Catalyst. Convener. Champion. In early August, we gave our logo a little refresher. It isn’t a huge change, but a subtle update to the colors and fonts that we have been using. We also updated our membership plaque and added three key terms: catalyst, convener, and champion. Nearly everything that the Chamber does is summed up in those three words.

2019 Board of Trustees vvvvvvvvv

The Chamber is a catalyst for business growth. We offer numerous education programs, information that’s relevant to our businesses, and abundant networking opportunities. We are certified national partners of Grow with Google and Small Business Saturday™. Plus, our associations with regional and local industry experts mean we have access to information, tools, and programs that directly benefit you and your organization. We know that students are the future of our local workforce and we partner with our school districts to strengthen workforce development. While we currently assist with mock interviews, help bring expert speakers into classrooms, and act as advisors by assessing curriculum and programs of studies; this partnership will change in a big way over the next year. With the emergence of more academies at the high school level, we look to act as a business liaison to bridge the gap between educators and professionals ensuring that our students are learning best standards and current trends as well as understanding the history behind it. The Chamber is a convener of leaders & influencers. We make it a point to be at the heart of important issues like workforce development, quality of life, and civic engagement. We have built strong relationships with business leaders, government officials, and community stakeholders. Access to these individuals gives us a powerful voice to represent our members and our community on issues that matter. From convening a stakeholder group to help give feedback to city staff about the next roads project to gathering a host of employees to testify to the state legislature about potential regulations, we are able to bring together voices that advocate on behalf of Mason County

businesses and workers alike to make it a better place for all of us. The Chamber is a champion for a strong community. We are active in supporting local efforts. Our staff, Board members and volunteers work to build a healthy economy, promote tourism opportunities, leverage partnerships, and develop plans to build Mason County’s future. We connect our businesses to our community by means of the Community Expo and Bite of Mason County where more than 100 organizations, agencies, restaurants, service providers, and industries share who they are, what they do, and how they can help you. We also hold an annual meeting where we celebrate the best and brightest at the Annual Awards Gala. Our community is filled with folks who are working toward the greater good. They give selflessly of their time, their talents, and their passion to make our community strong. If you would like to learn more and become a community supporter of the Chamber and its initiatives, my staff and I would love to speak with you. Drop by and see us at 215 W Railroad or give us a call at (360) 426-2021.

Time flies when you’re having fun? Well then, I must be having a heck of a good time as this year has flown by. It is hard to believe that it was just a little over four years ago that Sierra Pacific Industries joined the Mason County community, and became a part of the Chamber’s membership. People often ask about the value of Chamber membership, especially for a manufacturing company such as ours. Often times they want to know, “Isn’t it all about retail and restaurants?” Sometimes they are. But my experience with this Chamber is different. Here, the Chamber has been a true asset in every sense of the word. Chamber staff stepped up to the plate as soon as we announced our plans, before we were even members, and have been a valued partner ever since. They not only provided opportunities to meet other community leaders and members, but truly assisted us through the permitting process and navigating our entrance into the community.

Page 4 - BUSINESS MATTERS

As a member of the Chamber’s Board of Trustees, I’ve had a front row seat to the ongoing support that the Chamber provides to not only the business community, but the community in general. There are all the things that people see like the community events, flower baskets, and chamber gettogethers, but there are hundreds of things that happen behind the scenes. When you see the staff go to Olympia to advocate and testify on such diverse things such as Family Medical Leave, EAP (the minimum salary levels) and workforce housing, you really understand how imperative it is to have someone at the table on our behalf. When city and county leaders need a liaison between the business community and themselves, the Chamber steps up and makes sure the right people are at the table. When those same leaders need a reminder of what is important to the citizens of this community, again, they’re right there. Personally, being a member of the Chamber board has brought me in contact with some

of the most amazing, dynamic people I’ve known in my life. I highly recommend becoming involved in the committees and volunteer opportunities. By working alongside these dedicated community leaders, I’ve come to love the Mason County area and now call it home. As an extra bonus, I have made lifelong friends. If you’re not already a member of the Chamber, join us. If you’re already a member but want to get a little more out of your membership, contact me or the staff to help us find a perfect spot to participate. I look forward to seeing you all at the Gala this January, as I hand off the gavel to President Elect Marty Crow, and look forward to more good things to come!

Farewell flower baskets, welcome Christmas Just as we bid farewell to the warmth and sunshine, the flower baskets that made our streets so beautiful also had to retire for the season. Thank you to our generous community and program sponsors that helped us meet our 2019 flower basket goal, with contributions totaling just over $20,000. As Hood Canal Communications brought the baskets down from their posts, our friends at the City of Shelton worked hard to remove and empty the once-lush potted plants and load up the trailer with empty baskets to be used again next year. Fortunately, with the cold weather comes the installation of Christmas decorations! The installation will take place in the upcoming month – just in time for our town’s holiday happenings, thanks to the help of Image in Action Design who will prep and transport the décor for hanging as they check the wiring and mount new LED light bulbs on the lamppost centerpieces. It will then be installed by Hood Canal Communications who donates the time and manpower. Though these decorations don’t look too large from ground level, each stands a full eight feet tall. Welcome back, Santa! The Beauchamp Santa was first installed by the Chamber in spring of 1962. On Railroad Avenue, Santa greeted the increase of visitors brought to Western Washington by the Seattle’s Second World Fair. He then became a fixture at “Santa’s Village” in Post Office Park until 1997. Thankfully, last year Rachel Hansen and her family restored Santa and he graced Tozier Bros Ace Hardware. This year, he’ll have a new (seasonally) permanent home at Overlook Park near the great wheel and bandsaw on Hillcrest. In addition to the Christmas decorations being hung, this year you’ll see real greenery adorning our city streets as the Chamber and its partners continue the quest to reinstate Shelton as Christmas Town USA. With the season officially kicking off with Holiday Magic, you’ll see the downtown merchants open late on the First Friday in December. Railroad Avenue will be closed to traffic and open to the community

where you’ll find bonfires, marshmallow roasting, and kiddie train rides galore along with the treelighting and carols in Post Office Park. The following day, Saturday, December 7, the Kristmas Town Kiwanis Christmas Parade takes to the streets at 5:00 PM. This spectacular holiday lighted parade has more than 50 floats making this holiday tradition one to be cherished by the whole family. As the parade route ends and begins to clear, make your way over to the old Olsen Furniture building where you’ll find a lighted Christmas Tree maze just after we make a go of a new Guinness Book of World Records for the most lighted trees in one place! It’s not just a one-night event; the building will be open throughout the month of December, where you’ll find crafts and DIYs, merchants with handcrafted gifts, consultants with beauty products, and retailers with fantastic apparel. You may even be able to get in on some culinary events and other one-of-a-kind experiences. For more information, go to sheltonchamber.org/ christmastown or call the Chamber at (360) 4262021. The Chamber’s Beautification Project is not only supported by wonderful volunteers, but also businesses and individuals who give donations to fund these projects. Our sincere appreciation goes to all of the volunteers and to our donors, who continue to make Mason County a beautiful place to live, work, and play.

From the ballot to the stage Chamber recognizes businesses, individuals making a difference Mason County has countless volunteers, supporters, and businesses who go above the call of duty to make our community a better play to live and work. To bring attention to these efforts, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber hosts the Annual Awards Gala where the honors are announced and awarded.

Following a rigorous process, dozens of nominees were narrowed to just three in each category. Chamber members received ballots to vote for the annual awards in early November. Each member in good standing receives one vote per category and the winners will be revealed at the Annual Awards Gala on Friday, January 17.

The evening also celebrates the 97th anniversary of Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce, the oldest and largest business organization in Mason County. “The nominees give so much to our community and they do it with such humility,” says Chamber executive director Heidi McCutcheon. “It is important that we acknowledge them for sharing their time and their talent. We appreciate their service as it strengthens our community.”

Chamber supports Shelton School District replacement levy The Chamber has long been a supporter of strong schools in our community. The business community recognizes the importance of high performing schools in attracting new employers as well as in hiring and keeping great employees. We encourage and support programs such as the Health Sciences Academy at Shelton High School that develop alternative models for instructional delivery and that are designed intentionally to meet employer needs with regard to rigor, specificity, and timeliness. We also understand that school programs, including career and technical education and internships, provide a foundation for local businesses to hire students and meet future workforce demands, preparing students for jobs and careers. As the state continues its struggle to amply fund education, we know that local levies are an important component of funding our schools. Because competitive schools are critical to our community, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce Page 20 - BUSINESS MATTERS

strongly supports the upcoming Shelton School District replacement levy and urge voters to vote yes. The levy will replace a tax that expires at the end of 2020 providing approximately 8 percent of the total district budget. This replacement levy funds additional staffing to support class size reduction in K-12, after school programs, activities and athletics. It also supports facilities maintenance, student transportation, technology expenses, and special education services above the state and federal funding. Passing the levy will result in additional funding by the state. This replacement levy is a critical component of basic education in our schools. The Chamber strongly believes that high performing schools are dependent upon this replacement levy and it is necessary to ensure our future success. The Chamber urges voters to give a resounding “YES to schools in the upcoming Shelton School District replacement levy election.

Hood Canal Communications speeds up access to rural communities In 1934, President Roosevelt declared that telephone service was a basic need to be available for all Americans. While providing service in the large metropolitan areas was cost effective and profitable, many in rural areas were left by the wayside. This easily may have been the case with smaller, rural areas such as Union in Mason County if not for Hood Canal Communications who was founded that very same year. Today, more than 85 years after its first call to action, Hood Canal Communications is continuing its legacy of bringing a much-needed utility in Mason County by means of rural cable and

broadband service. Just months ago, the company announced its completion of a yearlong project to upgrade its network facilities by adding two geographically diverse fiberoptic cable connections, each capable of providing 100 gigabits per second throughout the public internet. Hood Canal’s network upgrades marks the largest connections to be deployed in Mason County, giving the company the fastest backbone internet connection currently available in the area. While this is a feat in and of itself, the project complements another project just begun. As announced in late 2017, Hood Canal Com-

munications received $2.3 million from the US Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service Community Connections grant to build a broadband network serving Lake Cushman – only $11 million in total funds were available nationwide. A huge win for Mason County, HCC earned more than 20% of the total available grant funds. In December Hood Canal Communications will celebrate an open house, community celebration, and Chamber ribbon cutting for a community center for residents. “It’s not fancy, just a portable with computers and access, but it is a need for that

community and we have the ability to provide it now at no cost,” said the vice president and general manager Mike Oblizalo. While it may not be fancy, it will provide a big impact to students and residents alike. In an industry where 10% of potential customers sign up for service buildouts, this project’s services have already been requested by more than 90% of Lake Cushman’s potential customers – indicating the urgent need for services. “We’re thrilled to announce this level of connectivity to Mason County and while we are excited to implement the project, it can’t happen soon enough.” When fore-

cast timelines showed that the 3,100-lot project could take two years to complete, the third-generation family run company decided to make service available far more quickly, thus the community center. “We decided to provide this – free of cost – so that residents can have access to five computers and cable services now. Two years is a long time, especially considering how important internet access already is to students.” To learn more about Hood Canal Communications and the local services it provides, visit hcc.net or visit its offices located at 2218 Olympic Hwy N in Shelton or 300 E Dalby Rd in Union.

Save the date for the 10th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament: Friday, August 21, 2020.

Swinging FORE a healthy economy This year’s Chamber golf tournament was presented by Americool Heating & Air Conditioning. The four-person scramble was held on Friday, August 23 at Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club. The sun broke through the fog and streamed through the trees as golfers clambered into carts sponsored by Green Diamond Resource Company, eager to hit the greens as the shotgun sounded at 9:00 AM. Relying on hospitality and showmanship, on-course activities by the hole sponsors ranged from boat races and disc golf to specialty food and beverage giveaways. The Chamber extends

its thanks to Arnold Smith Insurance, ASC Security & Investigations, Bavarian Window Cleaning, Fred Meyer, Hackney Family Dentistry, Heritage Bank, Hillcrest Shell, Lake Limerick Golf Club, Little Creek Casino Resort, Mason County PUD#3, Our Community Credit Union, Peninsula Credit Union, Richard D. Thornbrue, CPA, Shelton Dental Excellence, Shelton-Mason County Journal, The Hardware Distillery Co., The Salmon Center, The Shopper, Tozier Brothers Ace Hardware, and Walmart for their sponsorship. There was plenty of action along the way with players taking a

swing at the Marshmallow Drive, competing for course contests, and shooting for a chance at a hole-in-one. Lending a little help to the scores, players were able to purchase advantages of a licorice rope, mulligans, and fairway tees. Following a rapid pace of play, golfers gathered for a barbecue at the clubhouse and the announcement of the day’s winners. First place went to Wes Taylor, Justin Lanman, Max Omdahl, and Eric Auseth representing Taylor Shellfish; second place went to Mark Nault, Joel Nault, Tracy West, and Dale Jodway representing

Our Community Credit Union; and third place went to Jason Hitsman, Niel Lund, Greg Harvey, and Grant Dishon representing Maple Glen Senior Living. Tournament awards were provided thanks to Our Community Credit Union. All funds raised at the event support the Chamber and its mission to encourage and maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism, and facilitate economic development.

Think Big, Shop Small The Chamber is a proud a member of the Small Business Saturday Coalition, supporting Small Business Saturday® on November 30. Small Business Saturday continues to be an annual holiday shopping tradition — just one part of the larger Shop Small Movement to support small businesses every day and everywhere. Because a visit to the family-owned boutique shop or a stop at the neighborhood taco truck not only supports our local economies, it promotes more vibrant communities. Small Business Saturday, created by American Express in 2010, serves as the ceremonial kickoff to the holiday shopping season for small businesses across the United States. In 2018, U.S. shoppers reported spending an estimated $17.8 billion at independent retailers and restaurants on the day, according to the 2018 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey. In addition, the Small Business Economic Impact Study from American Express found that an average two-thirds of every dollar

($0.67) spent at small businesses in the U.S. stays in the local community, meaning a consumer’s local impact during the holiday shopping season can be significant. Small Business Saturday celebrates the diversity of small businesses across the U.S. and the Chamber recognizes the importance of supporting small businesses, the jobs they help create, and the culture they foster in local communities. The Small Business Economic Impact Study also found that in addition to small businesses directly employing members of the community, spending by those small businesses and their employees in the area also supports local jobs – in fact, for every ten jobs at a small business another seven are supported in the local community. Shoppers and merchants can learn more about Small Business Saturday and how to get involved by visiting sheltonchamber.org/shopsmall. Pledge to #ShopSmall on November 30 and make a difference!

Top ten reasons to Shop Local: 1. You support yourself. When you buy from an independent, locally owned business significantly more of your money is reused to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and retailers. 2. You support community groups. On average, small business owners give 250% more to community nonprofit organizations than large businesses do. 3. You help keep our community unique. Where we shop, eat, and have fun all makes our community home; our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. 4. You reduce environmental impact. Locally owned businesses also shop local, requiring less transportation. This generally means less sprawl, congestion, habitat loss, and pollution. 5. You help create more good jobs. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally as well as in our community, providing the most jobs to residents. 6. You get better service. Local businesses often hire people with a

better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. Often, employees are your neighbors, your family, and your friends. 7. You invest in community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. You put your taxes to good use. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. 9. You can buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy. A marketplace of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses guarantees a much broader range of product choices. 10. You encourage local prosperity. In an increasingly uniform world, entrepreneurs are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.
