depending on what’s in your water, you may need additional filtration or even a combination of water treatments to make sure it’s as clean as can be. There are two main ways to connect a filter to your home’s water—whole home systems and point of use systems.
Water Softeners are available for sale or rent.
• Mental Floss says it’s pretentious to consume a hot dog with utensils. Hot dog etiquette experts also insist adults should not top their hot dogs with ketchup, which they suggest is a topping strictly reserved for children.
• Hot dogs are often associated with New York City. However, hot dogs gained popularity across the country in the 20th century.
• Hot dogs are often called frankfurters. This refers to Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages similar to hot dogs are believed to have originated.
• Hot dogs were given their name by cartoonist Tad Dorgan. He observed a vendor selling “hot dachshund sausage dogs” during a baseball game at New York City’s Polo Grounds. As legend has it, Dorgan couldn’t spell the name of the dog, instead writing only “hot dogs.” The name eventually caught on.
• Despite several jokes as well as speculation regard-
• While hot dogs are sold at many venues, data indicates that the popular convenience store chain 7-Eleven sells the most grilled hot dogs in North America, with 100 million sold annually.
• Relish, sauerkraut and even ketchup are popular hot dog toppings. But mustard is by far the most popular.
• Why are there typically 10 hot dogs per pack and only eight buns per bag? When hot dogs were first introduced, they were sold at varying quantities at the butcher shop. Hot dogs were eventually standardized to packages of 10, but buns are baked in clusters of four in popular pans designed to hold eight rolls. Hot dogs are a summertime staple that have an interesting and extensive history.

The important role played by bees in lawns and gardens
A colorful garden in full bloom is an aesthetically appealing sight each spring and summer. The pleasant aromas emanating from such spaces only add to their appeal.
Many variables contribute to a thriving garden, and perhaps none is more important than bees. North America is home to thousands of species of beers, but many of those species are experiencing dwindling populations. According to Scott McArt, an assistant professor of pollinator health in the Department of Entomology at Cornell University, 53 bee species have experienced population declines or range contractions over the last several decades. Individuals accustomed to seeing bees as unwanted guests may wonder why that’s a problem. Though declining bee populations pose a number of problems, perhaps none is more relatable than the link between bees and food production. A recent study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences noted that declines in both managed and wild bee populations raise significant concerns about long-term food security. Authors of the study noted that crop production would be higher if crop flowers received more pollination. That’s a significant benefit as the global population continues to increase, but it’s also a notable benefit in the present-day from both a food security and economic perspective. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that commercial production of more than 90 crops relies on roughly 3,600 bee species. Declining bee populations could put that production in serious jeopardy and create a domino effect that impacts food security and individuals’ livelihoods.
But all is not lost in the fight to restore bee populations. In fact, McArt indicated in a 2019 report that bee populations are thriving in agricultural and natural areas. But bee populations also must thrive in suburban and urban areas. Planting a pollinator-friendly garden is one step McArt suggested gardening hobbyists can take to help restore bee populations. When planting to combat declining bee populations, homeowners should always look for native plants, as they are well-adapted to local climates and unlikely to upset local ecosystems. Local garden centers can be great resources for anyone looking to plant native species. According to HGTV, the following are just a handful of the many bee-friendly garden flowers and plants homeowners can consider for their gardens:
• Bee balm • Honeysuckle
• Sunflower • Cosmos
• Strawberries • Dahlia
• Butterfly bush • Crocus
• Pot marigold • Geraniums
Bee populations are in decline. If efforts to restore those populations are not embraced, the consequences for future generations could be dire. Homeowners can do their part by planting bee-friendly flowers and plants on their properties.
