Beating cancer with books By WESLEY HALLMAN Sports Editor Oak Mountain High School senior Mark Newton often sat in a hospital room in the spring of 2009 receiving chemotherapy treatments for the cancer in his neck and chest. Newton didn’t question why he was in his predicament or focus his thoughts on his health. Newton had more important things to worry about. He had put too much time and effort into attaining one of the highest grade point averages in his class, and he wasn’t about to let Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer claim his future as well as his present. “I thought to myself, no matter what happens, I’m not going to let myself get behind,” Newton said. “I worked hard to be at the top of my class. I wasn’t going to lose it.” Newton, who had surgery March 10, 2009 to remove a cancerous tumor after enduring pain in his shoulder for a few months, kept himself occupied in his hospital room by reading his textbooks and completing his schoolwork.
The cancer claimed his sophomore season on the tennis court, but it didn’t take away his chances of an academic scholarship. Newton, who plans to attend the University of Alabama, kept his grades up and earned a $2,500 scholarship after being named a BryantJordan Award scholarship recipient this spring. Newton, who was named a Bryant-Jordan region winner and state finalist, was recognized during a ceremony April 11 at the Sheraton Hotel Ballroom in downtown Birmingham. “It really meant the world to me,” Newton said. “I give glory to God in every situation. All the hard work paid off.” Newton recovered after his surgery and returned to the tennis court as a member of the Oak Mountain boys’ tennis team during his junior and senior year. Newton’s senior year was cut short March 28 when doctors noticed a lesion on his right lung. He was disappointed he had to miss the Shelby County tournament and the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A section tournament, but

Newton felt relief when he found out the spot was simply scar tissue. “It was worth it when I found out it was something that wouldn’t affect my future,” Newton said. “It was a big sigh of relief.” Newton even found a
silver lining in the disappointing news. He and his No. 3 doubles’ partner finished the season unbeaten during the regular season. “It was pretty neat to finish undefeated,” Newton said.
Leading life’s drill Answering the call for help By KATIE HURST Lifestyles Editor
On days when other high school seniors are watching TV or relaxing at home, Sinitha Walker of Vincent High School is hard at work. Whether in her dress military uniform or regular school clothes, Walker is always prepared to get the job done as a member of Vincent’s JROTC program. With plans to enter the Navy after high school graduation, Walker said her four years in JROTC have been both fulfilling and preparatory for her. From practicing the military drills to keeping physically fit, Walker said she can’t choose just one favorite part of the program. “Every bit of it,” she said. “It’s not like I do it for just one thing. We go on trips and help people, we do drills. It’s not a sit-on-your-butt kind of thing. You’ve got to get up and do something.” One of the aspects she loves about the program is the volunteer work, she said. The group puts on a community Christmas bazaar each year, volunteers at the 4H Center and does the down-anddirty work of community painting and clean up.
Between keeping up a 3.5 grade point average and working part-time after school, Walker also volunteers on her own time as a teacher aide for a legally blind Vincent Middle School teacher. This drive to help others led Walker to JROTC and the pursuit of a military career after high school. “My freshman year, joining the military set in my head really hard,” she said. “I wanted a way I could improve my life so I can improve the lives of others.” Walker is currently in the recruitment process with the Navy and hopes to work in computer engineering, she said. Originally from Florida, Walker said she’s looking forward to being back on the ocean. In a traditionally maledominated field, Walker said the half-female, halfmale Vincent JROTC team is sometimes the exception. However, she found the females’ drive to get things done and help others in the process has proved beneficial to the program. “Here, it’s almost like the girls are more manly than the guys are sometimes,” she joked. “They have more instincts to do this then the boys.”
By KATIE HURST Lifestyles Editor Like many teenagers, Chelsea senior Valerie King spends numerous hours each week on the phone. However, instead of chatting with friends about weekend plans or the latest gossip, King’s phone time is spent counseling other teenagers through dilemmas from homework to heartache. King is a Teen Link hotline volunteer for the Birmingham-based Crisis Center and spends several hours a week manning the phone lines for those reaching out for help. King underwent months of training to fill this role and has been answering the phone at Teen Link for two years now. In a normal volunteer shift, she said she addresses issues such as dating, drugs, depression, self-image, anger, violence, pregnancy, suicide and divorce. “Any issue a normal teenager would face, I’ve dealt with over the phone,” she said. “Statistics have shown just having someone to listen and talk to can be beneficial. All they really need is someone to lis-

ten.” King’s work at Teen Link has given her a passion for counseling that she hopes to pursue after high school graduation. She has been accepted into Evangel University, a Christian university in Springfield, Mo., and plans to major in biology and psychology. She said she hopes to one day work in a juvenile prison as a psychiatrist or work overseas as a sex trafficking counselor.
“I’ve always loved meeting and helping people so counseling just naturally called to me,” she said. “It is captivating and I have loved every minute of it. If I’m going to do something, I need to do it all the way.” King, who has a high-A grade point average and scored a 32 on her ACT, even gave up the slot as class valedictorian in order to help others. In order to be a part of the Chelsea High School
student group and credit class Peer Helpers, King passed on enrolling in an upper level math class that would have sealed her fate as valedictorian. Instead, she worked with other Peer Helpers students in school-wide service projects, peer counseling, mediation and tutoring. “I absolutely don’t regret it,” she said. “It has let me follow my heart and not stress about the numbers game.”
First-place role model By CHRISTINE BOATWRIGHT Staff Writer HOOVER — Distinguished Young Women, formerly America’s Junior Miss, is not a beauty pageant; it’s a scholarship program. Danielle DuBose was named Alabama’s Distinguished Young Woman of 2011 after she won the title of Shelby County Junior Miss. A senior at Spain Park High School, DuBose explained how the competition involved more than ball gowns and bikinis. “Distinguished Young Women is about building self-confidence and self esteem in young peo-
ple,” Dubose said. “We all have different abilities, and we’re unique. It’s about being healthy, involved, studious, ambitious and responsible.” DuBose traveled to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Montevallo and Bessemer to promote “Be Your Best Self Week” on April 25-26. She worked with the children to create cards for sick children at Children’s Hospital. She also did jumping jacks and stretches with the children to promote physical fitness and spoke about healthy eating habits. DuBose had to show her own physical fitness by performing a cardio routine, military pushups and other health-
related activities during the competition. The titles mean more to her than wearing a medal, which the Distinguished Young Women wear instead of a tiara, DuBose said. “It means more to me than a title,” she said. “I’m a role model for younger girls.” On top of winning her title, DuBose is seventh in her graduating class. She said she always wanted to be in the top 10. She’ll be attending the University of Alabama in the fall. “I’ve always known I wanted to go there,” she said. “It’s a huge family tradition.” She plans to double major in accounting and

political science before attending law school. She said she wants to specialize in constitu-
tional law. “In my government class, I learned about the vision our founders had
for this country. I think laws should keep with American principles,” she said.

Designing her future By AMY JONES Associate Editor

INDIAN SPRINGS — When Sara Clark visited her grandmother in Florence growing up, there wasn’t much to do in the area. To keep young Sara busy, her grandmother taught her to sew and quilt, sharing her love of creating useable art. Those lessons in love helped propel Clark, now a graduating senior at Indian Springs School, into her life’s goal. She uses her expertise at sewing and quilting to fashion clothes and purses. “I did it with my grandmother when I was younger and I’ve loved it
ever since,” she said. “I’m keeping the tradition and the heritage alive.” Clark said she’s inspired by her grandmother, and also by other Southern designers in Florence, including sportswear designers Billy Reid and Natalie Chanin. Some of her pieces have been sold through a retail store in Seaside, Fla. Clark said her dream is to have her own line of clothing, purses and jewelry. In order to accomplish that dream, Clark will attend North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. She has been accepted into the Anni Albers Scholars
Program at N.C. State and will study in both the College of Textiles and the College of Design, earning two undergraduate degrees in a five-year program. Clark has used her quilting skills to excel at different kinds of art. She participated in an eight-week youth apprenticeship program at Birmingham’s Sloss Furnaces, where she worked with cast iron and steel sculpture. While in the program, she won second place in a competition among the participants for a fabric, wood, metal and leather quilt she formed. She said winning that prize was one of her
proudest moments. “I put so much into it,” she said. “I put together all the parts of my heritage and myself.” Sara incorporates art into every part of her life, even her graduation day. She purchased an early1900s wedding dress and is using the dress fabric to make her own graduation dress even more personal. “It’s just the way I’ve been able to express myself. I just fell in love with fabric,” she said. “If I didn’t do something with art, I’d never be happy as I got older. It’s just what I love to do and what I’ve always wanted to do. I’m so lucky I figured out at a young age what I wanted to do.”
Paging Dr. Ameen Barghi By CHRISTINE BOATWRIGHT Staff Writer At 18, Ameen Barghi has already conducted stroke research at UAB, published papers on the topic and received an early medical school acceptance to UAB. “I started volunteering at UAB hospital, but the man I was working for said I shouldn’t waste my time volunteering,” Barghi said. “I started doing research with him. “Helping people was great, but nothing comes of it if it’s not doing anything (in the long run),” he added. Barghi’s research revolved around tracing the MRIs of strokes, multiple sclerosis and pediatrics. He said he intends to attend UAB medical school to become a neurosurgeon.
“I enjoy neuroscience because most of my medical experience is in that field, and although I’ve shadowed doctors in other fields, I seem to think that most of the ‘unknowns’ in medicine stem from neurological disorders,” Barghi said. “Our understanding of the brain and its functionality is continuously evolving and deepening.” After medical school, Barghi said he’s looking to continue his career with Doctors without Borders, a program that takes doctors to work for free in impoverished, underserved areas. “I don’t like the concept that doctors serve in underserved areas locally,” he said. “People here are served well, but not internationally. I shadowed a doctor in Turkey, where the rooms

were separated by sheets. There was no privacy. All they want is care, and if they get it, then great.” When asked about working without pay for impoverished people, Barghi said the money he’ll make afterward is such that the income sac-
rificed in years of service become insignificant. Barghi’s parents are of Turkish and Iranian decent, but he was born at UAB hospital, which he said is “ironic,” as he’s looking to begin his career at that very hospital.
Building new worlds on stage By NEAL WAGNER City Editor In several years, visitors to Disney’s plethora of theme parks may see the handiwork of a Pelham High School senior who has been transporting audiences to far-off places for the past five years. Chances are, everyone who has attended a PHS theater production during the past few years has seen the work of Matthew Tkacik, who has been designing sets, working the lighting and even acting at the school since his freshman year. Tkacik got his theater production start several years ago when he began going to his sister’s rehearsals and helping out with the lighting. As time progressed, Tkacik became more and more involved in captivating theater audiences and creating other worlds on the
stage. “I do a lot of model concepts, which is just building a 3D model of what the set is going to look like,” Tkacik said, noting he uses anything he can find to construct a miniature model of the set to ensure everything will be able to fit on the stage before the production begins. Tkacik credits his sister, his mother and his theatre teacher, Jamie Stephenson, with helping him sharpen his theatre production skills over time. Stephenson routinely presents Tkacik and his fellow theatre students with unexpected scenarios to teach them the importance of problem solving, he said. “Mrs. Stephenson is a great teacher. She really teaches us the importance of problem solving, which is huge, because something will go wrong in every show no matter

what,” Tkacik said. “I think I am pretty good for college.” Tkacik is planning to attend Troy University in the fall to major in scenic design for theater and movies. From there, he hopes to eventually work for a company founded by one of his role models. “I am going to try to work for Disney one day.
They have been talking about opening up a new theme park,” Tkacik said. “Scene design is big in all of Disney’s parks. “Walt Disney really inspires me, because he had a dream that anything can come true,” Tkacik said. “He was raised poor, but as soon as he made it big, he pretty much had the whole world.”
Hope’s future Mr. President By AMY JONES Associate Editor PELHAM — At Hope Christian School, Josh Blackwell fills a variety of leadership roles. He’s senior class president, Beta Club copresident, Honor Society president, executive vice president of the Key Club, chairman of the prom committee, and senior yearbook photo editor — and that’s just during his senior year. But in the end, all those roles might just be preparing him for a much higher office, one that’s shaped like an oval and located on Pennsylvania Avenue. Blackwell, who plans to attend BirminghamSouthern College this fall and enter a program where he will study philosophy, political science and economics, said he’s definitely considering a political career. However, he’s also considering law school, a graduate degree in business or maybe even seminary. “It’s all about where God leads me in my life,” he said. “Basically, my goal is to help people. I’m not sure where I’ll be
going, but wherever my future is, I know my purpose in life is to glorify God.” Blackwell said he became interested in politics after watching the Bush and Obama administrations and focusing on things he agreed with and things he would have done differently. He said his grandfather, a small businessman, talked about unfair taxes through his last days. “Through politics, I could help people by encouraging free enterprise,” Blackwell said. Blackwell said his strong political beliefs stem from God’s word and his strong Christian upbringing. “My parents provided me with strong Christian standards. They showed me the way to go,” he said. Blackwell said that he believes he’s a leader because of those Christian standards. “I believe that leadership is something that can be natural in a person, but it can also be gained. One has to know how to follow in order to know how to lead,” he said.
Senior helps Helena Police stop crime By KATIE HURST Lifestyles Editor Like many children, School of Technology senior Robbie Grant grew up dreaming about one day becoming a police officer. However, his dreams of crime fighting have taken him further than his childhood as he has already begun to chart his course in law enforcement. The first step was joining the Helena Police Explorers, a group for students ages 14-21 to learn more about law enforcement and training, Grant said.
“I’ve known forever this is what I wanted to do,” he said. “Once I got involved in the Helena Police Explorers, I knew I wanted to make it a career.” Grant has been a Helena Police Explorer for five years and has participated in hands-on police training, gone on numerous ride-alongs with on-duty officers and been involved in community service projects. Grant is currently the explorer post captain and has competed with his team in several skills competitions including traffic stops, traffic
directing and burglary response. At the School of Technology, Grant has been in the public safety class for three years, where he said he’s enjoyed learning more about the field of law enforcement. Through the class, he competed in the state skills USA competition, where he won first place. He went on to win second place in the National Skills USA competition. When he’s not in class, Grant works at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office as a part-time police dispatcher and through an
internship program. He said through this role, he’s enjoyed learning more about crime scene investigation and the chain of custody. After graduation, Grant plans to attend Jeff State and eventually transfer to UAB where he will major in criminal justice. His long-term goal is return to Shelby County to work in law enforcement. “Shelby County is where I’ve grown up,” he said. “My dad was in the military here and this is where we’ve always lived. I feel like my roots are sunk in here.”
