Despite pressure from association leaders and employees statewide, no fix for the Long Term Care Act was addressed in the recent legislative session Contributions to WA Cares Fund began July 1, 2023 and enefits become available July 1, 2026

With WA Cares, Washington workers will contribute 0 58% of each paycheck during their working years to be able to access a $36,500 lifetime benefit (adjusted annually for inflation) that can help pay for longterm care services when needed

Here's the basics: You will only contribute to WA Cares Fund while you ’ re working Once you retire or if you leave the workforce temporarily, contributions stop After contributing for 10 years (or

less if you are nearing retirement or have a sudden need), you can access your benefit when you need care. For a year to count toward contribution requirements, you must work at least 500 hours, which is about 10 hours per week Benefits can be used for a wide range of services like in-home care, paying a family caregiver, home safety modifications, homedelivered meals, transportation and more

While almost all Washington workers will contribute to WA Cares, several types of exemptions exist: workers who had private long-term care insurance before November 1, 2021 were able to apply for a permanent exemption (the timeframe for applying for this type of exemption has closed); Veterans with a 70% or higher service-connected disability can still apply for a permanent exemption; some

workers can apply for a conditional exemption if living out of state, are a temporary worker with a non-immigrant visa, or are a spouse/registered domestic partner of an active-duty service member of the U S armed forces

If your exemption is approved, it is your responsibility to provide your letter to your employer Premiums will be deducted from your paycheck until your approved exemption goes into effect Exemptions become effective the quarter following approval. Refunds for previous contributions will not be available

For more information about compliance, exemptions, or other details visit wacaresfund wa org

Taylor Shellfish Farms is in the process of permitting a new shellfish farm in Oakland Bay

Once operating, the new farm will provide significant benefits to the company ’ s business operations, reinforce its position as a major employer in Mason County, and further support a decades-long tradition of working to improve the bay’s water quality

The company plans to install a floating container shellfish farm in a portion of Oakland Bay that previously was the site of the Simpson Timber log boom The new farm will be used to grow oyster seed to a size that can be transferred to tidelands to mature to market size, or be immediately harvested for processing, as circumstances allow

The floating container farming method is used throughout the world The approach floats a double line of four-foot square containers on both side of a center line This design allows the containers to be flipped, encouraging shell development and healthy growth of the oysters At full farm build out, Taylor Shellfish anticipates 30 double lines, spaced 20-30 feet apart, using about 9 acres of the 50-acre lease area Build out is expected to take several years

The farm will be anchored to the bottom of the bay

A thorough survey of the area finds it to be of a mud and silt composition, without observable submerged aquatic vegetation, including eelgrass

Although anchored, the farm can be moved to a nearby temporary location in coordination with the Squaxin Island Tribe, allowing for the tribe’s access to the area for fishing

Taylor has been a strong advocate for local wastewater treatment improvements, restoration, conservation purchases, and land use planning to improve habitat and water quality in Oakland Bay

In keeping with this stewardship ethic, the farm is designed to minimize adverse impacts to the area ’ s environment and wildlife Further, the natural ability of shellfish to remove human-caused nutrients in the bay is expected to improve the overall water quality

Floating farms are visually low profile The proposed lease area is a minimum of 1,000 feet from shore and operations and maintenance will all be done by boat

The farm’s lease area is within Washington State’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) managed aquatic lands Oakland Bay is home to several commercial operations, including such adjacent uses as log storage, a marina, floating mussel culture, gravel barge loading and a shellfish Floating Upweller System (FLUPSY) operated by Taylor Shellfish and used to grow shellfish seed For Taylor Shellfish, the floating farm will support seed survival and increase the overall capacity to provide the seed volumes needed to support the business and for sale to other shellfish farms The company is headquartered in Shelton and a major regional employer Much of the equipment needed for the farm’s development is designed and manufactured locally by the company Floating farms also are more efficient to operate and as they are not dependent on tides, allow more predicable work schedules for employees

The Chamber supports the establishment of a floating container shellfish farm in a portion of Oakland Bay and recognizes the significant economic and ecological benefits of aquaculture to our community

The establishment of a floating container shellfish farm in Oakland Bay would provide employment for local residents, both directly through the operation and maintenance of the farm and indirectly through the associated supply chains, transportation, and support services The increased revenues this farm may generate indirectly contribute to tourism by supporting infrastructure development, accommodations, restaurants, and other tourist-oriented businesses

Aquaculture also plays a crucial role in supporting the ecological health of our waterways Oysters are filter feeders, meaning they extract nutrients and contaminants from the water as they feed, thus improving water quality The use of floating

containers allows for efficient and sustainable farming practices, minimizing the impact on the seafloor and reducing the risk of contamination from excess nutrients or chemical runoff Oysters shells also offer the value of carbon sequestration

Considering the significant economic and ecological benefits, the Chamber fully supports this application for the establishment of a floating container shellfish farm in a portion of Oakland Bay Furthermore, we are confident that Taylor Shellfish will be a responsible operator, mindful of the community’s needs. They have continually demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate citizenship

The public hearing for the proposal has been set for Wednesday, August 9, at 1:00p The public hearing will be held via Zoom and in-person at 411 N 5th St, Shelton, WA Directions on how to access the hearing will be located on the Mason County website at masoncountywa gov/hearings-examiner under the appropriately dated agenda on or before July 31st, or you can call the Hearing Examiner Clerk at (360) 427-9670 Ext 365 for assistance

Public comment or oral testimony will be accepted up to the close of the hearing

BEAUTIFICATION

Blooms BEAUTIFICATION Blooms

Call it small town Call it curbside appeal Call it classy Whatever you call it, the bright blooms that adorn city streets and gateways offer a warm welcome to visitors and enhance the thoroughfares traveled by residents daily

Now a staple of charm and hospitality, the Chamber added the flower baskets to its annual program in 1999 This year's baskets were hung just before the annual Forest Festival and will grace our streets until OysterFest, at the end of the tourism season

There is a tremendous cost in materials, maintenance, and manpower to upkeep the summer and winter décor and funding for this program is raised exclusively through our annual campaign The Chamber relies on the generosity of our community to help us make this point of pride a reality. Donations can be made toward beautification overall or, for $275 each, an individual flower basket can be sponsored by a business or designated in memoriam of a loved one

The amount collected this year will determine how many baskets will be hung the following year Our goal for this year is to raise $22,500 for flower baskets and the Christmas lights.

Hanging the flower baskets and trimming the town in Christmastown USA is no small task. The Chamber is grateful to community partners including City of Shelton, Green Diamond Resource Company, Hood Canal Communications, Mason PUD 3, and Skookum Rotary; just a few of those who support these efforts year after year

Gifts of any amount are appreciated!

You can support beautification by donating via PayPal or by sending a check to Shelton-Mason County Chamber Foundation, PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584 Every dollar is tax deductible when made to the 501(c)(3) charitable foundation To learn more, visit masonchamber com/beautification or call (360) 426-2021

Chamber Spreads Joy with Chalk the Walks

In a world that’s often complicated, let’s try something simple with superhero-type power in spreading positive vibes: Chalk the Walks. On Tuesday, August 21, people across Mason County will head outside to spend some time writing uplifting messages and creating chalk artwork on sidewalks, driveways, and even parking lots. It is amazing how these small designs make our community more cheerful for everyone to enjoy.

For the seventh year running, the Chamber will join The Joy Team to host a communitywide sidewalk chalking event. All you need is a box of chalk to get the fun started. Just remember to follow some basic rules of etiquette:

·Be respectful: consider your neighbors and others who will see your chalked walks.

·Remember the mission: the goal here is to spread joy, optimism, and inspiration; if what you’re writing doesn’t accomplish that in a pure and simple way, please reconsider.

·Keep it clean: it is very difficult to spread joy if your content is offensive; if an 8-year-old shouldn’t read it, don’t write it.

·Have fun: play is important to our mental and emotional health; connect with your inner child, be playful, have fun.

Artists can share their handiwork using #ChalkTheWalksMasonCounty and posting photos of positive chalk messages. By the end of the day, there will be an inspiring collection of images from all over Mason County (and even the world!) spreading joy, optimism, and encouragement through the playful power of sidewalk chalk.

Stop by the Chamber office at 215 W Railroad Ave to pick up a complimentary box of chalk. Limit one per group until supplies run out.

Drivers will soon need to plan for partial and full closures along a short segment of State Route 106 at Twanoh State Park once a project to remove and replace an outdated culvert began June 19

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin a summer-long project to replace a barrier to fish at Twanoh Creek The work is part of WSDOT’s ongoing effort to remove barriers to fish under state highways

The project is limited to a short segment of road at Twanoh State Park From Monday, June 19, to Sunday, July 9 and again from Monday, July 31, to Friday September 1 travelers will encounter intermittent, one-way alternating traffic during construction, along with occasional traffic stops of up to 15 minutes

Between Monday, July 10, and Sunday, July 30, WSDOT will close SR 106 around the clock to all traffic at Twanoh State Park A signed detour will direct traffic around the closure onto US 101 and State Route 3 through Shelton

The total closure reduces the overall construction timeline and minimizes the project's environmental footprint

Raves! MASONCOUNTY

Thanks to Paul Collie of collie pest control for coming out today and taking care of the stink bugs and being such a kind gentleman! Affordable service, timely & efficient! –

Mestizos angel food cake was fabulous!

Crunchy on the outside and topped with ice cream and a berry drizzle

Rave!!! Fred Holmes Tree Service. Monday, they came and took care of a danger tree for us immediately. The guys were awesome and worked fast. Definitely the right folks to call! Thanks again!!

ARCADIA DRILLING FOUND A WAY TO FIT US IN AND HELPED US ALONG EVERY STEP.

-SETH ELSEN

Rave for The Shelton Theater!! Took my daughter to see the new Little Mermaid Movie and it was really nice! The theater was clean and the popcorn was hot and fresh! Customer service was amazing, only 1 employee working the front counter and he was super quick to work through the long line of people waiting for concessions!

I won a free oil change at Denny's Auto Service during a fundraiser for United Way Not only did they get me in quick, provide me the free oil change, thank ME for choosing them but they also replaced one of my back blinker lights for free! I will only be going there from now on There is just a very welcoming and kind presence walking in there
