April was a month of fun, connection, and celebration here in Helena. The kickoff to the Old Town Live presented by Central State Bank concert series was a huge success. JJ Grey and Mofro delivered an unforgettable performance, and the turnout was absolutely phenomenal. HELENA OPENS UP 2025 SEASON OF OLD TOWN LIVE

BY TYLER RALEY PHOTO BY JEREMY RAINES HELENA – With the sun shining and the temperature foreshadowing the seasons to come, residents from Helena and beyond came together at the Helena Amphitheater to kick off the 2025 series of Helena Old Town Live on Saturday, April 5.

With performances from southern rock artist Paul Thorn and rock band JJ Grey & Mofro, those in attendance got the opportunity to enjoy many serenading sounds once again, signifying that summer was soon on its way.

Helena City Council member Laura Joseph shared her positive takeaway from how the first 14 CityOfHelena.org

concert of 2025 went, discussing how much she enjoyed the atmosphere.

“The first Old Town Live event of this year surpassed expectations,” Joseph said. “The crowd was one of the largest we’ve ever had, the artists put on a great show and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. It was a wonderful way to kick off this season—I couldn’t be happier.”

During the concert, patrons were also able to grab a bite to eat at a variety of food trucks. Adults could also grab drinks from Oversoul Brewing and enjoy themselves while kids could run around the open

field near Buck Creek.

Joseph emphasized how much it meant for the entire city to be able to join for a night of fun and make an event like this successful.

“It’s really fulfilling, especially for the volunteers on the (Helena Old Town) Board who help make these events happen,” Joseph said. “To see something we’ve worked so hard on being enjoyed by so many people. It means a lot to know that these events have a lot of community support.”

Old Town Live is an annual concert series that has quickly become one of the biggest events to attend in Helena. Organized by the city’s HOT Board, Old Town Live receives a lot of support from volunteer efforts and the help of local businesses.

Being in its fifth year of existence, Joseph has enjoyed watching it grow from the smaller event it used to be to its bigger form now, welcoming thousands to Old Town.

“I remember when we first started out, we were thrilled to have a couple hundred people show up, and now crowds are in the thousands for each event,” Joseph said. “It’s really a testament to the hard work that the HOT Board has put in to grow

Old Town Live into the huge event it’s become.

They’ve taken everything they’ve learned from previous years, and each season it just keeps getting better and better.”

Joseph also took the time to thank the members on the HOT Board for all of the work they have put in in order to make the concert series possible, knowing this could not be done without them.

“I can’t say enough about how thankful I am for this wonderful group of people,” Joseph said.

“They’re all volunteers who love working hard and serving our community, and honestly, they’re just a great group of humans to hang out with. Every month, they come out, help set up and ensure everything goes smoothly and it doesn’t matter if it’s hot, muddy, raining or whatever else—they’re dedicated to making sure that every concert in the series is a top-notch production and I think they deserve a ton of thanks and praise for everything they do.”

The next edition of the Helena Old Town Live series is set for Saturday, May 17, and will feature the talents of Birmingham singer-songwriter Drayton Farley, John R. Miller and local artist LeAlan Carter.

Library Update

GREETINGS FROM THE JANE B. HOLMES LIBRARY

Summer is almost here, so it’s time to start thinking about the library summer reading program. Back by popular demand and to make sure you keep your reading skills sharp throughout the summer, the annual summer reading program is free, fun and offers something for the entire family.

For 2025, the theme is Color Our World. We invite you to embark on a journey of art and creativity, celebrating the ways in which art enriches our lives.

The program is designed to inspire and engage readers of all ages, and begins on Tuesday, May 27. The last day to claim prizes is Saturday, July 12.

Patrons can look forward to fun prizes for reaching Library Director reading goals and enjoying Dan Dearing some great events. This summer will feature a program with live animals, the annual visit from the McWane Science Center, programs from our brave friends at the Helena Police and Fire Departments, as well as a magician! Of course, we will have many other programs such as storytime twice a week at 11:00 a.m., Board Game Fun on Fridays and many more. Once again, the National English Honor Society held a book drive for the library. This motivated group of top students brought in some great books for our library and community. Their sponsor, Helena High School English teacher Lindsey Rigdon, works very hard to make this project happen, and the library staff looks forward to it each year. Also, special thanks to Dr. Michelle Wilson and Mrs. Mallory Swinsick from the high school library for their assistance.

Please visit the library soon, and for those of you with younger children, check out our storytime. This is a fun event with stories, singalongs and music that will keep young people moving. Storytime is every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. throughout the year and it is a great way for your preschooler to learn and meet others in your community.

Tell me a bit about yourself.

My name is Ryan, and I’m currently a senior at Helena High School. I’m really into sports medicine and how the body works. I also train little kids teaching them the basics and fundamentals of the game. Outside of school, I enjoy hanging out with friends and family.

What inspired you to start playing soccer?

I started playing soccer simply because it was something I really enjoyed as a kid. Over time, I’ve loved the journey of working hard to improve my skills and seeing that hard work pay off. It’s been a really rewarding experience.

How old were you when you started playing?

I started playing at 3 years old for a YMCA team called the Crickets.

Has there ever been a coach or mentor that made a huge impact on you? What did they teach you?

My club coach, coach Doug, has made a huge impact on me over the years. He’s always been there for me, not just as a coach but as a mentor who genuinely cares. He constantly pushes me to be the best player I can be and challenges me to go beyond what I think I’m capable of. What’s really made a difference is that he truly believes in me—even when I’ve doubted myself. That kind of support has helped build my confidence, not just in soccer but in life overall.

What is your favorite thing about playing for coach Koch?

My favorite thing about playing for coach Koch is how much she cares about both the team and each individual player. She creates an environment where we’re pushed to compete and grow, but she also makes sure we’re supported and learning along the way.

What strengths do you believe make you a great athlete?

I’m highly disciplined and determined, always pushing myself to improve and stay focused on my goals. I have a strong work ethic that drives me to give 100 percent in everything I do, and I love to support and motivate my teammates.

What is your favorite soccer memory?

One of my favorite soccer memories was our trip to Foley last year. We were lucky to stay in a beach house right on the water and it was an unforgettable experience bonding with my teammates and making great memories. I also had the amazing opportunity to spend last summer in Europe playing soccer, which was truly an experience of a lifetime.

When you’re not in school or playing sports, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

When I’m not in school or playing sports, I love spending quality time with my family, friends and my girlfriend. I enjoy being outdoors as much as possible, and in my downtime, I like building Legos and watching movies to relax.

First, tell me more about yourself.

I’m someone who has always loved working with children.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to be in a role where I could make a difference in the lives of others, and teaching gave me that opportunity. I’ve spent 13 years in elementary education, and it has brought so much joy and purpose into my life.

Outside of school, I love spending time with my family, reading and doing anything outdoors that helps me recharge.

Can you tell me about your career in education?

I began teaching right after college and have been in the classroom ever since. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of teaching so many wonderful children, each with their own unique personality, strengths and stories. I’ve taught mostly upper grades, but most of my experience is with fifth grade. I’m passionate about helping young learners build strong foundations—not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. I’ve also been involved in curriculum planning and mentoring new teachers, which has been incredibly rewarding.

What kind of impact do the students you teach have on your life as a teacher?

My students are the heart of everything I do. They inspire me with their courage, their kindness and their curiosity. Even on the hardest days, they remind me why this work matters. Their creativity and resilience constantly remind me why I chose this profession. Watching them grow, seeing that moment when a concept finally clicks or hearing their stories and laughter— it’s those moments that stay with me. They teach me just as much as I teach them—about patience, kindness and the joy of learning.

What has been your favorite thing about working at HIS over the course of your time?

HIS is a place filled with love and support. The people here— our students, families, teachers and staff—truly care about one another. My favorite thing about working at HIS has been the sense of community. The staff, students and families all come together to support one another, and that creates such a warm and welcoming environment. The Henderson Family

Being able to watch your kids become heavily involved in the city that you raised them in is a special sight, and when they have helped you many close friendships that still remain today, it makes it all the more sentimental.

Lizzie Henderson has lived in Helena since 1997, and since then, has grown to spend many days cheering on her family.

It all starts with her husband, Brandon, who works for the city’s Parks and Recreation department. The two met in 2015, got married in 2016 and settled in the city in 2017. With Brandon’s involvement in the department, it was a no-doubter that their children would be involved in the city’s athletic programs.

AvaMarie, age 8, the Hendersons have watched their kids participate in softball, baseball, football, flag football, basketball, soccer and cheer, loving to support them in everything that they do.

Through watching their kids in athletics, Lizzie says she has loved meeting the other families while watching her kids grow and making connections that they still have today.

The Hendersons reside in Helena because it is where Lizzie grew up and where she wanted her kids to go receive their education, as she is an alumna of Helena herself. What has made them stay however is the small-town feel that the city provides and the multitude of things to do each day.

Jeffrey Nelson

Superintendent of The Helena Utility Board Water is an important necessity of life, and while it is not just for drinking, it plays a vital role in life. Someone has to help control that though, and if you live in Helena, that person is Jeffrey Nelson, superintendent the Helena Utility Board.

With a life rooted in the city of Helena, Nelson has had a deep history with the utility board. He began working for the board in 2007 as a laborer, and in 2012, earned his Grade 2 water certification.

Since he began, Nelson has gained knowledge and experience across every position that the board has to offer. On Oct. 1, 2024, he was appointed to the

superintendent position, taking his place at the top of the Helena Utilities Board.

As a result of being in his position, Nelson helps to oversee the planning, operating and maintenance of providing high-quality water to the city’s residents for drinking, while also supplying water for local industries to manufacture goods and protecting the region’s water resources.

Nelson is a lifetime resident of Helena. He has been married to his wife, Brandy, for 14 years and has an 11-yearold daughter named Ryleigh Kate. Ryleigh Kate, because of her father’s decision to stay in the city, plans to be deeply rooted in Helena as well.

Welcoming Mike Wood to Helena

When you see all of vehicles that say “Helena Police” on them, there is now a new face associated with them. However, you might be more familiar with the face than you might think.

On Monday, April 14, Mike Wood was sworn in as the new police chief of the Helena Police Department, officially putting him at the top of law enforcement in the city.

A current resident of Helena, Wood served the last 30 years in many positions with the Bessemer Police Department, and previously held the police chief position of the department since April 2023.

Now stepping into a new role, Wood is excited for what is to come, but also understands the surroundings of being the head of law enforcement in the city in which he lives.

“I saw a need (in Helena), and I felt it was time

to do something about it,” Wood said. “I think that it’s going to be exciting. It’s also kind of scary because you are stepping into where you live.

People hold you to a little higher standard because you are from here, but you kind of need that sometimes.”

Wood brings a community-first approach into Helena and hopes that his efforts of getting people to band together and allowing the HPD to be involved with the city will help in the long run.

“It’s not going to be overnight, but I really want us to be much more transparent, much more involved in the community,” Wood said. “I think the Helena Police Department is very involved in the community as it is, but I think we can do better.

I think we can get out there a little more and actually interact with the community a lot.”

Live your life to the fullest. Life is unpredictable, you never know what could happen, so live the life you’ve always dreamed of.

What is your best memory of high school?

My best high school memory is senior Homecoming Week. It was so fun to be able to go all out for my last year and I really enjoyed it.

What is your number one study tip?

My number one study tip is to do practice questions. Going into

high school, I did not really know how to study. Once I started engaging in practice material rather than just rereading notes, I understood everything so much better.

What are you looking forward to most about experiencing graduation?

I am most excited to begin the next portion of my life and witness my friends begin theirs. I am looking forward to seeing everyone walk across the stage and finally earning what we have all been working towards.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I will be attending the University of Georgia. I am majoring in psychology with an emphasis in neuroscience with hopes to eventually become a psychiatrist.

SOPHIA HOWELL during my time in high school. I was in her class for Spanish II and now for AP Spanish, and she continuously makes me and every other student feel so appreciated and heard each and every day.

What is your best memory of high school?

Decorating the school hallways for homecoming week. Every year for SGA we get to do this and it is so fun and special to work together and create something for the whole school to see.

Do you have any advice for underclassmen?

Enjoy every day. Don’t be afraid to try new things and meet new people during your time in high school because it will be over before you know it. These four years are for figuring out who you are and having fun.

What are you looking forward to most about graduation?

I’m looking forward to seeing all of my friends walk across the stage I’m involved in SGA, where I’m the senior class treasurer. I am also involved in Big Brother Big Sister, where I am a mentor to a student at with me. I am so proud of everyone that I have gone through high school with and being all together one last time will be so sentimental.

What is the best piece of advice that you have received?

The best piece of advice that I have received is to say yes to everything. Try new things, take advantage of every opportunity, keep believing in yourself and truly, the stars are the limit.

What is your number one study tip?

My number one study tip is to personalize your material.

Methods like word associations and finding similarities within concepts is one thousand times more helpful than attempting to learn in a way that was meant for someone else to understand.

Get plenty of rest, pay attention in class and ask as many questions as you need to. Take advantage of the practice material your teacher gives you and don’t be afraid to seek help outside of class, whether that be from friends or faculty.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I plan to pursue my love for the arts by majoring in acting at Ithaca College or Musical Theatre at Norwalk Conservatory of the Arts. From there I plan to not only perform on stage and in film but also write and direct my own productions!

ELIJAH ANDREWS What extracurriculars are you involved in at school?

I have had the privilege of participating in some of Helena High School’s excellent extracurricular opportunities during my time here.

I have been a member of the varsity tennis team since my sophomore year, and am currently a member of our school’s “Peer Helper” organization.

What teacher or staff member has been particularly influential for you?

As my tennis coach for the past four years, as well as my tenth grade AP U.S. history teacher, Mr. (Brandon) McCabe has always shown an obvious commitment to the success and growth of his players and students, as well as been someone I enjoy and trust talking to.

What is your best memory of high school?

Some of my best memories of high school have come from sporting or school spirit events. Over the years I have made many great memories with my friends during pep rallies, football games, basketball games and even my own tennis matches.

What is your number one study tip?

My number one study tip is to try to explain things out loud.

The way I have always known if I truly understand a set of

material is if I am able to adequately explain it verbally, as if I am trying to teach it to an imaginary group of people.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to attend the University of Alabama as a chemistry major and a member of the Randall Research Scholars Program. Beyond that, I hope to pursue some sort of graduate degree and go into a particular area of medical research.

You are the only person you need to be good enough for.

What is your best memory of high school?

The whole week of senior homecoming. Before the week even started I had so much fun decorating the school with SGA one last time. Then throughout the week I went all out dressing up and participating in all of the games and just making the most of it as it would be my last time to do something like this.

I am involved in SGA, Peer Helpers, cross country and track and field.

Do you have any advice for underclassmen?

Get involved. Go to the games, be loud at pep rallies, join clubs and organizations. They are great ways to meet new people and make new friends as well as making high school much more exciting. After all high school is what you make it so try and make it as fun as possible.

What is the best piece of advice that you have received?

My mom has always told me that failure is an opportunity to learn. She often related it to sports, but the same idea has always helped me in academics. I think it’s important to know that it is ok to not be perfect all the time.

What’s your number one study tip?

For me, I have always found it easiest to study when I make some form of flashcards, whether that be physical or online. This helps me review while I’m making them and makes it easy to study once they’re done.

Andy Hayes managed the University of Alabama basketball’s chaos while carrying on a larger legacy

Alabama basketball completed another run to the Elite Eight, and one of Helena’s own had a front-row seat to the action all season long.

Andy Hayes, a Helena native and Helena High School graduate, served as the president of Crimson Chaos, Alabama basketball’s student section this season. The opportunity came after being involved in the group’s leadership staff in different capacities since his freshman year at the university.

Hayes’ love for Alabama basketball dates back to when deep runs in the NCAA Tournament were nothing but wishful thinking.

“I grew up playing a little bit of basketball as a

kid and I had (Alabama) games on the TV when I was really young, back when they weren’t very good and I just fell in love with it,” Hayes said.

“Everyone loves (Alabama) football, and I do too, but there was just something about basketball that captivated my interest.”

Hayes’ involvement in Crimson Chaos began at a pivotal time in the organization, right after Luke Ratliff, an Alabama basketball superfan who is often credited for building the student section into what it is today, passed away due to COVID-19 complications in 2021.

Blake Bullock, one of Ratliff’s best friends and another Helena High graduate, took over as the CityOfHelena.org 35

organization’s president and recruited Hayes to serve alongside him. “(Bullock) knew I liked Alabama basketball and ended up asking me if I was looking to get involved, I said absolutely,” Hayes said. “I didn’t get the chance to know Luke personally, but obviously watching the program and keeping up with it, I very much knew who he was.”

Hayes immediately knew that he wanted to help continue carry on Ratliff’s legacy and the passion that he elevated with the Crimson Chaos.

“As soon as I had the opportunity to help carry this thing on after he unfortunately passed away, 36 CityOfHelena.org

I knew it was something I wanted to get involved in,” Hayes said.

Filling the shoes of a legendary figure within the program is an honor Hayes does not take lightly. He has had the opportunity to get close to people who were close to Ratliff, adding fuel to his passion for building the best possible environment at Alabama basketball games.

“I do have a relationship with his mom, Mrs. Pam Ratliff—she’s just the best,” Hayes said.

“It’s just meant a lot to carry on what he created.

I hear the stories about how there wasn’t a lot of student engagement.”

Hayes emphasized that Ratliff got the student engagement up to an all-time high even when Alabama’s program was not the most successful, crediting the work he did as the president of the student section.

“A lot of people think we have student engagement now because of success on the court—and that absolutely helps—but Luke had this thing rolling (Nate) Oats’ first year when we were like 19-15 and this place was packed out,” Hayes said.

Hayes first served as the organization’s secretary and held other titles before being

named as the vice president before the 2023-24 season. Following Alabama’s historic run to the Final Four that year, Hayes was selected for the role of president, something he had been working toward since arriving on campus.

“There was a lot of excitement last year and then kind of right after that they asked me if I would be looking to step into the role as president and of course that was a very easy answer,” Hayes said. “From there it was all about setting up a great team around me.”

“A lot of times I get to Coleman around five or six hours before tip-off,” Hayes said. “We usually already have some students lined up so just making sure they didn’t have any needs, making sure they were all taken care of. Just making sure everything was set up and ready to go.”

Hayes went on to discuss how although the

days were sometimes long, he would not trade them for anything else.

“They were exhausting, busy, but they were so rewarding,” Hayes said. “Some of my favorite college memories came in Coleman Coliseum on those long days, so I’m gonna miss them for sure.”

Hayes has been there for some of the biggest moments in the history of Alabama basketball.

From SEC Championship-securing wins to witnessing the team advance to its first Final Four, Hayes has had no shortage of memorable basketball to watch.

“Obviously, a lot of the big wins have brought some great memories,” Hayes said. “My sophomore year we won a double (championship) in the SEC. We won the regular season at home against Auburn in overtime and that was really special to get to wrap that up at home.”

However, seeing the wins was not the only great memories that Hayes had while leading the 40 CityOfHelena.org

student body at Alabama basketball games. He credits a lot of his fond memories to the friends he shared it with along the way, knowing he could not have done what he did without them.

“A lot of my favorite memories just came spending time with some of my best friends that did this with me, whether it was in Tuscaloosa or somewhere else,” Hayes said. “Of course winning games and hanging some banners helped a lot too, but really just getting to make memories with my buddies is what was most special to me.”

Alabama basketball has reached a new level of consistent competitiveness, more so than many ever thought to be possible.

Hayes had a role to play in getting his peers to buy in, something he spent the majority of his time as a student working to accomplish.

The Tuscaloosa community has made an impact on Hayes in addition to the university, and he plans to stick around as a result.

He graduates in May with a bachelor’s degree in operations management. After he walks across the stage, he will begin a job as a process improvement engineer in Tuscaloosa.

No matter where life takes him though, Hayes will always remember the journey he took with the Crimson Tide, but more importantly, the great legacy of Ratliff that he carried on.

Getting the necessities Heading to Helena Drugs Dr. (Ryan) Taylor and his staff know me by name which is either a really good thing or it’s a really bad thing. I’ll go with it being good.

Cheers to the holidays Spreading Christmas spirit My sons Tucker and Calvin have been in the Helena high school marching band for years, and my daughter Gigi will be in it this fall. The band is the heartbeat of the parade and it’s a joy to celebrate the kids and finish out a very full fall schedule.
