James Humbert Craig was born in Belfast in 1878. He was largely self-taught, apart from an aborted term at the Belfast School of Art. He was predominately a landscape painter, drawn, like other northern artists, such as Frank McKelvey, to the seductive ruggedness of Donegal and Connemara as well as his beloved Glens of Antrim, where in 1919, he purchased a cottage in Cushenden. It was later named Rockport cottage, which he also used as a studio. He was particularly active during the interwar years. His mother was Swiss, from an artistic family, and Craig travelled and painted in Europe, including the South of France. There is in his work something reminiscent of the style of the French Barbizon group of painters; especially their handling of light and tonal contrasts in painting landscapes.
It may be noted that art historian Brian Kennedy detected an influence from the French artist Corot in Craig’s later
works. In France, the development of industrialisation prompted more and more people to escape to the countryside as depicted by the Impressionists. In a Northern temperate climate, as in Ireland, the sky, and in turn, the land, is forever changing and often restless. Craig’s handling of tone and application of fragmented brush strokes registers this shifting landscape. John Hewitt has noted, in the artist’s works ‘…the swift notation of the insistent effect, the momentary flicker, ‘the flash of light, the passing shadow.’ While his paintings were plotted and pieced by brush, he, at times, applied paint by palette knife for richness of texture.
The composition in ‘Near Rosbeg, Co.Donegal’ is panoramic in form and structured by a series of parallel sections. Running midway across the canvas is a slate blue/grey escarpment. Light breaking through from the clouds above, articulates the ‘promontory and recess’

disposition of this mountain feature. The light from the warm clouds, in pinks and creams, further defines the flat foreground landscape, punctuated pleasingly by turf stacks and cows grazing. A dirt path runs from the lower left corner of the canvas to cottages at the centre of the painting. As such the scene would have been observed en plein air, contributing to its freshness and mood. Paul Henry’s work, although more experimental, had an impact on Craig and others, like Frank McKelvey, not least in the depiction of the West of Ireland as a rich subject but stylistically to explore the playout of sky to land, as in this example. While this painting is light, fresh and well defined, other paintings by Craig can be more romantic, with darker colours, registering a drama unfolding between shifting clouds and transitions of light and weather conditions.
Craig died in 1944, and memorial exhibitions were held in Derry, Belfast and Dublin. He was an important influence on younger Irish artists such as Maurice Wilks, and credited with being a father figure in the founding of an informal school of Irish Landscape Painting. James Humbert Craig’s work was included in an important exhibition of Irish Art in Brussels in 1930. He was a member of The Royal Hibernian Academy, and The Royal Ulster Academy. His paintings are represented in many private and public collections, including The National Gallery, Dublin, The Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, The Armagh County Museum and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

102 WILLIAM PERCY FRENCH (1854 - 1920)
A classic view by William Percy French, this watercolour depicts a rain-soaked landscape in the Irish midlands, and demonstrates the delicacy of his approach to painting, which was largely based on observed detail; the waning daylight, rainclouds sweeping over the distant mountains, and a lone tree by the water’s edge. The parts of the bog where the peat has been cut away have filled with water, reflecting the tree and sky. French painted with a light touch, and a responsiveness to climatic conditions, often working ‘en plein air’. Not long after this work was painted, he embarked on a gruelling music-hall tour of Ireland and Britain, to raise money for the Red Cross, and also performed for troops in France.
Born into a large family at Cloonyquin House in Co. Roscommon in 1854, Percy French was educated in England before going to Foyle College in Derry. While a student at Trinity College Dublin in the early 1870s, he wrote his first successful song, Abdul Abulbul Amir, which went on to become a music-hall hit. He also painted in watercolours, and while at college won several prizes for his art. Graduating from Trinity College he obtained work as an apprentice engineer on the Midland Great
Western Railway, then worked for the Board of Works in Cavan. During this time, he persevered with his painting, exhibiting his work at the RHA and with the Watercolour Society of Ireland. In the late 1880s, he turned his hand to journalism and became editor of the weekly The Jarvey A keen cyclist, French went on trips into the countryside, sketching as he travelled. Up to 1900, he lived at Mespil Road in Dublin, but that year he moved with his wife and family to St. John’s Wood in London. He made a living as an entertainer and performer, touring Ireland, England and further afield. Although nowadays best-remembered for his songs, such as Phil the Fluther’s Ball and Slattery’s Mounted Foot, French remained throughout his life a dedicated artist, rarely travelling without his watercolour sketch pad. He specialised in views of the Irish midlands and the West of Ireland, often depicting—as in this work— rivers and lakes, with trees and mountains in the distance, and a setting sun. There is a delicate Romantic quality to French’s art, and his watercolours remain popular to this day.

JOHN CONSTABLE RA (EAST BERGHOLT 1776 - 1837 HAMPSTEAD)
Depicting a cottage set within a dense woodland and overshadowed by trees in full leaf, this oil sketch was likely done out of doors, as evidenced by a pinhole at the top centre of the sheet of paper, used by the artist to secure the paper to a drawing board. The foreground, which includes a stretch of river, is animated by bands of light and shade, while the fence around the cottage is picked out with neat brushstrokes. The vertical trunks of two trees on the right contrast with gently sloping ground on the left. Only the gable wall of the cottage is visible, with smoke rising from the chimney. A further important part of the content is his quite typical, deft inclusion of a touch of red, visible on the roof of the cottage, acting as a ploy to pull the composition together and give it a focal point. It is a peaceful scene, with white cumulus clouds massed in the sky, reflecting Constable’s interest in observing natural forms, such as water, clouds and trees, and recording specific weather conditions.
In the distance, between the trees, can be seen a hillside, and below that, there are more cottages, with just their red roofs visible. Although a small sketch, the composition is a strong ‘Z’, formed by the horizontal band in the foreground and the diagonal of sky between the trees. The scene is most likely Dedham Vale, the subject of many of Constable’s paintings and sketches, such as The Mill Stream in the Tate collection, and his ink sketch Trees and a stretch of water on the River Stour, in the V & A.
The cottage depicted may well be Willy Lott’s cottage on the banks of the Stour, near Flatford Mill. Constable’s nickname for The Haywain was ‘old Billy Lott’s House’ and the building appears in many of the artist’s works; he painted it both from life and from memory. The house held a special appeal, as the home of a tenant farmer who lived there for eighty years and never travelled far from Flatford, so epitomising for Constable the sense of continuity he valued in rural life. The visual device of highlighting a cottage gable against a darker woodland background was often used by the artist, as in his 1819 The White Horse, in the Frick Collection.
Although nowadays one of Britain’s best-known artists, Constable sold relatively few paintings during his lifetime. The majority of his works are in public collections such as the V & A, Ashmolean, British Museum, Royal Academy, Yale and Tate Gallery, and relatively few of his paintings appear on the open market. In the 1970s, along with Leslie Parris, the art historian Conal Shields was responsible for bringing Constable back to the attention of a wide public, curating several exhibitions at the Tate, from 1976 through to the 1990s. Shields’ most recent contribution to Constable studies is his catalogue of the 2020 exhibition at the Teylers Museum in the Netherlands.

Evie Hone’s first sketches after Irish sixteenth century stone tomb carvings date from sometime in the late 1930s but she had long been interested in them. This was sparked by the comparable study of medieval sculpture in France by art historians such as Emile Mâle, Henri Focillon as well as her principal teacher the French Cubist painter and writer Albert Gleizes. She searched out and studied surviving examples of sculpture in churches and graveyards as well as in monastic sites all over the country. She also sketched from high crosses, penal crucifixes and illuminated manuscripts. This drawing shows a Crucifixion from the front of the tomb of John Grace at St. Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny, dating from c.1552. It shows Our Lady and St. John either side of the crucified Christ and was a common image in medieval devotional art. Hone had relatives in Kilkenny and spent a great deal of time there. She sketched widely in St. Canice’s Cathedral and many of these drawings may have originally been contained within one sketchbook which, like most of her sketchbooks, has long since been broken up and dispersed.
Other surviving drawings from this period record visits to Jerpoint Abbey and Kells Priory just south of Kilkenny town. Although some of her best known drawings after Irish medieval sculpture, such as those in Cormac’s Chapel Cashel, Co. Tipperary and St. Brigid’s Cathedral in Kildare, formed the basis of important stained glass panels (such as the Crucifixion panel in the Tate), those made in Kilkenny are believed to be amongst her earliest recordings of Irish tomb carvings and other aspects of medieval sculpture which were then still relatively little known. These drawings were widely exhibited and admired. They were also sought after by collectors and patrons, including John Hunt, the well-known antiquarian. As well as expressions of Hone’s own particular version of “medieval modernism” they also offer a record of what was a largely neglected aspect of Irish art history.

The expression of the youthful August Mask is stoic and quite a bit determined. A plethora of symmetrically balanced leaves issue from the top of the work to the bottom. The first, a canopy of Twayblade orchid leaves overhang the criss-crossed leaves of the Marsh orchid and two rosettes of Spear thistle on either side of the head. Folklore of both ancient Ireland and Greece tell of mixing the roots of orchids with goat’s milk to make love potions. The thistle, James II choice of emblem for Scotland was picked because of its defensive symbolism...’Nemo me impune lacessit’, ‘Nobody touches me with impunity’. Below the thistles, leaves of the Doves tail crane bill, complete with their flowers frame the lower arc of the sculpture.
Acrobatically flying through the cascade of leaves, four blue tits fly harmoniously reflecting each other at the upper and lower sections of the sculpture. The tails of the upper birds graze flowers of the Devils Bit, named from the fact that its roots look truncated, as if bitten off, legend has it, by the Devil.
A series of plants curve inwards with the youth’s face from the chin up. Leaves of the much maligned Ragwort and the pointed buds of Goat’s Beard, whose flowers close up at noon. Seedbuds of Plaintan follow the cheekbones and lastly Patrick’s emblem, used to explain the essence of the Holy Trinity to king Aengus, the clover subtly hangs down from the forehead.

Charles Lamb was born in Portadown in N. Ireland in 1893. He studied life drawing at evening classes at Belfast College of Art and in 1917 he became a full time student at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin. Like Henry, Keating and other artists, he had a deep affinity with the West of Ireland, especially the area around Carraroe, Connemara. He settled there in 1935.
Paul Henry, in many respects, opened up the west of Ireland as a subject for engagement by artists, including northern artists like James Humbert Craig et al. It was believed that Irish national identity was somehow invested in its rugged terrain, as a cultural repository, removed from industrialisation. There was also the notion that there was dignity in land-related work and self-sufficiency. Precedents in this regard include Van Gogh and Millet.
In ‘Cottages by the Lake, Connemara’ by Lamb, the sky, overcast in a watery milky grey, is reflected in the water. In the mid-distance some buildings line the crest of a small brown / grey hill. The land colours then shift to greens and browns, with more distinct white-washed buildings, screened by a dominant tree and bushes. In the lower foreground two small promontories stretch out into the water. In the immediate foreground the rippled water laps the embankment. Lamb is particularly good at depicting Irish weather conditions and the inscape of the earth.
It recalls a few lines from Seamus Heaney’s poem ‘Banks of a Canal’ related to a painting in The National Gallery, Dublin, by the French artist Gustave Caillebotte
‘The sky not truly bright or overcast: I know that clay, the damp and dirt of it, The coolth along the bank, the grassy zest of verge,…’
Lamb has painted a number of works, with ‘cottages’ in the title, at different times of the day or evening where light has a defining role. This painting has the pallor and the chill of perhaps early morning. The artist excels at structuring the dynamics of a scene,allowing light to emphasise or dissipate form.
Brian Kennedy has noted that ‘Henry…discovered the west of Ireland in 1910 and almost single-handedly forged a school of Irish painting based on landscape there which in the hands of Lamb, Craig and McKelvey dominated the period between the wars’. What drew Lamb to work in Connemara was the rural and colourful lifestyle of the people. It also drew him to live and work in Brittany for a time during the 1920s and in the Aran Islands, where he would have known artists Sean Keating, Elizabeth Rivers and Maurice MacGonigal.
His work is in many private and public collections. He exhibited in London, Boston and New York and he regularly contributed to the RUA and RHA exhibitions, where he became a member in 1930 and 1938 respectively. In 1947, a solo show was arranged at CEMA, Belfast, and a retrospective of his work was held in 1969 at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. His work is in many private and public collections, including in the National Gallery of Ireland, The Hugh Lane Gallery, Armagh County Museum and The Ulster Museum.

Several subjects compete for attention in this lively watercolour by Pauline Bewick. First is the eye-catching traditional country dresser, decked out with colourful plates and mugs. Then, a large house plant in the foreground tries to steal the scene. All the time, sitting quietly at the table and eating her breakfast is Lisa, the real subject of this portrait and still life combined. Other details are not slow to vie for attention, including a cockerel outside the kitchen door. As with portraits by the nineteenth century French naif painter ‘Le Douanier Rousseau’ the overall effect is timeless and life-affirming.
Born in 1935 in Newcastle, England, Pauline Bewick was raised on a smallholding in Co. Kerry. Her early life was artistic and somewhat Bohemian, and she received constant encouragement from her mother to think for herself and be independent. From an early age, Bewick worked as an artist. After attending the progressive Summerhill school in England, she returned to Ireland, where she enrolled as a student at the National College of Art. Her artistic output was always prodigious, and she worked with speed and skill, recording in ink and watercolours her life and surroundings, and the people she was close to. She was almost always a figurative artist,
drawing and painting in a clear linear style with gusto and confidence. One of her commissions was to produce drawings and advertising material for the department store Brown Thomas. A documentary film about Bewick’s life was made in 1985 by David Shaw Smith, the same year a book by James White, Painting a Life, was published. The following year a retrospective exhibition at the Guinness Hop Store in Dublin included over one thousand of her works, including drawings she had made in childhood. In the late 1980s Bewick moved to Polynesia with her two daughters Poppy and Holly, and lived there for several years, a sojourn captured in a series of works called South Seas. From the mid 1950s onwards, she exhibited at the RHA, and in 1996 showed a series of works titled Yellow Man. As well as working in watercolour on paper, Bewick produced tapestry designs, ceramics, stained glass and also worked in music and theatre. A member of the RHA, she was also elected to Aosdána. In 1963, Bewick married Patrick Melia, an eminent psychiatrist and they were together for many years. Their daughter Poppy Melia, born in 1966, is also an artist.

When you see an Irish sculpture of a famine ship, you immediately think of the work of John Behan. Just like his fellow sculptors, Edward Delaney and Rowan Gillespie, John Behan has been crafting memories of the Irish Famine from the mid - 1990s and still he creates these moving, emotional and historically rooted masterpieces today. This piece, an ‘Atlantic Famine Ship’ from 2021, is connected through the lyrical movement of the figures attached, while the sails look as if they are blown forward by the wind, just as if the ship was sailing on a breezy day. The ship’s sails are rough and depicted finely, as the appearance of gaps or tears is reminiscent of the years we lost out on and the years that tore Ireland apart between 1845 and 1852. There is significant depth in the body of the ship as the masts are supported by the base, while the overall structure in its entirety echoes the painful recollections of the coffin ships that travelled from Ireland to America, Britain, Canada, and other countries.
Born in Sheriff Street, Dublin, in 1938, John Behan studied at the National College of Art and Design from 1956 to 1960, and started sculpting in the late 1950s, while continuing to improve his studies, attending Ealing Art College, London for a year between 1960 and 1961, and Oslo’s Royal Academy School later. Around the same time, he completed a metalwork apprenticeship at the J&C McLoughlin Ironworks, starting at the age of 15 in 1960. In 1967, he helped establish the Dublin Art Foundry and the Project Arts Centre in Dublin, while three years later, he received his first big commission, where he created the Cuchulainn relief panels for the Gresham Hotel, Dublin. His most famous work would be the National Famine Memorial in Murrisk Millennium Peace Park at the foot of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo. His retrospective was held in association with the RHA and the Galway Arts Centre between 1994 and 1995, which also toured to the Sligo Art Gallery. He has exhibited a number of times, including at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, the Oireachtas, and the RHA, which he became an elected member of in 1989. He was also made a member of Aosdana in 1978. He is represented by a number of galleries across Ireland, including Solomon Fine Art, The Kenny Gallery and Kilcock Art Gallery, and he currently lives near Galway City.

Louis le Brocquy (1916 - 2012) is widely regarded as one of the most important artists in Ireland to emerge during the twentieth century. His work is fundamental to any representative collection of Irish art, and features in significant institutional and national collections in Ireland as well as many private and public collections internationally. Examples of his work have featured in major travelling exhibitions of Irish art abroad. He was selected to represent Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1956 where he was awarded the prestigious Premio Acquisito Internationale for his controversial painting A Family (1951); this iconic work is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
Among the primary subjects addressed by Louis le Brocquy are his portrait heads of distinctive creative individuals, most of whom he had met or knew personally. The series followed on from the ‘Ancestral Head’ images that emerged from his visit to the anthropological museum, the Musée de l’Homme, in Paris in 1964. Inspired by the ritualistic heads he witnessed there, he was drawn to the idea of the generational links that reflect a connection from the past to the present. This series of works are not portraits as such, as they do not depict recognisable individuals. However, during the following years, the portrait heads of creative individuals developed and included groundbreaking exponents of cultural expression, like WB Yeats, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett. Rather than producing a single, definitive representation of a subject, the artist preferred to create multiple images of each, on the basis that complex and multi-faceted individuals could not be conveyed adequately in a single portrayal. Le Brocquy’s portraits were generally painted in oils or in watercolour, and he is celebrated for his extensive productive explorations in these media.
Samuel Beckett (1906–89), the Nobel prize-winning writer, and artist Louis le Brocquy, knew each other. They collaborated on several projects, not least Beckett’s last published prose work, Stirrings Still. A limited edition features illustrations by Louis le Brocquy, with a stylised image of the writer displayed on the cover. While Beckett, born in 1906, was ten years older than le
Brocquy, there were notable parallels in their respective lives and creative histories. Each of them had studied for a time at Trinity College Dublin, each had lived in France for many years, each was elected to Aosdána (founded in 1981 by the Arts Council of Ireland as a kind of academy of Irish artists), and each achieved the rare distinction of Saoí (‘wise one’) – an honour granted to only seven, at a time, of Aosdána members.
In 1989, an exhibition was held at the Picasso Museum in Antibes, south of France, of selected portrait paintings by Louis le Brocquy. The exhibition featured portraits in oils and watercolours, and included several images of Samuel Beckett who died in December of that year. While the current watercolour painting may not have been included in that show, it is nonetheless representative of the artist’s approach at that time. A broadcast interview, in French, with le Brocquy earlier that year shows the artist in his studio with a number of photographic images pinned to the walls, several of which were of Beckett. Commenting on his approach to painting portraits, the artist observed how, despite being famous, his subjects were also vulnerable and poignant. In the remarkable watercolour paintings, this sensitivity is conveyed through the delicacy of the medium, its translucence, and the way veils of thin colour are built to suggest the recognisable contours of the face. The frontality of the image suggests both confidence and sensitivity; it suggests consuming inner processes and the dynamics of creativity. The artist has described the head as “the mysterious box which contains the spirit: the outer reality of the invisible interior world of consciousness.” Most relevant to the current analysis, however, is the broadcast interview with Louis le Brocquy in 1989, where he commented on the particular relevance of the eyes as perhaps the main gateway to the spirit “ … that lurks behind the exterior view of the face.”

DAVID HOCKNEY RA (B. 1937)
Seated in Hockney’s Hollywood Hills studio, Ann Upton, the artist’s longtime friend and model, sits quietly looking at the artist capturing the moment and resting her arm on a table and resting the other on her thigh. The first thing that catches the eye is her decorative dress, but there is much more happening in this work, involving perspective and the mastery of printmaking. Throughout his career, David Hockney has challenged the primary representation of perspective, making the viewer question how space and time is viewed. His signature cubist, multi-point perspective, or in this case, a dual or reverse viewpoint, is used to fan out the floor and walls and depict the vanishing points as expanding when coming towards Ann and wrapping around her, while making the viewer feel that they are in the room with her, and adding the perception of two hallways branching off into the distance, which ultimately add depth.
The significance of using etching and aquatint in his printmaking processes allows him to make these experiments of perspective, while the sophisticated use of intaglio allows him to convey the fine lines and shading, treating the metal plates like pages in a visual diary. Hockney has used multiple mediums in his work and believes that ‘mediums can turn you on, they can excite you; they always let you do something in a different way’ and in this case, every little detail, from the obscured chair to the static detail in Ann’s hair does just that.
David Hockney is one of the most significant figures in the pop art movement. Born in Bradford, he attended the
Bradford School of Art to begin formal painting studies in 1953, spending four years there before moving to London, where he started studying and exhibiting at the Royal College of Art, where he started to establish himself as a prominent figure in the pop art movement. However, it was his move to Los Angeles in 1964, that cemented his stance as a leading pop artist. It was in California, where he flourished with ‘The Pool Series’, which he completed between 1964 and 1967, as he was fascinated by LA’s backyard swimming pools. From then on, multiple works such as ‘The Splash’, from 1966, upscaled his popularity and recognition, but without a doubt, his most famous work was from 1972, which was ‘Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)’, which was inspired by his travels to Le Nid du Duc, a villa near Saint-Tropez, which was owned by film director Tony Richardson, and it was sold by Christie’s in New York in 2018 for $90.3 Million. Until May 2019, it held the record for the most expensive artwork sold at auction by a living artist.
David Hockney’s work has been exhibited numerous times at Tate Britain, where he also had his retrospective in 2017 - 2018, which also travelled to the Met Museum in New York. He has also exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, the National Portrait Gallery, London, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and last year, he had his largest ever retrospective at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, where he exhibited over 400 works spanning seven decades. As well as this, his work is in many private collections, such as Sir Elton John, Brad Pitt, and Bernard Arnault.

258 JACQUES FRANÇOIS CARABAIN (1834 - 1933)
Although Bern in Switzerland is famed for its public fountains, some of which date back to the sixteenth century and depict knights, pipers and biblical figures, the tradition of erecting such fountains with statues extends across Europe. In this painting, Jacques François Joseph Carabain captures the activity around a fountain in an historic town square, with people shopping at a market stall and horses drinking from a trough. Previously identified as a scene in the Swiss city, Carabain’s painting in fact is of Bern-Kastel (Bernkastel) on the Moselle river in the Rhineland-Palatinate. The view depicts the old houses on Marktplatz, looking down MarktStrasse towards the river. At one corner of the Market Place is a fountain, surmounted by a statue of St. Michael, patron saint of Bernkastel, carrying sword and scales, with a dragon beneath his feet. The original statue, which dated from the early seventeenth century, was destroyed in an Allied air raid in February 1945, and later replaced by a copy by a local artist, Paul Simon. Combined with the restoration of the medieval and Renaissance half-timbered buildings ofMarktplatz, this makes Carabain’s painting significant, not only for its artistic quality, but also as a record of Bernkastel before WWII. Carabain painted several such RomanticRealist views of historic buildings in the town, underlining its importance during a time when it attracted many artists, including JMW Turner, William Callow and Clarkson Stanfield.
Born in Amsterdam in 1834, Jacques François Joseph Carabain, also known in the Netherlands as Jacob Frans Jozef Carabain, was a Dutch-Belgian artist, highly regarded for his Romantic Realist city scenes. Trained at the Amsterdam Art Academy, his teachers included Jacobus Schoemaker Doyerand Valentijn Bing. In 1856 he left Amsterdam, to travel and paint in Europe, and lived in Brussels for a short time, before settling in nearby Schaerbeek. Among the scenes he painted are the Porta Santa Susanna in Perugia, Desenzano on Lake Garda, and Via Mazzanti in Verona In 1880 he became a Belgian citizen and five years later travelled to New Zealand and Australia, where he exhibited at the Victoria Academy of Arts. He returned to Europe in 1889, and not long afterwards began to specialising in painting scenes of old Brussels. His last exhibition was held in 1907. In addition to his highly detailed rendering of architecture, Carabain’s paintings also include people going about their daily life. His paintings remain popular today, as witnessed by an exhibition of his watercolours of the old city held in Brussels in 2011.

Kenneth Webb, often referred to as a British artist, was born in London in 1927. He later moved to Gloucestershire where he studied at The Lydney School of Art. In 1945, he received a scholarship to The Slade School in London. However national service intervened. After his national service in 1948, he decided to enrol at the Gloucestershire College of Art, studying painting, pottery and graphics. From 1953 - 60 he held the post of Head of Painting at, what is now called, The Belfast School of Art. Although exhibiting in Ireland and in England, he developed his career mostly in Ireland, painting colourful florid landscapes (at times almost in Day-Glo hues) in the west of Ireland, in a quasi-impressionist style.
He also painted figurative works and many flower studies (he had a wild Flower garden and studio in Ballinaboy, Connemara). Paintings of poppies were frequent. Occasionally, he painted abstract and semi-abstract works. There is a painting of sweet peas where the flowerheads are blocked-in, as a variety of coloured squares,and also a ‘pointillist’ style painting ‘Land of Poppies’. ‘Waterlily Symphony III’, painted in oils, to some extent falls into this latter category. Although naturalistic, It is a stylised work, rendering a well conceived motif, in a range of modulated and unmodulated colours, The mottled waterlily leaves range in colour from light greens/yellows to yellow/orange/red. The background of dark, dense water serves to supercharge their intensity. Indeed, the work could be seen as designed for repeat pattern textile printing. Graphically, It does engender a harmonious structure justifying the musical reference. Linear plant elements contribute further to the compositional orchestration. His study of graphic design at Gloucestershire School of Art may have nourished this work.
Early in his career he showed with the Magee Gallery in Belfast and later in his career, with The Kenny Bookshop and Art Gallery in Galway. He first exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1947. He was included in the ‘Some of the Moderns’ exhibition, 1988, at The Belgravia Gallery, London. During his time teaching in Belfast, he had a one-person show at the Arts Council Gallery in the city. In 2018, an exhibition of his work was held at The Royal Dublin Society. Some 170 of his paintings from between 1955 and 2018 were exhibited. He painted the altarpiece for Bangor Abbey and received commissions from British Steel and The Post Office. The Crawford Art (online collection) has samples of his work. An artist who continues to impress, Honora O’Neill depicts the rugged beauty of the Great Blasket Island looking towards the Atlantic Ocean. She uses pale greys to contrast with the warm oranges, immediately catching the viewer’s eye. In Between the ruins, the brushstrokes form a path leading the viewer’s eye to the beach, where the cliffs add depth and the soft tone of the sand faces the oncoming tide, creating drama. The edge of the walls reflect shadow against the smooth green fields, where the soft, curving, brushstrokes leads down to the edge of the path. The Sea turns from dark blue to a lighter shade as the sun appears to burst through the clouds and smoothen the texture on the canvas. Among the ruins, two small cottages look towards Beginish (Beiginis), a low-lying small Island, where the edge appears from the right of the canvas, where its edge submerges into the sea.
Honora O’Neill is a contemporary artist whose work is inspired by the rugged beauty of West Kerry, where she lives. Based on the Dingle Peninsula, O’Neill’s paintings capture the movement, texture, and raw emotion of the land and sea. In addition to her painting practice, O’Neill has owned and operated her own gallery in Dingle since 2008, where she showcases her work. O’Neill’s paintings are held in private and public collections in Ireland and internationally, and her work consistently sells and is in great demand at auction, since being introduced in 2025.

ERSKINE NICOL RSA ARA (1825 - 1904)
One of Erskine Nicol’s finest paintings, An Ejected Family, dated 1853, is now in the National Gallery of Ireland. It depicts a family on the road, having been forced by bailiffs to leave their home. Dark clouds gather over a scene that includes young children, a man and a woman, and an old man. In the background is a cottage, their former home. Painted four years later, the present work, An Evicted Family, follows the fortunes of a similar group forced to take to the road, with no shelter from the elements. In both paintings, while Nicol depicts a tragic event, there is also an emphasis on the resilience of those who are suffering misfortune. The evicted family consists of a man and woman, and their three young children. Wearing a tall hat and buttoned-up coat, the man stands, hands in pocket, looking forward with a steady gaze. Behind, the woman, burdened and carrying two young children, looks up fearfully at the gathering clouds. A child hangs on to the father’s coat, crying. There is little or no caricature in this image, which emphasises the parents’ determination to carry on and not be defeated, no matter how steep the odds are stacked against them.
While Erskine Nicol is noted for his use of authentic detail in his paintings, including clothing, country furniture and buildings, he also adhered to the conventions of Dutch seventeenth-century ‘kermesse’ and tavern scenes, where revellers and poor alike are mocked. Many of Nicol’s genre paintings that depict life in rural Ireland are charming; some are caricatures or satirical, while others attempt to invest humour into scenes of poverty. He has often been criticised for his depictions of the poor in Ireland, but without acknowledgement of the fact that he was working within that long-established northern European tradition of ‘sittenbild’. In fact, Nicol was one of the few artists to depict realistic scenes of Irish rural life
in the years after the Great Famine, including emigration and eviction. The success of The Evicted Family is evidenced by the fact that a version of it was painted by a contemporary of Nicol’s, William Brocas, who also painted aspects of Irish life and, on one occasion at least, an emigration scene. Such scenes were not limited to Ireland: Erskine Nicol’s son John Watson Nicol, born in Edinburgh in 1856, would go on to depict equally harrowing scenes in the Scottish Highlands, as the ‘clearances’ progressed through the nineteenth century.
Born in 1825 in Leith, Scotland, Erskine Nicol was initially apprenticed to a house painter, before studying art at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh, where his teachers included Thomas Duncan and William Allen. For a short time, he was employed as a drawing master at Leith Academy. Moving to Dublin in 1845, he worked for four years as a teacher with the Department of Science and Art, and also painted portraits. In 1850, he returned to Edinburgh, and the following year was elected an associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy. However, following the example of his compatriot David Wilkie, who had travelled in Ireland in the 1830s, Nicol continued to make painting trips to Ireland, where he built a studio on Clonave Island, on Lough Derravaragh, in Co. Westmeath. The sketches he made in Ireland were then worked up into finished paintings on his return to Scotland. In 1862 Nicol moved to London and six years later was made an Associate of the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the RHA. (B) SHEPPARD’S DO NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE AUTHENTICITY, ATTRIBUTION, GENUINENESS, ORIGIN, AUTHORSHIP, DATE, AGE, PERIOD, CONDITION OR QUALITY OF ANY LOT, UNLESS THEY HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED IN WRITING BY THE VENDOR SO TO CERTIFY, AND IN SUCH CASE THE AUCTIONEERS DO SO AS AGENTS OF THE VENDOR ARE NOT THEMSELVES RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH CLAIMS.

3. THE AUCTION:
(A) THE AUCTIONEER HAS ABSOLUTE DISCRETION TO DIVIDE ANY LOT, TO COMBINE ANY TWO OR MORE LOTS OR TO WITHDRAW ANY LOT OR LOTS FROM THE SALE, TO REFUSE BIDS, REGULAR BIDDING OR CANCEL THE SALE WITHOUT IN ANY CASE GIVING ANY REASON OR WITHOUT PREVIOUS NOTICE. HE MAY BID ON BEHALF OF THE VENDOR FOR ALL GOODS WHICH ARE BEING OFFERED SUBJECT TO RESERVE OR AT THE AUCTIONEER’S DISCRETION.
(B) THE HIGHEST BIDDER SHALL BE THE BUYER EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF A DISPUTE. IF DURING THE AUCTION THE AUCTIONEER CONSIDERS THAT A DISPUTE HAS ARISEN, HE HAS ABSOLUTE DISCRETION TO SETTLE IT OR RE-OFFER THE LOT. THE AUCTIONEER MAY AT HIS SOLE DISCRETION DETERMINE THE ADVANCE OF BIDDING OR REFUSE A BID. 4. RECISSION: NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER FORMS OF THESE CONDITIONS. IF WITHIN FOURTEEN DAYS AFTER THE SALE SHEPPARD’S HAVE RECEIVED FROM THE BUYER OF ANY LOT NOTICE IN WRITING THAT IN HIS VIEW THE LOT IS A DELIBERATE FORGERY AND WITHIN TWENTY-ONE DAYS AFTER SUCH NOTIFICATION THE BUYER RETURNS THE SAME TO SHEPPARD’S IN THE SAME CONDITION AS AT THE TIME OF SALE AND BY PRODUCING EVIDENCE, THE BURDEN OF PROOF TO BE UPON THE BUYER, SATISFIES SHEPPARD’S THAT CONSIDERED IN THE LIGHT OF THE ENTRY IN THE CATALOGUE THE LOT IS A DELIBERATE FORGERY THEN THE SALE OF THE LOT WILL BE RESCINDED AND THE PURCHASE PRICE OF THE SAME REFUNDED.
5. DEFAULT: SHEPPARD’S DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFAULT BY EITHER THE BUYER OR THE VENDOR BECAUSE THEY ACT AS AGENTS FOR THE VENDOR ONLY AND THEREFORE DO NOT PAY OUT TO THE VENDOR UNTIL PAYMENT IS RECEIVED FROM THE BUYER. INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY TELEPHONE ARE ACCEPTED AT THE SENDER’S RISK AND MUST BE CONFIRMED IN WRITING FORTHWITH.
6. IN THE EVENT OF A SALE BY PRIVATE TREATY BOTH THE VENDOR AND THE BUYER AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE GENERAL AND ANY SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF SALE.
7. INSPECTION: EACH BUYER BY MAKING A BID FOR A LOT ACKNOWLEDGES THAT HE HAS SATISFIED HIMSELF FULLY BEFORE BIDDING BY INSPECTION OR OTHERWISE AS TO ALL THE SALE CONDITIONS THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF AND DESCRIPTION OF THE LOT INCLUDING BUT NOT RESTRICTED TO WHETHER THE LOT IS DAMAGED OR HAS BEEN REPAIRED OR RESTORED.
8. PROPERTY AND RISK LEGAL TITLE WILL NOT PASS TO THE BUYER UNTIL THE LOT(S) HAS BEEN PAID FOR IN FULL AND THE AUCTIONEERS SHALL HE ENTITLED TO A LIEN ON ANY LOT SOLD UNTIL THE PURCHASE PRICE (AS DEFINED IN 11 BELOW) IS PAID IN FULL BUT EACH LOT IS AT THE SOLE RISK OF THE BUYER FROM THE FALL OF THE HAMMER. EACH BUYER SHALL FORTHWITH GIVE HIS FULL NAMES AND PERMANENT ADDRESS AND IF CALLED UPON TO DO SO BY THE AUCTIONEER SHALL FORTHWITH PAY TO SHEPPARD’S SUCH PROPORTION OF THE PURCHASE PRICE AS THE AUCTIONEER MAY REQUIRE. IF THE BUYER FAILS TO DO SO, THE LOT MAY AT THE AUCTIONEER'S SOLE DISCRETION BE PUT UP AGAIN AND RE-SOLD.
9. EVERY BIDDER SHALL BE DEEMED TO ACT AS PRINCIPAL UNLESS THERE IS IN FORCE A WRITTEN ACKNOWLEDGMENT BY SHEPPARD’S THAT HE ACTS AS AGENT ON BEHALF OF A NAMED PRINCIPAL.
10. REMOVAL OF GOODS.
(A) NO PURCHASE SHALL BE CLAIMED UNTIL IT HAS BEEN PAID FOR AND THE SALE HAS BEEN CONCLUDED. ALL PURCHASES SHALL BE PAID FOR AND REMOVED AT THE BUYER’S RISK AND EXPENSE, FAILING WHICH THE AUCTIONEER SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF THE SAME ARE LOST, STOLEN, DAMAGED, OR DESTROYED AND ALL LOTS NOT SO REMOVED SHALL REMAIN AT THE RISK OF THE BUYER AND SUBJECT TO A MINIMUM WAREHOUSING CHARGE OF €5 PER ITEM PER DAY. IF THEY ARE NOT PAID FOR AND REMOVED WITHIN SEVEN DAYS OF THE SALE THE AUCTIONEER MAY RE-SELL THEM BY AUCTION OR PRIVATELY WITHOUT NOTICE TO THE BUYER. ANY LIABILITY WHICH THERE MAY BE ON THE PART OF THE AUCTIONEER IN RESPECT OF ANY LOSS SHALL BE RESTRICTED TO A MAXIMUM OF THE PRICE PAID BY THE BUYER OF THE LOT.
