The Best and Brightest Among Us Summer in Mason County was a rousing success!

From community block parties and OysterFest to fishing and hiking, so much activity surrounded the season. Olympic National Park announced record numbers of visitors and crabbing was plentiful. We truly live in an amazing area. The Chamber continues to operate the Hoodsport Visitor Center at the base of Lake Cushman Road. We saw our largest crowds to date, not just because of the beautiful weather, but also because of the addition of an ONP Ranger who could issue Wilderness Passes. Just one day, Chamber staff and volunteers assisted more than 288 people! We are proud to continue the Chamber’s legacy of providing visitors with the best service and information available.

Campaign signs popping up throughout the county signaled autumn’s imminence. The Chamber hosted a candidate forum in early October to help the community gain insight to the candidates and their platforms. I like most people and typically I like all the candidates on a personal level. Because of this, it can be hard for me to determine who has the best perspective to lead Mason County. I especially like to see the questions the candidates choose for their opponents because they know what sets them apart. By the time that this issue comes to print, Election Day’s results will have just been announced and my job of advocating on behalf of the business community begins anew.

Regardless of who wins, I appreciate those who choose to serve our community through public office. It takes a special person to carry out their constituents’ wishes.

Autumn doesn’t only bring around a new set of leadership in elected officials, it also is a time to reflect upon inspired people and exceptional businesses doing great things. The Chamber encourages the community to nominate those whom they believe are going above and beyond to make Mason County a better place to live, work, and play. Some of these names we are very familiar with. Others are new or simply fly so low under the radar that you may be unfamiliar with just how much they give, although we see them at everything. Thank you to those of you who took the time to nominate someone. I cannot begin to share with you how much it means to them. happy tears to changing the subject because they don’t want it to be about them, I love making the phone calls to let these extraordinary folks know that someone noticed. That they are making a difference. That their work is important. To each of you who was nominated – thank you for being what makes Mason County so special.

You can see a list of those who will be included on this year’s ballot on pages 22 & 23. We’ll have a special issue featuring the nominees on this year’s ballot for the 2018 Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Boss of the Year, and Rookie of the Year in late December so you can learn more about each of them and just how much they do for our community. As per custom, each Chamber member in good standing receives one vote per category on the ballot. All nominees will be honored and those receiving the highest number of votes will be revealed at the Chamber’s Annual Awards Gala on Friday, January 18, 2019.

I may be biased, but I think this event is the biggest and best celebration in Mason County.

Change is inevitable and I’ve learned to embrace it; whether it’s building codes, taxes, updates to our city streets, or the new grey in my hair, it’s going to happen. What I’m not okay with is stagnation and complacency.

I’ve always believed that you have to have a vision of something greater than today, be it in learning, finances, business, public service, or any area for that matter. But along with vision comes work, and a lot of it. For all the business out there, large or small, I want to personally praise you for your effort.

Sometimes the smallest of beginnings turn into really great things when people put their heart and effort into it.

Many of you self-employed entrepreneurs also know that great success usually means adversity from time to time. That’s one area in which the Chamber exists to help.

We lobby for you in every way that we can to help facilitate growth and a healthy economy. My personal mantra has always

been more like “don’t tell me what I can’t do, tell me what I can do,” but sometimes there are limits, rules, or policies which need to be changed to allow for visions to come to realization.

This is where the Chamber can come in.

To help facilitate economic development, we weigh every new policy with, “Is this good for Mason County’s businesses and employees?” This guides us in our work with legislative representatives, local elected officials, and in advocating on your behalf with statewide departments like L&I and Employment Security. We work diligently to help you navigate the red tape when there appears to be no way around. Even if you’re not the kind to come to networking socials or participate at events, your membership in the Chamber still has much value. For all of our new members, I would encourage you to attend luncheons, as you are able, and start learning what’s happening in our local

economy and how it affects your company.

We enjoy getting to know you more.

Thankfully, the Chamber isn’t just about work, as I’m writing this the 4th quarter of my year as Chamber Board President and my favorite part is getting closer: our January Awards Gala! This event is my favorite every year, not just because of the great food and wine, but because we get to celebrate the biggest reason we exist: you! I hope you’ll join us in celebrating the Mason County Business Community on January 18.

Par for the Course The 8th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament presented by title sponsor Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club saw a full field of players and dozens of businesses raring to tee off for a fun-filled day of networking on the greens.

As the sun shined down on the bright and brisk day, golfers flocked to their carts to head to their respective starting holes. Photo Sponsor Jennifer Rutledge Photography traveled around the course, capturing every moment. The whole day’s play was filled with jubilance by way of hole-inone opportunities provided by Green Diamond Resource Company, as well as our licorice rope and other purchasable advantages that made our players’ moral composure on the fairway a little more stable. As broadcaster Paul Harvey once said, “Golf is a game in which you yell ‘fore,’ shoot six, and write down five.”

After eighteen holes, the fierce competition wrapped up with a silent auction and awards BBQ. An array of high-end golf clubs, accessories, apparel, and other prizes were awarded to the top teams. First place this year ended in a tie between Edward Jones - Eric Thompson, Erin Johnsrud, John Cady, and Rick Bush, and Alderbrook Resort & Spa - Shaun Tucker, Jake Geist, Jeff Raikes, and Justin Gravatt. Second place went to Maple Glen Senior Living - Bruce Lund, Niels Lund, Grant Dishon, and Greg Harvey. Rounding out the winners was Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club – Julie Hinman, Wally Good, Tim Micek, and Jason Tannett.

The Hoodsport Visitor Information Center will once again play a small part in igniting the Christmas spirit and having a place for Old St. Nick to place gifts by offering Christmas tree permits. These allow hearty souls to journey into the Olympic National Forest to cut down a tree of their liking. The volunteer staff is knowledgeable on where, how, and what nots of the Christmas tree sojourn.

Christmas tree permits are just $5 and come with directions as to size limitations and other pertinent details. Silver Firs are the most sought after trees and the visitor center has driving directions to get you going. The Christmas tree tags are available beginning November 15 with a limit of two per customer.

In addition to all-things Christmas tree related, those at the visitor center are always happy to provide hiking and tourism information. With decades of experience guiding tourists in the area, they are eager to continue meeting new folks and become reacquainted with old friends. The Hoodsport Visitor Information Center is located at 150 North Lake Cushman Road, Hoodsport.

The hours during the winter months are Monday – Friday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Saturdays from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM and Sundays from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM.

Holiday Magic to Shine in Downtown Shelton The holidays are just around the corner and Shelton knows just how to welcome the season with Holiday Magic! Together, Kristmas Town Kiwanis and the Shelton Downtown Merchants plan two days of merriment and family activities that you won’t want to miss.

It all starts Friday, December 7 with a 4:00 PM movie showing at Shelton Cinemas, free with your donation of two canned food items.

After the show, wander down with your game card and stop at local merchants who will be open until 8:00 PM for holiday shopping and displays by local artists. At 6:00 PM, the tree at Post Office park will light a dazzling holiday light display as local choirs fill the chilly air with cheerful songs.

That evening, Railroad Avenue will be closed to traffic so you can enjoy marshmallow roasting, wagon and kiddie train rides, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and numerous other types of entertainment! The entire evening’s events are free and the entire community is invited to attend.

On Saturday, December 8 you can stop by a few more shops and submit your game card for prizes or tighten your tennis shoes and join in the Missile Toe Mile Run that begins at 4:00 PM (register online at sheltonharriers.com). The Christmas Parade, presented by Kristmas Town Kiwanis with support from Peninsula Credit Union and Little Creek Casino Resort, is a favorite for generations of Shelton families and is as home town as it gets. There will be custom floats, marching bands, smiling beauty queens, prancing horses, and antique cars. Don’t miss out; bundle up and get your spot along Railroad Avenue by 5:00 PM to enjoy the lighted spectacle.

Building Relationships and Business at After Hours The Chamber’s Business After Hours open the doors to local businesses and offer an opportunity to strengthen relationships. This popular networking social is open to Chamber members, Friends of the Chamber, and their guests.

Business After Hours are typically on the second Wednesday of the month and are hosted at Chamber members’ businesses. Our next event will be hosted by 2nd Street Design Studio on December 12.

Paid Sick, Family Time Laws Impact Employees, Employers It seems that each year, labor laws change and it can be hard to keep up! Recent changes to state laws related to paid sick time and paid family and medical leave affect both employees and employers. Here’s what you need to know: Paid Sick Time One component of voter-approved Initiative 1433, already in effect, requires that employers in Washington must provide nearly all employees with paid sick leave.

4 Employees must accrue paid sick leave at a minimum rate of 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. This includes part-time and seasonal workers.

4 Paid sick leave must be paid to employees at their normal hourly compensation.

4 Employees are entitled to use accrued paid sick leave beginning on

the 90th calendar day after the start of their employment.

4 Unused paid sick leave of 40 hours or less must be carried over to the following year.

4 Employers are allowed to provide employees with more generous carry over and accrual policies.

4 Employees may use paid sick leave to care for their health needs or the health needs of their family members, when a workplace or child’s school/place of care has been closed by a public official for any health-related reason, or for absences that qualify for leave under the state’s Domestic Violence Leave Act. 4 Employers may allow employees to use paid sick leave for additional purposes.

It is important to note that some

employees may not be required to receive paid sick leave because their job duties make them exempt from the Minimum Wage Act.

Chamber Sets Stage for Candidates’Platforms As a service to Mason County voters, the Chamber hosted a candidate forum on Tuesday, October 9 at Olympic Middle School. The forum was live streamed via masonwebtv.com and included five local and state races.

Blooms Fade Away to Winter Beauty Last month, our friends at Hood Canal Communications took flower baskets down and City of Shelton staff emptied once lush potted plants, loading up the trailer with empty baskets to be used next year. Like us at seeing summer’s end, weather that day was sad.

Thankfully, our friends at Domino’s provided hot lunch for these wonderful volunteers on such a wet, blustery day. Before the feeling become too down, we look forward to the next happy installation: Christmas decorations of course!

The installation will take place the week after Thanksgiving, just in time for our town’s holiday happenings. Once again Kiwanians will prep and transport the décor for hanging, check the wiring and mount new LED light bulbs on the lamppost centerpieces. Though these decorations don’t look very large from ground level, each stands a full eight feet tall!

The Chamber’s Beautification Project is supported not only by wonderful volunteers, but also businesses and individuals like yourself who give donations throughout the year to fund the project. Between paying for watering the flower baskets and the energy for the Christmas lights, the Chamber’s cost is approximately $18,000. Our sincere appreciation goes to all of the volunteers and to our donors, who continue to make Mason County a beautiful place to live, work, and play.

Mason County is ‘All In’ for YMCA YMCA’s campaign kickoff, held on October 23, boasted more than 300 guests and incredible support from the local community. The entire affair was infused with Mason County character: the former Olsen Furniture building was transformed with tables set by All About Parties, banners highlighting hometown moments from Cooper Studios, beautiful programs from The Shopper, along with input from numerous volunteers. In true YMCA fashion, students were invited to be part of the celebration. The SHS Marching Band provided a warm welcome upon arrival and culinary students served the delectable dinner from Kern’s Kitchen.

Featuring a keynote address by Tricia Raikes, co-founder of the Raikes Foundation, the program was emceed by Jeff Slakey of iFiber One News Radio. Squaxin Island Tribe offered the blessing, Honorary Chair and Shelton School District Superintendent Dr. Alex Apostle provided introductory comments, Great Bend Center for Music showcased their talent and led the crowd in Y-M-C-A, and the evening concluded with an energetic presentation by South Sound YMCA President/CEO Kyle Cronk and Campaign Chair Patti Case pronouncing that we (Mason County) are ‘All In.’

Of course, the evening centered on the fundraising efforts made thus far, including an announcement that Green Diamond Resource Company & the Simpson Family Foundation have pledged $1 million to the campaign! Joining an impressive list of leadership and community gifts, their gift brings the total of major private gift commitments to $3 million with another $7 million in government grants pending.

For nearly three decades, Shelton grassroots efforts have attempted to build a community recreational and social center to help meet the needs of children, youth, and families. In 2015, local leaders sponsored a community survey that sparked interest from the South Sound YMCA and the City of Shelton to look at a potential partnership for establishing a full-service YMCA in Mason County. Following a feasibility study that indicated the capability to raise the funds necessary, the City of Shelton approved a long-term lease to YMCA of 10.5 acres for a site near the intersection of Shelton Springs Road and Wallace Kneeland Boulevard.

This YMCA promises much more than just a ‘swim and gym’ facility. Building on the momentum and confidence of the recently passed $86 million school bond/levy and construction of an advanced manufacturing lumber mill by Sierra Pacific Industries, YMCA will be a major step in the growth of a county determined to enrich all dimensions of its infrastructure to both retain and attract those seeking a high quality of life in a spectacularly beautiful location nearby to major urban areas.

Currently underway, the Build Our Dream public campaign hopes to exceed $16 million by April 2019.
