Chamber asks SPD to hit the streets Julie Sund Nichols | Whitehouse & Nichols, LLP In response to concerns raised by downtown business owners, the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee recently asked Mayor Gary Cronce to work with the Shelton Police Department to increase safety for downtown merchants and their customers.

Mayor Cronce and the Shelton Police Department responded immediately by stepping up foot patrols downtown. “When I look out the window and see the foot patrols, I am thankful for their presence. I can see they are making a difference just being visible,” said downtown business owner Russ Denney of Pantorium Cleaners & Tailors.

Several business owners had expressed concern that the increased transient population was causing their customers to feel unsafe coming and going from their businesses. “This is not a problem that is going away, but the foot patrols have been a critical step in increasing safety, and the Chamber applauds the City for taking swift action,” says executive director Heidi McCutcheon.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) often works with larger cities such as Seattle on similar issues and has pointed to foot patrols as an effective way to ensure that downtown areas remain safe and attractive for businesses and tourism. Studies and experiments in cities around the country have

shown that a greater foot patrol presence is increasingly effective at reducing violent crime and results in fewer complaints about vandalism, vagrancy or other problems associated with downtown and urban areas.

The Chamber committee continues to explore constructive solutions to increase safety downtown. Some of these ideas include giving the Police Department more tools such as adding a dumpster diving ordinance and/or loitering provisions to the Shelton Municipal Code.

The Government Affairs Committee is responsible for monitoring and facilitating discussion related to local, state and federal government impacts that may positively or adversely affect the business community of Mason County. Root for the Chamber Team!

The Chamber invited its Members to “Root for the Chamber Team!” at the annual auction.

The event was a tremendous success with thousands of dollars raised to support the Chamber’s events and programs.

The Chamber's All-Star Night & MVP Auction was held on April 20 at the Skookum Creek Event Center at Little Creek Casino Resort. The sports-themed event began with a warm-up of stadium fare and great inflatable games which included basketball tossing, golf chipping, soccer kicking, football throwing and home run hitting! The silent auction offered bicycles, snowboards, paintings, care packages and nights out on the town. The live auction had a number of great deals from world class golf, romantic getaways, sporting packages and fantasy flights.

Auction MVP Sponsor Columbia State Bank pulled out the stops to make an unforgettable experience.

They, along with our Game Day Sponsor, Clowns Unlimited, keep asking the question: “if it's not fun, why do it?!” We think they were right on point.

Rounding out the lineup was Tailgate Sponsor Bakala State Farm. After all, a game just isn't the same experience without the celebration.
