FROM THE PRESIDENT

With the beginning of a new year, it is important that we take time to celebrate the accomplishments of our outstanding students, faculty, staff, and alumni from the 2021-2022 academic year. The dedication and generosity of our loyal alumni and friends are significant factors that keep the Shepherd community vibrant. Throughout the following pages, we are proud to share our continued progress—thanks to each of you.

This year, Shepherd will host its 150th Commencement and witness a graduating class cross the stage into a bright future, a feat that would not be possible without your support for empowering the next generation of leaders and model citizens. This commitment surpasses that of solely financial aid. Many of you contribute your time and talents working tirelessly to help the institution grow and thrive. Your spirit of giving is the backbone of Shepherd and the inspiration that will push us forward as we transform the future.

I am honored to work alongside so many passionate individuals who are committed to helping the University succeed. From the Hunter Carlos Willis Aviation Program to the Center of Excellence for Photobiomodulation (PBM), the campus has embraced many new programs and initiatives that will have a lasting impact over the next 150 years. As we continue to act as a catalyst for transformation, I thank each of you for believing and investing in the people and programs of Shepherd University—and look forward to perpetuating our legacy of excellence and innovation.

Women for Shepherd Tabler Farm Open House

Women for Shepherd University and the Shepherd University Foundation sponsored an open house at Shepherd University’s Agricultural Innovation Center at Tabler Farm as part of the University’s 150th celebration. Led by environmental science department faculty and farm managers Madison Hale ’21 and Daniel Speck ’20, the tour featured the farm’s aquaponics lab, the grow high tower, and educational raised beds. Following the tour, a cooking demo highlighted produce and herbs representative of items currently being grown at the farm. More than 70 alumni and friends came out to the farm to learn about all of the exciting things happening at the University’s agricultural classroom.

Scarborough Society gala sponsorship

The Scarborough Society of Shepherd University celebrated its 20th year of service by hosting an Alice in Wonderlandthemed gala. The annual gala is a summer social highlight, with all proceeds used to support and enhance library programs and facilities for the benefit of the Shepherd community. The event would not be possible without the generous support of its corporate sponsors. This year’s presenting sponsors included Jefferson Security Bank, United Bank Inc., and Wealthspire Advisors, LLC.

SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT: LOGAN HASSLER

Logan Hassler, a Doctor of Nursing Practice student from Hagerstown, Maryland, is a recipient of the Scott Beard and Alan Gibson Endowed Scholarship for Music and Nursing. This scholarship was created in 2021 to honor the memory of the late Dr. Scott Beard, Shepherd University’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. Efforts to establish the named fund were led by Alan Gibson, Dr. Beard’s life partner of 31 years, with contributions from alumni, friends, colleagues, and students.

“Shepherd University has provided me with countless opportunities to achieve my professional goals, not only as an

undergraduate student, but now as a graduate student,” said Logan. “The education that I have received has prepared me for the challenges faced as a front-line worker and will continue to guide me as I transition into the family nurse practitioner role. I did not anticipate receiving such an award, but I am extremely grateful that I was selected; this funding will help me and my family as I prioritize continuing my education in the field of nursing. Thank you for selecting me and for your generous contribution.”

If you would like to create your legacy with a private gift through the Shepherd University Foundation, please visit shepherduniversityfoundation.org or contact James Taylor, executive vice president, 304-876-5397, jtayl02@shepherd.edu or Sherri Janelle, executive director of development, 304-876-5043, sjanelle@shepherd.edu

Pictured above: Longtime Shepherd University Foundation supporter Dr. Erdem Ergin applauds at the Shepherd University Foundation 60th anniversary celebration. SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT: SONIA CHAVEZ

Sonia Chavez, a psychology major from El Paso, Texas who currently resides in Martinsburg, West Virginia, was the recipient of the Frada Fine Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2003 through the estate plans of Frada Fine, a graduate of Martinsburg High School and lifelong resident of the city. This award is designated in support of Martinsburg High School graduates.

“Thanks to the Frada Fine Scholarship, it turned my dreams into a reality, and it also made my family’s hard work, effort, and support pay off,” said Sonia. “This scholarship has helped my family and I in ways we will forever and always be grateful for. Thank you for making our dreams come true!”

2022 Courage to Inspire, Strength to Empower award

Alyssa Nazarok, a grad student from Northfield, New Jersey, was presented the “Courage to Inspire, Strength to Empower” award during the 2022 Women Investing in Shepherd (WISH) membership reception by Shepherd University President and WISH member Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix.

Alyssa, who serves as the Student Government Association Executive Board Parliamentarian and a leader on the Student Advisory Board of the Bonnie and Bill Stubblefield Institute for Civil Political Communications, was selected for her meaningful philanthropic work on- and off-campus.

“I am so honored to receive this award from a giving circle of such amazing women,” said Alyssa. “I hope to follow this group’s mission throughout my life and support communities in the ways I was able to learn they do.”

The “Courage to Inspire, Strength to Empower” award was created by WISH in 2021 to recognize outstanding female student leaders whose service and commitment to excellence benefit and inspire the members of the Shepherd Ram Family.

SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT: FRANCK AYMARD YAVO

Frank Aymard Yavo, an environmental studies major with a focus in geomatics from Martinsburg, West Virginia, was the recipient of the Ronald R. and Eileen L. Reeder Memorial Scholarship. Designated for student majoring in environmental studies, this scholarship was created by Eileen Reeder in memory of her husband, Ronald Reeder. The name of the fund was updated by the couple’s son, Ronald Reeder II, following Eileen’s passing to also honor his mother’s memory.

“First, I want to thank you for the chance you have given me to be the recipient of the Ronald Reeder Memorial Scholarship,” said Franck. “This scholarship is a breath of fresh air that you are offering me to pay my tuition fees. It is of great help as it saves me money for my daily needs. In addition, this scholarship allows me to focus more on my studies instead of jobs to support myself.”

Members of the President’s Club have been instrumental in providing the resources necessary to advance Shepherd’s priorities and raise the University’s profile through outstanding programs and academics.

President’s Club donors help ensure the future of Shepherd University through annual unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more. The uncommon commitment shown by alumni, friends, faculty, staff, executive leadership, and board members demonstrates the true passion and pride that so many feel for Shepherd.

Barrow Scholarship, an award designated for West Virginia residents majoring in education. Tanner also received the Holcombe English Scholarship. This award was established in memory of English teachers Dorothy “Dot” Knode Holcombe ’55 and her husband, Stanley Holcombe ’54 in support of education majors with a concentration in English.

“My scholarships have given me the ability to further enrich myself in my content area,” Tanner said. “I have been able to use my scholarship to buy the books I need and to avoid using student loans. The scholarships have made it possible for me to continue my college career.”
