Thank You for Giving a Gift That’s Golden

By Bobbi Peterson (Oakmont), Chair, and Ann Erickson (Lucina), Co-Chair Thanks to the many generous Shell Point residents who contributed to the Employee Christmas Fund, more than 1,100 Shell Point staff couldn’t stop smiling during the gift distribution event held on Friday, December 7.

Residents donated a total of $456,708 to the Employee Christmas Fund, which resulted in an average amount of $580 for each employee who worked full-time during the year. Those who worked less than 12 months received a pro-rated amount, based upon hours worked.

Thank you to each resident who gave generously and thoughtfully to the 2018 Employee Christmas Fund. You have surely made Christmas a little merrier for Shell Point’s dedicated employees.

New Year’s Renovation

A

s we celebrate the New Year, most of us hope that changes for the better will occur. Many would like to see our resolutions transform us back to our former physically fit selves. However, in spite of our best efforts, the bodies God gave us are wearing out, bit by bit.

Four years ago, after a year of chemo and radiation, I had worked myself back up to walking four miles each day. Then, I managed to break my leg. I was devastated.

Thankfully, I was admitted to the Pavilion, where one Sunday I heard a message on TV which changed my perspective from despair to hope.

The preacher quoted John Calvin’s observation of our physical being, saying “The decay is visible, the renovation is invisible.” This statement met me where I was. Even though I knew God as my Creator, Savior, and Comforter, I was extremely depressed looking at my current situation in terms of my own strength, ability and productivity.

This thought of “invisible renovation” gave new meaning to 2 Corinthians 4:16. It says, “So we do not lose heart.

Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.”

No one wants to experience the decline of our physical bodies, yet we have the hope that on this side of heaven, God is transforming us into the person He wants us to be. We can learn to trust and depend on Him instead of planning our own agendas and relying on our own strength.

New Year’s resolutions may bring about some beneficial changes, yet they are limited in effect. Our real hope for the future is what God has accomplished inside of us.

His renovation is limitless and will last forever. This is something we can truly celebrate, every day of our lives.

Schilling Dining Room in the Larsen Pavilion

All Pavilion residents and their guests are invited to celebrate the charm of wintry weather during this seasonally themed dining experience. Winter Wonderland festivities will be held on all floors for lunch and dinner, regardless of whether you choose to eat at the Schilling Dining Room or in the comfort of your own room. The menu will be served throughout the Pavilion for all to enjoy.

The cost is $10.99 for Shell Point residents and $11.65 for guests (includes 6% tax). Reservations must be made

Christmas Tree, Shining Bright

C

hristmas trees have always been an important part of the Christmas season; many memories are made around those them each year. After all, what is Christmas without family, friends and Christmas trees? Pavilion residents enjoyed all three during two special tree lighting events: one for the Larsen Pavilion skilled nursing center, and one that lit up the Island Lagoon on behalf of the entire Shell Point community.

Both events incorporated a special tradition that honored two Larsen Pavilion residents for their age. Eleanor Whitecar and Bill Cathey, both 102

years old, participated in the tree lighting event by flipping the switches to illuminate each respective tree.

A New Jersey native who moved to Shell Point in 2005, Eleanor Whitecar celebrated her 102nd birthday on October 2, 2018. What does she like best Christmas? “Families should focus on the Christmas story, so my favorite part of the holidays is reading the Bible scriptures together,” said Eleanor.

Bill Cathey turned 102 on November 22.

Born in Asheville, North Carolina, Bill

moved to Tennessee prior to enlisting into the military.

For Bill, Shell Point is family affair, with his brother Gordon and daughter Vicki both residing at Shell Point as well. And isn’t it great to be home for the holidays?

Horsing Around

E

xcitement and anticipation spread throughout the Larsen Pavilion when the word got out that Kit, a friendly horse from Whispering Pines Clydesdales, would visit Shell Point! Pavilion residents eagerly queued for an opportunity to get up front and personal with Kit. Thanks to assistance from staff and volunteers, there were many smiles and faces filled with awe as each resident had their chance to pet the beautiful Clydesdale. This vocal, well-behaved girl “talked” to residents quite a bit that afternoon.

What a delightful visit with Kit!
