ike so many from around the country, when Assisted Living staff and residents learned of the nation’s healthcare shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), they knew that they wanted to help! Springs resident Barbara Hilton and King’s Crown Nurse Christine Thompson have always enjoyed sewing and quickly found themselves donating time and materials to be able to sew homemade

masks. As of mid-April, Barbara Hilton had already made over 350 homemade masks and isn’t stopping anytime soon!

Christine has perfected the pattern even making children's masks for many of her co-workers children. “We want to express our sincere appreciation to these volunteers for their creativity in providing these additional masks to the current supply we have for our Shell Point employees,” said Christy Skinner, vice president of healthcare at Shell Point.

30 DAY WALKING CHALLENGE

alk your way to better mental and physical health! We challenge you for the next 30 days to commit to getting out of your apartment and walking more. While following all quarantine restrictions as recommended by the Department of Health for Assisted Living residents, it is extremely important to also take care

of your physical and mental health and walking is one of the best things we can do for ourselves. Walking is something you can do while still maintaining proper social distances from others. Whether you choose to walk your hall, floor, Assisted Living building or choose to walk outside no matter where you choose to walk it will be beneficial.

Here are just a few of the many benefits of walking: •Boosts Endorphins- Easing stress, tension, anger, fatigue, and some confusion in as little as 10 minutes •Works your arm and shoulder muscles •Engages Ab muscles helping to improve your balance During the next 30 days, commit to going out for a walk at least once a day. If you already go for walk once or twice a day, aim to add an additional walk into your

•Strengthens your legs •Improves your Heart Health by increasing your heart rate and circulation daily routine. While we all know distance is important, it is most important to remember that our goal should be to get moving more than we did yesterday.

ACTIVITIES TO LOOK FORWARD TO! In the midst of a world-wide pandemic we all know the importance in taking time to have fun and there is no better medicine then laughter! We are excited to share that each week in May we will be programming around a weekly theme. These themed weeks will include themed dress up days, special meals, treats, and other fun surprises!

ead Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss Day, is a yearly observance in the United States by the National Education Association. It is held on the school day that is closest to March 2, which is, Dr. Seuss' birthday. Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) is best known for authoring over 60 children’s books.

Read Across America Day began in 1997, to encourage children to read more books and also to get them excited about reading.

To celebrate the day, assisted living residents gathered up books and took a trip to Summit Christian School in

Fort Myers to read to the students.

Each resident chose the book they would like to read and shared it with three different groups of students. The students were attentive and eager to listen to the stories our residents had to share.

As the day came to an end at Summit Christian School, the residents were happy to donate all the books to the school to be added to their library. The residents were kind enough to donate snacks as well that reflected on the books they read. Goldfish crackers were given because one of the books read was

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, along with gummy rabbits resembling the book The Magic Hat Shop.

Assisted living residents really enjoyed being able to use their talents and get creative and expressive while reading their stories. It was such an experience to watch the residents and students interaction during the storytime. Residents don’t often have the opportunity to read to groups of children so this was just such a special experience, and they hope they can do it again next year on Dr. Seuss' birthday!
