The county’s population has grown more than 35 percent from 143,293 residents in 2000 to approximately 197,936 in 2011. That’s a lot of people who know the same thing – Shelby County is a great place to raise a family or retire.

History of Shelby County Established in 1818 and named after the Revolutionary War hero and first governor of Kentucky Isaac Shelby, Shelby County has long been valued for its land — all 800 square miles of it.

The northern part of the county is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Central and southern Shelby County flattens out into farmland and pastures. Two major rivers are located in Shelby County. The Coosa snakes along the eastern border, while the Cahaba cuts through the northeastern part of the county.

At its founding, the county was rural with a population of 2,492, according to Shelby County census records.

The much higher population density today – just under 198,000 according to the 2011 U.S. Census Weather estimate – is a reflection of the county’s changing Average Average Monthly Precipitation industries over the years, said Shelby County

t nearly 10,000 acres, Pelham’s Oak Mountain State Park is, by far, Alabama’s largest. And whether you’re into hiking, biking, camping or learning about Alabama’s natural offerings, Oak Mountain has something for you.

The park, which has entrances off State Park Road and off Alabama 119, features thousands of acres of untouched woodlands and lakes nestled in the midst of one of Alabama’s largest metropolitan areas.

With such a wide range of offerings, Oak Mountain State Park welcomes thousands of visitors every year, and appeals to young and old alike.

Camping Oak Mountain State Park offers a large family friendly campground offering visitors a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The campground, which borders Beaver Lake and is surrounded by central Alabama’s rolling hills, features 30 amp recreational vehicle service, 85 campsites with water, electricity

and sewer and 60 primitive campground sites with water nearby.

The sites feature picnic tables and fire rings and are surrounded by seven bath houses, coin-operated laundry facilities and a country store.

Lodging If recreational vehicle or primitive camping isn’t for you, check out Oak Mountain’s fully equipped woodland cabins, which are open year-round. The park includes 10 two-bedroom cabins, each of which features a king bed and two double beds and sleeps a maximum of six guests.

The cabins also feature one bathroom, a kitchenette with utensils and cookware, central heat and air, a porch, outdoor grill and picnic table and Dish Network-enabled flat-screen televisions. Two dog-friendly cabins are available upon request for an

additional $15 fee.

BMX track Oak Mountain’s BMX bike track is the oldest continuously operating course in the National Bicycle League, and regularly hosts races for riders of all skill levels. The course is off Tranquility Road.

Golf course The park features the Oaks Golf Club, which is consistently rated by Golf Digest among the top 75 public golf courses in the country.

Equestrian The park features guided trail horse rides and pony rides Wednesday-Sunday, and offers stables for those who bring their own horses. In addition to the horse stables, the park also recently opened a state-of-the-art equestrian campground featuring 12 sites, each capable of housing eight people, two vehicles and one trailer.

Beach

Picnic areas The park features several picnic pavilions capable of accommodating a few guests all the way up to a gathering of 150. Pavilions may be reserved for events, and caterers are allowed.

is a 2,500-square-foot facility off Terrace Drive, and is a joint venture among the state park, Shelby County and Samford University. The center features a hands-on, interactive experience giving children and adults a close-up look at the biodiversity of Alabama and Oak Mountain State Park.

O

fficials at South City Theatre, an award-winning community theater in Shelby County, know they have a tough responsibility to uphold. South City is, first and foremost, a family theater — but that doesn’t mean performers shy away from tougher subject matter.

“We try to find something interesting, and yet not too controversial,” said South City Artistic Director Sue Ellen Gerrells. “We walk a fine line between keeping audiences happy and keeping our actors and our directors engaged and stimulated.”

Recently, South City performers have put on a mix of classic and modern plays, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Crimes of the Heart,” “Agnes of God” and “Sylvia.”

They don’t repeat any plays, selecting different ones for each season.

“They constantly change — we have

nothing that we repeat,” Gerrells said.

Others have taken notice.

South City has won the state community theater competition for the last three years, for “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Agnes of God” and “Sylvia,” giving South City the right to represent the state of Alabama at the Southeastern Theatre Conference for each of the past three years.

Last year, Gerrells herself was honored with an All Star Cast award for her performance as the Mother Superior in “Agnes of God” at the Southeastern Theatre Conference, she said.

South City also teaches local children about the magic of theatre through children’s workshops and a summer camp.

The children’s workshops are typically put on twice a year, Gerrells said.

“The goal is to give the students an opportunity to learn about theater by doing it. They go into a workshop for a couple of months and learn all the different aspects that go into putting on

a production,” she said.

At the end of the workshops, students work together to put on a production.

Workshops are led by local high school and college theater teachers.

The summer camp is similar to the workshops, except camp takes place over two weeks, rather than over a period of months.

“They spend the first week learning about the craft of acting, designing and production, and then in the second week they put on a production,” Gerrells said.

Gerrells said those who work with South City are focused on pleasing the audiences and building the theater’s already-sterling reputation.

“We hope to accomplish happy audiences, we hope to accomplish actors and directors that have had an opportunity to practice their craft and learn more, and to earn a quality reputation as a theater,” Gerrells said.

W

ith its temperate climate and rich soil, Shelby County has always been a hub of agricultural prosperity. When the first settlers arrived in the early 1800s from South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, among other origins, many were farmers looking for fertile ground.

Old Baker Farm, located in Harpersville, has always been a “cotton and corn farm,” said owner Jerry Baker.

The farm is the oldest homestead in the county, dating back to the early 1800s.

The Baker family used to grow crops and raise thousands of chickens, along with hogs and cows, but with the changing times, the farm has adopted an educational view.

With annual pumpkin patches and Christmas trees, Old Baker Farm opens its gates to families and school kids to teach them about the Civil War and American Indian history.

Stone Hollow Farm, also located in Harpersville, is a privately owned farm dedicated to providing fresh and organic foods, including goat milk cheese and herbs, as well as skin-care products.

farmers are courageous, ingenious and pushing the boundaries of traditional farming.

Morgan Creek Vineyards, Vizzini Farms Winery and Ozan Vineyard and Wine Cellar offer visitors from Shelby County and beyond a chance to taste locally made wine. While their wines are sold at retail outlets across the country, visitors to their Shelby County locations can experience a full-day of activities from wine tastings, train excursions, meals and more.

As one of a small number of wineries 38

across the state, Shelby County’s wineries are playing a big role in deciding what it means to be a winery in the Deep South.

Rumors of a fourth Shelby County vineyard began circulating in 2012, but Charles Brammer, owner of Morgan Creek Vineyards, welcomes the competition.

“I’m really excited to have these other wineries in Shelby County,” he said.

“Nobody would go to Napa if there was only one winery in Napa.”

Blue Spring Manor Blue Spring Manor, nestled away in Vincent, is the perfect place to go to get away from it all. In the heart of rural Shelby County, privacy is the byword for innkeeper Doris Harris.

“It’s quiet, it’s away, and (visitors) are just able to relax and take a deep breath and kind of renew themselves,” Harris said of the inn.

Blue Spring Manor has its own restaurant, the Red Rooster Dining Hall, and Harris said manor staff works hard to meet a guest’s every need.

“We work hard to make sure we don’t have too many people or events on the property at the same time,” she said. “We just want to meet their needs to have the experience they want to have when they come.”

Columbiana Inn Located in the heart of Columbiana, the Columbiana Inn is within easy walking

distance of the city’s historic downtown, with its museums, shops and restaurants.

Innkeeper Diane Moore said she and husband Andrew strive to give the inn a family feel.

The house, originally built in 1889 and restored over five years beginning in 2002, has six guestrooms, each featuring its own private bath and wireless Internet.

The Moores work to make guests comfortable in any way possible, including providing a refrigerator stocked with drinks and snacks specifically for guests.

However, she understands the value of making oneself scarce.

“We want to make them feel at home.

We’re available when they need us, and we’re not available when they don’t want us,” she said.

“It’s not what you expect from a bed and breakfast. These are very spacious bath areas with double showers and special elements.

They’re filled with the latest fixtures and marble baths and showers,” Seaman said.

“People have told me they compare our bathrooms with those in L.A. People just come from all over the country.”

The inn features four guestrooms, each with its own style. Those who stay there can enjoy the inn’s extensive library, or order a specially prepared picnic lunch to enjoy on the Fox and Pheasant grounds. Guests may also choose from many sumptuous options for breakfast, dinner and dessert.

Seaman said everything in the property was updated from 2008-2009.

“It’s all fresh and nice,” she said. “My goal is to deliver more services than (guests) expect — the very best service.”

McKibbon House McKibbon House, which is also in Montevallo, has retained its historical charm. Built in 1990, the Victorian house, was updated in 1999. However, it was restored within the historical registry guidelines, so most of the home is original, according to innkeeper Lyle Cunningham.

“It is a historical home, which I think just makes it more special,” Cunningham said.

Each of the inn’s four bedrooms has a private bath, wireless Internet and a TV, as well as more than 200 movies in its library.

The staff serve wine and cheese in the afternoons, and mornings are made better by fresh coffee and drinks set up outside the bedrooms, as well as a full buffet breakfast.

If guests wish, they can request that visits include chilled champagne in their rooms, a manicure and pedicure or a massage.

Cunningham said the goal for guests is to “feel totally relaxed, comfortable, and well taken care of.”

here are you from? I was raised in Birmingham, but was born in New York City. What type of culinary training do you have? I began working in restaurant kitchens to pay for college and fell in love with the business. The thing we have right now I really enjoy is called Surf and Swamp, which is grouper and crawfish tails topped with hollandaise. It’s a really popular seller here. We’re leaning a lot toward seafood. We also have filet mignon and ribeyes, but we go through close to 100 pounds of fish a week. Who has been your greatest influence? My mom – even when I was a little kid, I was in the kitchen with her cooking. Now, she makes all of the desserts in the restaurant What are you ingredients for success? We try to use fresh, local. We use as much local we can. With us living out on the farm with a lot of farmers around us, we try to buy a lot of local produce.
