Word games require critical thinking skills that could stimulate the brain. Word games train the brain in a way that’s similar to how physical activity trains the body.
Word games continue to be popular pastimes and provide a great opportunity to engage in lighthearted competition among family and friends.
Wordle is perhaps the most popular word game to become popular in recent years. Created by software engineer and former Reddit employee Josh Wardle and launched in October 2021, Wordle was devised as a way to pass the time during the pandemic lockdown. Today it is played by millions of people and was even purchased by The New York Times Company in 2022.
For those who are looking for something even newer, Knotwords, a word game created by Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger, is available on iOS, Android and
Steam. It’s a mix between a word scramble, crossword puzzle and sudoku.
There are scores of other word games for people to try. In addition to their entertainment value, these games may provide some benefits that surprise even the most devoted wordsmiths.
• Build your vocabulary: Word games enrich vocabulary and may introduce people to new words. They also may help reinforce spelling skills.
• Improve focus: Nowadays people are pulled in many directions and are expected to multitask more than ever. Word games in large part require focusing exclusively on the task at hand and employing strategy.
• Stimulate the brain:
• Improve memory: According to WebMD, word games may help seniors avoid memory loss and possibly delay the onset of dementia. But seniors are not the only ones to benefit. Word games may improve short-term memory and the cognitive abilities of people of all ages.
• Boosts feel-good substances: When a person is happy, the body releases endorphins, which are feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters. Healthline indicates an “endorphin rush” often occurs after engaging in a fun activity. Endorphins are released by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Playing word games may release endorphins, which can improve mood, boost selfesteem and reduce pain and discomfort. These are just a handful of the many positive ways word games can affect the mind and body.

This recipe for “Tortilla Soup” from “The Complete Mexican, South American & Caribbean Cookbook” by Jane Milton, Jenni Fleetwood and Marina Filippelli (Metro Books) can be served as an appetizer or light meal. The crispy tortilla strips included in the recipe add extra texture to a delicious dish.
Tortilla Soup
Serves 4
4 corn tortillas, freshly made or a few days old
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus extra for frying
1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 114-ounce can plum tomatoes, drained
4 cups chicken stock
Small bunch cilantro
Salt and ground black pepper
Using a sharp knife, cut each tortilla into 4 or 5 strips, each measuring about 3⁄4 inches wide.
Pour vegetable oil to a depth of 3⁄4 inch into a heavy frying pan. Heat until a small piece of tortilla, added to the oil, floats on the top and bubbles at the edges.
Add a few tortilla strips to the hot oil and fry for a few minutes, until crisp and golden brown all over, turning them occasionally. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a double layer of paper towels. Cook the remaining tortilla strips in the same way. Heat the 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large, heavy pan. Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spatula, until the onion is soft and translucent. Do not let the garlic turn brown or it will give the soup a bitter taste.
Chop the tomatoes using a large, sharp knife and add them to the onion mixture in the pan. Pour in the chicken stock and stir well. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, until the liquid has reduced slightly. Chop the cilantro. Add to the soup, reserving a little to use as a garnish. Season to taste.
Place a few of the crisp tortilla pieces in the bottom of four warmed soup bowls. Ladle the soup on top. Sprinkle each portion with the reserved chopped cilantro and serve.

‘Tis the season for frost and snow, which means coming downstairs in the morning to a chilly home. One way to rally the troops
out of bed when it’s cold and snowy is to reward family with a warm breakfast. Muffins are a go-to choice for a quick bite, and homemade muffins served right out of the oven can be just what’s needed on blustery days. This recipe for “Triple Chocolate Muffins” from “Chocolate” (Parragon Book Service), by the editors of the Love Food series, imparts rich, chocolately flavor into every bite of these mouthwatering muffins. They’re equal parts breakfast and dessert.
Makes 12
13⁄4 cups all-purpose flour
1⁄3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda
1⁄2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1⁄2 cup white chocolate chips
2 large eggs beaten
11⁄4 cup sour cream
6 tablespoons packed brown sugar
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Preheat the oven to 400
F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners. Sift
the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and baking soda into a large bowl. Add the semisweet and white chocolate chips, and stir. Place the eggs, sour cream, sugar, and melted butter in a separate mixing bowl, and mix well. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and stir gently until just combined. Using two spoons, divide the batter evenly among the paper liners. Then bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until well risen and firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and serve warm, or place on a cooling rack and let cool.

Families that want to spend more time together can find a fun way to do just that by working together on something they already do each day. Cooking meals together as a family can add some fun to a task that’s already a part of many families’ daily routines.
Children can learn quite a bit from cooking, as preparing recipes can reinforce school lessons. Family cooking nights also pose a great opportunity to create lasting memories. Various sources indicate that children are more likely to remember experiences from their youth rather than the presents they receive. Some of those cherished experiences can be enjoyed in the kitchen alongside mom and dad.
In addition to creating lasting, fun memories, cooking together as a family may make children less likely to complain about foods since they have
lent a hand in their creation. Furthermore, cooking together fosters a special feeling of unity and may establish a nopressure, safe space for conversation.
With so many benefits, families may be wondering how they can foster and improve time spent together in the kitchen. Here are some ways to do so.
• Organize age-appropriate tasks. Little hands can only handle so much. A toddler can pour and stir ingredients, while an older child or teenager may be be ready to chop ingredients or sauté at the stove.
• Expect some mess. Parents and other adults should go into any meal creation process with children expecting things to get a tad messy. It may be possible to minimize messes by setting up workstations covered by plastic tablecloths which can be folded up and shaken into the trash. Encourage children
to sit down so they don’t inadvertently spread any messes to another part of the house.
• Begin with simple recipes. An initial foray into family cooking should involve a recipe that’s easy to prepare and perhaps doesn’t require too many ingredients. Build on each success after that, growing bolder with each subsequent recipe.
• Make it a multi-generational experience. For many families, Sunday was the opportunity to gather at grandma’s house after religious worship or to check in and spend time together.
Rekindle this tradition by hosting weekly or monthly family meals where everyone gets to take part in bringing the meal to the table. This is an ideal opportunity for grandparents to pass down family recipes and regale grandchildren with funny stories and memories.
• Plan for things to take a little extra time. Preparation time is
likely to take a bit longer when multiple hands are stirring the pot. Families can slow down and employ some patience.
Adults should resist the urge to take over when children may not be doing things the right way. If meals need to be on the table at certain times, start an hour or two earlier than you otherwise would to account for some confusion and even a potential restart.
• Eliminate as many distractions as possible. The kitchen may be the heart of the home, but it can be dangerous to be around knives and other cooking utensils and instruments. Distractions like televisions or phones can draw attention away and potentially lead to injuries from pots boiling over or children getting too close to hot flames.
Cooking as a family is very beneficial and can be made even more so with some handy tips.

Standard filtration often leaves behind contaminants in your water that if you knew were there, you wouldn’t want in your home. Depending on what’s in your water, you may need additional filtration or even a combination of water treatments to make sure it’s as clean as can be. There are two main ways to connect a filter to your home’s water—whole home systems and point of use systems.

Genealogy fascinates much of the general public. The number of people learning more about their families and heritage through genealogy increases year to year. According to FamilyTree. com, genealogy is the second only to gardening as the most popular hobby in the United States.
People explore genealogy for many reasons, including learning about their ancestry. A rundown of the basics of genealogy can make such pursuits more enjoyable.
Genealogy and family history are subtly different
Genealogy is a line of descent traced continuously from an ancestor, while family history is defined as the history or narrative of a family. They are intertwined but not synonymous.
Vital records are key
Genealogists explore vital records to obtain information about their ancestors. Vital records include documentation of ancestors’ life events, including births, deaths, marriages, and more. Civil registration began at different times around the world, and even across North America, so it’s often challenging, though entirely possible, to develop an accurate history.
Surnames may be different
Surnames were not commonplace until around the eleventh century in Europe, according to S.C. Perkins, who is the author of a mystery series featuring a Texas genealogist as the protagonist. Surnames fall into four general categories:
they were emigrating to.
Discovering records of ancestors can be even more challenging because of shifting borders or municipalities, which change over time. The Family Tree Factbook provides European maps from throughout history and a timeline of European border changes that can help with research.
In addition to uncovering
mysteries of one’s heritage, dabbling in genealogy helps to preserve family history by confirming tales and tracing ancestors’ journeys. It also may help shed light on the history of artifacts or jewelry that ancestors owned and passed down.
A motivator behind genealogy research is to uncover relatives. Cousins from all over the world can discover they are related and bridge
the gap between them through shared genetics and history. This may be particularly important to those who were adopted and hope to understand more about where they came from for personal or health-related reasons.
Genealogy is a growing hobby that can be quite rewarding. Thanks to the internet and growing databases of civil records, it’s now easier than ever to trace family histories.

1. Place or geographical features (i.e., “Hill”)
2. Nicknames or appearance (“Little”)
3. Occupation (“Baker”)
4. Father’s name (“Peterson”)
Some names may not have been recorded correctly, so a person’s last name actually may be a derivative of the real name or a misspelling. Often immigrants changed their own surnames to make them sound more American or more native to wherever
