A Note From Bob -

It’s all about family! Mike keeps visiting the home and house parents he spent time with when he lived at Sheridan House. Why? Because they are his “other” family. When another mom named Katie, (whose son is at Sheridan House), had family photos taken, she wanted the house parents in the picture. Again, why? The house parents are their other family. We work with the child to help the family function as it should. It is not our intention to separate the child from his family. Our purpose is to help put families back together by coming alongside them to help raise the next generation of leaders who are Christ-followers. When you help Sheridan House, that’s exactly what you are doing. You are helping families work as they should.

America will never be changed by the White House. America can and must be changed by your house and my house by raising up leaders who know Jesus Christ and who has the personal discipline and discernment to lead, by serving Him.

Slowly I realized that I didn’t need to be angry at the parents who loved me enough to get help. Next I figured out that Sheridan House was a great place to be if I just followed the rules.” The positive changes were becoming more consistent and evident to all the people in his life and at school. “Sheridan House was not the enemy, it was my safe place to grow and change my destructive behavior. My family was now valuable to me, school was easy and I trusted Mom and Pop that they were on my side.”

Because you help, they get help Kitchen crew was busy washing dishes, sweeping and mopping after dinner when a knock came at the front door. To our surprise, our Sheridan House graduate Mike walked in with a huge grin on his face and big hugs for us. He had good news to tell and a question to ask. “I have straight A’s in college this semester AND I would like the opportunity to come and talk to the boys and encourage them, would that be possible?” We quickly decided on a date and were excited to hear what he wanted to share with our new crew of nine boys currently enrolled in our program.

Both moms shed a few happy tears that night as they listened to Mike’s story as it began to unfold; the younger boys eagerly asked serious questions. Pop beamed, as Mike stood tall and spoke courageously in front of the boys. He was encouraging them to stay strong and work hard to change their negative behaviors. Afterward the boys begged Mike to stay a bit longer and play ping-pong and video games. It was a beautiful full circle moment. The boy who tried desperately to leave, keeps coming House project back as a thoughtful young man who now with Mike in 2015 wants to stay a bit longer.

A few weeks later, Mike came back to tell his story. He started by explaining the anger he felt towards his divorced parents, the frustration with his older brother and his rage over the decision to be placed in a residential program. Mike was legendary for his resistance to comply with the house rules and his ability to organize the other boys in misconduct at school. The boys listened intently and identified with every word. Mike told them “At first I just faked improvements to try to get out of Sheridan House.
