GOING THE EXTRA MILE Going the second mile is where the greatest pleasure comes from. Take the couple who donated the car on the cover. Instead of trading their car in they donated their car. Perhaps it is a little more trouble to bring a car to a Sheridan House than it is to trade it in. But their extra-mile-effort was a life-changer for Julie and her four wonderful children! In Matthew 5:41, Jesus is responding to the dilemma Jews in Israel were facing. Jewish men were required to carry the equipment of a Roman soldier for one mile, without question. When a soldier asked them to carry their equipment, there were no options. They asked Jesus what to do about it. Jesus said, “If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” In other words, do more than you are required to do. Choose to go beyond obedience, by choosing to carry the load a second mile. Donating a car for a single mom is going beyond the call of duty. Volunteering at an event is going beyond anything required. Taking the time to go to a local auto tag agency to order a Family Values license plate is going the second mile. Going the second mile is a great starting point of serving children and families in need. When we go beyond what we have to do, we are secondmile-followers of Jesus Christ. How different would our culture be if we all went the second mile?
