Geneva & Luke

Luke proposed to Geneva at their alma mater’s homecoming game five years after first meeting her at their college’s homecoming.

HHalf a decade ago I remember sitting on a fence about the inevitable “ring by spring” epidemic that seemed to plague the female senior population on campus. In the spring semester of my freshman year, I recall perusing through corridors, embarking to classes and dodging girls flashing the rocks on their fingers.

Then, I would’ve said girls should focus on their education and avoid the so-called “MRS” degree that skeptics such as myself would joke about being one attainment so many seem to pursue.

Admittedly, I am now only five years wiser and humbled to say I so enjoy being engaged because I found my “Mr. Right.”

I look back at freshman me, whose face resembled that of a pepperoni pizza and whose stress level required four mugs of joe a day, and laugh, thinking if only she knew that she, too, would fall in love at a young age.

One of my best friends, Beth, and I were invited to lunch by my cousin, Bobby, while we all happened to be in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We met up with Bobby and unknowingly to us several of his fraternity brothers. I sat right next to my “Mr. Right” himself, who looked completely uninterested that two Hippie Sabotage enthusiasts were helping themselves to the table’s shared cornucopia of breadsticks.

Hours soon faded as the sun retreated, and Justin, my now fiancé and father of my son, and I became inseparable. We played tic-tac-toe in the sand, drawing janky lines with our toes and trying to out-wit the other. Unfortunately, tic-tac-toe takes all of 30 seconds to play, so there’s not much room to one-up your opponent. Our conversation soon turned to politics, music tastes, our lives’ ambitions and how we each were going to make our mark in the world. The rest, as the cliché goes, is history.

Now just a few short months out from our tying the knot, I can’t help but smile at the younger version of myself, who was utterly disgusted by the idea of being entrapped by love.

My message for you, readers, is that life often tricks you into thinking you’re in control. I believe in a greater power who has a sense of humor–one that involves the best plans for us. To the young and hopeful reading my letter, I pray for you to find your “Mr. or Mrs. Right,” but just know that he or she may meet you when you least expect it. But, isn’t that the beauty of falling in love? Adventure is the path of which love blooms between two aspiring souls. To that I say, love on.

The Alabama Civic Chorale’s focus will always be ministering to the audience through song.

I“I should be sorry if I only entertained them. I wished to make them better.” It is a quote attributed to George Frideric Handel. It is also the inspiration for the Alabama Civic Chorale. The choral group is celebrating its 75th year.

THE HISTORY

The Alabama Civic Chorale performed for the first time in 1947. Bebe Kok was only a child when her parents, Earl and Frances, started the choir.

“When they first started it, they started it with a high school choir that my mother was teaching and a youth choir from a church where my father was the director of music. It was a meld of those groups,” Bebe says.

The group went to a music conference to sharpen their skills. The conference choir performed Handel’s “Messiah,” inspiring Bebe’s parents to begin something that would grow to become bigger than themselves. The singers insisted they wanted to sing it.

Not only did the choir practice the “Messiah,” they studied the Messiah, the history behind the oratorio and the scriptures.

“I was amazed at how many times they would practice during the week,” she shares. “As the group grew over the next few years, they went to different churches and to a high school to perform.”

Over the years the Alabama Civic Chorale has performed various works, but they always return to Handel’s “Messiah.” While the program may have

changed through the years, the goal of the Alabama Civic Chorale has never wavered.

The chorale started with the “Messiah,” which allowed people in smaller churches to join together with the chorale to sing this oratorio and other major works.

Throughout the choir’s history, they’ve done other classics. However, it always comes back to the oratorio that started it all. The choir performs this piece every year the Sunday before Thanksgiving, which is the first Sunday in Advent.

Earl and Frances knew when they formed the choir what they wanted the group to be, and it wasn’t to be a group that required an audition. They wanted it to be a family that came together to learn the scripture, to sing the scripture and get to know what was intended by Handel—to know what was intended through the scriptures.

They intended for members and audiences alike to know the message of the Messiah, to become a family and to walk away changed by that message.

To truly understand Handel’s “Messiah,” it is important to understand how he wrote the music.

“For instance, the melancholy key of G minor for ‘Behold the Lamb of God Who Takes Away the Sins of the World’ and the praise key of D major was used when he wrote the ‘Hallelujah Chorus,’” Bebe says. “Handel painted a picture with the key signatures. When you’re talking about ‘Let Us Break Their Bonds Asunder,’ you can see bonds being broken. The first four notes of ‘And With His Stripes We Are Healed’ are the musical sign of the cross. To not understand what Handel wrote takes away half of ‘The Messiah’ itself. My feeling is if we can bring forth what Handel intended, then the people listening will catch it. They will understand it, and we will have made a difference.”

as Huntsville and Atlanta each Sunday to be a part of the choir. The Alabama Civic Chorale is unique in that they do not require an audition to be a part of the group. Last season the Alabama Civic Chorale boasted 95 members with more than 15 of those members being first-time participants.

From its humble beginnings, the group has always come together as a special family.

“Everyone in the group feels like family,” Bebe’s daughter and Alabama Civic Chorale Publicity Chair Jacken Stubblefield says. “I think that feeling of family comes from the fact that everyone volunteers in some way to support the success of the group. Whether it’s fundraising, publicity, setting up for rehearsals and the program, our membership committee, hospitality team or community service committees—everyone is involved. It is a team effort.”

To the chorale, the “Messiah” is not just a piece of work. It is a tradition.

“We bring everyone into the fold as part of that tradition,” Jacken shares. “When Bebe was talking about the wisdom she imparts to the singers about what they are singing about, that’s also a reason why people keep returning. It’s not just a piece of work. We’re singing the scripture, and the ‘Messiah’ is unique because everything you sing is scripture. It’s not something a composer has made up. This is literal scripture in the Bible. So, it would be a travesty to try to sing it and not know what we are singing about.”

Last year the chorale featured an original member. Shirley Daviston was a member of the first performance, standing on a box so she could be seen. Shirley took several years off, but she is back enhancing the chorale with her knowledge of the music.

The group continues to grow each year because current members invite other members.

THE SERVICE

While the group is focused on performing during the holiday

season, they focus on serving the community yearround, beginning the day after the performance returning to the Galleria Woods: Senior Living Community.

This was the first time the Alabama Civic Chorale performed live (at Galleria Woods) since the

COVID-19 pandemic closed the community to visitors. The chorale performed several pieces from the “Messiah” as well as several carols for the residents.

“We’ve joined with high schools to do fundraisers, so they could afford instruments and supplies for their music programs,” Jacken says. “During the

pandemic we went, like others, to help first responders and show appreciation. We visited the fire stations and the hospitals. This past year we collected canned goods, similar to other years for the program. Last year we had a “QR” code that took people to a website to explain Handel’s charitable spirit.”

Handel would perform benefit concerts with all the proceeds going to a children’s hospital in London. In addition to collecting canned goods, the chorale has collected children’s items such as diapers, clothing, toys and formula for the Oak Mountain Mission.

The chorale is not only trying to carry out Handel’s work, but also live out his charitable spirit by doing something for the community.

“We’ve got people in the group that will get together and get items together for different organizations,” Bebe says. “It’s really a community chorus that acts as an [outreach group], too.”

THE FUTURE

Bebe took over as the director of the Alabama Civic Chorale in 1993 after the passing of her father.

“My father died in September, and I directed in November,” Bebe shares. “It was hard, but it really was beautiful. I asked the group if they wanted it to go on, and they all said, ‘yes!’ I said, ‘Well, then let’s get started.’ I had somebody raising the money, and somebody doing the publicity.”

In 2022, Governor Kay Ivey named Nov. 20 as “Alabama Civic Chorale Day.”

Both of Bebe’s daughters, Jacken Stubblefield and Cissy Johnson, joined the chorale when they were in their early teens, as did their children after them. Jacken will continue her role as publicity chair. She says Cissy, who is the choral director at Montevallo Middle School and Montevallo High School, should be in line to be the next director because she is talented and gifted with the ability to teach.

No matter who carries on the Alabama Civic Chorale’s legacy as director, one thing remains certain: the chorale is a special family tradition that has and will carry on from generation to generation. The chorale is dedicated to serving the community and bringing cultural arts to the area and to enrich the lives of those who sing and those that hear the group.

Learning about the Gardens

One of the missions of Aldridge Gardens is education, both for children and for adults. The Gardens offers a tremendously-wide variety of opportunities for children, including summer camps and school field trips, but are you aware of the wide variety of adult education offerings?

If you are a member of the Gardens (check our website for membership details), you qualify for our member pop-ups! Pop-ups are short (usually an hour, but can last 90 minutes with Q&A) sessions, usually pertaining to day-to-day landscape, gardening and horticulture issues. We try and focus on “real world” problems—things you would experience at your home landscape. The pop-ups generate some heavy discussion, often off-topic, but that is honestly the intent. There is always something we can learn from each other!

In addition to pop-ups, the Gardens offers general education classes that range from snowflake cutting with Gary Chapman at Christmas, decorating with Beth White (seasonal classes), spirits

tasting and recipes, pruning classes (better known as how to avoid crape murder) and various other classes of general and horticultural interest. Almost all Adult Education classes are in the

Our week-long-sessions summer camps, starting June 5 and running through June 30, are designed for fun but geared toward education. Educators certified by the State of Alabama teach every session, which has its basis in a S.T.E.A.M. branch—kids have

fun and learn without realizing it— subliminally!

Weekly sessions are daily, 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday. Children may attend multiple weekly sessions, but only one session per week.

I can’t believe that I am saying “hello springtime” from Aldridge Gardens already, but we are always excited to move into our spring mode as we watch the winter season begin to end.

The Bonsai Terrace

Did you know that Aldridge Gardens has one of the finest bonsai collections in the Southeast?

Our bonsai have been absent this past year, while their new “home” was being constructed off the end of the driveway outside the Roots Gift Shop. Many of you have missed one of the Gardens’ most loved attractions.

We are excited to announce that the bonsai are back in their outstanding new home, the Meyer Bonsai Terrace!

Over a year went into the planning, design and construction of the Terrace, and the wait was worth it. John Walker, of Walking Tree Bonsai, our curator, created both an outstanding addition to the Gardens and a wonderful new venue to display bonsai in more appropriate surroundings.

Entrance to the Terrace is through our own version of a Torii gate. Once inside, a meandering brick path winds down to the Terrace overlook, all the while surrounded by bonsai displayed on both platforms and on beautiful, stones selected to display these living pieces of art. Alongside the path are plantings complementary to the bonsai theme and a “zen” fountain. The Terrace itself

affords beautiful new views of the Gardens. Some of the original platforms have been relocated to the Terrace, but there are bonsai at the patio level of the house, too.

The Meyer Bonsai Terrace can be found behind the Aldridge House just beyond the Roots Gift Shop and is open during normal Gardens’ hours. Bonsai are changed periodically, so the experience will change several times during the year.

Come visit this truly magical addition to Aldridge Gardens!

We use early spring as a clean-up time as we anticipate new blooms throughout the various areas of Aldridge Gardens. Our native plants are not quite ready to blossom, but we can see them starting to bud early.

Thoughts of warmer weather is getting near as we put final plans on our upcoming events.

Our annual plant sale will be April 27, 28 and a half day on April 29. Our plant sale organizers, who are all volunteers, have been ordering plants and planning this sale since last year’s sale ended. We could not do it without our wonderful volunteers. This sale helps support Aldridge Gardens, and we hope that everyone will put those dates on your calendar to stop by those days.

At just 15, Sara Hancock rose above her grief to create the nonprofit organization, To The Fullest Foundation.

NNow as a junior at Hoover High School in the business academy, Sara Hancock seeks to bring awareness to breast cancer research and honor her mother, who she lost to the disease in 2019, by bringing people together in the community.

“My day-to-day life is very busy,” Sara remarks with a soft chuckle.

Beyond heading her nonprofit organization, Sara is a photographer, a chapter officer, District 1 Vice President with DECA and serves as historian for the “Teens Need Teens” organization, which is dedicated to helping students lead a drug, alcohol and tobacco-free lifestyle.

The life that she leads is defined by her heart and dedication to the community that she calls home,

starting with the creation of To The Fullest Foundation.

To The Fullest Foundation was born through a Facebook fundraiser that Sara put together in October 2020. “I was just messing around when I created the fundraiser,” Sara recalls. “But by the end of the month, I had raised $5,000.”

After understanding the depth of the platform she had, Sara unlocked the necessary potential to start something greater than herself. Her second fundraiser was also created on Facebook but was accompanied by an in-person event at Whole Scoop to raise awareness and curate connections in the community.

Ten thousand dollars was raised in January 2021,

and Sara knew that something special was brewing.

“Promoting and running a nonprofit came naturally to me,” Sara admits. “I think it made me realize what I wanted my life to look like and gave purpose to everything that I do.”

At the center of it all, she knew that she wanted her mother’s legacy to serve as the foundation for the organization’s impact.

“The name of the organization is based on the way that my mom lived her life, ‘to the fullest,’” Sara explains. “I like to say that I am a lot like her in the way that she always went after something new and did everything that she possibly could to the fullest of her ability. Every opportunity that she got, she took.”

Sara expresses that the older she gets, the harder it is to remember the details of her mother’s life. By naming her organization this way, she focuses on the most prominent feature that she wants to remember about her mother: that she lived her life to the fullest.

“After I lost my mom, I needed a reason to just live in general,” Sara shares. “Finding that purpose was difficult because I questioned what I could do with my life. I struggled with the idea of why my mother was gone, but I was still here. To someone going through similar emotions, don’t give up. There is hope for everyone, whether that be starting your own nonprofit or doing anything that you can find happiness in. The healing process is so different for everyone. You will have good days and bad days, but you cannot let the bad days define you.”

Before, she had lost a vision of what her life could be. Now, as a 16 year old creating a community through breast cancer awareness, she knows that life is what you make it.

Sara says hope exists within every individual. By fostering an atmosphere of togetherness, To The Fullest Foundation is able to not only connect those who share a sense of grief, but also spread vital knowledge about breast cancer to young people.

separate times, I am still constantly learning something new,” Sara admits. She believes that the more knowledge an individual has, the more power they possess as well.

“My team and I are changing and saving people’s lives by sharing what we are learning about the signs of breast cancer. The main goal that I want people to take away is that they need to be aware, and there is always more to know.”

Through various events that the organization attends or hosts, individuals can speak to members of the team and gain information on signs of breast cancer and find a safe space to thrive in a community.

Though Sara finds great reward in shaping the lives of others through her nonprofit, her journey did not begin as a simple endeavor.

At just 15 years old, she was tasked with sorting out the legality of a new organization. “I had no idea what I was doing going into this,” Sara says. “So, I was looking things up and hoping for the best. For example, we just finished filing for 501(c)(3) certification, which means that we would be an official taxexempted nonprofit. It is a difficult certification to receive, but it has been a great learning experience for me.”

With the help of Mary Nobles Hancock, Matt Hinshaw and Wood Herren, To The Fullest Foundation became an active nonprofit! To The Fullest Foundation’s co-founder and vice president, Radhika Pant, is a good friend of Sara’s and is also the backbone of this organization.

“I owe so much to Radhika,” Sara explains. “She exemplifies what it means to have passion for an organization. Radhika has been my rock since day one, and I truly could not have done this

SIGNS OF BREAST CANCER

“Some of the biggest signs are lumps on your breast,” Sara says. “These are incredibly easy to check for. Women should begin checking, starting at a young age. The sooner that you catch it, the easier it will be to treat it. Additionally, swollen lymph nodes, rashes and other abnormalities on the breast and chest regions can be signs and should be paid attention to regularly.”

The biggest success in the eyes of Sara and her team comes through creating relationships with others and forming communal links that extend beneath the surface level.

“Seeing all of the people that are meeting others who care about breast cancer awareness as much as I do has been empowering,” she recounts. “My favorite part of going to events is when people come up and tell us their stories. Whether their family member has breast cancer, they lost a loved one or they have had it, we love to connect and hear their story. The original intention of this foundation was to touch someone else and show others that they are not going through this alone.”

To The Fullest Foundation provides the tools for individuals everywhere to learn about breast cancer, starting with the community that has been founded and fostered in Hoover, Alabama.

Knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer for early detection is crucial, as well as being a part of something greater than oneself. By joining To The Fullest Foundation, one can accomplish these and more–all they have to say is, “yes.”

THE FIRST CANINE LIBRARIAN

The library is partnering with Fidos Facility Dogs to welcome its first canine employee!

A facility dog is a type of therapy dog that is trained to work with a handler employed by the facility on a full-time basis. Facility Dogs provide comfort and support to people of various backgrounds and physical conditions. The most important role of a Facility Dog is to motivate and inspire a positive environment.

Currently in training for her new position, Libby will participate in all types of library programs including story time, study breaks, meet and greets and outreach activities once she becomes a full-time employee. We are especially excited to offer an afternoon reading club for kids who need a little extra help, as research indicates that dogs can improve academic performance by reducing stress and increasing motivation and focus.

Libby’s path to librarianship began last summer when we first met Kelly Schaeffer, Executive Director of Fidos Facility Dogs, a Hoover-based non-profit organization. We spent the remainder of the year learning about all the ways a facility dog would enhance the library’s current services. We visited other facility dogs in the area. In December, we signed a contract with Fidos to officially employ Libby, and we began handler and co-handler training in January.

Before Libby joins the staff on a full-time basis, she will have trained since she was 10 weeks old and will have successfully participated in Pet Partner’s inperson evaluation that assesses Libby and her handler. Pet Partners is the nation’s leading non-profit organization, demonstrating and promoting the health and wellness benefits of animal-assisted therapy, activities and education.

Libby’s handler will be Wendy Geist, who is a librarian who has worked predominately in the service of children and teens for 23 years. Libby will live with Wendy full-time. However, Libby has a whole team of staff caregivers which includes three co-handlers, Emma Davis, Lindsay Davis and Shannon Haddock, as well as a group of volunteers who will go through

the training to make sure we are equipped to provide Libby the best possible care.

We’re fortunate to the Friends of the Hoover Public Library and the Hoover Library Foundation for donations that made adopting Libby a possibility. Although, some expenses still remain, so we’ll be hosting fundraisers over the next few months at the library. Many schools in Jefferson County have facility dogs, but we’re the first public library that I know of to have a canine librarian on staff. We hope you are just as excited as we are about this unique service and will make plans to meet Libby in person at the library soon.

Birmingham local Susan Milner of Susan Milner Design sheds light on picking the perfect bouquets for every wedding season.

After 35 years in the interior design industry and 12 years in the wedding florals business, Susan Milner has seen it all. The beautiful, the intricate and the innately unique are all words that come to mind when describing the bouquets she creates for a bride’s big day.

Susan Milner Design was born through Susan’s volunteer work, planning events and decorating florals for her childrens’ school events such as proms and dinner banquets. A few of the other moms noticed her talent and asked her if she’d consider arranging florals for their own events, including their childrens’ weddings. What started as a side hustle is now one of Birmingham’s premier wedding floral businesses, which actually is but a branch of her own interior design company.

“Doing floral design was a natural extension of my interior design career,” Susan says. “A lot of the same mental tools are used. You need to understand how to work with color, proportions, scale. Those are universal design tools that apply to both fields.”

Susan began designing florals for two to three weddings a year, but now she does near 20 weddings or more a year.

“I have probably done 250 weddings,” Susan says with a laugh. Reflecting back on all of her brides’ nuptials, she’s quick to offer key advice.

“Brides should pick something they will love 20 years [down the road], looking at wedding pictures,” she explains. “To me, one of the biggest things is to try to stay away from trends. Classic, timeless designs are a hallmark of my work. I encourage brides to choose florals that are classic and will stand the test of time.”

One constant in Susan’s work is her dedication to helping a bride’s vision come to fruition on her wedding day. She recalls how the feeling she gets, watching a bride see her bouquet for the first time, is simply magical.

“My ultimate goal is for the bride to just be beyond thrilled with her florals,” Susan adds. “I want to exceed all expectations. I want to create florals that are beautiful, and I want to be proud to put my name on anything. Most importantly, I want the bride to be happy.”

Pure joy is a sentiment that all of Susan’s brides share. Here, Susan offers her take on seasonal florals that contribute to the “wedding bliss feeling.”

“Soft, airy colors and flowy textures just says, ‘spring,’” Susan explains. “Flowers such as spring bulbs, daffodils, hyacinth and foxglove are all just beautiful hallmarks of spring.” For this season, Susan recommends brides choose soft pastels such as pinks and whites to create a subtle, timeless design in their bouquets.

“Peonies are very summery,” Susan says. “You can go one of two ways in summer. You can go with soft pastels with cool whites, ivories and greenery. Or, you can go on the other end of the spectrum and do really hot, vibrant colors like orange and purple.” Whatever a bride chooses, Susan adds that the bouquet should match the aura of the dress. A more traditional silhouette, she believes, should pair with a more modest bouquet shape.

“Dahlias are the number one fall flowers that come to mind. They’re only available mid-to-late summer and in the fall. I also use ranunculus throughout the year. They’re fitting for fall,” Susan says. “To me, the richer colors and bringing in natural elements like berries, seed pods and fall greenery are the best inspiration for a fall bouquet.”

As for winter florals, Susan recommends either going with a “cool-white aesthetic” or playing on the season’s colors, such as red and green for Christmas or blue and white for Hanukkah. “I love bringing in wintery greens like pines and cedars,” Susan adds. “The scent can transport you to another place.”

Growing up in Mountain Brook, Mary Glenn McElveen woke up every morning ready to conquer the day in style. From strutting her high school’s hallways to making statements at social activities, Mary Glenn’s time spent curating her own style has contributed to her reputation as a stylist and tastemaker in her hometown.

“I remember as a little girl playing dress up,” she explains. “It was my creative outlet. Honestly, that hasn’t stopped in my life. Now, everyday style really is a part of who I am today. I feel like this is where I thrive.”

Being fashion forward, she says, has evolved in meaning to her over time. Now, it’s about accentuating her clients’ confidence by helping them feel the most like themselves in what they wear. Why? Because when one feels like a more “elevated” version of herself, she stands a little taller, walks more confidently and acts with purpose.

After graduating from Mountain Brook High School, Mary Glenn attended the University of Alabama, eventually earning a degree in marketing. Through her classes she learned the importance of selling her talents, whether this was through social media or the way she presented herself in fashion and design. This prompted her to spend the next few years styling houses and curating her taste inside the closet and throughout the home.

Around this time, girls that Mary Glenn had been helping style since they were high schoolers started getting engaged and needing Mary Glenn’s help for life’s more memorable moments. This sparked the realization that her clients and community had styling needs that she could meet more full-time.

“With my background being in the design world, [I formed] a lot of client-based relationships,” she says. “I’ve always been able to connect with people, really understanding their needs.”

This simple request soon snowballed into what is now Mary Glenn’s own business, M.G. Style. Boasting more than 35,000 Instagram followers, M.G. Next, think of the aesthetic of your wedding. Are you going for shabby-chic or more of a classic, timeless vibe? Your gifts will want to reflect your desired aesthetic and complement the color palette and theme you choose.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We were introduced by our very best friends, Julia and Ches Thomas. Julia is my best friend from middle school, and Ches is Ben’s best friend from college. They told us we should get married, but Ben thought we should meet for drinks first–or so that’s what his first text to me read. We met for drinks at the local bar in my neighborhood, which turned into tacos and ended with ice cream at the one and only, Jeni’s.

THE PROPOSAL

Ben really showed his sentimental side with the proposal, surprising me at the location of our first date, Old Glory. I met him there for happy hour after work on June 4, 2021. I didn’t even notice the bar was empty because he had a photographer at one booth and other servers acting like customers to keep the surprise going. Ben got down on one knee with the most beautiful ring and replayed the first time he met me, walking down the steps at Old Glory.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Midway through the reception, the band called Ben’s mom on stage to play the saxophone and then called my dad on stage to play drums. Next thing I know, Ben is pulling me up on stage, and we’re dancing with his mom and my dad. It was the highlight of the night!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

The Cathedral of Saint Paul’s altar was a gorgeous detail. Father Fallon’s homily and messages throughout the ceremony really hit home, and his presence meant so much to us. The new organ at the Cathedral of Saint Paul is a work of art by itself. The OPOV Band played music that got everyone dancing, even our grandparents, too.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Luke and I met in my first semester of college. Even though we’d never officially met, we were mutually interested in one another. I was actually obsessed with him but thought he would never give me the time of day since he was four years older! We officially met the night of our college’s homecoming, Oct. 16, and have been together almost ever since.

THE PROPOSAL

I would’ve married Luke the day we met, so when waiting for a proposal, I didn’t have much patience. We were coming up on our fifth-year anniversary, and Luke suggested we go back to Florence for the homecoming game, which just happened to be on Oct. 16. I wasn’t sure we were getting engaged, but I was hopeful. We arrived in Florence and immediately went to campus where Luke proposed with our family and close friends waiting for us nearby. It was a dream!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Our favorite moment of the wedding was getting to have a really sweet and private first look. We’re each other’s best friend, so all of the nerves and anxiety were quickly alleviated when we saw each other. We had written letters to each other, so getting to read each other’s letters was also such a special moment.

There is not one thing I would change about our wedding day. I loved everything. Our wedding planner, Lauryn, took my vision and made it truly come to life. I couldn’t have made it without her.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Tavon and I met at a gathering through a mutual friend. However, when we met he was so shy he only said, “Hi.” After we met, he finally got the nerve up to ask for my number on Facebook messenger.

THE PROPOSAL

Tavon and I had big plans to travel to Chicago for my birthday celebration. Sadly, this was at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the state was on an emergency lockdown. So, we finally made the decision to cancel our trip three days before my birthday. Little did I know, Tavon and my mother were planning a surprise birthday party for me instead. At the party with our close family and friends, he asked me to be his wife! Let’s just say I will never forget my birthday from that year. I cried tears of joy all night from the surprise party and surprise engagement!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment during the wedding was seeing my family and friends enjoy themselves! My great aunts were on the dance floor all night. One of my aunts danced so much that she had to use her cane the next day!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

My favorite wedding details would have to be the floral arrangements and the dance floor! Everyone tried to discourage me about having pampas grass in my florals, but my designers did an amazing job at showing how beautiful they can be. Also, a lot of people said a dance floor wasn’t necessary, but I beg to differ! The dance floor really elevates the design.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

John David and I went to middle school, high school and college together. We had lots of mutual friends and had been good friends through the years, but it wasn’t until college that our friendship turned into more. (If you ask John David, he will tell you he had me wrapped around his finger since middle school)!

THE PROPOSAL

It was very hot, and for me, a long anticipated day. I was under the impression we were going to a family get together, but there were different plans in store for me. As we were driving through Birmingham, we pulled off to the side of the road due to “car troubles.” I, of course, very impatiently did not handle the car troubles well because I did not want to be late. After a few minutes, John David walked around to the side of the truck I was standing on and asked if I was ready. I knew by the look in his eyes this meant the day I had dreamed of was happening! We walked a little ways, and there stood a giant cross and the sweetest pictures and details where John David asked me to be his wife!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My most precious memory was seeing my dad for the first time. The entire day was a dream, but something about standing in white in front of my dad had to be one of the most sentimental parts of the day.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

My favorite details were being announced to “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC at the reception, and us walking out under an “Alabama shaker tunnel” at the end of the day. We are big “Bama” fans, and it was a fun way to incorporate a part of us into the wedding!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Aaron and I were sophomores at The University of Alabama when we met. We were introduced by a mutual friend, Wells Thomas, who was a groomsman in our wedding. We invited each other to our date parties that semester and started dating shortly after.

THE PROPOSAL

Aaron proposed to me at my favorite place, Lake Martin. We were with family at my grandmother’s house on Lake Martin for the proposal. During a badminton game, Aaron got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him! Shortly after the proposal, Aaron’s parents surprised me and appeared from the house. It was so special to have both our families there. Our parents had not yet met, so it was even more special getting to introduce them during such a wonderful moment.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment of our wedding was pulling up to the reception on the boat. We were greeted on the dock by our families and above us, lining the rails, were all of our guests cheering and toasting to us. It was so amazing, seeing all of our friends and family there together to celebrate with us.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

I loved how every aspect of our day turned out. From the beautiful flowers to the cake table to the Lake as a backdrop in all of our pictures, I wouldn’t change a thing about it. We didn’t do a first look, but I’m so glad we didn’t. It was so special not seeing each other until I walked down the aisle.

We met our freshman year at Mississippi State through a mutual friend. We actually started hanging out in Auburn when Auburn played Mississippi State in football and continued spending time with one another once we got back to Starkville.

THE PROPOSAL

I worked for Mississippi State’s football program. Football is a big part of my family. We were out taking our graduation pictures, and he told me he had a surprise for me. My boss got us on the field to take a few pictures. We took some different ones, and then we started taking individual pictures–that is when Luke got the ring out and popped the question! Both of our families were at the stadium, and our friends held a party for us afterwards!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

We both had letters to read to each other during our first look, but we both got busy taking pictures that we forgot to read those letters until nearly 30 minutes before the ceremony. Our photographer and videographer took us outside the chapel, and we read them out loud to each other. It was a sweet moment that really prepared our minds and hearts for the ceremony. It was also a cool moment to hear those words and see the emotions from each other on such a special day!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

My favorite detail was our neon sign. We liked the idea of one but didn’t want our last name, so we put “I love you so much” on it instead. A lot of guests used it as a backdrop for pictures. It was a nice touch.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

William and I met at Hoover High School in our eleventh-grade history class. He was a very shy, cross country and track athlete, and I was an outgoing cheerleader. William offered to help me complete my entire portion for a class project, and as they say, “the rest is history.” We started dating the summer before our senior year. We both went on to pursue college degrees at the University of Alabama, and our relationship grew and matured with us!

THE PROPOSAL

William proposed in Tuscaloosa on UA’s campus at Marr’s Springs. It’s a beautiful, natural spring in the middle of campus. It’s a place we had walked by together many times. William told me we were going to go to lunch at our favorite date night spot, FIVE Tuscaloosa. We took a detour through campus and stopped and went for that familiar walk. William stopped and knelt down and asked the question I had been so excited to hear! When he knelt down, the ring box was still in his back pocket and got stuck there. We both were laughing and giddy as William had to stand back up, get the ring out, then kneel back down to ask again and of course, I said yes!

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment during our wedding was the private dance we did at the very end of our reception. Just before we left, when everyone was outside prior to our rose petal exit, William and I danced under the twinkle lights to Keith Whitley’s version of “When You Say Nothing At All.”

Some of my favorite wedding details were the florals, my bridesmaids’ dresses and my wedding shoes. They were all gorgeous and made my vision come to life. The florals were all the blues and dusty pinks of my dreams!

James and I met through mutual friends in 2019 while he was stationed at Fort Benning, and I was in school at Auburn. My friend spent all of 2018 telling me that she had the perfect guy for me. I finally caved in 2019 and was sent on a blind date with James. We went out for pizza and beer and walked around Auburn’s campus for hours. All I can say is my friend was right!

THE PROPOSAL

We made a trip to London summer 2021 to meet the rest of James’s family. After spending five days in quarantine due to travel restrictions, we finally got to get out into the city. We spent the day going to museums and seeing the sights. We were walking to Buckingham Palace through St James’s Park and popped into the Duck Island Cottage. It was a complete surprise when he popped the question! He proposed with a family ring with the intention that we would design a ring together in London.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

During the reception, my bustle kept breaking even though we attempted to fix it twice. “Dancing Queen” was playing, and I wasn’t going to stop dancing. Everyone I was dancing with ended up picking up my dress, and it made an amazing picture!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

The marquee letters we got from Say It In Lights were completely epic and really elevated the dance floor with the wall of lights behind the DJ stand.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Jake and I became best friends in sixth grade at Berry Middle School and started our relationship in eighth grade. We went to Spain Park High School and graduated as “middle school sweethearts!” Actually, Jake asked me to marry him on December 3, 2013, on a piece of paper he passed me in the school hallway!

THE PROPOSAL

Jake proposed at The Barn at Shady Lane. The room was decorated with flower petals and tea light candles, and the only ones who were in the room were Jake, me and the photographer he secretly hired. Once we got settled, he played a video that included pictures of us together over our years of dating. The video also included footage of him asking my parents and grandparents for their blessing, and family members and close friends sharing their support.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

Jake and I did not do a first look. I like to say seeing Jake at the altar felt like a breath of fresh air to me. It felt like we were the only two there at that moment. Seeing his reaction to me walking down the aisle is something I will never forget.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

We took communion and had our families join us at the altar where our fathers each led a prayer over us. We decided to place my family on Jake’s side and his on mine, so our immediate family got to see our faces during the ceremony. Jake and I also decided to do a choreographed first dance to “Love Like This” by Lauren Daigle. We ended the night driving away in a T-Bird, which made it feel like we were in a movie!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Logan is from a small town called Corner, and my dad’s side of the family is as well. Logan has four nieces, and I have three cousins who have been friends since they were little. They all live in Corner, too. Logan and I would see each other at events in Corner. We knew of each other and would wave and say hello. I attended Auburn University and Logan attended Samford University, but once I moved back to Birmingham to attend nursing school, Logan decided to ask me on a date. I was nervous, but we both ended that date telling our best friends “that’s the person I’m going to marry.” God’s timing was absolutely perfect in our story, and we feel so blessed.

THE PROPOSAL

We planned a trip to the beach with our families to celebrate my nursing school graduation. I still had to take my nursing boards and pass them, so in my mind Logan was definitely not going to propose. We all got dressed up to eat dinner in 30A, but on the way to dinner, we had to stop and “go see one of Logan’s friends.” Logan and I got out of the car and began walking in this beautiful neighborhood called Carillon Beach. He stopped in front of this beautiful chapel, got down on his knee and proposed. I was completely surprised!

My very favorite moment during the wedding was our first dance. We both absolutely love to dance. We danced to “I Want to Dance with Somebody,” and it was so much fun and matched our personalities perfectly.

When we did our first look, it was such a special moment. Having time before pictures and all the rush that comes with wedding festivities, just to be with each other and talk, was perfect and so meaningful.

We met through a mutual friend after a Nashville Predators hockey game. We became inseparable, and the rest is history!

THE PROPOSAL

Brett planned a romantic walk to the top of Love Circle, which overlooks downtown Nashville. He scoped it out the previous week and felt it was the perfect place. However, once reaching the top, he discovered it was way too crowded. Instead, he proposed on the porch of what is now our future home together.

FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENT

My favorite moment was when we became Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Brett Warren. All of the effort in planning the wedding led up to that specific moment. In front of God and all of those we cherish, everything came together so perfectly. Brett’s younger brother officiated the ceremony, and it was unbelievably intimate and special.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

Many of the details of my wedding highlighted generations before us. The church was founded in 1888 with beautiful stonework and stained-glass windows. I wore an heirloom lavalier that was worn by the past five generations of women in my family on their wedding day. The dress I wore was previously worn by my grandmother in 1950 and my mother in 1977. The ring that I wore on my right hand belonged to my dad’s mom. I carried an antique handkerchief given to me by my mother in law. We displayed pictures of the weddings of our parents and our grandparents at the wedding and reception. My grandfather was a big golfer at Hoover Country Club, and my parents’ wedding reception also took place there. I gifted my bridesmaids beautiful vintage furs. Our “get away” was a horse-drawn carriage. My wedding day felt so very magical, thanks to these details!

This spring, we are celebrating weddings and anniversaries, graduations and milestones achieved. And if we are honest, there is so much work that goes into planning these big events. It can feel like we’ve run a race when we finally get here. After all, what mother-of-the-bride hasn’t wished for her own weeklong-honeymoon-style getaway after helping to execute her daughter’s dream wedding? And to be sure, before we even get to the big celebrations, there are lots of smaller ones along the way: bridesmaids trips, groomsmen getaways, planning excursions and site visits for parties. We’ve selected three of our favorite locations which might just fit the bill for anything you have planned this spring. These are spacious mountaintop rooms with truly elegant amenities not often found at this altitude. One of the most coveted rooms might be the one with the large copper tub on the porch. Picture yourself taking in the moonrise, enveloped in and sipping on bubbles. Adjacent Chestnut Lodge features five other spaces while seven cabins and suites across the property provide truly intimate privacy. The Balsam Cottage is one of our personal favorites with fireplaces, a sauna, an outdoor shower and soaking tub, beckoning you after a long hike.

The Great Smokies Daytime on the mountain is your time – hours to explore the GSMNP on foot, with or without a guide, like one of the experts-in-residence who have been coming to the property for years. You may choose to amble down the lawn to one of the nooks tucked into the rhododendron-lined hillside, taking along the lunch that the kitchen made for you this morning. The Colquitts recognized and relished the respite of The Swag, having been guests and friends of the Matthews for so many years. A Hotel with a Romantic Past

Sugar White Sands

For some, there is no getaway like a beach getaway. We get that. For those folks, we suggest something different than your typical 30-A trip: The Hotel Don CeSar in St. Petersburg, Florida. Also known as The Pink Palace, this grand hotel sits majestically on the sugar-white sands of St. Pete, just a short drive from the Tampa airport.

Pink Palace History

The Don (as it is also known) enjoys a rich romantic past that is honored still today. Real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe built the resort in the height of the Great Gatsby era of 1928, as a tribute to the love of his life. The property attracted a number of notable guests, including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself and was quite the destination in its heyday before Rowe’s untimely death in 1940. Two years later, the United States Army purchased the property and used it as a place for returning WWII injured airmen to convalesce. After that, the hotel languished for several years before a group of investors lovingly brought it back to life.

Now a member of the National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America, much of the era’s panache can be felt in every corner of the hotel – from the vaulted ceilings of the marble-clad lobby to the wide breezeways to the guest rooms that feel very nautical in detail. There are grand ballrooms for large parties and sweeping vistas that recall that bygone era of grandeur. The hotel hosts weddings year-round where the Pink Palace feels like a de facto member of the party. While the hotel’s spa and idyllic beach setting are enough to keep guests on property, it would be a shame to miss some of the other fun things to do in the area.

In fact, take a page from New York Times’ best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks, who set his most recent romantic novel, Dreamland, at the Don CeSar, a site he visits yearly and has great affection for. Taylor Durham grew up in Hueytown, Alabama, where she was a small business owner for more than five years. During her time as a business owner, she won “Business of the year,” she served on the chamber board of directors, she was an ambassador for the city and she served on many other organizations within the city.

Taylor enjoys spending time with her family in her free time. She and her hus

band, Ryan, married in 2021.

Taylor is currently serving as the City of

Hoover Business Services Specialist. Her role is to serve as a case manager for businesses coming into the city and act as a liaison between the city’s different departments and business owners.

As a former small business owner, she is dedicated to making the process go as smoothly as possible and offering any assistance she can to business owners. Taylor looks forward to serving Hoover and working alongside the chamber to help make all businesses successful.

On Friday, Oct. 14 Hoover High School played Chelsea High School at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium for Hoover’s “Pink-Out” game. This game is significant because Hoover High School student Sara Hancock held a fundraiser for To The Fullest Foundation, which Sara helped form after losing her mother to breast cancer. For five years I had the pleasure of driving on Shades Crest Road every morning and evening on my commute to work. The variety of houses to look at and the view off the cliff never got old. I recommend anyone visiting Hoover for the first time to drive down Shades Crest Road, especially at sunset.

Living in Bluff Park as a child in the ‘80s was an incredible experience. I had friends on just about every street in the area. Riding bikes to Shades Cliff Pool, Western Supermarket (now Piggly Wiggly) and other areas of Bluff Park are memories that I will never forget. My family and I have lived in Riverchase for the past 10 years. We absolutely love the Riverchase community and living in this neighborhood.

I opened my gym, Hoover Fitness, in Bluff Park in 2007. After a complete renovation and remodel in 2022, we are starting our 16th year of business in Hoover. In addition to 24-hour DIY memberships, we specialize in training with our HF Elite group personal training, one-on-one personal training and our virtual personal trainer.

I was honored to be a member of the 2018-19 Leadership Hoover class. While I have lived in Hoover my entire life, this class was a great way to learn even more about the City of Hoover and many of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the city. It was also a great opportunity to develop quality relationships with other Hoover business leaders.
