A New Publication for the Chamber

W

hen I began my tenure at the Chamber, we had an eight page monthly newsletter mailed out to just Chamber members and elected officials. While meeting with a member about why he was discontinuing his advertisement, he said, “Heidi, it doesn’t make sense to me to advertise to other Chamber members. For the most part, we know each other.” I took that to heart and began looking for a better solution.

In November 2011, we delivered the first 24 page glossy magazine that we called BIGHT. Bight means “a bend or curve in the shore of a sea or river, a body of water bounded by that curve, or simply a bay or a gulf.” We thought each definition fit Mason County well. Now, nearly seven years later, we are again making a change to the way we share information with the community.

Welcome to our new publication: BUSINESS MATTERS. The newly appointed title fits today’s ever evolving Chamber – business does, in fact, matter and we continue to bring attention to business matters. In addition to being mailed, BUSINESS MATTERS will be available for pick up at a number of our Chamber member locations, as well as being distributed as a special insert in the Shelton-Mason County Journal. We believe that this will be a great move to further promote our businesses and connect them with our community at large.

Some articles in this publication showcase that business matters and deeply affects our community. From new Chamber members, businesses opening their doors, networking opportunities, and community activities – our businesses are a large reason of why Mason County is a great place to live, work, and play. There are incredible things that our businesses and their employees are doing! Our Scene & Heard pages highlights just some of these things. You’ll also find community events and upcoming Chamber forums as well.

Things that matter to our businesses are also included in this issue. A great example of this is the rulemaking currently underway by Washington State Department of Labor & Industries threatening to raise the minimum exempt employee salary to more than $74K annually. Yikes! This would mean that anyone who makes a lesser salary would either need to meet that threshold or go to an hourly wage.

When this was considered a few years ago (for a salary of about half of what is now being considered), a colleague of mine said, “I want to earn the same amount, every paycheck, every month.” He noted that especially during weeks that he has special programs; he would exceed 40 hours, but preferred the flexibility of taking off a ‘make up’ day. It’ll be interesting to see how this rulemaking turns out.

Half a year is gone already. Wow! It’s moving fast.

First off, I want to thank all of the quality candidates who ran in our city council race and extend warm congratulations to our new council members.

The people of Shelton made their voices heard on election day and choose four new highly qualified members, and the council elected Bob Rogers as our new Mayor and Deidre Peterson as Deputy Mayor! One

of my favorite parts of this last year has been getting to know so many of the people who work hard to grow and better our city and the entire county. Many of these people do countless hours of work behind the scenes with little or no pay. The heart of a volunteer is usually one of the most passionate. So many of these individuals operate on one great principle, and that is “That a rising tide raises all ships.” I love the passion of people who do great things,

all the while expecting no personal gain. I also believe it’s a far greater nobility to be a person of influence than a person with authority. It takes time, patience, and dedication to rally a community behind a great vision such as the YMCA, bettering our schools, and growing our business community.

Speaking of a growth, it feels as though there has been a ribbon cutting nearly every few weeks since I’ve served as Chamber Board President.

It’s been fantastic to share in the excitement of so many new people starting their new businesses and realizing their dreams. With a growing economy and so many great resources available, now is the

time to jump in if you have been on the fence. A recent ribbon cutting I attended was very unique; the Hillburn Preserve trail was built by students from Choice High School. This is another extreme example of amazing people doing hard work for the enjoyment of the entire community. There were over 100 people in attendance to honor the youth.

I’ll end with this, no matter what you’re dreaming of, whether it’s a community recreation center, a new business, or a community project; you don’t have to look hard to find many great people who are willing to be an asset to your vision and to the great destiny of Shelton and Mason County.

Expo Street Fair for the Win The annual Community Expo, Street Dance & Bite of Mason County was yet again an enormous success! This year, the event stretched all the way down Railroad Avenue to make it more united, provide easy walking paths, and allow for even more business booths to participate.

The event had the feel of a high energy block party with local businesses and community organizations drawing on showmanship and entertainment to showcase their unique services and sharing what makes their business so dynamic. The Expo went on into the evening as Little Creek Casino Resort’s DJ Smylez cranked up the tunes for the return of the Street Dance.

With so many places to eat, play, and shop it’s no surprise that the people’s choice awards for Golden Fork and Best Booth were a hot race! For the third year in a row the Best Booth Award went to Maple Glen Senior Living. This year they had an elaborate “weekend at the lake” themed booth, complete with cornhole, vintage water skis, and a dedicated team of ‘lifeguards.’ This year’s Golden Fork award went to Smoking Mo’s who were serving up pulled pork sliders with a scrumptious

layer of slaw and signature BBQ sauces.

We’d like to give a shout out to all the amazing food vendors and the inspired dishes they brought to the table this year. Some big thanks go out to Craft Pie & Art Bar, Domino’s, El Sarape Cantina, Little Creek Casino Resort, Maple Glen Senior Living, Radio Fryer Foods, Shelton Farmers’ Market, Smoking Mo’s, Tempting Eats & Treats, Walmart, and Urraco Coffee Co. The Expo also contained a beer & wine garden featuring local favorites, including Keyhole Valley Brewing, The Hardware Distillery Co., Stottle Winery, and Walter Dacon Wines.

As with any large event, a successful event reflects the hard work of the planning committee.

Chamber Beautification in Full Bloom S pring may have already come and gone, but now the sun of summer helps us see even more clearly the beautiful hanging flower baskets that adorn the streets of our city.

This project, led by the Chamber, could not have been possible without the help, support, and organizational skills from members of the community. Our thanks go to the Shelton Kiwanis Club & Foundation, Hood Canal Communications, and City of Shelton, who were instrumental in the planning and hanging the flower baskets.

These partners help each year, donating their equipment and time to the Chamber’s beautification effort. The business community and individual sponsors have taken responsibility for the costs associated with the installation and upkeep of the Christmas decorations, flower baskets, and streetlight banners.

Our appreciation goes to each business, service organization, and individual who provides financial support for this program. There is a tremendous cost associated with beautifying our community and it is funded in its entirety by donations; no tax dollars are allocated towards these projects. All donations are restricted to support beautification programs.  Gifts of any amount are appreciated! Building Relationships and Business at After Hours The Chamber’s Business After Hours always feature incredible businesses, great friends, and outstanding networking! Business After Hours is a free networking social for Chamber members, Friends of the Chamber, and their guests. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and network with

Blues & Brews to Become Annual Event

W

e had high hopes that our Blues & Brews Festival was going to be a hit, but we could not have expected the absolutely huge turnout over Father’s Day weekend. The Mason County community came together once again and made this inaugural event in Evergreen Square one for the books!

The party was cranked up as headliner CD Woodbury Trio took center stage at 1:30 PM. The band rocked the square and set the relaxed, good time vibes that carried on through the rest of the day.

Closing out the day on center stage, The Pleasure Hounds ended the evening perfectly with two encores and the crowd out of their seats!

We’d like to give a huge thank you and shout out to all of our brew vendors for making Blues & Brews the next staple summer event in Shelton! The primary election may have passed but the time for voting has just begun.

Nominations for the Best of Mason County 2018 are now open. For decades, the Chamber has recognized the most deserving businesses, individuals, and organizations through annual awards: Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year. This year we are thrilled to announce an additional three award categories!

Rookie of the Year: This award recognizes the company that has opened a storefront or began its operation in the award year and has fulfilled a gap in services, retail, or operations in the Mason County community.

Community Supporter of the Year: This award recognizes a volunteer on behalf of or a non-profit organization who greatly impacts Mason County through service, volunteerism, donations (monetarily and/or in-kind), and activism.

The 2017 award went to Robert D. WilsonHoss for his tireless and passionate efforts of 25 years in advocating for the YMCA and successfully leading the project to become a reality.

Darren Eisele of Hood Canal Communications won the Volunteer of the Year award for his activity and participation on numerous local community organizations and boards, including the Chamber’s Business Expo and Ambassadors committees, United Way of Mason County, and the Mason County Forest Festival Association.

All nominations will be reviewed by the Chamber’s Member Services Committee, before going to the Chamber Board of Trustees to determine ballot placement.

Ballots will be mailed to all members in good standing, the majority vote by the membership determines the award winners.

The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Gala held at Little Creek Casino Resort’s Skookum Event Center on Friday, January 18, 2019.

The above new categories join our traditional awards categories. 2017 President of the Chamber Board, John Lester of the Shelton-Mason County Journal awarded the President’s Choice to the late Ron Pannell for his instrumental efforts in maintaining and coordinating Shelton’s city-wide beautification efforts, and for his service as an invaluable part of many projects with Shelton Kiwanis Club.

Business of the Year honors the business that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Shelton and Mason County business community over the past year. Last year, the award went to The Shopper for their outstanding products, services, and contributions in support of a multitude of local organizations, charities, schools, and foundations.

The Citizen of the Year award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large.

Hoodsport Visitor Information Center Serves up Wilderness Permits After decades of providing tourists, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts with information about the beautiful Lake Cushman, Hood Canal, Olympic National Park and Forest, our beloved Hoodsport Visitor Information Center received a few long-awaited interior renovations and the introduction of even more services.

If you are an outdoors enthusiast, you may be familiar with the information center’s layout: you step in to the visitor center and are immediately greeted by our hard working volunteers and a sizeable desk that has been a mainstay in the center for years. We are thrilled to say the information center now has two brand new, sturdy information desks. One desk is for our volunteers and the other is for the newest addition to the information center… Olympic National Park Wilderness Staff! ONP’s staff are assisting hikers with permits and backpacking information at the Hoodsport Visitor Information Center,

Friday to Sunday throughout this summer. Previously, hikers had to go to the Ranger Station at Quilecene to receive a wilderness permit, bear cans, and information. Having a wilderness Ranger at Hoodsport has made it easier (and closer) for people to get into the Park.

“I love the openness of the center after getting the new desks in and rearranging everything,” said Samantha Franklin, who serves as the visitor center’s volunteer coordinator along with her husband, Mark. “It gives a lot more room for our visitors to wander freely and look at all of our informational brochures and maps without having to squeeze by others.”

The Hoodsport Visitor Information Center is located at 150 N Lake Cushman Rd, Hoodsport. Aw Shucks! OysterFest is Here Again On the first full weekend in October, the Port of Shelton‘s Sanderson Field is where you’ll want to be. October 6 & 7 is the 37th OysterFest, the official Washington State Seafood Festival, who commandeers all of Mason County for two full days! With the help of nearly 100 community organizations, Skookum Rotary stages its annual small town, big event. The gates are open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday and 10:00 AM to 5:00 AM on Sunday; you are invited and we hope to see you there.

Activities and exhibits on Friday are designed to help kids learn about our local waters, what lives in them, how to keep them clean, and how to be safe in and around the water.

Sanderson Field is a half mile north of Shelton on US Highway 101. Locals know that the best way to get to OysterFest is through the free shuttle service.

Free parking areas and pick-up points are located at the Shelton Civic Center, Shelton Yacht Club, Olympic College, Shelton High School, and the Port of Shelton property adjacent to Olympic Air.

Annual Salary Minimum of $74,880 is Unrealistic

Y

ou may recall that just before President Obama left office, his administration forwarded legislation that would increase the exempt salary wage from $23,660 (set in 1976) to $47,476. At that time, a Texas court filed an injunction declaring that action exceeded the administration’s authority. Though the US Department of Labor has been working towards updating legislation and a higher minimum salary wage, Washington State Department of Labor & Industries has been taking steps to make changes locally through rulemaking.

The Chamber has been diligently following the rulemaking process and has provided feedback on behalf of the 400 businesses and the 6,000 employees in Shelton and Mason County that we represent. Three main points were included in these comments: the timeline, the calculation metrics, and the scope.

An expedited timeline to complete rulemaking in under a year is unrealistic.

In such a complex situation, there should be careful consideration and deliberate conversations both in the business community and with exempt workers themselves. Many business owners and employees alike are unaware that changes are being considered. Due to our state’s diverse regional income, communication is essential to determine the most appropriate outcomes. It is unlikely these conversations and considerations can be held within the proposed timeline.

The disparity between major metropolitan areas, such as King County, to the smaller regions and rural communities greatly sways the average income levels, without accounting for difference in cost of living. Some of the numbers cited in the initial presentation do not fairly reflect Washington’s workforce. For instance, the Washington State average weekly wage of $1,021 was quoted. However, of the 39 counties, only 3 have weekly wages over

$1,000. An average weekly wage of the 39 counties (not per capita) is $829 – a mere half of King County’s average weekly wage of $1,626. The national statistics skew the numbers even further.

The Chamber suggests that the best approach is for L&I to update the rule describing the job duties that qualify workers for exemption from the state Minimum Wage Act, pointing to the United States Department of Labor language from the 2004 rule. While updating this, it should also include language to allow updates when a federal amendment is final.

Some of the wages being considered within the scope of rulemaking are outside of an attainable level in many rural communities.

For example, a method being considered is a multiplier of three times the minimum wage – equating to a minimum annual salary of $74,880. This amount is more than triple the current salary threshold and is impractical for many businesses and organizations, including nonprofits. This would be cause for all salaried employees below this threshold to become hourly employees, creating an undesirable situation for many employees and employers alike.

The Chamber encourages earnest conversation at all levels, with the businesses community and with workers, in all regions across the state. We believe that gradual changes, increased outreach, and consistency with federal rule are the best ways to minimize unintended hardships. As the rulemaking continues, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce will continue to be an active participant in the process and will continue to provide feedback to L&I. Held in the fields of Hunter Farms, PumpkinFest celebrates the coming of fall with a mixture of the quaint country charm and innovative spark that makes the town of Union so unique. Throughout the celebration visitors can participate in a number of fun family-friendly events, including hay mazes and tractor hayrides to Hunter Farms’ scenic pumpkin patch in the foothills of Mason County.

Visitors are immediately immersed in the scenery, from the sprawling fields of

orange pumpkins to the verdant mural of gold and green in the surrounding hills.

Nearby you’ll find that merchants, artisans, and restaurateurs alike come forth with the season’s finest. Shop for a few seasonal items, take in the expansive panorama of Puget Sound with a glass of vintage wine in hand, catch a performance of talented local musicians, or sample some of the delicious cuisine.

PumpkinFest is a month-long event and builds up to a grand finale on Halloween weekend which includes costume contests, parties, entertainment, tours of a genuine haunted house, and an exciting catapult

contest where contestants gather in the fields of Hunter Farms to compete for the title of Union’s masters of pumpkin-launching.

The catapult contest, which will be held on Saturday, October 27, is open to any high school, nonprofit organization, business, or private group of people interested in entering. Both catapults and trebuchets – catapult-like devices that use counterweights rather than tension to propel the projectile – are acceptable for entry. Teams in each division will compete for three categories – accuracy, distance, and design – with trial runs available every Saturday in October until the competition.
