The Sheridan House Counseling Centers are a perfect example. In 1984 I was finishing my Doctoral studies at FAU and needed to tape counseling sessions to be critiqued by my professors. They gave me permission to do the taping in my office at Sheridan House, so I put the word out that I needed help. I needed individuals who would agree to be anonymously recorded during a counseling session.
I remember saying to a friend, “I think I’ve made a mistake. Over thirty couples responded and I was immediately in trouble! I remember saying to a friend, “I think I’ve made a mistake. I can’t possibly do all this counseling and work with the boys homes at the same time.” That’s when Dr. Jim Vigorito and Dr. Don McCulloch offered to help. Today, there are two Sheridan House counseling locations that hold over three-thousand sessions a year. God wasn’t going to wait for me to figure this out. The need was and still is too great to wait. What I initially saw as a mistake, God has used as the launch of a ministry to help people in their time of need. It works because He works!

When YOU Need Help
Jack and Allie are a typical couple. They had been married for seven years, and
were busy with their careers, active in the activities of their two children and very active in their church. Unfortunately, they weren’t actively working on their marriage. Jack was totally unaware that Allie was starting to question whether she wanted to stay in the marriage. Fortunately, Allie expressed her doubt to a friend. When Allie’s friend told her that she had marriage problems in the past, Allie was shocked and stated, “You guys seem so great together.” Then she heard her friend say, “That’s because we called the Sheridan House Counseling Center and got help.” Allie’s first response to her friend was, “We tried counseling a couple years ago at my job; but after that experience, I don’t believe I will ever get Jack to go to another counselor.”

“Sheridan House counseling is different,” Allie’s friend continued. “The counselors are professionals that also take into account your faith. You said ‘You guys seem great’ and that is because God used Sheridan House to give us the tools to understand each other and make our marriage a priority. I don’t know if we’d still be together today if our pastor hadn’t recommended Sheridan House.”
Allie’s story took place three years ago. She and Jack came to Sheridan House for help and today they’re not just married. Now they are using the tools they were given to make investments in their marriage. Allie will be forever grateful for her friend’s advice to go to Sheridan House for help.
