events to host. In Pelham the fun and excitement continue with our new schools. This past fall we unveiled Pelham Ridge Elementary and redesigned Pelham Intermediate into Pelham Oaks, and as you read this the finishing touches to Pelham Park Middle School and the Pelham Recreation Center are underway. The growth doesn’t stop there. The city recently broke ground on the new Pelham Library to open in March 2018. Your children will have a first-class education balanced with the wonderful amenities located within our corporate

Pelham Palooza set for May 20 By BRIANA HARRIS / STAFF WRITER
T
he city of Pelham is gearing up to host the fifth annual Pelham Palooza on Saturday, May 20. The free event begins at 9 a.m. at the Pelham Civic Complex and continues into the night with the Just Show Up Show at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre. The Pelham Palooza began under the leadership of former Pelham Mayor Don Murphy in anticipation of the city’s 50th anniversary in 2014. Each year the celebration has expanded, entertaining thousands throughout Shelby County and abroad. Pelham Palooza has quickly become a signature Pelham event.
The 2016 Pelham Palooza/Just Show Up Show partnership drew more than
6,500 people to Pelham. This year 103.7’s free Just Show Up Show will feature Lukas Graham, Aaron Carter, Daniel Skye, Maggie Lindemann and MAX. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. “It’s a free, family-fun event that was created to celebrate our city,” said city administrator Paula Holly. During the day, the parking lot of the PCC will feature a bungee trampoline, carnival games, Home Depot’s Craft Area, funnel cakes, fried Oreos, magic acts and much more. Several food, arts and entertainment vendors will be set up inside of the civic complex also, and free ice skating will be offered at the ice arena.

ant to head out for a day of hiking, fishing and swimming? Or maybe you’d rather spend a cool summer evening seeing a big name band in Alabama’s largest outdoor theater? Whatever your interests, Pelham has a venue to match. The largest state park in Alabama, Oak Mountain State Park boasts 9,940 acres filled with lush forests and beautiful lakes and with more than 50 acres of trails,
there are plenty options for both biking and hiking from a short, one mile loop to an overnight excursion. Hiking isn’t the only option, either. Head to Flipside Watersports where you can try wake boarding, kneeboarding or tubing across 817 feet of cable at speeds up to 19 miles an hour on Beaver Lake. Visit injured native birds on the mend at the Alabama Wildlife Center and see resident animals on the Tree Top Nature Trail. Pop in next door to see exhibits at the Oak Mountain Interpretive center, where you can even hold one of the center’s special snakes. For more outdoor fun, head to the Pelham Racquet Club, which consists of 20 clay courts and five hard courts, all lit with tournament grade lighting. The Pelham Tennis Center, located in Pelham Community Park, has nine courts as well as a fiberglass backboard, great for perfecting your backhand. Grab a group of friends and play a round of golf at the beautiful Ballantrae Golf Club. The 18-hole course is set amid rolling hills and breathtaking views, and golf pros can help you get your game up to par with a lesson or clinic. For a more informal game, head to Southern Golf where you can play a round of mini golf or practice your swing at the batting cages. If bowling is your game, spend a day at Oak Mountian Lanes where you can enjoy cosmic bowling on Friday and Saturday nights. On a particularly sweltering summer day, lace up your skates at Pelham Civic Complex where you can enjoy skating, broom ball, and hockey. For a bit of culture, catch a play at South City Theatre, an award-winning theater group that produces six main stage plays a year, or see a ballet performed by the Alabama Youth Ballet Company. Check out your favorite big-name band, live, at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre. The venue features a diverse line-up of artists, with styles ranging from Toby Keith and Tim McGraw to Van Halen and Alt-J. This year’s concert series includes Chris Stapleton, Blink 182 and Journey. No matter what your summer plans are, Pelham has something for everyone!

anish soul-pop band Lukas Graham is set to headline this year’s Just Show Up Show at Pelham Palooza. The band is headlined by vocalist and songwriter Lukas Graham, the person for which the band is named. Other band members include drummer Mark Falgren, bass guitarist Magnus Larsson and Kasper Daugaard on the keyboard.
The band, which is signed to Warner Bros. Records, first found success in Denmark and in other countries throughout Europe before becoming best known in America for their hit song “7 Years,” which was nominated for three Grammy Awards in 2016. The popular song was up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The song also topped the charts in Sweden, Italy, Australia, Austria, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada and the U.K.
“Mama Said,” the band’s second single off their self-titled album, also found worldwide success. The song was first released in Denmark, Norway and Sweden back in 2014, and hit the airwaves in America in 2016. “Mama Said” and “7 Years” focus on what life was like for lead singer Lukas Graham growing up in the autonomous community of Christiania, which is located in the center of Copenhagen, Denmark. According to the band’s official
website, there are no cars, streetlights or police in the 30-block radius community. “We were those kids who were always dirtier than the other kids because our scope away from home was so huge,” Graham said in a biography on the band’s website. “We weren’t poor. We just didn’t have enough. “Instead of making up a pretty little love story about some girl I like, I end up singing about my boys in jail and how I feel. It’s easier for me to be honest about who I am than to start making up some fairytale.” Other acts at this year’s Just Show Up Show include Aaron Carter, Daniel Skye, Maggie Lindemann and MAX. Aaron Carter is a Tampa, Florida native who began his career in the entertainment industry at 7 years old, according to his Facebook page. The pop singer has opened for acts such as the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears and has made several appearances on Nickelodeon. He has released multiple albums, with the latest being his “LØVË” EP in February 2017. Daniel Skye is a 15-year-old singer, songwriter from Hollywood, Florida. The teen began gaining notoriety in 2016 after he started covering his favorite songs and posting them on Instagram, according to his official website. He has since released three original songs, “Maybe,” “LoveSick Day,” and “All I Want.” In between touring, Daniel is working on his debut album. Maggie Lindemann is an 18-yearold singer, songwriter from Texas who moved to Los Angeles at 16 years old to pursue a career in music. Her 2015 independent debut single “Knocking On Your Heart” made its way into the Top 20 of iTunes’ Top Alternative Songs chart, and its follow-up “Couple of Kids” made the top 30, according to her Facebook page. In 2016, her song “Things” trended worldwide on Twitter and landed on Spotify’s Top 50 Viral Worldwide. MAX, an actor, model, singer and songwriter from New York, rounds out the list of performers at the Just Show Up Show. He starred in the Nickelodeon original film “Rags” in 2012 and had a role in the Nickelodeon TV series “How to Rock.” He released his debut EP “First Encounters” in 2010 and toured with Victoria Justice in 2012. He released an album titled “NWL” in 2015 and toured with Fall Out Boy, Wiz Khalifa and Hoodie Allen the same year.
