I

am not a teacher, but I come from a long line of educators and school volunteers.

My mom is a media specialist after spending years in the classroom.

My great grandfather was a college professor.

My paternal grandfather served on my hometown’s board of education for years, and my maternal grandfather regularly read to at-risk students at school.

To be fair, I did spend a semester or two teaching news writing and reporting while a graduate student at the University of Alabama. It was just long enough convince myself teaching may be in my blood, but it’s not my calling.

I do have a tremendous amount of respect for educators, so I am excited to celebrate some of our local teachers and counselors in this month’s issue of Shelby Living. We check in with educators who have returned to their

alma maters to mold a new generation of students.

I was amazed at how many teachers are back at their old schools.

We received the names of more than 55 teachers from across the county.

We had such a good response that we plan to make this an annual feature that coincides with our Back to School special section.

I hope you enjoy learning more about some of the people who are molding Shelby County’s future generation of leaders, workers and families.

With school starting back this month, I would like to wish all of our educators and students a very happy and productive school year. l

H

ave you seen the Hump Day commercials? A camel walking through an office asks “What is today?” until someone says, “It’s Hump Day.” While the memorable TV spot is played on Wednesdays— the jest of the message is you can now wind down to the weekend and Lisa Phillips, owner of SimpleWorks, enjoy life. What would happen if you had a simple mind shift and developed the habit of making “hump day” your day to maximize every minute of the day, to “bust” it out? Just the sound of “Bust Your Hump Day” gives you energy and puts you into overdrive.

It’s a great example of the simple principle of “what you think about, you bring about.”

It’s the little things. When you spend your day tackling the priorities, you’re usually left with no time for the little things that are bugging you. This causes stress. Your BYHD is the day to tackle your priorities and do the less urgent, yet equally, important things that need to be accomplished.

Get the whole family involved. More is caught than is taught. Your habits and actions will rub off on coworkers and family members.

Change the day. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to “bust it out” on Wednesday—then pick another day to push yourself to get a ton done. Don’t allow excuses.

Create a habit. The more you talk about BYHD, the easier it becomes to go to bed exhausted in victory because you crossed off a million things on that never-ending “to do” list.

It’s merely a choice—a choice of discipline that you decide for yourself to use a day to catch up on all those loose ends that you have been putting off. When you think, talk and hear “time management,” it really has nothing to do with time at all. It has to do with “priority management.” Only you can decide what a priority is for you, your family and your career.

Take a BYHD mentality to work with you every Wednesday.

Let’s petition for an updated version of the commercial. By adding two simple words to the camel’s question, imagine how fast the world could get on board with the mental mind shift of “Bust Your Hump Day.” It’s that simple.l

Narkates takes the ‘national’ stage

RMS teachers reunite for annual luncheon A group of teachers and staff from Riverchase Middle School, who began working together in the late 70’s and early 80’s, held their most recent luncheon at Greystone Country Club on May 28th. Members of the group have been meeting informally on a yearly basis since they began retiring in 1993 and when some faculty and staff moved to the new Oak Mountain Middle School. The group now has 50 members who have retired from either Riverchase or Oak Mountain Middle, with two new members retiring this year.

Thirteen-year-old Helena resident Jordan Narkates recently sang the National Anthem in front of thousands of spectators at a Birmingham Barons game at Regions Field.

Jordan was chosen from a pool of “hundreds” for this opportunity, his mother Missy explained.

“You walk into the stadium and they give you a number,” Jordan said of the auditions in which hopefuls are asked to perform the National Anthem in front of each other and judges without any musical accompaniment. “You can go off key really easily when you’re not using a karaoke track.”

But neither the auditions nor the real performance fazed the 13-year-old. “At the game, you can’t see all the people,” Narkates said, adding his show choir competitions in front of judges are far more nerve-wracking. Jordan, 13, is a member of the Helena Middle School choir and the Birmingham Boys Choir.

UM golfer takes State Amateur title SCBOE honors teachers Two teachers were honored by the Board of Education at their June 5 meeting as First Year Teachers of the Year. Richard Conte, a sixth grade teacher at Calera Middle School, and Abigail Brock, a second grade teacher at Forest Oaks Elementary School, were both honored as recipients of the award.

Ricardo Conte, who teaches both Science and Social Studies, was praised as being an exceptional first year teacher with a great ability to connect with his students. Conte is the school’s first soccer coach and helped produce the school’s first news broadcast.

Brock was also praised by her principal, Dr. Resia Brooks, as an outstanding first year teacher, who is very focused and deliberate in her work. Brooks said she has shared Brock’s lesson plans and her weekly newsletter with experienced teachers.

University of Montevallo golfer Elaine Wood has had quite an impressive spring.

The rising sophomore has increased her resume quite a bit over the last few months, taking home Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week for March 13.

Wood, a Spanish Fort native, was also named PBC Freshman of the Year, helped the Falcons finish second in the conference golf tournament and was selected for the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament, where she finished 14th.

Her latest feat? Capturing the 2014 Alabama State Women’s Amateur Championship, held June 20 in Tuscaloosa.

John Michael O’Toole beat just about everything in his path at the 2014 Greystone Inviational, including the field, the course — even the weather. On the final day, the Pinson native and University of Cincinnati golfer shot 7-under par for the round to go 13-under for the week. He enjoyed quite a week, sinking a hole-inone on Hole 14 and following up with an eagle on 15 to finish with 69 on June 19, the opening day of the tournament.

Drew Czuchry of Alpharetta, Ga., came in second n the tournament at Greystone Golf and Country Club. Former Spain Park golfer Robby Prater came home in a tie for 16th, finishing 1-under for the round and even for the tournament. Fellow Jaguar alumni Conner Pratt finished in a tie for 33rd, at 5-over on the tournament, but 2-under for the day.

GLC installs officers The Greystone Ladies Club installed new officers during a May 14 luncheon at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.

Beatty named Young Life area director John Beatty has joined Shelby County Young Life as the new area director.

A native of Marietta, Ga., Beatty has spent the past three years as a staff associate in the Young Life Perimeter North area, which serves four northern Atlanta suburbs.

He will be joined in Birmingham by his wife, Jessica, who has led with him the last two years at the Marist School.

“These three years have prepared me for the role that’s now before me,” Beatty said. “Jessica and I are so excited to follow the Lord’s will for our life and continue serving in the mission of Young Life.”

Jefferson State President retires After serving 35 years as president, Dr. Judy Merritt retired from Jefferson State Community College on June 30.

“Throughout her 50-year career, Judy Merritt has been an incredible leader who has touched countless lives,” said Jefferson State Dean of Campus Development and Campus/Legal Services Keith Brown. “She has devoted her life to making a difference in our community and improving the lives of others.”

Merritt was appointed president of Jefferson State Community College in 1979 by Governor Merritt Fob James. This appointment marked the first time a woman had been named president of a community college in Alabama.

Under her leadership, Jefferson State has grown both geographically and in the number of students served. When Merritt became president at Jefferson State, the college consisted of one campus located in the eastern area of Jefferson County.

Through her vision and ability to form partnerships, Jefferson State now has campuses in four counties, serves approximately 15,000 students per year, and is a leader in education in Alabama and beyond.

“M

y first time to attend an Alabama football game was as a freshman law student in 1964,” Gerald Waldrop

recalls.

Waldrop, a Helena resident, kept every ticket stub from each game attended through the years since and has “never thrown one away since September 19, 1964.” His sports memorabilia collection is mighty to behold, but let’s say upfront that these valuable items reside in a safe deposit box in the bank.

“I’ve always liked Alabama football and have attended almost every game since college. It’s about more than the game, though; it’s the enjoyment of tailgating with children and friends,” he said.

“Coach Bear Bryant was the coach when I was in college, of course. Each year since ‘58 his teams had improved. He won three National Championships in a five-year period, but in 1969/70 had the worst year in his tenure as coach.”

Waldrop was in the stands in September 1970 when Alabama lost to Southern Cal 21-42. Southern Cal’s player Sam Cunningham—they called him Sam Bam—went running by for another touchdown

and Coach Bryant, who was smoking his signature Chesterfield cigarette, threw it on the ground and shouted a few choice words.

Waldrop went down and asked the security guard to hand the discarded cigarette butt to him. At the time, Alabama had no black players. “Bryant understood he had to start recruiting blacks to win; this was in the time of George Wallace, and some people say Bryant intentionally scheduled Southern Cal to make that point,” Waldrop said.

Waldrop has tickets from many milestone games, for example: • November 28, 1981 when Bryant became the all-time winningest FBS coach with his 315th career victory.

• The Mammoth Punt game lost to Auburn 17-16 in 1972.

• Alabama versus Georgia at Grant Field in Atlanta in 1964.

Coach Bryant had to wear a helmet for protection from the whiskey and beer bottles being thrown at him.

• The 1971 Southern Cal game that started the Alabama winning streak of the next decade.

Waldrop shared that he feels privileged to have the unique experience of seeing Hank Aaron break Babe Ruth’s record in Atlanta on April 8, 1974, seeing Mark McGwire get thrown out of a game in San Francisco and, as a small boy, seeing Babe Ruth in person walking on Miami Beach.

Waldrop also has souvenirs from his first college homecoming when he invited his wife, Callie, to be his date. Together they have since taught college, shared his experiences in the Alabama Legislature from 1970-78; been active in Kiwanis International and traveled the world together. That is, when not tailgating at ​ Crimson Tide football games. l August 2014 | 13

T

he Shelby County Arts Council invites you to its first ever Pottery Collective exhibit on Aug. 3.

The Pottery Collective that calls the SCAC studios home is a unique group of artists from all over the area, each with their own unique sense of style. These artists work together in a tight-knit group to support one another and keep their love for pottery alive.

Along with making art together, the artists also show at exhibits, sell their pieces and teach classes.

Ceramic arts is such a diverse art form in that it can range from functional pieces, to work that is more aesthetically pleasing rather than functional. In creating what they love, the Pottery Collective has stumbled up on a huge gift market as well as a fine arts market.

Artists featured in the Pottery Collective show include Donna Lee Blankenship, Stephanie Dikis, Marsha Burnham, Candye Lundy, Robin Rosser,

Susan Gordon, Nita Terrell and Sandra Annonio.

Each of the artists began or developed her ceramic career by taking or teaching classes at the Shelby County Arts Council.

“It’s a privilege to be part of such a talented group of people who are willing to share their knowledge to help me grow as an artist,” Annonio said. “With the support we have shown each other, I feel that we have grown from mere hobbyists to serious artists. Whether it’s helping someone with an upcoming show or teaching someone about a new glaze, we really have transformed into a little family.”

An opening reception will be held for the SCAC Pottery Collective exhibit on Sunday, Aug. 3 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Shelby County Arts Council gallery space, 115 Mildred Street, Columbiana.

Admission is free and complimentary refreshments will be available.

T

he opening of Helena High School means more than a new building or team – it’s something the entire county can root for.

“It will give the students a sense of community they haven’t had before and help them identify with the community,” says Helena Mayor Mark Hall. “This is the piece of the puzzle we have been missing for so many years.”

About 1,000 students from Pelham High School, graduates of Helena Middle School and others from around the county will become Huskies – with silver, black and bright blue as their colors – at the new Helena High School Aug. 7.

“It’s going to be absolutely phenomenal for students who live here in Helena,” Hall says. “I’m pleased we finally are able to open the doors of the new high school.”

The students aren’t the only ones expected to feel the impact of the new school, though.

“It will bring economic stimulus to the city itself,” Hall says. “We’re expecting the benefits to the surrounding businesses to be felt soon.”

One member of the community who is especially ready for the school to open for students is April Brand, Helena High School’s assistant principal. “The excitement in the community has been extremely high,” she says. “I’m ready to see that excitement in students’ faces.”

school’s design provides practical and aesthetic features.

“Some of the architectural touches speak to the industrial past of the Helena area,” Brand says.

Built on a former coalmine site, the approximately 220,000-square-foot school is also one of the only in the state with a built-in tornado shelter, which holds about 1,700 people.

Not only is the school safe and eye catching, but its academics and extracurricular activities are top-notch, as well.

Students interested in working in and learning about health sciences and therapeutic services can get handson experience through a partnership with Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedic.

“Doctors affiliated with Lemak will make class visits to talk with the students,” Brand says. “I’m really excited about seeing where that program goes in the coming years.”

They will have their choice of sports, including football, basketball, cross-country, volleyball, track and field, golf, tennis, soccer and baseball. There will also be a variety of clubs such as Peer Helpers and the Student Government August 2014 | 19

Association (SGA). “Our hope is that there will be something for each kid and that they will find somewhere to plug into,” Brand says.

While the entire building is top of the line, Brand’s favorite room in the school is the media center. “There’s wonderful, tall ceilings, and there’s a bright, open feel,” she says. “Students can form groups, study or use the research computer lab upstairs. It’s a welcoming space for kids to use.”

The only thing missing now from this long-awaited high school are the students.

“We’re doing our part to support and reinforce what’s already a tremendous community spirit,” Brand says. “We’re trying to bring all of that together and prepare the kids for the future.

“What we establish will be here indefinitely,” she continues. “We’re laying a foundation for the future. It will give the kids a lot of terrific opportunities.” l

Photos by JON GOERING illtop Montessori School, located in the Town of Mt Laurel, recently announced the design phase of a new addition that will house a community area and teaching kitchen.

Phase Three will begin construction in 2015 and be completed by 2016, according to a press release from the school. The community area and teaching kitchen will also be available as a venue for local businesses and residents of the North Shelby County area.

Hilltop Montessori, was gifted the land in the town of Mt Laurel by EBSCO Industries over a decade ago.

“As an independent academic institution, we are so grateful to EBSCO Industries,” said Head of School Michele Wilensky. “Phase Three is our way of giving back to the Mt Laurel community. This new extension of the building will be a wonderful ‘after hours’ resource.”

The school’s environmental education curriculum integrates a heavy emphasis on

nutrition, which is supplemented from the school’s expansive edible-gardening program and an on-site apiary. The new teaching kitchen will allow the school to serve lunches made from fresh, organic produce. John Milton

Oak Mountain High School John Milton teaches business and leadership classes at Oak Mountain High School, where he is also the senior class sponsor, SGA sponsor and Director of Operations for the football team. He was a student at OMHS from 19992002. He and his wife, Emily, have two children, William and Caroline.

Q: What do you love most about your job?

A: The students are the best part of this job. I really love getting the opportunity to teach them something.

More than that, I just love getting to see them have success and be excited about the next step. This is such a unique time in life and I feel so blessed to get to share that with students each year. Sponsoring the SGA has given me the opportunity to get to know students from their freshman year to their senior year and help them grow as leaders.

That is really rewarding as well. I wake up excited to go to work each day, and that is something I am so thankful for.

Q: What has teaching taught you?

A: The list is endless and ongoing. Patience, humility, kindness, appreciation, hard work … I absolutely cannot imagine another profession for me. You know there is a common theme out there that teachers don’t get paid well.

I might catch some flak for saying this, but I think teachers get paid great! That is not to say I would turn down a raise, but when I think about all the time I get to spend with my family and how much fun I have each day at work, I feel very blessed to be in this profession. Teaching has taught me to be thankful for all my blessings.

Q: If you could be present at any major historical event, what would it be and why?

A: Wow, any historical event? That is a tough question.

I would love to observe the American West while it was still frontier land. I’m sure I wouldn’t last very long in that environment, but it would be cool to see some of this country before it was populated and tamed.

Q: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

A: I probably would tell my 18-year-old self to get a haircut and not wear cheap seashell necklaces. I was actually looking through my high school photos last night with my wife and she could not stop laughing at some of my style choices. That being said, I wouldn’t give myself too much advice other than to enjoy these years because they go by so fast. l

Erin Agostini Spain Park High School

Erin Agostini is a counselor for juniors and seniors at Spain Park High School, where she is also the Spain Park Ambassadors sponsor. She and her husband Paul recently adopted a dog named Hazel, a 50-pound “lap dog” who loves to snuggle and play fetch, and hates doorbells and ceiling fans. Erin has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s of education in school counseling, both from Auburn University.

Q: When were you a student at your current school?

A: I was here the day the doors of Spain Park opened in 2001, and I was in the first class to complete all four years here, graduating in 2005.

Q: What is your fondest memory of your current school, either as a teacher or student?

A: The class of 2004 and my class, the class of 2005, were the very first students here. We knew that whatever we did during our time here had the potential to continue as tradition, so everything we did was intentional. It is so humbling and rewarding to come back as an employee and see so many of the events, cheers and traditions we started still around.

Q: What has teaching taught you?

A: It’s quite overwhelming, really, to be on this side of things and to see how much is expected of our teachers.

Yet, there have been so many times I’ve seen our teachers drop everything—no questions asked—to help a student.

It has made me appreciate my own teachers even more, and I often find myself wondering if I adequately expressed the depth of my gratitude while I was a student.

Q: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

A: Ten years from now, your honor chords will be stuffed in a box somewhere in your parents’ basement, and you won’t even remember your class rank or GPA. What you will remember, however, are the relationships you formed—classmates who were kind to you, friends who loved you enough to forgive you on bad days, and the teachers who taught you more than just the material you needed for a test. Ultimately, the people are what you remember most from high school… not the accolades.

Q: If you could meet any famous person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

A: Queen Esther, from the Bible. Her courage and resolve when placed in a difficult situation is incredibly inspiring to me. l

George Drake Calera High School

George Drake is a physical education teacher at Calera Middle School and head basketball coach at Calera High School, where he was a student from 2001-2005. He and his wife Erica welcomed a daughter, Noelle Olivia, to their family on June 21 of this year. After graduating from CHS, Drake attended Vandersbilt University on full scholarship to play basketball. After earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Vanderbilt, he earned a master’s degree in health education from UAB, where he also played basketball.

Q: What is your fondest memory of your current school, either as a teacher or student?

A: While I was finishing up my master’s degree at UAB, I was asked to come back to Calera and speak at graduation. I can never remember being so honored and nervous all at the same time. However, I accepted the opportunity and it was one of the best memories I have.

Playing in four straight high school state championship games was also a fond memory, if I could add another.

Q: What do you love most about your job?

A: The kids. My job is not predictable, there is always something new and every day I have an opportunity to help someone else.

Q: What has teaching taught you?

A: Even though your job title says teacher you still learn something new every day. So you will always be a student in some way or another.

Q: If you could be present at any major historical event, what would it be and why?

A: I would have loved to be present at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In 1992 the United States men’s Olympic basketball team, nicknamed the “Dream Team,” was the first American Olympic team to feature active NBA players. They won a gold medal against Croatia.

Q: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

A: Don’t etch out your life’s path in pen, use a pencil. I think a lot of self-motivated teenagers map out a blueprint of how their lives will go and how they will achieve their dreams. I think it is vital to make sure you accept that only God knows when and how you will reach those dreams.

When you accept and understand that important reality, you start to see things in perspective. l

Natalie Slaten

Oak Mountain Middle School Natalie Slaten is an eighth grade English Language Arts teacher at Oak Mountain Middle School, where she is also the seventh and eighth grade cheerleading sponsor.

She attended OMMS from 1998-2001. Slaten is a graduate of Auburn University, and her hobbies include watching Auburn sports, attending plays, taking dance classes and traveling with friends.

Q: Why did you want to go into education?

A: I went into education because of the impact my teachers had on me. They played such a vital role into creating the person that I am today, and I felt that it was my responsibly to pay it forward. Just the fact that I have the opportunity to be a part of developing and encouraging students to perform their best is very humbling.

Q: What is your fondest memory of your current school, either as a teacher or student?

A: Galas (school dances) were such a huge deal when I was student. Whenever I run into people that I graduated with, they always seem very jealous that I still get to attend galas. The fact that I now get to chaperone is pretty hilarious. I am always fighting the urge not to dance. I do however seem to lose that battle every time. I often find myself asking the DJ to play at least one *NSYNC song just so I can get out on the dance floor.

Q: What do you love most about your job?

A: I love that I wake up every morning happy to go work. The faculty and staff are some of the best people to spend the day with. They are willing to go above and beyond for not only their students, but also the community.

It is very comforting to be a part of something so rare.

Even though it may sound clichĂŠ, we truly are a family at OMMS. Q: If you could meet any famous person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

A: I would love to meet Walt Disney because he was the ultimate dreamer. It would be very interesting to get his thoughts on how his dream has developed into what it is now. l

Connie Nolen Pelham High School

Connie Nolen is an English teacher and chair of the English Department at Pelham High School. She is the Pelham Community Columnist for the Shelby County Reporter and the Pelham Reporter. She is also the vice-president of the Alabama Scholastic Press Association, a member of the RUMC Christian Writers and the Southern Christian Writers associations. She lives in Pelham and describes herself as “an avid reader, a writer, a mom, a community volunteer, a runner and an exerciser.”

Q: Why did you want to go into education?

A: I tutored kids in high school because they asked for my help. Later, in my college dorm, students came to my room for help. I never thought of myself as a teacher. I was an English and journalism major, but I felt there was something missing in my education. One of my college friends said, “You don’t know it, but you’re a teacher. People come to you because you explain material differently—so that they can understand it. You’re a teacher.”

So I added education to my majors—and that has made all the difference.

Q: When were you a student at your current school?

A: I went to PHS for six years. Riverchase Middle had not been built yet, so I was a sixth grader at Valley and then came to PHS for 7-12. Only a few classes spent six years here.

Q: What is your fondest memory of your current school, either as a teacher or student?

A: Graduation is an event that I love. At graduation, when I am hugging the grads and hearing their names called, I know they’re ready to launch into the world and I am so thrilled. I also love Write Night where PHS students come out to cheer on the arts and perform. The students generated the idea for this event over a decade ago. I was skeptical that the event could be a success.

Every year when 800-plus kids fill that auditorium cheering for original poetry, songs and performances, I am so thrilled that I was wrong—and that I listened to the kids!

When my oldest child was about to come to PHS, she had to come up after school her eighth grade year for a spring clinic.

After walking my daughter and her friends down to the gym, I started back to my classroom. Alone on the stairs, I looked up at the bulletin board and the Alma Mater was there. One line says “Through the halls of Pelham High School, I’ve experienced life.” I realized that I had bounded down these stairs as a seventh grade student, paused on them as a teacher nearing the end of pregnancies and now was about to begin climbing these stairs as a parent of PHS students. Yes, through the halls of Pelham High School, I have certainly experienced life. Keeping a daily communion with one place for so long, I dig deeper and I have a clarity about what I do and who I am. I am a teacher who connects children to the next path where their adult lives begin. l August 2014 | 29

Flip Side Watersports offers wakeboarding at Oak Mountain State Park

esidents of Shelby County don’t have to travel farther than Oak Mountain State Park to go wakeboarding this summer. Flip Side Watersports, located on Beaver Lake, opened its doors and cable to riders of all ages in mid-June.

“I love cable, I love wakeboarding and I got tired of driving six hours to go do it,” Flip Side Watersports co-owner Josh White said. “Out here I can have kids come from downtown 30 | ShelbyLiving.com

Birmingham. It just helps grow the sport as a whole.”

The park at Beaver Lake is one of only a handful of wakeboard cable parks in the country, and at 817 feet long, the cable is “the longest on this continent,” White said.

An electric motor pulls riders across the cable, and speed is controlled by an operator on the land.

“It’s very beginner friendly,” White said, noting a majority of the park’s riders have had little to no experience wakeboarding. “You progress very

quickly on this type of cable. We (instructors) can get out there on the dock and walk (beginners) through the steps of what they’re doing right and what they’re doing wrong.”

However, the cable park is not just for beginners. With a number of jumps and obstacles, it is great for advanced riders too. Several professional wakeboarders have already stopped by for a ride.

“We have quite a few sponsored riders coming through,” White said, naming Trever Maur, Matt Sims and Chris Armstrong. “The water is pretty calm, it’s butter water, wakeboarders love that.”

Flip Side Watersports is open everyday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and riders of all ages are welcome.

“We rent boards, lifejackets and helmets for all ages and sizes,” White said.

Riders can purchase cable time in hourly increments, two hours costs $25, four hours is $35 and an all-day pass is $45. t’s been a joy to launch the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Sports Performance program for students ages 7 to 18 this summer, incorporating the strength and training principles I used for 20 years with NCAA Division 1 athletes.

After our fun-filled summer season, our fall challenge is to not only work with clubs, schools and travel teams, but also to help individuals’ families get and stay healthy. Here’s what I hope area parents might consider as schools start: 1. You can help your child stay active.

Sports Performance principles are designed to help build young athletes’ skills and confidence.

Our aim is to help them truly enjoy physical activity. Establishing an active lifestyle now can benefit your child for a lifetime. Our year-round offerings are designed for athletes looking to excel in their sport, but also to offer a tailored fitness routine to children struggling with obesity.

2. You can help protect your athlete’s developing body. To help combat rising pediatric overuse injuries, sports specialists are employing training principles that maximize performance while minimizing injury risks.

Although your child’s coaches work hard to teach sport-specific skills, sports performance crosstraining expands those efforts with all-sport speed, strength and agility instruction. Such protective efforts should include proper jumping and landing techniques, too.

3. You can seek specialized instruction.

While working with college athletes, I customized each plan to their still-growing frames. One lineman’s workout differed from another, because development differs at all ages

and sport. That’s the same approach we’ll be offering for our Sports Performance program.

Whether your pitcher is working with weights or your soccer player seeks agility drills, their activities should be geared to their growth.

4. You can utilize excellent resources.

he Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington, nestled inconspicuously next to the Columbiana Public Library, seems an unlikely destination for international travelers, but the museum has played host to visitors from as far away as Japan, France and England.

The museum houses an impressive collection of over 1,000 artifacts belonging to the nation’s first president and his descendants. The collection began in the early 1980s with a small, silver teapot, according to the museum’s curator Donald Relyea.

“A lady brought a teapot (to Columbiana) to be

appraised. The appraiser knew that the teapot had belonged to a member of Martha Washington’s family. When he asked the lady about it, she said she was the sixth generation granddaughter of Martha Washington, and she also told him she had a whole houseful of artifacts and memorabilia.”

Karl Harrison, a Columbiana banker, philanthropist and “student of Washington,” purchased the teapot and many more artifacts from the woman, Charlotte Smith-Weaver, and the basis for the museum was born.

Relyea also considers himself an ardent admirer of Washington and his descendants.

“He was not only the first, but the best president we’ve ever had,” Relyea explained. “He’s one of the best Americans.”

Relyea’s favorite artifact in the museum is a French porcelain tea service—made in approximately 1774—which belonged to the family of Betty Washington Lewis, Washington’s only sister to live to adulthood.

Relyea once explained the set to a patron, who had an unlikely connection to the piece.

“When I got through telling her what I thought it was, she said she knew all of that because her family had sold it to the museum. And then she proceeded to tell me that when she was a little girl she used that (tea set) to play tea party,” Relyea recalled.

Among the other items visitors can view are a will, written in 1710 by Colonel Daniel Parke, grandfather of Martha Washington’s first husband, and furniture from the time period.

Martha Washington’s personal prayer book is also on display, as are George Washington’s “flip” glasses, which he used to drink a popular colonial concoction crafted from rum, beer, sugar and juice and heated with a hot iron until frothy.

The museum also contains letters from several early vice presidents as well as four of the first six presidents of the United States, including John Adams, James Madison, James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. If — Donald Relyea visitors find the ornate handwriting hard to follow, typed transcripts of the letters are available in a binder.

George Washington is not the only famous American represented in the museum—several items from the family of Robert E. Lee are also on display.

Lee has a tertiary relationship to Washington: Lee’s wife Mary Anna Custis Lee was the great granddaughter of Martha Washington and her first husband.

The museum contains a number of items from Lee’s family including a compass, several pieces of silver and a 1904 oil portrait of the general.

The museum also houses one of six existing Mathew Brady tintypes, taken just one week after Lee’s surrender, as well as a piece of red cloth from the flag that flew at Appomattox.

The museum goes to great lengths to preserve these valuable pieces of the past. The temperature is kept constant, at 69 to 70 degrees, and the humidity in the building is maintained at 58 percent. All documents are in sleeves that preserve the ink, and Relyea only keeps the lights on when visitors are in the building.

In addition, a state-of-the-art security system ensures that the valuable pieces are safe at all times.

“Our security system is very, very, very sensitive.

A bug going across the floor will set it off,” Relyea said.

Despite the plethora of treasures housed in the museum, it remains relatively unknown within the county.

“I’m sorry to say, it’s kind of a well-hidden secret,” explained the museum’s curator Donald Relyea. “Most people are pretty surprised (to find it).”

Many of the museum’s visitors are from the North and Midwest, who stop by on their way through the state.

“We probably have more people from out of Shelby County than from in Shelby County,” Relyea said. “People just don’t know we’re here.” l

“T

hank God for sending your team to our town.” The words in this simple note of gratitude are just the beginning of a story that began 13 years ago. The writer’s name is Selvin Rivas. His home is in Huehuetenango, a village in Guatemala located along the ridges of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, the highest mountain chain of Central America.

The letter was sent to Dr. Nolan Downs, a local pediatric dentist, who for over a decade now, has led an annual 1,300-mile pilgrimage from Briarwood Christian School to this remote area of Guatemala, a journey that Downs says “changes lives forever.”

It was here where he met 7-year-old Selvin, who

came to him with a big hug and a bad toothache. “I was locking up my equipment for the night,” Downs said, “when this little boy showed up and gave me a hug. I asked my translator what the youngster wanted and found out he wanted his tooth pulled because it was hurting him. He came back the next day and I took care of his aching tooth. He stayed around the rest of the trip and since then, Selvin has always been the first one to greet us when we arrive.

We found out he had been praying for a visit from a mission team for over four years.”

The Briarwood mission team is multifaceted, consisting of medical doctors, dentists, an eye clinic, a pharmacy, a children’s ministry, teacher training, spiritual counseling, a construction team and a

group of Briarwood junior and senior high school students.

“We want the students to have the experience of visiting a third world country and working in as many areas on the mission team as possible,” Downs explained.

That sentiment is echoed by students who go on the trip. For many, one visit is never enough.

Molly McKenzie, who completed her third mission trip this year, says she will always have the people of Guatemala as “part of my life.”

“It has been the most humbling experience I’ve ever had. They really don’t have anything, but the kids at the school where I worked are filled with so much joy. It is so amazing because you realize they have nothing, but they are so happy.

This has helped me to reexamine my priorities,” she said.

Whereas the main focus of the mission is to meet the many physical needs of this underserved population, equally important to the Briarwood team is providing healing for the soul. “People generally come from miles away and stand in line for hours waiting to be seen,” Downs said. “Each person on the team shares the gospel with them and gives them the opportunity for them to receive Christ as their Savior.”

While the Briarwood mission team is physically on the ground in Guatemala only for about 10 days a year, ministering to the needs of the people continues year-round. Thanks to the efforts of Downs, a — Molly McKenzie school bus was donated and shipped to a local elementary school in Huehuetenango with whom Briarwood Christian School partners. He has also set up a program where the Briarwood community can sponsor Guatemalan children.

“It has been the most humbling experience I’ve ever had.”

Arrington Collie has made the journey five times both as a Briarwood elementary teacher and while she was a student at Briarwood. Now, she encourages her students to collect school supplies to send to Guatemalan children. “This gives them a way to be involved in the mission, even though they can’t actually make the trip,” Arrington said.

For Arrington, the reason she leaves the comforts of her home to visit a third world country with no drinking water and sometimes suspect food, is simple.

“The Lord has blessed me with more than I need,” she said.

It is my duty to give back with love and to assure the people of Guatemala that the Lord loves them and to do my best to be the hands and the feet of Jesus, whether through medical care, building a new roof for the school or just giving a hug.”

For Downs, the reason is similar but just a bit more complex.

It actually goes back to when the story began 13 years ago, and Downs received a hug from a little boy with a toothache.

Presently, the pediatric dentist with the giving heart is himself waiting to learn the ending to the story.

“Sevin has become a part of my family. He is 20 now and such a fine young man,” Downs said. “My wife and I are hoping to bring him here to go to college. We are trying to secure his VISA, but so far haven’t made much progress. I would love to adopt him, if I can ever get him over here.” l August 2014 | 43

fter eight successful years, they’re at it again. St. Vincent’s One Nineteen kicked off its ninth annual Thyme to Cook for Kids cooking camp Monday, June 16. Children ages 6 to 9 gathered for a week of preparing and eating “made-fromscratch” meals taken from simple yet delicious recipes.

“At St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, we’re dedicated to serving the overall health and wellness of our community through a variety of offerings, including our cooking camps,” said Donna Sibley, wellness dietitian for St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.

“We had this whole kitchen, and had always had a desire to teach kids kitchen,” explained Sibley. Opening a cooking camp was “just natural,” she said.

Through the program, St. Vincent’s One Nineteen encourages kids to “discover new ways to cook old favorites, to investigate new foods,

and to explore healthy cooking for a lifetime of good eating.”

This summer’s themes for the camp were “From Farm to Table” and “Around America in Five Days.” Each session took place during a five-day workweek, between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Sessions targeted specific age groups, alternating 6to 9- year-olds and 10- to 12-year-olds.

Each day, the young participants cooked four meals consisting largely of fresh ingredients purchased from local farms. They learned how to prepare foods such as muffins, lasagna, roast chicken, tacos, vegetables, salads, various desserts and more.

They also learned where the food comes from.

“We compared farm eggs, learned about honey—their different colors and why they are different,” said Lauren Sineath, registered dietitian at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.

She then explained the different honey colors produced by plants in different regions.

extends further than culinary tactics and tips. The kids utilized science, mathematics and reading and listening comprehension, while strengthening direction-following and social skills.

“They’re learning to share and work as a team,” Sineath explained as busy little chefs bustled about the kitchen. Some stood together at tables, slicing fruits, vegetables and herbs for a Chilton County Peach Salsa. Others scrubbed dishes or prepared tortillas for catfish tacos.

Once the meals were prepared, the young chefs were given the opportunity to eat the finished products.

“We encourage them to try it,” Sineath said.

Many of the children had never before tasted the meals they learned to make. Blackberry jam, which many of the children had never tasted, was quickly a popular favorite at the cooking camp.

St. Vincent’s One Nineteen will also be hosting a Thyme for Teens Cooking Academy, which will offer to its teen participants more thorough cooking instruction and a greater acquaintance with the kitchen. This single session will take place July 28 – August 1, and will cost $195.

“By teaching kids and teens healthy eating habits and cooking skills early on, we’re empowering them to not only utilize these habits today, but for a lifetime,” Sibley said.

Steel City Pops’ new location takes unique twist on food truck

N

othing says summer more than enjoying a chilly popsicle outside with friends and family. To cool off at a uniquely inviting spot, community members can now make a stop at Jim Watkins’s new Steel City Pops location.

“It’s a nostalgia,” Watkins says about the treat’s appeal. “It makes you feel like you’re a kid again if you’re not.”

Across the street from the Lee Branch shopping center in the Vapor Thrift Shop parking lot at 5443 U.S. 280, the new site incorporates Steel City Pops’ industrial style with an Airstream trailer. “The Airstream is so awesome,” Watkins says. “I’ve always wanted to do something with one, and it turned out really cool.”

A lit pergola covers picnic tables and surrounding planters, creating a relaxing Southern environment. Visitors can either park and walk up to the trailer or use the drive-through to buy the $3 popsicles, which includes tax. “People can come and have good conversation while enjoying something delicious,” he says. “It’s just the simplicity of it.”

Watkins opened the new location on May 19, the company’s two-year anniversary, making it the fourth Steel City Pops in Birmingham. The new location gives a portion of its sales to Vapor Thrift Shop, which supports sports camps for impoverished countries. The company’s other spots donate the sales from their water bottles to build water and production wells in India and Africa.

The U.S. 280 Airstream is a more convenient spot for Watkins’s friends and family, he says. “I’ll hear people say they don’t get to our Homewood or Summit locations, so it’s nice to have something a little closer to where we live.”

His four sons also help out with the business, making it a family affair. “It’s like we’re on vacation when we’re together and working,” Watkins says.

But this wasn’t his only new store opening this summer. He brought Steel City Pops to Dallas, Texas, which was his first location outside of Alabama, and Fort Worth, Texas. “They’re big cities, and the weather’s similar,” says Watkins, who attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, for college. He has 65 to 70 employees across all of his stores during the summer season.

No matter the location, it’s Steel City Pops’ flavors that keep them busy, especially during warmer months.

Watkins and his team create the all-natural frozen treats at the Homewood location. They offer 20 flavors at a time – 10 fruity and 10 creamy – including avocado, blueberry basil, banana, cucumber lime, caramel, lemonade, sweet tea, watermelon, peanut butter, cherry sour cream and many more. All of the pops are gluten free, and the fruity flavors are vegan and dairy free.

“It’s an all-natural brain freeze,” Watkins says with a smile.

The menu changes four times a year – summer, fall, Christmas and the beginning of the year – but they also swap out a few flavors throughout the year. Some of the most popular pops are strawberry, blood orange, coffee, buttermilk and chocolate.

“It’s a happy business that continues to make people happy,” Watkins says.

Movement: The Best Investment for Your Health

What happens when ingenuity and productivity is counterproductive to our own health? Humans are constantly inventing new ideas and technology to solve their problems; the chair allowed us to rest, a desk allowed us to do work while in the chair, a computer allowed us to do that same work even faster. The human life has made a tremendous shift from one of manual labor and self-subsistence to a highly technologically driven society of desk jobs and digital entertainment. As wonderful as all of these innovations are, the truth is that our newfound sedentary nature could be killing us.

New research reports that spending more than 6 hours a day on your rear, 9.5 hours is the American average, increases risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression and even some types of cancer. When we make our living at a desk, what can be done to combat the detrimental effects of sitting? Simply put, go for a walk. NEAT or non-exercise activity thermogenesis is crucial to offset our tushtime. NEAT can be achieved through getting up from your desk at least every 20 minutes to take a simple walk or just an easy stretch.

Many office workers are diligent gym goers as well,

but studies show that our 45 to 60 minutes of exercise per day may not be enough to protect us from the increased health risks of sitting. So, what should we do? Simply put, MOVE MORE! Force yourself to take the stairs, choose the bike instead of the car, turn off the TV and get outside.

These are all easy to do, but hard to make a habit.

Incorporating movement into our daily routine is a small time commitment for a huge payoff.

One of my favorite quotes reads, “When you stop moving, you die,” as morbid as that sounds it is a necessary truth. As a chiropractor and biomechanics specialist my passion is the understanding of human movement, and enabling people to move

better and move more. In our clinic we educate our patients on why it is imperative to not only move, but to also move well. We like to think of everyone who comes through our door as an athlete, and an athlete’s most important asset is his or her body. So get out there and invest in your body by moving more and moving better, your life depends on it.
