Sweeping Changes
G
rowing up in the fifties and sixties, road maps helped me and my parents get from point A to point B, especially during long vacation trips. We also used the large Rand McNally Road Atlas that had maps of all the U.S. states. If we got lost or we went down the wrong road, we could check the map again. Now many of us use GPS to find our way around, but we still like to keep a map handy in the glove compartment! Did you know that God has a road map too? It’s the Bible and it will guide and teach us what roads to take during our life here on Earth. The Bible is unlike any other book because everything written in the Bible was inspired by God. 2 Timothy 3:16 says that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and for instruction in righteousness. It teaches us about faith, hope, love, joy and peace, as well as how to be humble like Jesus. Without God’s road map, the Bible, we can get lost and may take the wrong roads on the highway of life. Instead, follow the book’s instruction: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6) The Bible promises that if we will ask Him, God will direct us in the way to go. Like Psalm 119:105 says, “The word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”

O
ne of Shell Point’s many goals is to provide services which allow residents to age in place and remain in their home or apartment. This means reassessing current practices and making any changes needed to those programs. Shell Point’s three assisted living facilities, The Arbor, King’s Crown and The Springs, have recently undergone a shift in the way staff duties and personnel are assigned. This change was made in an effort to better serve assisted living residents within each building. Beginning August 1, dedicated housekeepers have been employed to provide cleaning services for resident apartments on a weekly basis. This shift eliminated these cleaning duties from the role of the care assistants that serve assisted living residents, formerly known as HCAs & RCAs, which grants these staff members additional time to assist residents with daily living activities and other personal caregiving duties. Although the care assistants will provide light daily cleaning, such
as emptying waste baskets and making beds, the majority of the apartment cleaning duties have shifted to the newly hired housekeepers. Shell Point is always striving to improve the quality of residents’ lives, with an emphasis on quality healthcare. The addition to the housekeeping team and shifting of those cleaning duties from the care assistants is one way to accomplish those goals. Since the program was implemented, assisted living residents have provided much positive feedback about the reorganized housekeeping services. Assisted living residents deserve much credit, since they were also a driving force behind these changes in staff responsibilities, as many advocated that the duties be shifted away from our caregiver team. Care assistants have also embraced the change, happy that they have more time to focus on residents’ growing needs and care. Published monthly for assisted living residents at Shell Point.
