Sexual Assault Nursing Exam

Frequently Asked Questions Who performs a SANE exam?

A SANE exam is performed by a registered nurse who has undergone specialized training to learn how to care for victims of sexual assault.

What happens during a SANE exam? The sexual assault nurse examiner will ask you a series of questions about your medical history, recent sexual activity, and the sexual assault itself. They will address urgent medical concerns first (open wounds, serious injuries, etc.) and then give you a physical examination, followed by addressing non-urgent medical concerns. The nurse examiner will walk you through all the options for your SANE exam, and will make sure you're comfortable with every step - you get to choose how the exam is conducted, and can revoke consent at any point in the process if you are uncomfortable

Do I have to have evidence collected during my SANE exam? It is completely up to you whether you would like to have evidence collected during your examination, and SANE exams can be beneficial even if you do not want to involve the legal system right away. If you do choose to have evidence collected, we can store it in a safe storage room for up to a year to give you more time to decide whether you'd like to prosecute your assailant. Even if you choose to release your examination kit to the police, you can still choose not to press charges or make an official report.

Who else is in the room during my SANE exam? You are welcome to bring anyone you'd like with you to your exam, such as a close friend or family member. Shelterhouse also has advocates who can provide emotional support and answer your questions about your SANE exam. Your comfort and privacy is a top priority, so your exam itself will remain completely confidential and private.

How long after a sexual assault should I get a SANE exam? Ideally, SANE exams would be performed up to 5 days after an assault. However, the sooner the exam is conducted, the better. Certain medications (such as preventative HIV treatment) must be taken within 72 hours of a sexual assault. However, if it has been longer than that, you are still able to request an exam.

Will anyone know I had a SANE exam? SANE exams are completely free and confidential. Your insurance company will not be notified, and the police will not be informed unless you request it. The choice is yours on whether you'd like to share your experience with anyone.

Who can receive a SANE exam? SANE exams are available to anyone who has experienced sexual assault, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic background, or race. There is no judgement or discrimination.

How do I request a SANE exam? If you've experienced assault and would like a SANE exam, you do not have to present at a hospital or doctor's office to receive care. Calling an agency, such as Shelterhouse's helpline (877-216-6383), will lead you to advocates who can connect you with SANE services.

Can I be treated for pregnancy and/or STDs during my exam? During your SANE exam, your examiner is able to provide you with STD prevention medication, emergency contraceptives, or a toxicology test if you'd like to receive them. The choice is yours.

Can my child receive a SANE exam? If your child has been sexually abused, a SANE exam can be an important step in ensuring their physical and mental wellbeing. Sexual Assault Nursing Examiners are specially trained to work with children, and will make sure the examination is as comfortable and non-invasive as possible. With consent from a parent or legal guardian, a nurse examiner will conduct a SANE exam on a young survivor while also being respectful of the child's wishes and level of comfort. If the child is uncomfortable or does not want the exam to continue, the nurse examiner will be respectful and receptive to those boundaries. Asking for help can be your greatest strength.
