A message from our leaders

Every day, our collaboration enables people who have experienced injury or illness the opportunity to achieve outstanding outcomes through our continuum of care.

Though we opened our inpatient facility only a few years ago in 2020, the inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitative care we provide, as well as fitness and wellness services offered by Sheltering Arms, increases access to a breadth and quality of services that is unrivaled in the commonwealth and is nationally recognized.

In 2023—our first year eligible—U.S. News & World Report ranked Sheltering Arms Institute the 29th best rehabilitation hospital in the nation and #1 in Virginia.

This level of care for patients and their families is only possible because of the commitment of so many people in our community. We are grateful to everyone who makes this a reality: generous donors, volunteers, talented healthcare professionals, and a wide array of highly specialized community partners.

In addition to the recognition from U.S. News, this year in review illustrates the reach of the organization’s achievements and some of the people touched by our mission. While so much was accomplished in the past year, we are still early in our journey to reinvent rehabilitation for life beyond limits and many more opportunities lie ahead.

We are grateful for all that has been accomplished and eagerly look forward to the future.

Inpatient News

Since opening in June of 2020, Sheltering Arms Institute has become a nationally ranked, destination physical rehab hospital and we are continuing to grow and expand.

Expansion of Inpatient Hospital Approved

In October 2023, Sheltering Arms Institute received approval from the Virginia Department of Health to expand our inpatient rehabilitation hospital following a certificate of public need (COPN) application process.

The 30 additional beds, which will also be used to provide rehabilitative care, will bring the hospital’s total number of beds to 144. The new patient rooms will be built on the hospital’s fourth floor. Currently shell space, it was constructed as part of our 212,000-square-foot structure in anticipation of future needs. The total capital cost of the project is an estimated $20 million with anticipated funding to include a combination of bank financing and equity contributions from joint venture members Sheltering Arms and VCU Health.

“Since we opened in 2020, we have seen immense need for the high-quality physical rehabilitation services that our team members provide, serving more than 8,000 people from across the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond,” said Alan Lombardo, CEO of Sheltering Arms Institute.

“Our goal is to further increase access to help people achieve their best recovery and live healthy, independent lives.”

Construction is expected to begin late 2024 and take approximately one year to complete.

Sheltering Arms Institute RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION

29th in Nation #1 in Virginia for Physical Rehabilitation U.S. News & World Report

One of the earliest strategic goals of Sheltering Arms Institute was to be nationally recognized. In summer 2023, U.S. News & World Report named Sheltering Arms Institute one of the Best Hospitals in the country and among the Top 50 for physical rehabilitation.

In our first year eligible, and of the 1,041 physical rehabilitation hospitals evaluated, only 12% won “Best” honors, excelling at factors such as clinical outcomes, level of nursing care, and patient

experience. These rankings assist patients and their doctors in choosing the right hospital for them.

Recognitions like these only happen with an outstanding team effort. Since opening, our community of team members, patients, caregivers, volunteers, community partners, and donors have helped build Sheltering Arms Institute’s reputation. Our commitment and courage to pursue excellence is now recognized on a national stage.

Functional improvement is a multi-faceted measurement of physical skills and abilities between admission and graduation. On average, patients who receive inpatient rehabilitation from Sheltering Arms Institute accomplish gains in mobility and self-care that are significantly greater than the national average.

Patients who receive physical rehab at Sheltering Arms Institute have a higher chance of returning home versus returning to acute care or going to a skilled nursing facility.

Research has found that individuals who receive more therapy per day following illness or injury have better outcomes than those who receive fewer hours.*

Jacob’s Story

In December 2022, 17-year-old Jacob Witt and his dad were driving when another vehicle rear-ended their truck propelling them into oncoming traffic.

A log truck collided with the Witt’s vehicle on the passenger side where Jacob was sitting.

Upon waking up at VCU Health, Jacob’s doctor told him he needed surgery to rebuild his tibia, fibula, and wrist.

Jacob’s primary goal was to walk across the stage at his high school graduation that June, a goal that his surgeon said would be a stretch. He embarked upon his physical rehabilitation journey at Sheltering Arms

Institute and, with the support of his care team, Jacob was walking by Valentine’s Day—in time for his 18th birthday, senior prom, and graduation.

Given her son’s age, Jacob’s mom, Pam, stayed by his side during his entire inpatient stay. “They made sure that our family as a whole was taken care of, and they cared for Jacob in every way possible.

His team even printed out his homework so he wouldn’t fall behind in school.”

“I really don’t think I’d be where I am now without Sheltering Arms Institute; you’re not just a number there.” -Jacob Witt

In August 2023, Jacob began his college career at UNC Charlotte where he studies mechanical engineering with a motorsport focus. He credits his success to the dedicated therapists who helped him regain his strength as well as the outstanding nurses who provided around-the-clock care and tended to his face wounds.

Outpatient News

Outpatient Services Expand to Main Campus

Inside of our inpatient rehabilitation hospital, you will also find outpatient clinicians serving the community. “In August 2022, we started a pilot project,” said Christina Withers, senior manager of therapy services, who manages outpatient services in the hospital. “The pilot demonstrated the demand, and we’ve been growing steadily since then.”

The team, which is commonly referred to as

Short Pump Outpatient, sees patients five days a week and offers physical, occupational, and speech therapy to individuals who have recently completed inpatient rehab at Sheltering Arms Institute. Operating in the hospital, they are also able to provide patients access to functional electrical stimulation as well as durable medical equipment checkouts.

On average, the team schedules 150 patient visits per week. Building up to that volume required support from across the organization. “Our clinicians receive positive feedback from patients; however, we wouldn’t be able to serve them without support from other teams,” Withers said. “We wouldn’t be at this juncture without great partnerships with finance, patient access, the call center, care management, inpatient therapy, facilities, and information technology.”

post-renovation compared to the same time frame pre-renovation 8.5% Increase in visits

“The Virtualis VR technology has helped me turn the challenges of recovery into a game and look forward to my visits. I believe it helps me better understand my condition and gives my therapist data-driven insights into what techniques and exercises will best help me improve. I can actually see that I am making progress each visit!” - Randy H. Sheltering Arms Institute Reynolds patient

Expanding Fitness Services and Financial Aid

The services and support we provide do not end when therapy is complete. An array of adaptive and medical fitness, wellness, and recreation services help individuals in our community exercise safely and engage in a healthy lifestyle. However, these services are not covered by health insurance, leaving them out of reach for some.

In summer 2023, Sheltering Arms expanded financial assistance to its adaptive and medical fitness services to help increase access to oneon-one care with certified exercise physiologists. Financial assistance is funded by generous

donors. Eligibility is based on multiple factors such as income, family size, and assets; sliding-scale discounts range from 50 to 75 percent.

Access to these services also expanded geographically with the addition of Adaptive Exercise Training (AET) and NeuroFit services to the Laburnum Outpatient Center in East Richmond, impacting the lives of many individuals who otherwise may not be able to participate.

One client, who wishes to remain anonymous, began her rehabilitation journey following a stroke. She completed all of her

goals in therapy, but still requires the benefits of an individualized, safe, and structured exercise plan.

Now, she is continuing her progress with AET at Laburnum stating that the program has helped in her journey toward “feeling whole again” and that “without financial assistance, I would not have been able to enroll in AET... It was a big help to me.”

Desmond’s Story

On June 6, 2023, what began as a joyous celebration of academic achievement turned into a deadly nightmare. Desmond Johnson, Jr. was attending his cousin’s graduation from Huguenot High School at the Altria Theatre when a gunman opened fire. As Desmond threw himself on top of his 7-year-old son to shield him from the bullets, two ricocheted off the ground hitting his face and spinal cord. “My body went completely limp. I was in a pool of blood, and I couldn’t move. All I kept hearing was my son saying, ‘Daddy, get up!’”

Desmond spent nearly one month at VCU Health before coming to Sheltering Arms Institute for inpatient rehabilitation. He worked tirelessly in physical and occupational therapy to regain his strength. Relearning to stand up, walk, and write again left Desmond feeling defeated at times and thinking, “Why me?” However, Desmond says he quickly realized that he received a second chance at life, so he had to keep pushing.

Today, Desmond has completed inpatient and outpatient therapy and can not only walk, but is back to running short distances. He developed a special bond with his entire care team saying, “Everyone felt like family.” Desmond’s experience with Sheltering Arms Institute has given him the power to overcome every obstacle he faces, enabling him to do things like spend time with his son and newborn daughter. This young father maintains that the therapists will always push you, but at the end of the day, “You just have to be motivated to push yourself even further.”

Together Again!

Power to Overcome Celebration Returns

TOGETHER AGAIN! On March 29, 2023, we were thrilled to once again host our Power to Overcome (P2O) celebration. It was a joyous evening to honor all of the patients, caregivers, team members, volunteers, donors, and community members who work together to help individuals find their Power to Overcome after illness or injury.

Guests heard from former patient Jordan Erisman and his sister, Morgan, about Jordan's resilient recovery following a spinal cord injury sustained while caving. Another former patient,

George Rose, also shared his story and performed a song he wrote with music therapist

Audrey Weatherstone.

Thank you to our P2O committee

members Rick and Kellie Kelley (co-chairs), Robert and Eleanor Angle, Clem and Kelly Sydnor, Charlie Xavier, André Xavier, and Michael Jarvis as well as all our sponsors and attendees. Your presence and generosity helped make the night even more special!

Proceeds from P2O support patients and their families after graduation from rehab.

Thank You Sponsors!

Reuben Sergeant Balances Work and School

During the night shifts at Sheltering Arms Institute, licensed practical nurse (LPN) Reuben Sergeant diligently tends to his patients on the neuro unit. Reuben graduated from a LPN program in 2013 with the hope of later becoming a registered nurse (RN); however, life’s obstacles delayed his plans for nearly 10 years. Finally, with the support of Sheltering Arms Institute’s tuition reimbursement program, Reuben is two semesters away from becoming a registered nurse.

Born in Jamaica, Reuben was first introduced to the world of healthcare at a hospital in New York where he worked in the kitchen and delivered food to the patient floors. He was always driven by a passion to help others. “As a younger person, I always wanted to help, but I couldn’t understand where help was needed,” Reuben recalls. Inspired by the work around him, Reuben became a therapy technician before ultimately

For Reuben, providing one-on-one, personal care is where he believes he can make a meaningful impact.

pursuing nursing due to the profession’s “more intimate setting with the patients at the bedside.”

He spent years working in geriatric care before applying to Sheltering Arms Institute in 2021. “When I heard about Sheltering Arms Institute, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the presentations in my orientation gave me a good feeling. As I came on the floor and saw how everything was managed and operated, I said, ‘Okay, yeah, this is somewhere of high standards.’”

Juggling work and clinicals six days a week, Reuben is grateful for the tuition reimbursement and his leaders who willingly work with his school schedule. “[They] afforded me the opportunity to be flexible and get things done.” Reuben is scheduled to complete school in August 2024 when he will officially become a registered nurse.

Peer to Peer Patient Mentoring Program

Reaches New Heights

Sheltering Arms Institute's Peer Mentor Program connects current patients with individuals who have endured similar diagnoses; Troy Lewis and ShaDonna Cox are two individuals who developed a strong connection. While recovering from a stroke he sustained in May of 2023, Troy met ShaDonna, who survived a stroke in 2015 and became Troy’s mentor through the program.

When ShaDonna experienced her stroke, she says she lacked the support of someone who

could relate to her. She wanted to be able to give back and let patients know that “I can relate."

ShaDonna’s statement resonated with Troy. Grappling with the sudden loss of abilities, he stated, “I could do everything, and then, just like that, it was all gone.”

The program's creators, Community Engagement Manager Alison Clarke and Volunteer Alison Shapiro, work with national organizations for diagnosis-specific mentor training, including brain injury, spinal cord injury, limb loss,

burns, cardiac conditions, COVID, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. However, because a national training program for stroke mentors did not exist, they collaborated to create one. "To sit with someone who can relate to how you're feeling in this recovery process is very valuable," said Clarke. “The mentors are grateful to give back by sharing their journey to provide hope.”

Currently, the program boasts 20 mentors across eight diagnoses with overwhelmingly positive

results. Ninety-six percent of patients feel that their mentor is a good match, and 93 percent state that mentor visits helped address their concerns.

In cases such as Troy and ShaDonna’s, the Peer Mentor Program fosters resilience, hope, and proof that there is light at the end of the tunnel. “When I saw a video of Troy walking on his own, I was overjoyed and felt like I truly made an impact,” ShaDonna said.

I had family who would come visit me, but they don’t really understand a stroke because they haven’t been through it. I just wanted to be able to give back and let patients know that I can relate. - ShaDonna Cox

Building Community

Starts with Relationship

Seamless collaboration is required to deliver outstanding patient outcomes in a healthcare setting. Maintaining and sustaining those outcomes in the community requires another level of collaboration. For our patients to enjoy durable outcomes, we actively build meaningful connections throughout the community.

We do more than casually connect with other amazing non-profits. These groups, which provide essential services for our patients, come to the hospital campus for a community partner expo so team members can learn about services available to patients after discharge.

In addition, to connect patients with these services, we use Unite Us, a referral platform that links healthcare providers and nonprofits.

Our team members also eagerly find opportunities to build relationships with these non-profits. By contributing volunteer hours to our partners, they help make communities healthier, more resilient, and more accessible.

Among several activities this year, team members worked with project:Homes to build and install wheelchair ramps and they volunteered at several camps, including Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp and Camp Bruce McCoy for brain injury survivors.
