Admissions Process 13+ entry Sherborne School is a selective school and all boys wishing to gain entry must sit our entrance assessment, following registration with us.

Boys are normally tested in January of Year 7 at one of our Assessment Days. The boys sit online tests and will complete a piece of creative writing. They will also have an interview with a senior member of our academic staff and undertake a group task.

Late applications may be considered but only if places are likely to be available.

As part of the assessment process, Sherborne will apply to your son’s current school for an up to date reference.

16+ entry A limited number of places are also available for Sixth Form entrance. Boys are normally tested in November of Year 11 on our Sixth Form Assessment Day. Late applications will be considered but only if places are likely to be available. The boys sit online tests and will also have an interview with a senior member of our academic staff.

All offers to UK boys will be conditional and will be confirmed once we are in receipt of your son’s (I)GCSE results. In order to be eligible to study in the Sixth Form your son will need to achieve an average of a minimum C grade, or a 4, across all of their (I)GCSEs. To study a subject at A Level boys must achieve either an A or an A* grade (or a 7, 8 or a 9) in that subject (or an appropriate and similar alternative) at (I)GCSE. Offer and Acceptance Places are offered following assessment and you will usually have up to one month to decide whether you wish to accept the place. Parents are required to sign the Parent Contract Form and this, together with the acceptance deposit, guarantees the place for your son at Sherborne, subject to him meeting any other entry requirements in place at the time.

Boarding House Allocation Families can complete a House Preference Form indicating up to three Houses that they would like their son to be considered for. This will be looked at when placing boys in Houses although no guarantee will be given that a boy will be assigned to a requested House. The School will make the final decision regarding House placement.

Priority will be given to requests made on behalf of the sons and grandsons of Old Shirburnians or boys with siblings who attend or have attended the School.

House allocations will be made after places have been accepted, usually during the Easter of Year 8.

Scholarships and Awards Sherborne invites talented and enthusiastic boys to apply for up to two of the various scholarships and exhibitions that are available. We offer a range of these awards from academic and creative to musical and sporting. In return for demonstrating high levels of talent and commitment in their chosen discipline(s), award holders are given many opportunities to stretch themselves and develop their abilities through involvement in additional tutoring, coaching, lectures, societies and social activities.

Sherborne is also able to offer a number of scholarships and exhibitions to pupils for Sixth Form entry.

Boys wishing to be considered for any award must have already satisfied the School’s academic entry standards. Further information on all of our scholarships and awards can be found on our website or via the Admissions Department.

Academic Programme

Third Form Curriculum All boys follow the same core curriculum in the Third Form but there is some variation depending on ability and previous experience. Choices concerning (I)GCSEs are made in the second half of the Lent term when boys’ academic strengths and interests will be more evident and when they have had time to make decisions based on experience.

The following subjects are studied by all boys in the Third Form: English (combined Literature and Language course) Mathematics Biology Chemistry Physics Geography History Theology Computing Two or three Modern Foreign Languages (French, German, Spanish, and English as a Second Language)* One creative subject (from Art, Design and Technology, Drama and Music) Either Classics or a second creative subject (Classics consists of Latin, Ancient Greek &/or Classical Civilisation depending on prior experience) Physical Education PSHEE *Tuition in other languages may also be available on request.

Academic Success We support all our boys in realising their full intellectual potential and in developing a genuine love of learning. Our academic results are extremely strong and reflect exceptional value added. Each year, for example, approximately half of our A levels are awarded with either an A or an A* grade. In a typical year, around a fifth of our Upper Sixth secure straight A* and A grades.

It is a reflection on the importance we place upon academic success that boys at Sherborne achieve among the best value added scores in the country. At the same time, our boys regularly win gold awards and distinctions in Olympiads and other national and international academic competitions. As a consequence of all these academic achievements, the vast majority of boys secure places at their first choice university with popular destinations including Oxbridge, Durham, UCL, Bristol and Imperial.

What makes this level of academic success all the more impressive is that our boys achieve so many other things during their time at Sherborne, ranging from distinctions in LTCL and ATCL music diplomas to representative honours across a wide range of sports.

General Information

Boarding Some 90% of our pupils are boarders and to provide the best boarding experience means that the Houses are just as full and busy at weekends as they are during the School week. Boarding at Sherborne is at the centre of the enriching education that we provide.

Saturday morning begins with lessons, usually followed by a whole School Lecture. This is delivered by someone outside the School – we’ve had explorers, mountaineers, athletes, academics and business people.

Saturday afternoons are given over to the School’s extensive sports programme, in which every boy has a chance to participate, before they gather in houses for Assembly in the evening. Supper is followed by a programme of social activities, often together with Sherborne Girls.

On Sunday mornings, breakfast is followed by quiet time in Houses, during which boys catch up with work and reading. Various trips take place on Sundays, including outdoor activities like kayaking and climbing, and visits to football matches or to the cinema.

Inter-house competitions are regularly scheduled for Sunday afternoons as well as during the week, in activities as diverse as debating, football and singing. Most weeks, the whole School comes together on Sunday evening for a service in the Abbey.

Separate arrangements apply to day boys although they are very much still expected to contribute fully in the broader life of the School.

Pastoral Care Housemasters, House staff, and in particular Matrons, have a key role in providing much of the care which you would give at home.

The 24-7 Health Centre provides a high quality medical service for all boys during term; with qualified nurses as well as a Doctor’s surgery each morning from Monday to Saturday, and a School Counsellor.

Guardians All boys of any nationality whose home address is not in this country, or whose parents are away from home frequently or for a long period of time, must have an appointed Guardian in the United Kingdom who lives within a reasonable travelling distance of the school. This Guardian must be a responsible adult who is over 25 years old and is able to speak and write English fluently. The Guardian must have authority to take decisions on behalf of the parent should the need arise.

Travel Arrangements For Exeats and at half term, transport is available to certain destinations and South West trains run an additional service for us to London.

Transport is also available from Sherborne to Bath, Nailsworth and Burley (Picket Post) if there are sufficient numbers. In addition, arrangements can be made to Bournemouth, Bristol, Exeter, Gatwick, Heathrow, London City and Southampton airports, central London and other areas on request.

Fees

Enquiries and visits

Registration Fee A fee is payable by all parents wishing to register their son for entry to the School. The fee is nonrefundable.

Deposit An acceptance deposit is payable on acceptance of a place. For non UK resident parents, on acceptance of a place, an overseas deposit will be required.

Termly Fees 2020/21 Boarding £12,925.00 Day

The termly fee includes the provision of necessary educational materials.

Educational and Personal Extras Individual music tuition and instrument hire is charged as an extra along with private tuition in other areas of the School. Some of the clubs and societies have a subscription and a charge is also made for participation in some outings and expeditions. Public examination fees are also charged as supplemental to the fees.

All fees are subject to an annual review by the Governors and any changes will apply from the first day of the academic year.

Sibling Fee Discount Scheme A 10% sibling discount is offered when you have three children at Sherborne Schools (comprising Sherborne School and Sherborne Girls). The discount applies to the third child and continues for the time they are at the School, provided that the two older children have completed their full time education at one of the Schools - this usually means completing their Sixth Form education.

You will receive this in addition to the value of any Scholarship which is awarded.

The fourth and subsequent children will receive a 15% discount.

A sibling discount also applies where families have a third child at Sherborne Prep School but this only applies for the duration the child is at Sherborne Prep. If the third child then joins Sherborne School or Sherborne Girls, he or she will have the sibling discount and not the oldest child who had previously received it.

Fees in Advance Scheme The School offers a Fees in Advance scheme.

Location

Sherborne School is situated in the centre of Sherborne, Dorset, within walking distance of the mainline train station between Exeter and London Waterloo. It is approximately two hours and twenty minutes from London by road or rail.

High-speed trains from Paris and Brussels to London, and international flights from New York to Bristol, provide easy global connections.

Other nearby airports include Southampton, Bournemouth and Exeter.
