Coincidence: “a surprising concurrence of events, perceived as meaningfully related, with no apparent casual connection” – The Art of Uncertainty, by David Spiegelhalter.
A few Shenley Boasters squash lads were chatting in the Sportsman’s Rest having a social beer when French Dave (FD) mentioned to me that his dad was involved with the development of Rugby Union. In fact he had overseen the international game which was an amazing piece of information for myself as a fervent ex-rugby player and Saints supporter. So does this story sound like a coincidence, not really but more at the end of this editorial.
On the same night in the bar two of the Darts team entered in very good spirits, smiling away, holding a vase, and I looked closer then realised it was a trophy. I later discovered they had won the league, winning 18 matches in a row which is a splendid achievement. The cup now proudly sits in pride of place behind the “jump” in the bar, well done lads!
There has been lots of repair work going on and I am very happy to say that the squash courts have been fully refurbished. The work took 6 days to finish plus drying time, sanding the floors, re-plastering and painting the walls which was a swift “pit-stop” regarding closure and business interruption. The Astro turf has also been out of action for a couple of months but the pitches are due to be patched up in January.
The golf simulators are progressing nicely and should be opened during this first quarter. I had a site inspection with the builders and architects in late December and it is satisfying to see the building taking shape, the facility finally has a name “Shenley Fairways” so watch out for the grand opening announcement.
Regretfully after an association of over 30 years with the Shenley Leisure Centre Dave Hall has finally decided to hang up his quiz night boots. Both Dave and Sid have been a constant in the Sportsman’s Rest and have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local charities and clubs. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave and Sid on behalf of the Trust and recognize the wonderful contribution they have made to our community! STOP PRESS; Dave has just said he wants to help out with the quizzes in 2025, you just can’t keep a good man down – Watch this space.
So again, speaking of coincidences. In November I was with my old friend Roger whom I used to play rugby with in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s for the Old Wandsworthians. We were both sitting in the stand at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados watching England take on the West Indies in the first T20’s match of a 5-game series which England easily won. I mentioned to Roger that a guy I play squash with in MK had said his dad had a very important job in rugby union. I told Roger FD’s dad’s name and Roger looked astonished as he checked his LinkedIn app, then he looked up and said you won’t believe this but he was our PE teacher at school. This was confirmed the next day by FD (who’s Welsh). Now that’s a coincidence!
Once again thank you all for your custom in 2024 and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!
Welcome to the first edition of 2025. Another year passes and what an eventful one it was.
We had a wonderful Summer of sport, a Family Fun August Bank Holiday event, a new pool team started which went very well, one of the darts teams did even better as mention previously. One of the main positives from last year was to get the Sports Hall and Gymnasium reopened. Seeing many of our clubs and courts back in action was a welcomed sight. As was restarting the Teen Fit sessions for 12-15 year old's for the first time since the pandemic, which there is more on in this issue. Having the squash courts completely refurbished at the end of November was the start of more projects expected in 2025. Plenty more on this will be coming over the coming months. We’ve led, on the front cover a brand new facility which is planned to open early this year, Shenley Fairways. A lot of excitement has been building as we have been teasing the progress. At the end of the last issue I was happy to say the centre was fully open as normal, however, we are currently waiting on repairs to both pitches, this should be completed in January. Buttons Preschool took over from Shenley Preschool and Dave Hall, after some consideration, we are happy to say is continuing with the Monday quizzes.
We held the first New Years Eve Party which was nice to see so many regular faces and some the we don’s see as often. Thank you to everyone who made it a great night to see in the new year.
