This family friendly festival is even more special because you have decided to join us. This event wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors. It has been exciting to see the Pelham Palooza grow each year. I’d like to thank Pelham Palooza planning committee and Mrs. Paula Holly, the Executive Assistant to Mayor Waters, for their tireless efforts to make this a success. We believe it’s the perfect place to Play & Stay. New home building permits are up 40 percent compared to July 2015. We are glad to see new families choose Pelham and existing families stay in Pelham. Education remains a high priority! As year 2 of Pelham City Schools closes and year 3 begins, we are proud of the many accomplishments. As you may know, Pelham Ridge Elementary School and
Pelham Oaks Elementary School will open this fall. In addition, this time next year we plan to see the completion of the new Pelham Park Middle School, Pelham Rec Center, and Pelham Library and phase 1of the Pelham Park Trail System. The city has been working to acquire multiple grants to create a city trail system that will run through the park and will eventually connect to Oak Mountain. Take some time to visit one of our many amenities in Pelham: Oak Mountain State Park, Ballantrae Golf Club, the Pelham Racquet Club, the Pelham Civic complex and Ice Arena (Palooza host location), Oak Mountain Amphitheater (Palooza host location) and many others. PelhamPalooza brings entertainment By JESSA PEASE
A
re you ready to celebrate? Pelham Palooza is back and better than ever. Now in its fourth year, this annual celebration brings good music, food and family-friendly entertainment to the city of Pelham. “We are so excited to partner again this year with 103.7 the Q and the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre to do the Just Show Up Show at Pelham Palooza,” said Pelham Palooza event coordinator Paula Holly. “This year we are bringing in seven artists, so there
will be something for everyone to enjoy.” Jordan Fisher, AJR, Nick Fradiani, Emblem, Ben Rector and Daya will take the stage at the concert followed by headliner Bebe Rexha. Pelham Palooza will kick off Saturday, July 16 at 9 a.m. at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. Attendees can peruse multiple vendors and children’s activities or participate in demonstrations and free ice-skating. DJ Thomas Nails with Blaze Entertainment will play tunes and performers, such as Grebel Dance
and Magic by Kevin, will also take the main indoor stage. Outside, guests can take a turn on the free bungee trampoline or cool off with shaved ice. The entire event wraps up with the 103.7 the Q’s Just Show Up Show at 7 p.m. at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre. The first Pelham event was Pelhambration, which was held in 2013. In 2014, the city celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Golden Jubilee. Last year’s Pelham Palooza attracted more than 6,000 guests to the Just Show Up Show on July 16.

ant to head out for a day of hiking, fishing and swimming? Or maybe you’d rather spend a cool summer evening seeing a big name band in Alabama’s largest outdoor theater? Whatever your interests, Pelham has a venue to match. The largest state park in Alabama, Oak Mountain State Park boasts 9,940 acres filled with lush forests and beautiful lakes
and with more than 50 acres of trails, there are plenty options for both biking and hiking from a short, one mile loop to an overnight excursion. Hiking isn’t the only option, either. Head to Flipside Watersports where you can try wake boarding, kneeboarding or tubing across 817 feet of cable at speeds up to 19 miles an hour on Beaver Lake. Visit injured native birds on the mend at the Alabama Wildlife Center and see resident animals on the Tree Top Nature
Trail. Pop in next door to see exhibits at the Oak Mountain Interpretive center, where you can even hold one of the center’s special snakes. For more outdoor fun, head to the Pelham Racquet Club. It’s free to play a game at the public facility, which consists of 20 clay courts and 5 hard courts, all lit with tournament grade lighting. The Pelham Tennis Center, located in Pelham Community Park, has nine courts as well as a fiberglass backboard, great for
perfecting your backhand. Grab a group of friends and play a round of golf at the beautiful Ballantrae Golf Club. The 18-hole course is set amid rolling hills and breathtaking views, and golf pros can help you get your game up to par with a lesson or clinic. For a more informal game, head to Southern Golf where you can play a round of mini golf or practice your swing at the batting cages. If bowling
is your game, spend a day at Oak Mountian Lanes where you can enjoy cosmic bowling on Friday and Saturday nights. On a particularly sweltering summer day, lace up your skates at Pelham Civic Complex where you can enjoy skating, broom ball, and hockey. For a bit of culture, catch a play at South City Theatre, an award-winning theater group that produces six main
stage plays a year, or see a ballet performed by the Alabama Youth Ballet Company. Check out your favorite big-name band, live, at the Oak Mountain Ampitheatre. The venue features a diverse line-up of artists, with styles ranging from Toby Keith and Tim McGraw to Van Halen and Alt-J. No matter what you’re summer plans, Pelham has something for everyone!

eadlining this year’s Just Show Up Show at Pelham Palooza is BeBe Rexha, an electropop/ pop singer and songwriter. Best known for her song “No Broken Hearts,” featuring rapper Nicki Minaj,
Rexha was also featured in Cash Cash’s “Take Me Home,” David Guetta’s “Hey Mama” and in the G-Eazy duet of “Me, Myself & I.” Rexha’s journey began in Brooklyn, NY. She began writing songs in high school. “I was the girl that didn’t go to prom
or my graduation, because I was too busy working with producers and making music,” she said in a biography on her official website. “I’d feel at home singing over hiphop beats and rolling with the boys. It’s where I still have the most fun, and it’s where my personality comes through.” In 2013, she wrote “The Monster” in a

Harlem studio. Eminem and Rihanna recorded the single, and it became a hit after its release in October 2013. That hit paved the way for future successes, and Rexha now has more than “10 million overall single sales, 800 million Spotify streams, 1 billion combined YouTube/VEVO views, and reached a radio audience of 7 billion,” according to her website. Other acts in this year’s Pelham Palooza include Jordan Fisher, AJR, Nick Fradiana, Emblem, Ben Rector and Daya. Jordan Fisher is a Birmingham native who writes and records his own music. The Retro Pop/R&B singer also plays the piano, guitar, bass and drums, according to his Facebook page. Fisher is also an actor and recently appeared as “Doody” in the television performance of “Grease Live!” on Fox. AJR is a trio of brothers from New York City who got their start about 10 years. “Having toured with Demi Lovato, Train, Andy Grammer, Hoodie Allen, and American Authors, it’s clear AJR’s appeal is as diverse as their music and audiences around the world can’t get enough,” their website stated. Nick Fradiani is best known as the winner of the 14th season of “American Idol.” His new album, “Hurricane,” is set to be released in August. Singer-songwriter Ben Rector has released four studio albums and one live album, according to his website. The pop singer has sold more than 250,00 albums and 2 million downloads. His most recent album is “Brand New,” which will be released in August. Daya is a 17-year-old platinum recording artist who plays the piano, guitar and ukulele. Her self-titled EP was released in September 2015, and her single “Hide Away” hit No. 19 in Spotify’s US Top 50 chart, according to her website.

Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED was founded in 1902 by Crawford Johnson, Sr., who purchased exclusive franchise rights for Coca-Cola bottling and distribution in Birmingham, Alabama. The city is now headquarters for both the Birmingham Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED. Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED is the third largest bottler of
