Alumni Weekend

Principal’s Welcome Welcome Home to Shenandoah!

Principal Short with Cole Gentry ‘21, third generation graduate

The beautiful springtime campus of Shenandoah Valley Academy provides the setting for a glorious and long-awaited reunion. Alumni Weekend is a brief and shining moment when the SVA Family is as complete as it will be this side of heaven. This year in particular is a precious time to strengthen bonds of friendship with beloved classmates and faculty who have made an important difference in our lives. And it is a special opportunity to meet the wonderful students who attend SVA today.

Shenandoah Valley Academy is strong and growing because of the unwavering support, love and loyalty of SVA Alumni--because of you. Students who attend today become part of the powerful legacy of SVA Adventist boarding school education because of you who generously make financial gifts to sustain this special school. Thank you for committing your energies and resources to the well-being of SVA students today. It is my prayer that this weekend will be a time to renew our love for God and each other. I encourage you to partner with your school again by making a financial gift, or by taking time to encourage current students who in turn will share their energy and joy of youth with you. It is a special honor to have you here… Where Shines the Big Virginia Sun… Welcome! Donald Short Principal

Message from the Alumni President Do you ever feel like it is only the rich and famous that have access to the best things in life? One of the things I love most about SVA is that it isn’t reserved just for the elite. Our students and alumni come from incredibly diverse backgrounds. We may have been poor or rich, from big cities or small towns, or even from the other side of the world. All that was needed was the desire to be here, and then God made a way for each one of us to have this experience. But, no matter where we come from, we all leave SVA “rich” – rich with a great education, rich in lasting friendships, rich with a better relationship with God.

Dr. Kelli Hanon with Class of 2020 president Gabrielle Patrick celebrating Zirkle Gym ground breaking

Each Alumni Weekend, we reminisce, laugh and cry, and talk of seeing each other again in the great homecoming. If you think this weekend is fun imagine the eternal party in heaven. However, that reunion in heaven WILL be about Who we know. I am so glad that SVA has and continues to introduce us to our Savior – the One you need to know. Each of us now can choose to be the “elite” and accept His gift of eternal life. I pray that I see you all there.

In a Little While We’re Going Home

Let us sing a song that will cheer us by the way, In a little while we’re going home. For the night will end in the everlasting day, In a little while we’re going home.

We will do the work that our hands may find to do, In a little while we’re going home; And the grace of God will our daily strength renew, In a little while we’re going home.

Refrain: In a little while, in a little while, We shall cross the billow’s foam, We shall meet at last when the stormy winds are past, In a little while we’re going home.

There’s a rest beyond, there’s relief from every care, In a little while we’re going home; And no tears shall fall in that city bright and fair, In a little while we’re going home.

A special thank you to this weekend’s featured speakers

Dr. Brett Poynter ‘92 and Pastor Buz Menhardt H ‘13. Also, to the Alumni Association officers and volunteers who work to make this very special SVA Family Reunion possible. Thank you to SVA faculty, staff and student hosts, and to New Market Church members, for welcoming everyone so warmly this weekend. To music directors Daniel Biaggi and Kelly Wiedemann and the wonderful SVA student musicians, the keepers of SVA music tradition who lead and coordinate Alumni Weekend special music events, we are grateful for the glimpse of heaven you provide each year.

It is a great blessing for multiple generations of the SVA Family to fellowship and praise God together. We look forward to Jesus’ soon return when we will enjoy the greatest SVA reunion of all and praise Him together for all eternity. May we all be there! 4

Marching to Zion 422 Come, we that love the Lord, And let our joys be known; Join in a song of sweet accord, Join in a song with sweet accord, And thus surround the throne, And thus surround the throne. refrain Let those refuse to sing Who never knew our God; But children of the heavenly King, But children of the heavenly King, May speak their joys abroad, May speak their joys abroad. The hill of Zion yields A thousand sacred sweets, Before we reach the heavenly fields, Before we reach the heavenly fields, Or walk the golden streets, Or walk the golden streets. Then let our songs abound, And every tear be dry; We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground, We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground, To fairer worlds on high, To fairer worlds on high. We’re Marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion; We’re marching upward to Zion, The beautiful city of God. No Night There 427 In the land of fadeless day Lies “the city foursquare,” It shall never pass away, And there is “no night there.” refrain All the gates of pearl are made, In “the city foursquare,” All the streets with gold are laid, And there is “no night there.”

There they need no sunshine bright, In “that city foursquare,” For the Lamb is all the light, And there is “no night there.” God shall “wipe away all tears;” There’s no death, no pain, nor fears; And they count not time by years, For there is “no night there.” Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken 423 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He whose word cannot be broken Formed thee for His own abode; On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s wall surrounded, Thou mayst smile at all thy foes. See the streams of living waters Springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters, And all fear and want remove; Who can faint when such a river Ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace, which, like the Lord, the Giver, Never fails from age to age. Round each habitation hovering, See the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a covering, Showing that the Lord is near; Blest inhabitants of Zion, Washed in the Redeemer’s blood; Jesus, whom their souls rely on, Makes them kings and priests to God. Savior, if of Zion’s city I, through grace, a member am, Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in Thy name; Fading is the worldling’s pleasure, All his boasted pomp and show; Solid joys and lasting treasure None but Zion’s children know.

And the gates shall never close To “the city foursquare,” There life’s crystal river flows, And there is “no night there.” 6

Our Shenandoah Where shines the big Virginia sun, And old Dominion’s streamlets run, From out the Massanutt’s cool shade, And down great Allegheny’s glade, God’s works in nature multiplied, Extol His name on ev’ry side. chorus O Shenandoah (stomp & clap), dear Shenandoah (stomp & clap), In thee do we delight to rest (clapping) And daily strive to do our best, For Shenandoah, Shenandoah. In nature’s dooryard neatly planned, A gift is placed by God’s own hand, The S.V.A. of sacred birth, Our own dear school of sterling worth Whose beacon lit by gospel truth, Sheds holy light on paths of youth. What blighting frost can chill our zeal, Or fury’s evil ever deal, A blow in madness fit to shake Our faith in thee, O S.V.A! Or cause our strength in future time, To [fail] before they cause sublime? Praise to the Lord 01 Praise to the Lord, The Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, For He is they health and salvation! All ye who hear, Now to His temple draw near; Join ye in glad adoration! Praise to the Lord, Who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, Shieldeth thee under His wings, Yea, so gently sustaineth! Has thou not seen How thy desires e’er have been Granted in what He ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, Who doth prosper thy work And defend thee; Surely His goodness and mercy Here daily attend thee. Ponder anew What the Almighty can do If with His love He befriend thee.
