Sometimes the immediate needs of a single parent loom so large that they obscure the real need. Yes, tires are important, especially in the short term. But in the long term, figuring out how to “Do Family” is so much more important. The single parents who come to us for help generally get help when they need food. Further help, however is contingent upon them coming to our Single Parent Classes. We give monthly classes on topics such as God’s Plan For your Life, Parenting, Budgeting, There’s no Mister Wonderful, etc. Participation in the classes opens the door to much more help such as tires. We never want to just give a handout. We always want to be giving a hand up. Sheridan House is responding to immediate as a way to reach the deeper needs. Helping parents today to raise leaders for tomorrow.

It’s difficult to imagine how much can be done with a tire, but we got to see it firsthand. For the past two Christmas, Sheridan House did more than help single parents with toys for their children. Thanks to a very generous donation from The Batchelor Foundation, several men walked the parking lot while moms were in our toy store. Their assignment was to check out the condition of the tires on the cars. Some of the tires they saw were frightening. But, as one mom said through her tears, tires as so expensive and just one of those things that are difficult if not impossible to afford. The men tagged the cars and the moms were told to come in to talk to us. It was an amazingly emotional time. The moms were sent to Toyota of Hollywood where the tires purchased by Sheridan House were then mounted and balanced at no charge. As one mom said, “This gives me so much hope, praise God!”
