Adventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. No trope chronicles the bond between two soulmates more than love stories, so I thought I’d tell part of my and Justin’s love story, our proposal. Nine months after our son’s arrival, my now husband, Justin, and I journeyed to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with my family to honor my late father’s memory and scatter his ashes in the city he loved so much. Ironically, this happened to be the second year in a row that my family embarked on this trip to honor my father while also having forgotten to bring my “father” along. About two hours into our five-hour-long trip, my mother realized we left my father–again–and quickly thought of a coverup story. She asked Justin when he was planning to propose. Keep in mind, my mother is as straightforward as the stairwell to heaven. Justin, however, came prepared with the ring he secretly purchased several months earlier and took this trip as an opportunity to open a new chapter in our lives. My mother, my sister, my Aunt Mary Catherine “MC,” Jacob, Justin and I on our trip decided to venture up to the top of Anakeesta–one of the tallest points in the city–to admire the view. Several hours of raging postpartum mood swings and hot flashes later, I decided I was done for the day and was going back to the cabin. Without missing a beat, Aunt MC told me she was going to buy me new shoes, so that my feet wouldn’t hurt, and I would continue the hike. Before I could object, she sprinted to the nearest boutique and bought the first pair of cute flats she could find. Sheepishly, I thanked her graciously and wore my new shoes the rest of the trip. When we finally arrived at Heart Twigloo at Vista Gardens, I actually said, “Hey, this would be a great place to propose.” Little did I know how accurate I actually was. Justin and I waited our turn to get a picture taken and right as I turned to look at the view, he dropped to one knee and asked me the question I’d dreamt of hearing most all of my life. Saying I was shocked would have been the understatement of the decade. I was so surprised and happy that when I finally blurted out my answer, I accidentally gave my right hand instead of my left for Justin to slide my “ring by spring” onto my finger. In this issue, you all will read about Mountain Brook Magazine’s 10 featured couples and their love stories. No matter how intricate or cliché, each story is unique, and what I hope will renew in you all a fondness for adventuring in love. Love on, readers,

How did your spouse propose?

My first husband proposed during a tornado in Pine Mountain, ha!

I was given a note, instructing me to get into the Rolls Royce out front of the restaurant I was at. We took a romantic drive, and he popped the question.

At the Court Street Fountain in Montgomery. Seemed fitting for a history-loving attorney proposing to a U.S. history teacher.

Linda Dobbins Dance protégée Cameron Kennedy’s vivid storytelling commands every audience’s attention. BY ANNA GRACE MOORE PHOTOS BY GREG BAIRD, TRACY GATHER, MICHAEL SCOTT & CONTRIBUTED MountainBrookMagazine.com 13

P

Performing his first-place, award-winning solo, Requiem, Cameron Kennedy majestically transcends the stage floor, ever so gently brisking the floor with every arabesque and arms outstretched–as if to give the audience a warm embrace. Sorrow dresses his saddened smile–one not quite defeated but downtrodden–until he slowly pirouettes into an opportunity and steps confidently through an open door. Whether on stage or in reality, Cameron credits his dance instructor, Linda Dobbins, for helping open doors in his life he never thought possible. Linda, who founded her namesake dance company in 1994, has spent the better part of 30 years helping dancers not only discover their identities through expressive art, but also enable them to unlock the doors that dance will open. Linda Dobbins Dance boasts an enrollment of nearly 400 students and is one of the most soughtafter dance schools in the Birmingham community. In 2013, Linda formed The Academy at Linda

Dobbins Dance, which is both a performing arts and highly competitive academic school that is open to students in 5th-12th grade. While numerous students audition each year, The Academy only accepts a handful of students and has just eight students enrolled–including Cameron, who was accepted into the school when he was 11 years old. Students attend school MondayThursday from 8:15 a.m.-5:30 p.m and sometimes later into the evening, depending on their rehearsal schedules. While academics are reserved for the morning sessions, the students spend their afternoons studying all styles of dance such as ballet, tap, jazz, acting, modern, contemporary, lyrical and hip hop. The Academy has five instructors, who all have advanced degrees in dance, including Linda’s daughter, Anna Marie Dobbins, whose acting and dancing skills can be seen in 22 different feature films. Anna Marie is based in Los Angeles, and she

travels cross country to mentor and teach students at The Academy. She and Linda together have mentored Cameron for the past several years. The Academy’s ballet director, Jennifer Moretti, has studied ballet in France since she was 7 years old and has performed with the Opera of Bordeaux, Opera of Nice, Opera of Limoges and the Paris Opera Comique to name a few. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t love to dance,” Cameron says. “It’s rewarding spending my time here. I can see the sacrifices paying off.” Cameron began dancing at Linda Dobbins Dance when he was 9 years old, and after performing his first-ever solo on stage, he was connected with the Kinky Boots Broadway Tour based in New York City. Cameron taped his audition and sent it in, not thinking he would get a callback, much less land a lead role– which is exactly what he did. He was cast as Young Lola in Kinky Boots, and before he knew it, Cameron and his mother, Keisha Kennedy, were traveling 16 hours on a plane to East Asia, where they would spend the next three months on tour. Cameron had not yet hit double digits and was performing for audiences in Shanghai, Beijing and more. “From the time he started at Linda Dobbins Dance, Cameron danced around the house, in the garage, at the store–every time I saw him dance, it did something in me,” Keisha says. “I’ve never not felt that Linda Dobbins Dance has Cameron’s best

DANCING OUTSIDE THE BOX Cameron’s favorite style of dance is contemporary because one is freely able to express himself and make a story his own. interest at heart.” By the time he was 15 years old, Cameron had set his sights on The Dance Awards, which is the largest and most prestigious dance competition in the nation. Created by Break The Floor Productions (BTF) in 2009, The Dance Awards serves to showcase the best of the best dancers from each of the four tours within BTF. These tours travel through close to 20 major cities in the United States and act as the regional competitions or “stepping stones” for each tour’s finalists to go on to compete in nationals– The Dance Awards. More than 1,000 dancers compete on each tour, but only 20 finalists are selected from each to move on to The Dance Awards. In June 2022, Cameron competed at The Dance Awards in Orlando and placed in the top 10 teen male best dancers at just 15 years old. In June 2023, he competed yet again and was honored with first runner-up in the entire competition for his division. The following weekend, Cameron flew to New York City to

attend an intensive program at The Juilliard School. As one of his most impressive feats yet, Cameron was one of 41 students out of thousands of applicants worldwide that were chosen to attend this three-week-long program. Cameron studied under industry veteran Roderick George, focusing on all styles of dance but most importantly, techniques such as Horton, Graham and Limone. He says this program opened his eyes to the careers that both concert and commercial dance offer. Now in his junior year with college on the horizon, Cameron says he feels confident that whatever avenue he chooses to pursue, his experience at Linda Dobbins Dance will have prepared him for it. Currently, he is preparing his acts not only for The Dance Awards in 2024, but also his college auditions. Cameron says schools such as The Juilliard School, Pace University, Chapman University, the University of Southern California and New York University are some of his dream schools, and considering his talent, it will not be surprising if he is accepted into any of them next year. Cameron is also not the first Linda Dobbins Dance protégée to see university doors open from his or her dance

experience. Several of The Academy’s alumni can be seen performing with Dolly Parton and the Brookylnettes, or appearing on Disney and Nickelodeon. With 30 years of training dancers under her belt, Linda says many do not realize just how advantageous careers in dance can be. Linda prioritizes teaching dance education over recreation, which is why she believes her students are so successful. The bottom line of every lesson she says is always the same: Dancers are performers first and should share the story with the audience. While this may seem confusing to those not rhythmically inclined, it is actually very easy to understand when one watches a dancer perform– his movements tell a story. Every good storyteller is able to evoke emotion from his audience–helping them to feel as though he does. To witness such artistic fluidity is to enjoy watching Cameron perform. Although he may not yet know what his future holds, he does know that as long as he keeps doing what he loves, dancing, the doors he wants to open, will. Swoon-worthy Reads Recommendations from

Gracie Roth Library Assistant II at the O’Neal Library

Fairhope native Gracie Roth recently graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, double-majoring in English and Theatre. Ever since she was a child, she told people she wanted to work surrounded by books. Where better for her to work than at the library? She is passionate about sharing stories–be it on stage or on a page. Here, Gracie recommends her top five swoonworthy reads romantics will enjoy just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Eligible

By Curtis Sittenfeld | Romance Another “Pride and Prejudice” retelling? Yes, please! New York Times bestselling author Curtis Sittenfeld (“Prep” and “American Wife”) pays homage to Jane Austen’s classic storytelling of the frenemies to lovers trope. This book puts a modern twist on the classic tale, as readers experience this clever reimagining. Liz is a magazine writer, Bingley is a reality TV star and Mr. Darcy, well, he is as grumpy and as misunderstood as ever. Check this book out for a fun, romantic read.

The Unhoneymooners

By Christina Lauren | Romance Enemies to lovers, forced proximity and fake marriage. “The Unhoneymooners” by Christina Lauren covers the best romance tropes. Ami’s twin sister, Olive, is the luckiest person in the world. Her fiance is someone out of a dream, she financed her entire wedding by winning internet contests and she seems to have everything go her way. For better or worse, Olive is stuck spending time with the best man, Ethan, her playful nemesis. After food poisoning ruins an all-expenses-paid honeymoon for the bride and groom, two sworn enemies embark on a Hawaiian vacation. Will they stay enemies, or will this vacation reveal deeper feelings?

Dial A for Aunties

By Jessie Q. Sutanto | Romance/Mystery In this story, a family wedding business gets its biggest job yet: Getting rid of a body! When the main character, Meddy, accidentally kills her blind date, her mom and aunties know they have to protect Meddy. This hilarious book provides mystery, family drama and second-chance romance. Hopefully, the guy who re-enters Meddy’s life has a better fate. Readers will roll on the floor laughing after reading the first few pages in this comedic murder mystery.

Funny Story

By Emily Henry | Romance The queen of romance, Emily Henry, does it again in her newest book, “Funny Story.” What happens when your fiance leaves you for his childhood friend? Naturally, you move in with the childhood friend’s exboyfriend! Surely the two new roommates won’t fall in love. The title of this book rings true as this is Emily’s funniest story yet.

Forget Me Not

By Julie Soto | Romance When wedding planner, Ama, gets her dream job, she doesn’t think anything can bring her down until she is forced to work with her ex. Not only did she break his heart, but this is also the most important event of her career. For florist, Elliot, nothing has gone right in his life since Ama broke up with him. Now, Ama and Elliot must work together on their biggest wedding yet. What could go wrong? Maybe something will finally go right.

H

Homes are a reflection of their owners’ personalities. For Anitra Logan Hill–founder and principal designer behind A. Logan Designs–coming home to a peaceful oasis first begins with intentional design. A Mobile native, herself, Anitra graduated from Bishop State University and majored in drafting and design technology. She quickly realized her passion for creating and decided to go back to school at the University of Alabama, where she

earned her degree in interior design and worked for a firm before moving to Birmingham in 2019 with her husband. The COVID-19 pandemic set in not long after Anitra settled, so she worked from home for two years before finally being able to venture out on her own. She established her first brick-and-mortar, A. Logan Designs, in Hoover and has since enjoyed working in-person, one-on-one with her clients to

create the homes of their dreams. This beautiful home that is featured was one of Anitra’s favorite projects. Originally built by architect Paul Hager in the 1960s, the home rests on 2.5-acres and boasts a gorgeous view of the hillside in the backyard. This midcentury modern home has since been updated with new paint, landscaping and a kitchen remodel. The majority of the renovations, however,

were to preserve and accentuate the gorgeous detailing of the house’s originality, such as the slate tile in the entryway and living room fireplace. Anitra says every renovation, every vintage find– like a mirror–reflects the homeowners’ sole appreciation for traditional beauty in a modern era. What is now their home first began with a dream to create their forever oasis–a home whose elevated presence welcomes all who enter. MountainBrookMagazine.com 25

Dining Room The homeowners actually purchased the table, which first attracted their unique eye for design due to its wood detailing, from an antique store. The buffet is from Encore, and the vases are from Scandinavian Design Gallery. 26 Spring 2024

From

Me to You It is a privilege to be a guest of honor at a wedding, so, lovebirds, take pride in symbolizing such fellowship through one of the first steps in the wedding planning process: invitation suites. Originally located in the heart of Vestavia Hills, Annabelle’s has been serving brides for all of their invitations, stationery and calligraphy needs for 20 years. Here, the new owner Elizabeth Sharpton and calligrapher Jan Pruitt showcase several of their most intricate invitation suites. Photos Contributed

Timeless& Traditional

Lucy and David Harrison wed on Sept. 23, 2023, at Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Because of their traditional ceremony venue, they opted for a timeless suite. Jan penned the full suite. The invitations were engraved in champagne ink on a royalty-size card with double envelopes and a lace overlay.

Cultured

Maci and Joel Mize tied the knot on Sept. 23, 2023, at Allie’s Cabin in Beaver Creek Village, Colorado. Kaylee Morgan painted a watercolor landscape of the beautiful Rocky Mountains for the couple's destination wedding. It is used on the invitations' vellum overlay. The Mize’s invitation suites were printed on square Arturo paper, which is an Italian, hand-torn paper. Maci opted for moss green lettering in a besotted script for a more fluid feeling for her suite.

Organic

Originality Mary Hunter and Healy Vise joined in joyful union on May 20, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi. What is unique about this couple’s suite is their blend between traditional and contemporary design.

While Mary Hunter chose champagne lettering in scripts Prints Charming and Mozart, she modernized her suite with cohesive branding. A custom shield and duogram was designed with the couple's initials and was used on the dance floor, favors and more.

Forever Florals Second only to the bride, the most beautiful part of any wedding is the flowers. Floral arrangements carry such a sentimentality that physically showcases the vision of any bride’s desired palette, stylistic choices and decorum. Here, Sasha Johns, managing partner of Amazing Flowers and Occasions, reveals just how her arrangements helped bring to life the wedding vision of her clients and friends, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson. By Anna Grace Moore Photos by Katelyn Masters Photography

MountainBrookMagazine.com 41

The

Happy Couple

Sasha had the thrill of any florist’s career–designing gorgeous florals for her family friend’s wedding. Sasha first met the happy couple, Kaitlyn and Roderick Anderson, through Kaitlyn’s mother, Suzanne. The two friends go back nearly 15 years, and Sasha says this has been one of her most favorite events.

42 Spring 2024

The Details Sasha utilized ivory and peach garden roses; pink, ivory and white stock; periwinkle delphinium; and yellow and peach ranunculus. She added in bits of greenery including green dragon, olive branches and both silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus into Kaitlyn’s bouquet and the ceremony’s standing arrangements.

Designing your Florals Sasha Johns would love to design your wedding floral arrangements. To work with her, visit amazingflowers.florist or call 205-669-7061. Amazing Flowers and Occasions is located at 102 S Main Street, Columbiana, AL 35051. It is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and on Saturday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

The

Ceremony

When Roderick’s mother passed away, the couple took time to grieve and heal before getting engaged and planning their wedding. Sasha helped the couple honor Roderick’s mother by reserving a seat adorned with flowers at the ceremony.

The

Reception

The floral arch from the ceremony was moved to the reception and matched the cake table's floral arrangements.

Ken Shaia–the fourth generation of his family to run the business–prides himself on serving the community through Shaia’s impeccable style and quality of clothing and shoes. With 101 years in the business, Shaia’s has become nationally renowned for both American and international brands that showcase distinct aesthetic taste– worthy to be in a customer’s wardrobe for years. Here, international model Felipe Zarate presents Shaia’s attire for grooms in every season of engagements and weddings. Photos by Becky Stayner Styling by Fonda Shaia

Felipe is dressed in a Brunello Cucinelli shirt and vest with PT01 pants and a backpack from Eleventy.

The engagement shoot Ken recommends dressing either business casual or professional for the engagement shoot–a sports shirt, sports coat and trousers make the perfect outfit for the occasion. For months with varying temperatures, a thin sweater or shirt paired with a sports vest suits any figure nicely.

Felipe is wearing a Mauro Blasi sports coat, Current Elliott jeans, Di Bianca shoes and a Canali shirt. To accessorize, he is wearing a Meg Spivey bracelet and a Bigi pocket square. 50 Spring 2024

Felipe paired a leather shirt jacket by Monto with a sweater from the brand, Maurizio Baldassari.

Felipe is seen wearing a hoodie and pants by Eleventy, a knit shirt by Brunello Cucinelli and a hat by Isaia.

The bachelor party

Most gentlemen tend to dress in a muted palette, accentuating their outfit’s character for events with “the guys.”

Pictured are shoes from Rubirosa.

To create this look, stylist Fonda Shaia paired a coat from Isaia, tie from Zegna, pants from PT01 and a shirt from Isaia.

The rehearsal dinner One might choose a tie, sports coat and slacks instead of matching suit pants as a versatile option that can be dressed down after the affair.

The Wedding

With any traditional wedding, a timeless black and white tuxedo is always a wonderful choice. Felipe is wearing a peak-lapel tuxedo jacket, bow tie and flat-front shirt.

Both the tuxedo and shirt are from Isaia, and the tie is from Bigi.

Olexa's

Diane Olexa’s love for beautiful pastry art grew as she did–watching her mother bake. At only age 23, Diane created her first-ever wedding cake for her college roommate in 1993. She started out creating one or two wedding cakes a week. She began creating cakes for her friends and her loved ones’ weddings, and in 1996, she extended her business to include event catering with her mother’s expertise to officially create the Olexa’s brand. Eight years later, Olexa’s following accumulated so much that Diane decided to open the business’s first brick and mortar in 2004 in quaint Mountain Brook Village. A 30-year veteran of the wedding industry, Diane says this business is special because of the memories she’s able to help create for her customers. Olexa’s today creates upwards of 200 birthday and wedding cakes a week, all while catering events and operating its intimate dining setting for guests six days a week. Here, she gives her thoughts on one of her favorite events at Olexa’s Catering, Cafe and Cakes–a romantic rehearsal dinner for her friends, Kinsey and Anderson Gore. PHOTOS BY SIDNEY SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY & CONTRIBUTED

54 Spring 2024

Memories intoMeals Diane and mother-of-the-groom, Abby Gore, have been family friends since college. As Abby was planning the rehearsal dinner for her son, Anderson, she mentioned to Diane that Anderson loves chicken with alfredo sauce. Diane created the menu, incorporating Anderson’s favorite meal that added to the special night before the wedding.

Pictured is Diane Olexa and Anderson Gore.

Old World Feel An

The bride-to-be, Kinsey, had a long time dream of having her rehearsal dinner at Olexa’s. She wanted her guests to have that charming, old-world dining experience that the ambiance and decor at Olexa’s offers.

Working with Olexa's

Diane and the team at Olexa’s are always happy to help a bride and groom plan the wedding cake of their dreams, cater for their event or even host their loved ones in-house. To work with Diane, visit olexas.com or call 205871-2060 to schedule a consultation. Olexa’s is located at 2838 Culver Road. Rich in

Flavor & History In 2004, Diane moved her business into the former Rue de Provence restaurant space off of Culver Road because of the space’s European aspects. She redesigned the majority of the color palette, but chose to leave a lot of the interior decor to create such ambiance that helped her customers feel as though they were dining in a European courtyard.

60 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Spencer and I met at Sloss Fest in 2018 through a mutual friend, and we hit it off right away. THE PROPOSAL Spencer decided to propose to me in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, so as to include my grandparents, who live in that area. We had been hiking all day, and he waited until we were on the last hike of the day to propose to me at Clingmans Dome around sunset.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I loved my wedding dress! I wanted something unique and vintage looking. I went to The White Room, thinking I was going to choose a boho lace gown. Instead, I fell in love with my dress the minute we saw it. My mom was the person who encouraged me to try it on, and that definitely will be a memory I will always cherish. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Pick a couple of elements that you feel are “must-haves’ in your wedding (think of your favorite ideas) and then be flexible about the rest. I had an amazing planner and a concept of what I wanted. My wedding turned out better than I could have ever dreamed it would. My big focuses were the band, disco ball decor, boho flowers and my amazing photographer.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Philip and I were set up through my best friend’s dad, who I trust immensely, and who played golf with Philip. After he’d given my number to him and told me Philip was going to call me, I looked Philip up on Instagram (like any single girl would do). We had a mutual friend that I trust dearly because she is my sister’s best friend. So, I felt comfortable reaching out to ask her how well she knew him and anything else she could tell me. It turns out, Philip is her brother! So, Philip is my sister’s best friend’s brother! Our paths had never crossed before, so out of the gate, our story felt ordained. THE PROPOSAL Early on in our relationship, Philip started calling me Pooh Bear. We quickly became “The Pooh Bears” amongst family and friends. On a beautiful Sunday morning before attending church, he said we should have a cup of coffee at his house on his screened-in porch. When I stepped outside, he handed me a coffee mug that felt empty. He told me to look inside the cup, and low and behold, the ring was in it. On the table next to him was a cake with a huge Pooh Bear on it that said, “Will you marry me?” WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I knew I wanted something classic and elegant but with a little bit of drama. I went to Atlanta with my mom and sisters to Mandi Jackson Bridal. I tried on a few other dresses before I tried mine on, but when I did, I just knew it was everything I was looking for in a dress. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Try not to be so rigid with your expectations on the details. Focus on the ceremony, vows and the celebration. Ultimately, nothing else really matters other than getting to walk away with your husband. MountainBrookMagazine.com 63

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We are high school sweethearts. We met at Mountain Brook High School and continued dating through our college years at the University of Alabama. THE PROPOSAL One of our first dates was at Joseph’s family’s farm. We went there for dinner one night, and he proposed in front of the barn, which was the place where we took one of our first pictures together.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I chose a wedding dress that in my opinion was very different than the norm. I wanted something that felt organic since the wedding was outside and at the lake. I coordinated many of my wedding’s details to the pattern of my dress! WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Don’t stress if something small goes wrong. It will be okay! No one really notices things that may go wrong besides you. Focus on the reason why you’re getting married instead.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Scott and I grew up down the street from each other on Westbury Road and Spring Valley Road before finally meeting at Mountain Brook Junior High in 2010. We became close friends throughout junior high and high school until we started dating right before graduating from Mountain Brook High School in 2015. Actually, 18 members of our wedding party also grew up in Mountain Brook and graduated with us in 2015. THE PROPOSAL On my 25th birthday, Scott asked me to be his wife! He proposed at The Club, which overlooks Birmingham, where we met and currently live. It was my best birthday yet! WEDDING DRESS DETAILS The deep-v-neckline, fitted bodice and fabric made me fall in love with my dress. When I put the dress on, I knew it was mine and did not try on another dress. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Let people help you. There are so many people willing to help with the big and small things, and you can’t do it all yourself.

Hayden + Wes APRIL 22, 2023 PHOTOS BY MEGHAN GRAY

68 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met at church in 2017 when we were both interning for the youth group. We grew up going to the same church but never really talked since Wes is two years older than me. Fast forward five years, and our boss from our internship married us at Canterbury United Methodist Church. THE PROPOSAL We got engaged in Oxford, Mississippi, in front of the Lyceum. I went to school at Ole Miss, and that campus has always been a special place for me. I was there for a music and art festival called “Double Decker,” and Wes surprised me on his way to a baseball game for the sweetest proposal ever. I did not see it coming at all.

WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I spontaneously made an appointment at Anne Barge in Atlanta while visiting family. I went in, not expecting to buy a dress. I just wanted to try a few on to see what I liked and what looked good. To my surprise, I used the skirt and fabric of the very first dress I tried on. With a little bit of help from the Anne Barge team, we designed the dress of my dreams from there. There were so many details I wanted to go into my dress, and somehow, Anne Barge was able to make all of them happen. The bow, slit, pockets and jacquard fabric perfectly complemented each other. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE If I could give a bride-to-be any piece of advice, it would be to take mental pictures throughout the entire wedding-planning process, especially on the wedding day. These moments will be captured by so many people, but those are all taken from their point of view. I think it’s important to remember to take mental pictures from your point of view. Mary Chapman + Zach APRIL 22, 2023 PHOTOS BY ERIC AND JAMIE PHOTOGRAPHY

72 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Zach and I met through an online dating app. I was apprehensive about this, but I had a handful of friends who had great success with this app. So, I thought I would try it out. Zach’s personality immediately stood out, and I knew from our first date that he was such a perfect match for me.

the details Ceremony Venue: Church in the Pines at Children’s Harbor Reception Venue: Willow Point Country Club Wedding Planner/Day Of Coordinator: Handley Breaux Designs Florist: Marigold Designs Caterer: Willow Point Country Club Cake: Barb’s Cakes Wedding Dress: Ivory and White Bridal Boutique Bridesmaid Dresses: Bella Bridesmaids Bridal Hair/ Makeup: Irrelephant Groom’s Attire: Mobley and Sons Stationery: Annabelle’s DJ/Wedding Band: The Main Attraction Transportation: Rare Transportation Wedding Night Accommodations: The Lodge at Cocktail Slough

THE PROPOSAL The weekend of my birthday, Zach had his mom and a few friends from Tampa come into town for a fun weekend of celebrations. Zach and I went out to dinner on a Saturday at one of our favorite restaurants, Dyron’s. After dinner, he said we were going to have cake with my parents, which was not abnormal for us since my parents live so close. As we got out of the car and walked toward my parents’ front yard, I turned around, and Zach was on one knee. It was so special that he proposed at the house I grew up in. All of our friends and family were there to celebrate. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS My wedding dress was not what I thought I would have ever picked. I must give props to Ivory and White for showing me some different options because the moment I put it on, I was in love. I loved how classic but different the fabric was. I also loved that after the ceremony, I was able to remove the wrap. It became nearly a new dress. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE My advice would be to soak up the engagement and enjoy every moment. Planning can be so stressful, but it is all so worth it. It goes by so quickly! Bumps in the road will happen, but it will all work out perfectly.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Zach and I met my freshman year at Auburn at a party. I was playing with a cute black lab at the party, and it turned out to be Nibbles, Zach’s dog. We like to joke that she introduced us. THE PROPOSAL Zach proposed on a beach trip in Orange Beach with my family. He pretended he left something on the beach and needed me to help him find it. Even though it was pitch black dark, I went along with it and was so surprised when he got down on one knee. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS My wedding dress was made by Heidi Elnora, using pieces of my mom’s wedding dress. It’s super special because I am one of four girls, and the three of us who have gotten married have all had our own style dress while still using the lace and fabric from our mom’s dress. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE Enjoy it, and don’t stress about the details! Pick things you love, and the day will be perfect!

76 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Jack and I both grew up in Mountain Brook and went to school together. We were always friends, but we didn’t start dating until we were in college at Auburn University.

the details Ceremony Venue: Mountain Brook Baptist Church Reception Venue: Mountain Brook Club Wedding Planner/Day Of Coordinator: Jane Dickens Events Florist: Mary Donald Caterer: Mountain Brook Club Cake: Magic Muffins Wedding Dress: The Bride Room Bridesmaid Dresses: Bella Bridesmaids Bridal Hair/Makeup: Louise Robertson Groom’s Attire: Mr. Burch Formal Wear Stationery: Please Reply DJ/Wedding Band: Big Night Dynamite Transportation: Thrasher Brothers Wedding Night Accommodations: The Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook

THE PROPOSAL Aside from our wedding day of course, this was the happiest day of my life! Jack and I live in Texas now, and we were back home for Easter. We had plans to eat with his family that night, so he brought me back to his house so that we could ride with everyone to dinner (or so I thought). When we got to his house, he led me down the side path to the backyard, and I finally started to catch on. He got down on one knee and proposed! All of our family was there, and our friends came later to celebrate! WEDDING DRESS DETAILS I ended up looking for dresses in Nashville because my grandmothers live there, and I wanted them to be part of the experience. When I tried on my dress, it was a feeling of comfort and being able to see myself wear that dress down the aisle. My mom also started sobbing as soon as I walked out, so that was a good sign. After trying a veil on with it, I knew that was the dress for me. Ultimately, it was less of the details and more of the feeling for why I chose my wedding dress. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE It may seem stressful at times, but try to enjoy every minute of it. Time goes by so fast!

78 Spring 2024

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met on Bumble. I grew up here in Mountain Brook, and Randall is originally from Wisconsin and lived all over the country before moving to Birmingham for the CRNA program at Samford University. Soon into his time here, Randall and I matched, met and fell in love. Luckily, he fell in love with Birmingham, too, and we have made it our new home together.

the details Ceremony Venue: Cathedral Church of the Advent Reception Venue: The Country Club of Birmingham Wedding Planner/Day Of Coordinator: Brittany Lott Florist: Buffy Hargett and Amanda Ransom Caterer: The Country Club of Birmingham Cake: Magic Muffins Wedding Dress: Carriage House Weddings Bridal Hair/Makeup: MacKenzie Stewart Groom’s Attire: The Black Tux and Brackish Stationery: Please Reply DJ/Wedding Band: The Fountain Players Transportation: Dream Drives BHM and Rare Transportation Wedding Night Accommodations: The Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook

THE PROPOSAL Randall planned a trip for us to go back to Asheville, North Carolina, where we had our first official getaway together. We went to Chimney Rock and hiked my favorite trail. Randall seemed to be walking much slower than normal and taking breaks for pictures. Unbeknownst to me, he had coordinated for both our families to be there at the top of the mountain for the proposal and was trying to give them time to make it there! When we finally approached the top, I saw his mom and began to clue in. Randall dropped to his knee and asked me to marry him. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS The wedding dress I chose was the very first I tried on. It was a beautiful combination of traditionalism, elegance and simplicity, while still having the fun and unique tie detail at the front. I loved the silhouette and the buttons all the way down the back. The bridal consultants at Carriage House Weddings were so kind and helpful and made the process fun. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE The most helpful tip given to me was not to get too caught up in the little details because inevitably, something will fall through or not go as planned. However, all will be perfect because you get to marry the love of your life.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met in 2019 at Struts in Jacksonville, Alabama. Grayson and I had mutual friends that were out that night, and he was sitting, eating alone. Me being myself went up to him and stole his food. It all started with a fry. Then, the rest was history. We have been together for five years now; he is truly my dream guy, and what I had always prayed for in a future partner. THE PROPOSAL After four years of being together, I was really pushing to get engaged. I knew I wanted to spend forever with him, and I just wanted it to happen right then. In May, Grayson told me weeks before that we were to attend a company function and needed to dress for the occasion. Little did I know he had the proposal of my dreams set up at my parent’s farm– our favorite place in the world. WEDDING DRESS DETAILS The wedding dress was something I have dreamed about since I was a little girl. My mom and grandmother got to attend this special day with me. I never really knew exactly what type of dress I would wear when we arrived at Bridal by Lori. It was the first dress we saw, and it had just arrived that day. The second I put the dress on and came out, we all knew it was the one. WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE We found the best wedding planner hands-down, Jackie Frontiero. She made the process so easy and took all the stress off us. Between working with Jackie, my mom and forming a team of excellent vendors, wedding planning went amazingly. A year of planning may seem like a long time, but with the right people, it will fly by. Make sure to enjoy every moment of it!

‘Tis the season for weddings and romance! Whether you are getting engaged, planning a bridesmaids’ getaway, celebrating your own nuptials or marking an anniversary, there is a special destination for everyone.

HIT THE ROAD

PROPOSAL LOCATIONS Setting the tone for an engagement might often start with where the groom proposes to the bride. It could be where the couple had their first date or some other meaningful location—like the family ranch in Montana, where a groom hung the engagement ring on a nail on a tree, where he and his beloved enjoyed picnics. Many resort destinations relish being a part of a couple’s romantic future and offer whole proposal packages:

Photo by Mari-on Birgan The Lodge at Sea Island is a Forbes five-star, English-style country manor resort in Georgia that provides the perfect backdrop to any proposal (we’re thinking the rose petal bath butler service would be pretty nice)! As a special bonus, Sea Island invites previous honeymooners to save their receipts, and on the anniversary of their trip, pay the original rate on the first day of their stay. seaisland.com Amanyara, in the heart of an 18,000-acre nature reserve in Turks and Caicos, makes for a lush tropical setting, where the staff will arrange a “WILL YOU MARRY ME” sign in LED lights as you enjoy a private dinner in a secluded cove. The resort’s pavilions are situated in coastal vegetation and overlook the beaches of Northwest Point Marine Preserve—truly memorable! aman.com

BRIDESMAID & GROOMSMEN GETAWAYS After the proposal, the bride and groom will each secure their squad of bridesmaids and groomsmen, who will play a major part of the big day. Make plans to get away with these best friends and family for some serious memory-making. Hilton Head Health—The bride and her attendants can take a break from the hectic planning with a trip to coastal South Carolina for one of the destination’s wellness retreats, which includes spa time, self-care workshops, yoga and more. hhhealth.com Hollywood Farms—Gather your groomsmen and head to Hollywood Farms in Jeffersonville, Georgia, for a true sportsman’s getaway. Do a buyout of the antebellum site, or pick a weekend when Hollywood Farms is hosting a Fausti Shooting School or a bespoke quail or woodcock hunt. Chef Scottie Johnson will make every meal memorable, while the bourbon flows. hollywoodfarmsga.com

HIT THE ROAD

Andiamo Lodge—Just a short drive North from Birmingham to Mentone, Alabama, is Andiamo Lodge, a well-curated destination for those looking for a honeymoon destination closer to home. Owner Colleen Duffley dubs this a ‘lux-lodge’ experience, where attention to detail (think Frette linens and intimate concierge service) comes standard. andiamolodge.com

HONEYMOON SPOTS

Half-Mile Farm—This sister property to the venerable Old Edwards Inn in Highlands offers a quieter respite in the Western North Carolina mountains. While there is always a lot going on in this area, the romance of this 14-acre, guests-only property means you might never stray far. oldedwardshospitality.com The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection— For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, book a cruise on one of the most jaw-dropping hotels on the sea. ritzcarltonyachtcollection.com

His & Hers—A honeymoon can be the perfect time to set the tone for how a couple likes to travel. Fork & Leaf Travel, Inc. Owner and Certified Travel Associate Jenn Nix shared a unique trip she planned for a couple who like very different things for vacation. The couple both wanted a Costa Rican honeymoon. He wanted fly-fishing in the mountains, while she craved luxe spa time on the beach. Jenn booked them in a private residence near pristine fishing for the first half of the trip and then at the adults-only Jardin del Eden Boutique Hotel in Tamarindo for the second half. Suffices to say, both the bride and groom got everything they wanted from this vacation. forkandleaftravel.com jardindeleden.com The Blended Family Honeymoon— For those couples looking to include members of the wedding party in their honeymoon plans, Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod makes an ideal destination. Plan a private clambake on the 25-acre estate, or take the group whale-watching. The Inn’s Kids Crew program offers tons of activities for the younger crowd, while the adults engage in some coveted one-on-one time. chathambarsinn.com

Get Outdoors

Jemison Park I love visiting both Jemison Park and Shades Creek, catching fish and crawfish. It’s fun to try and spot alligator snapping turtles.

Eat Local

Fellowship in Community

Community Night and The Holiday Parade Community Night was a great experience. It was a fun night to meet the police and firefighters that serve our city so well. Huston loved dunking Officer Ro in the dunk tank. My family also looks forward to the Mountain Brook Holiday Parade each year.

A Mountain Brook Entrepreneur

Katrina Porter Designs I am the owner and principal designer of Katrina Porter Designs, an interior design studio located right here in Mountain Brook. Katrina Porter Designs is best known for the dramatic transformations of the spaces in which homeowners entrust to me. I specialize in high-end kitchen and bathroom renovation design, and I am committed to providing exceptional design solutions for my clients.

Making Memories

The Sweet 16 Brad and I have been married for 16 years. Our first date was at Surin in Crestline. Every bit of crab angels is a reminder of that date!

104 Spring 2024

A Taste of Mountain Brook Mountain Brook has so many wonderful eateries, so I’ve listed a few of my favorite meals from some of the best spots in town. Nothing beats a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich cooked by Ms. Vicky and a cherry Coke at Gilchrist. For lunch, a Ceasar salad from Craft’s with hot chicken bites is my go-to. For an afternoon snack or dessert, I am partial to a rocky road ice cream cone from Mountain Brook Creamery. Rounding out dinner, my favorite entree is a large, ham, pineapple, onion and mushroom pizza from Davenport’s Pizza Palace.
