A letter from the mayor From enjoying the changes in weather to shuttling kids around town, it’s that time of year where it seems like we are all going in a million different directions.

Spring activities are in full swing, and we are gearing up to put a bow on another school year. In the moments of running around 90 miles per hour, it is so important to stop for a second and enjoy everything that is around us in this amazing city we get to call home.

Over the last couple of months, a lot has been 4 CityOfHelena.org

happening around town, and I want to highlight some of the key moments. Let’s start off with the opening of Dunkin’ and Revolution Kickboxing.

Both businesses are packing a punch with their new business in Helena. More businesses will be opening soon, giving us more options to continue keeping our dollars local.

I can’t wait to see everyone around town enjoying everything that Helena has to offer.

Construction is well underway at the middle school, and the Shelby County Board of Education recently approved a bid to add eight more classrooms at Helena Intermediate School. These additions will give us much-needed space as more families begin to call Helena home. I want to thank Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks, the board members and everyone with the board of education.

Other construction updates included the main water line from Dearing Downs to Highway 17, which is now in service. This gives an improved infrastructure for that specific side of town. The new Cahaba River bridge on Highway 52 is now open, and the old bridge will be converted to… more to come.

Finally, the new right turn lane from Highway 17 onto Highway 58 is currently in the utility relocation assessment phase, and we should see construction begin this summer.

I want to congratulate the girls high school basketball team on their successful and historic season this year. All of the spring sports teams at both the middle and high schools are having great

seasons, and we all need to get out there to support all of these athletes as they represent our city.

Congratulations to the All-State choral participants for both the middle and high schools. We had 28 students from the two schools represent us at this year’s festival. The Helena Majorettes came in first place in the Open and State events recently, making them State Champions. I would also like to give a special congratulations to Madison Randall for winning the State Championship in Solo 2-Baton, and 3-Baton events.

We cannot end this letter without making sure everyone is gearing up for all of the Old Town Live concerts that will be happening this summer. There will be so many great bands coming through town that will provide great family fun each month. The Buck Creek Festival is right around the corner as well. This provides another great way to have free and fun time with the family, while celebrating the unique spirit of Helena. I can’t wait to see everyone around town enjoying everything that Helena has to offer.

In the News CAHABA RIVER BRIDGE IN HELENA OFFICIALLY OPENS FOR USE The Highway 52 bridge over the Cahaba River is officially open for use.

The bridge has undergone several layers of construction over recent months to update the overall structure, making it safer and more efficient for travel. The new bridge has wider lanes to to help with smooth traffic flow and ease some of the congested traffic issues previously experienced by residents.

BEEF O’BRADY’S HOLDS FIFTH ST. PATTY’S DAY PARTY Helena’s Beef O’Brady’s held its fifth annual St. Patty’s Day event on Saturday, March 19. The event offered live music, a bounce-house for kids, green beer with other Irish-themed drinks, and Irish pub food.

ALL-COUNTY BOYS TEAM FEATURES TWO YOUNG HELENA STARS The 2021-2022 All-County boys basketball team featured two Helena players who busted onto the scene as sophomores. Josh Williams, who finished second in the county in scoring with 18.9 points per game, and Ian Johnigan, who was just behind at 17 points per game, both made the Second Team this year.

HELENA HAS THREE MAKE ALL-COUNTY GIRLS TEAM The Helena Huskies had three girls basketball players make the 2021-2022 All-County girls basketball team, including Olivia Johnigan on the First Team, Alana Scott on the Second Team and Kennedi Nobles as an Honorable Mention player.

In the News HELENA SOCCER HOLDS SECOND ANNUAL MOTHER SON DANCE

The Helena High School cafeteria was full of fun and lively energy on Saturday, March 12 at the Helena Mother Son Dance. Hosted by the Helena soccer program, the dance invited moms with their sons to dress up, take photos and dance the night away.

BOE APPROVES CLASSROOM ADDITIONS IN HELENA The Shelby County Board of Education approved projects to add several new classrooms to Helena Intermediate School.

OWNER OF THE TIRE DOCTOR INC. TEAMS WITH LOCAL ARTIST FOR NEW MURAL Local artist Danielle Lang and Rayme Bryson, the owner of local business The Tire Doctor Inc., teamed up to create a special mural on the side of Bryson’s business. The mural is of a husky wearing sunglasses surrounded by a watercolor background. Bryson said he thought the mural was a fantastic way to give back to the Helena community.

HELENA BASEBALL CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE SEASON

Helena pitcher Cam Bailey has been big for the Huskies throughout the spring, and she picked up a perfect game against area foe Calera in a 10-0 win on March 21.

JACOB RITONDO ACHIEVES VALEDICTORIAN STATUS Helena High School’s Jacob Ritondo has officially achieved valedictorian status.

Ritondo shared how excited he was to finally receive a title he had been working toward since he was in middle school.

In the News HELENA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATTENDS DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY

Jaynie Grace Turner, a junior at Helena High School, recently attended the Disney Dreamers Academy for four days after winning an essay contest that earned her a coveted spot in the Disney Dreamers Class of 2022. Turner was one of five students from Alabama and only 100 selected nationwide to participate in the Dreamers Academy, an all-expenses-paid mentorship program founded in 2008 to give high school students with a dream the tools and resources needed to turn their big dreams into a reality.

HELENA GIRLS WIN AREA CHAMPIONSHIP The Helena girls soccer team won the 2022 area championship after taking down Chilton County, Calera and Pelham.

HELENA CITY COUNCIL APPROVES RESOLUTION TO WIDEN HIGHWAY 261

The Helena City Council approved a resolution to enter in an agreement with Alabama Department of Transportation to widen Highway 261. The resolution cements the plans to widen the highway for better traffic flow.

HELENA SOFTBALL WINS REGULAR-SEASON AREA TITLE The Helena softball team finished area play 6-0 in the regular season with wins against Chilton County, Calera and Pelham.

What do you love most about coaching?

Coaching provides me with a platform and opportunities to mentor the next generation of leaders, teach leadership/life skills through athletics and share the love of Jesus Christ to players and parents alike on and off the field.

In what ways do you try to inspire your team, and in what ways do they inspire you?

I try to inspire them by loving them unconditionally, leading by example and always having a positive, winning attitude. They inspire me with their neverending love and commitment to each other, the game of softball and their school/community.

What led you to coaching Helena softball?

My coaching career began in 1998 coaching football, basketball and baseball. I took the Riverchase Middle School (Pelham/ Helena Middle School) softball coaching job in 2001 only to get in line for a baseball coaching opportunity in the future. By the end of the first season, I had no interest in returning to my baseball roots. In 2007, Jenni Goolsby (1st Administrator of HMS) asked me to come to Helena and start the Helena Middle School Softball program. Fourteen seasons later, I am still here and loving every minute of it.

From this last year, what stands out to you as a favorite moment in the season?

Having daily opportunities to work with and mentor these outstanding young ladies and student-athletes. They love each other unconditionally, they want it more than their opponents, and they have more fun than their opponents.

Describe the feelings you get before a game.

Besides feeling a little nervousness, I feel a great sense of pride and excitement about my career path and watching the girls prepare to play. The sights, sounds and smells of the game are exciting and get my adrenaline pumping.

What makes Helena softball special?

First and foremost, the student-athletes are the ones that make this program special. I could not imagine having more outstanding young ladies than we have had in our program.

Secondly, it’s also the parents that make our program unique.

Our parents have not only supported us financially, but they have been super supportive of the players, coaches and administrators in our school. Finally, the community members and our many Helena city leaders and officials have made this into a remarkable place to play softball-- AND work, grow and live.

It’s probably not surprising to many of you that the City of Helena started with a love story.

The love between Helen Lee and Pete Boyle began a community that now extends from the beautiful highlands of Shades Crest to the peaceful lowlands of the Cahaba River Valley.

You are living in a community that has been recognized as one of the safest cities in Alabama and ranked one of the best places to live. But I want to talk to you about something more important than the community around you. I want to encourage you to become an active participant in your community this summer.

It is sometimes easy for a city to grow apart, instead of growing together. So, I am asking you all to come together to embrace your community and explore its unique local sights and events. This is an incredible time to enjoy Helena with your friends, family and neighbors.

The summer will begin with the Helena Farmers’ Market, which will be held at the Helena Amphitheater every Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. This weekly event will include chef demonstrations, live music, children’s activities and the best products from local farmers and artisans.

Do you like music? Helena is one of the host cities for the Jazz in the Park concert series and is the home of the Buck Creek Festival, which features two days of live music and events, including the South’s largest charity rubber duck race over a dam.

Also happening throughout the summer is the Old Town Live concert series. In addition, you can hear live performances from local musicians at Helena businesses every weekend, where you can meet and enjoy the company of your fellow Helenites.

If you prefer something quieter, you should consider taking in Helena’s natural beauty with a canoe ride down the Cahaba River, a jog on a Helena trail, a picnic in the park or a historic hike. Your children will love getting out and meeting new friends, exploring a new playground, fishing at Joe Tucker, visiting the museum or attending one of the weekly activities at the Helena library.

There is so much to do this summer in Helena. Please come and explore your community, challenge yourself to meet someone new, and try something different. We can’t wait to see you!

We hope this letter finds you well. The library is open and ready to serve you with loads of new books and movies, as well as neat plans for the spring and summer.

May is a big month for the library, as school is winding down and the summer is approaching.

As many of you know, the library has a fun summer reading program each year.

This year, the Summer Reading theme is “Oceans of Possibilities.”

Big plans are being made to provide a fun and exciting program with prizes, giveaways, programs and entertaining performers.

The program is simple, user friendly, and free!

Having a library card when you visit this summer can save you time and money, so be sure to stop by soon to get a new card or update your current one.

The Library would like to thank Helena High School National English Honor Society for its annual library book drive. Special thanks to Helena faculty members Mrs. Rigdon and Mrs. Compton.

This group has always worked hard to support the library, and we appreciate their efforts very much.

City Hall Faces

Meet James Penhale Helena Police Captain

If you’re a resident of Helena, odds are you’re familiar with Helena Police Capt. James Ivy Penhale. A lifelong resident of Helena, Ivy was just 10 years old when his father, Charles “Sonny” Penhale, was elected mayor of Helena.

Ivy has served with the Helena Police Department for 37 years, eight of which were serving as one of the chiefs for the K9 Unit from 1999 -2007. His K9 dog officer, Victor, was actually how he met his wife, Victoria, who he has been married to for more than 21 years.

His favorite thing about living and serving in the Helena community has been the people who he has had the privilege of meeting.

“It goes back to the people,” he said. “I’ve met so many good people over the years, and they were always quick to recognize the police department and thank us for our service. I love serving the people.”

Ivy retired from HPD officially on May 1. He said he’s very much looking forward to spending more time with his family, including his seven grandchildren.

What do you love about being principal of Helena Elementary?

I love being principal of Helena Elementary because it is in my community of 25 years. Being invested in the lives of our children is a true honor, especially since the impact is directly linked to my home.

As a parent with children in the Helena school system, what do you love about the education experience your children have received?

My children benefited from the relationships they had with their teachers and other adults in each school building. Each of my children will recall those strong advocates in their lives and how they felt supported, nurtured, encouraged and accepted unconditionally. Those they recall most fondly are those who made them feel seen and heard. Their existence was validated, and they knew they mattered.

What is the most special aspect of working with young children?

There is no love like that of a child. Being greeted inside our hallways, in Publix or eating at a local resturant, they make me feel like a superstar, when truly I am humbled to be their principal. Each day, I am fulfilled as I collaborate with others to provide a safe and happy environment for our children. My desire is that we can communicate to them that we believe in them and they are loved, no matter what.

How does it make you feel seeing the growth of Helena’s schools?

I am so proud to be affiliated with Helena schools. We are committed to success and excellence, and our faculty/staff is intentional in order to determine gaps and barriers to success in order to support students in overcoming those. Students come from various backgrounds and experiences, and I am so joyful to see how well they are achieving. I’m in awe of the dedication of HES faculty and staff.

How long have you been at Helena Elementary?

This is my first year at HES, but I spent seven years at HIS as the assistant principal before becoming principal of Calera Elementary.

What is the most important thing to teach children in this age bracket?

There are so many things that children learn at such an early age. We focus on “Our Husky Way - I am kind, I am safe, I am responsible,” and each of those “I am” statements can be applied across all settings and aspects of life. Something I valued for my own children is to work hard every day to fulfill their full potential and to be the best version of themselves. Each child is unique and special and that should be celebrated.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR THE ZOU FAMILY Residents of Helena are very familiar with the Zou family. Residents of Helena for 14 years, the family has carved a special place for themselves in the heart of the Helena community.

GuoYing (Vicky) and WenHui (Kevin) Zou are the owners of Helena favorite Zou’s Kitchen, which they run as a family with the help of their daughters, Sharon and Jessie.

Sharon and Jessie are both students at Helena High School. Jessie graduated in 2019 as valedictorian, and Sharon is set to graduate this May where she will then prepare to head to Cornell University in the fall.

The Zou family said their favorite thing about living in Helena is the strong, supportive community, while they also love that they get to interact with the community daily through their restaurant.

“Additionally, we love the Helena schools 28 CityOfHelena.org

and their great staff,” GuoYing and WenHui said. “Our daughters, Jessie and Sharon, have attended each of the Helena schools, and they both have had a wonderful time.”

In their spare time, they enjoy all of Helena’s various local events and activities.

“We enjoy going to city-wide events such as the Buck Creek festival, farmers market days and the Spring Fling,” they said. “We also enjoy having breakfast together out in Helena on the weekends.”

Through the years, the Helena community has not only supported Zou’s Kitchen, they’ve embraced the family as one of the many hearts of Helena that makes the city so special. They’ve worked to give back to the community through their businesses and supporting the various school and citywide functions as a thank you for their incredible support through the years.

When it was announced Sharon would

be attending Cornell in the fall, the Helena community responded with an abundance of positive and encouraging congratulations. It’s just more support from the community the Zou’s say they are very thankful for.

“It means so much to us, and we are so appreciative of the community around us,” GuoYing and WenHui said. “They have seen our two daughters grow up and now go to college. The Helena community has always supported us with our restaurant and our family – they are always rooting for us, and we will be forever grateful for them.”

For any families looking to move to Helena, the Zou family said they would definitely encourage families to move to the city, citing the amazing community, great schools and the plethora of things to do around town.

Since its inception, Helena High school has always strived to make the wellbeing of its students top priority. Behind some of the top educators in the state, each HHS student receives the most thorough education possible paired with multiple opportunities to serve as important members of the community and guiding them to learn who they are as people. We sat down with the the top eight students from this year’s senior class and asked them about their hopes, dreams and what they’ll miss about high school life in this special graduation edition of Helena – The Magazine. Each senior provided insightful and honest answers that are just a taste of how unique and diverse these future leaders really are.

JACOB RITONDO – VALEDICTORIAN What are your plans after graduation?

I have applied to Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University and Northwestern University, and I will attend one of these if I am accepted. Otherwise, I will attend the University of Alabama and study political science.

After getting my bachelor’s degree, I likely will attend graduate school to attain higher degrees in political science.

What will you miss most about high school?

I will miss eating lunch with my friends in the courtyard and spending time with them in clubs during Pack 60. Once high school ends, we likely won’t be able to spend time all together very often anymore.

What is your best memory in your high school career?

I went to the school’s production of “Love, Death and the Prom” last April to see some of my friends perform, and after, I took a picture with one of my then-senior friends named Madi. She posted the 30 CityOfHelena.org

picture on Instagram and immediately people assumed we were dating. Naturally, the best thing we could do was lean into this assumption and play a joke on everyone, and so we did; that was until we tragically “broke up” publicly a few days later.

What are you looking forward to experiencing after graduation?

I am looking forward to experiencing the newfound freedom you get after high school, where the whole world is finally open to you (except for establishments that explicitly offer “adult beverages”). I’m looking forward to being able to travel the world through study-abroad programs and continuing to learn the Spanish language by visiting Spanish-speaking countries like Spain. All in all, there’s a lot to look forward to.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

My biggest advice would be not to worry about having your whole life figured out; for now, just focus on the present moment and enjoying high school. Always save room for leisure activities!

LINDSEY MAY What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where I will be majoring in Psychology and running on their cross country and track teams. I want to eventually get my doctorate degree and become a clinical psychologist.

What will you miss most about high school?

The thing I will miss most are the lower classmen friends that I have made and the community at Helena.

What is your best memory in your high school career?

My best memory in high school is probably my first state cross country championship meet during my freshman year. It was so much fun to be able to travel with the team and compete.

What are you looking forward to experiencing after graduation?

After college, I’m looking forward to experiencing a new environment away from home for the first time, as well as all the new people I will meet.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

My advice for the underclassmen is to not take the time that you have for granted, it will fly by!

Enjoy the time you have with your friends and take advantage of any opportunity you may be given, and don’t be scared to get involved.

DREW CHANDLER What will you miss most about high school?

UAH does not have a marching band so I am really going to miss the band.

What is your best memory in your high school career?

The band’s 2022 spring trip was a really good trip. I was able to make a lot of new friends and grow closer to those I already knew.

What are you looking forward to experiencing after graduation?

I’m looking forward to being more in charge of my schedule and getting a job.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan on going to UAH to major in physics with a focus in astronomy.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

It’s important to balance school life and mental health. It’s good to do your work but you shouldn’t put your wellbeing on the back burner. Helena teachers are all understanding and can help with whenever there is too much on your plate.

SARAH GUZMAN What will you miss most about high school?

I will miss seeing my friends every day and the memories that were created through my high school experience with them.

What is your best memory in your high school career?

It’s hard to pick one memory, but the best times I had at school were when I had lunch with my friends and laughed a lot.

How do you feel Helena High School has prepped you for the future?

Helena High School has allowed me to improve my work ethic, further my social skills and be more confident outside of my comfort zone.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham where I will be majoring in Digital Forensics.

What has been your favorite thing about being a senior this year?

I was able to relax more knowing that my hard work for the past three years would finally pay off.

SHARON ZOU What are your plans after graduation?

Studying at Cornell. My major is currently government (aka political science) but [I’m] still kind of undecided. [I] want to work in law or tech after college.

What will you miss most about high school?

My friends and great teachers.

What is your best memory in your high school career?

Pack 60 (aka lunch) with friends throughout the years and homecoming.

What are you looking forward to experiencing after graduation?

College and independence/sense of freedom.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

Start early in everything, but don’t burn yourself out, as in don’t procrastinate your assignments but also know when you’ve done enough. Know your limits. Don’t put overwhelming pressure on yourself. Sometimes your best is all you can do 32 CityOfHelena.org

(cheesy but true). TRY TRY TRY! If there is something you are even remotely interested in, please apply because you will regret it if you do not!

Enjoy high school because you are kind of stuck in it for a few more years so make the best of it!

SAMUEL “HAMPTON” NEUGENT What are your plans after graduation?

I plan on attending the University of Alabama and majoring in music education with a minor in history.

What will you miss most about high school?

I will definitely miss the friendships and opportunities to serve the Lord that came during my time with the Briarwood Youth Group, the high school ministry of my church.

What is your best memory in your high school career?

My best memory in high school is by far the time when I participated in the Alabama Music Teachers Association piano competition. The competition took place during the 2020 lockdown; therefore I was able to invest more time into that audition than I ever would have dreamed.

After I finished recording my final piece I looked over to my dad and he was crying. To be able to make him proud in that way, through my hard work, made that moment one of the greatest in my short life and easily my best memory in high school.

What are you looking forward to experiencing after graduation?

After graduation, I am looking forward to participating in the Million Dollar Band of the University of Alabama and having the privilege to represent my school while making beautiful music to honor the Lord.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

Some advice I would give to underclassmen would be to never rely on talent or skill alone, but always pair talent with hard work.

Only then are you guaranteed your best shot at success, no matter what field you’re in. However, I would also caution them that success in any arena will not bring long-term happiness. Just look at Tom Brady, who famously said after winning his third Super Bowl, “It’s gotta be more than this…what else is there for me?”

Only in Christ Jesus can anyone find joy and satisfaction, because as our Creator, He is the only one who can give us purpose and meaning in life. So, turn to Him, acknowledge your failures and sins, and allow your Creator and Sustainer to take back control of your life so that you may accomplish your true purpose in life: to bring honor to your God and love and enjoy Him forever.

KAITLIN GLAWSON What will you miss most about high school?

I will definitely miss cheering at Friday night football games with my friends.

What is your best memory in your high school career?

My best high school memory is performing at pep rallies. I love doing a routine in front of the school!

What are you looking forward to experiencing after graduation?

After graduation, I look forward to meeting new people at college orientation and in the fall. I am also excited for what college holds for me and everything new I will experience.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

Helena’s Buck Creek Festival

HELENA’S BUCK CREEK FESTIVAL IS BACK Helena’s premier music festival, Helena’s Buck Creek Festival kicks off May 13 for another year of music, food and the iconic duck race! This free, family-friendly event provides plenty of fun for the whole family including crafts, children’s activities, food, beverages, and of course live music. Held at Helena Amphitheater Park.

It’s a festival not to be missed.

Saturday morning, the festival opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 10 p.m. with something for everyone. Saturday’s performances include Taylor Hunnicutt and Winston Ramble.

Some of the area’s best food, craft merchants, clothing vendors, along with some great brews will make this a festival to remember. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, crowds will gather along Buck Creek to witness the famed duck race! All proceeds from this annual race through the raffle tickets will go to the Helena High School band. The winning duck will receive first prize and a $500 reward. Raffle tickets are scheduled to go on sale around April 15, with details and locations to be announced.

More information on the musical lineup and vendor announcements will be released closer to the event.

Why I love Helena I remember the first time visiting Helena when we moved here from Mississippi. We kept revisiting and knowing that we wanted to raise our kids here. It reminds us of home, and now, this has been home for 16 years. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. The people here are genuine.

The Depot Regular cheeseburger and adding an onion ring to it. It’s not on the menu, but they let me order it. The best burgers around!

Favorite Helena Memory My favorite memory is the first day of school when my children were in elementary school—Kya in kindergarten and Kirsen in second grade.

All the kids on the street were playing while waiting on the bus. It was a joy to see them so excited about starting school. I grew up in a rural area and didn’t have any children to play with. So I was glad for my girls to be able to grow up in neighborhood with other children around. Now they are all off to college. I still look at the bus stop and remember that day.
