Carmen Shea Brown, Writer Carmen Shea Brown is a freelance writer and copy editor originally from Ozark, Ala. Nancy Wilstach, Writer Nancy lives in Montevallo with her husband, Bill Plott; her 7-year-old grandson, Atticus Plott; and her rescue terrier, Barney. A question I ask people frequently is, “What is something interesting people might not know about you?” I never get tired of hearing the responses. This question is so effective in prompting people to share something about themselves that goes beyond surface-layer topics and reveals anything from special talents to past experiences that are a part of a person’s identity. That’s the whole point of the question: to learn something new that sets a person apart from the crowd.

The last time I answered this question about myself, I wrote: “I am ambidextrous.” Just a fancy word that means I use both my left and right hands for daily tasks. I write with my left hand, but I figured out with a broken arm in the fourth grade that I’m capable of writing with my right hand. Although I play sports sparingly, I favor my right side. I throw a baseball, swing a bat or golf club, and shoot a basketball with my right arm. I bowled with my right arm for many years until I had to switch to my left arm in a college bowling class to allow an incision on my right shoulder to heal. I apply makeup with both hands. The list goes on, but you get the idea.

You’re about to get answers to this question without even having to ask it. Did you know there’s a couple in Shelby County whose mountaintop home boasts 270-degree views of Alabaster and Columbiana? I didn’t know until I talked to owners Buzz and Janet Palmer about their round-shaped home – an interesting topic of conversation in itself.

Did you know radio personality Tony Kurre once staged a billboard “camp-out” in Birmingham? Or that Melanie Poole, marketing and communications director for The American Village, can make a Steampunk-themed necklace using stones, chains and watch faces salvaged from various pieces over time? Or that Alabaster’s Dwayne Thompson not only has a barbecue sauce brand, but is also an ordained minister and non-profit founder? Or that Shelby Robinson, 2018 Miss Thompson High School, wants to open a physical therapy clinic after college? I didn’t know, either.

Too Much or Just Right?

Being a thrifty shopper is not only smart, but a necessity in today’s economy. We’ve heard “cheaper is not always better,” in terms of quality, but doesn’t it make sense to buy 30 rolls of toilet paper to save $3.14? After all, it will be used … eventually. Do you have a place to store those 30 rolls of toilet paper? Clutter happens when there’s too much. When storage space is an issue, you might need to reevaluate your thought process when buying in bulk. uConsider expiration dates. Will you use up the product before it goes out-of-date? If you end up throwing it away, was the price difference worth it? uStorage space. Is there ample room to store the excess of paper towels, cereal and cleaning supplies?

Is this practical for your lifestyle? uThink of the investment. While the cost per slice, roll, or bottle may be good, does your budget allow you to spend money on items that will take you a year to use? uBrands differ. Before buying two large “almost too heavy to lift” mouthwashes, do you like it? What happens when you decide it isn’t as good as you thought it would be? Still a good deal or a waste of money?

It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of bulk items in regards to space available. When space is an issue, the solution may be to purchase the eight-pack of toilet paper versus the industrial bundle. Size matters. It’s that simple.

ALABASTER FOURTH FRIDAYS Field behind Alabaster City Hall The Angel Warriors Foundation is collaborating with the city of Alabaster to organize a series of events called Fourth Fridays for summer 2018. The events will take place on the fourth Friday of each month from April to August. FESTIVAL OF TULIPS The American Village The American Village Festival of Tulips features more than 100,000 flowers.

Through mid-April (depending on bloom time), the Festival of Tulips will once again provide an outing for clubs, groups and families. The field of tulips, with replicas of some of America’s most historic places as a backdrop, creates a photo opportunity, so guests are encouraged to bring a camera.

As the only you-pick tulip field in the region, visitors can take home armfuls of blooms.

Chelsea High School’s “Out of the Blue” competitive show choir returned from the Heart of America competition at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville with national recognition on Feb. 24. “Out of the Blue” was named a first runner-up in the preliminary open division and overall fourth runner-up. Student Patricia Noel was also named the overall best female soloist. The first runner-up title earned “Out of the Blue” a spot in the final round of the competition.

MARKING A HISTORIC MILESTONE The first integrated class at Vincent High School 50 years ago was recognized at a Black History Month assembly on Feb. 27, and a member of that class urged current students to strive for unity and love. Principal Michele Edwards presented the annual Spirit of Vincent Middle High School Award to the school’s class of 1968, the first integrated class, on its 50th anniversary. JROTC Cadets Toni and Tion Wright led the audience, which included all the school’s students, in the Pledge of Allegiance, and SGA President Broxton Sanders welcomed those in attendance.

ALABASTER’S NEW SCHOOL

Feb. 24 was a momentous day for the Alabaster community as members of the Alabaster City School Board cut the ribbon at the entrance to the new Thompson High School. Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers offered brief remarks at the dedicatory event. The ceremony was attended by state, county and city officials. “This new facility is a promise made and a promise kept,” Vickers said. “It’s part of our ongoing commitment to excellence. Our children are worth every cent we spent on this project.” Thompson’s new address, 1921 Thompson Road, was selected to commemorate the school’s founding in 1921.

READY TO READ A group of Pelham police officers spent part of the day on Feb. 28 and March 2 reading to students at Pelham Oaks and Pelham Ridge elementary schools as a part of Read Across America Day. Each day during the week, students at each school participated in different activities leading up to Read Across America Day, March 2, which is also the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.

RARE BIRD SIGHTING

Two Pelham Park Middle School students placed in the Shelby County Cook-off on Feb. 15 at the University of Montevallo.

Student Avery Fuller won first place in the dairy/dessert category with a homemade strawberry shortcake dish, and student Laci Howard placed second in the chicken category with a Hawaiian chicken dish. At the Shelby County Cook-off, students were judged on taste, nutritive value, visual presentation and an evaluation of their recipe.

Alabaster resident and bird enthusiast Charlie Stephenson has been receiving visits from a rare American Northern Cardinal with a pigment mutation. This yellow bird first appeared in her back yard in late January, and has been spotted there almost every day since. When Stephenson first spotted the bird, she knew it was different from other cardinals because of its yellow feathers. Stephenson said this is the first known sighting of a bird like this in Shelby County. After she contacted Auburn University biologist Geoffrey Hill, she learned that spotting a cardinal with this type of pigment mutation is an extremely rare occurrence.

Yellow American Northern Cardinals are typically only seen once a year in the United States, and one has not been documented for the past five years.

Art chose Melanie Poole when she was just 6 years old.

The relationship that began with a portrait of Melanie’s mother that the little girl drew for Mother’s Day has morphed through commercial art to her current avocation, the creation of Steampunk jewelry and hats.

That portrait of Mary Ellen Poole was exhibited in the Decatur Parisian’s display window, “and people recognized her just from the picture,” Melanie says.

Naturally, when Melanie was congratulated on the likeness by Decaturans, many added the encouraging: “You will be an artist when you grow up.”

Melanie took the encouragement to heart, and her family made a shopping trip to the art supply store a regular part of her birthday celebration.

“I was very shy when I was growing up,” Melanie says, so the thought of college—all those strangers, both students and professors—was intimidating. She was still awed by the prospect when Austin High School held a college fair for Melanie’s class.

“Billy Cannon was recruiter for the University of Montevallo,” she recalls, and Cannon made an immediate connection with the quiet girl with an outsized art talent.

“He got (then-chairman of the UM Art Department) Frank McCoy on the line to talk to me,” she recalls. McCoy persuaded her that she would feel welcome at UM. A bonus was that her status as class salutatorian qualified her for a scholarship.

“Montevallo let me be a big fish in a little bitty pond,” Melanie says. She also got an excellent piece of advice from the Class of 1941’s Bettina Pearson Higdon Burns: “She told me: ‘Go to everything you are invited to.’ And I did!”

At UM Melanie majored in commercial art—her logic cannot be disputed: even artists have to eat and keep a roof over their heads.

Today, from Melanie’s “day job” as marketing and communications director for The American Village to her Steampunk art is a lot like the time travel so dear to the geeky hearts of sci-fi fans.

That is pretty appropriate because Melanie comes home each day from a faux Colonial village to a tastefully designed and decorated thoroughly modern home where Melanie’s work room upstairs gives one the sensation of having stepped into yet another time.

Hat blanks parade above the window. On the floor are five-gallon buckets filled with turkey feathers and antlers.

Tools not normally associated with art await Melanie’s hands: a dremel (to drill holes in stones), a soldering iron, an embossing tool, a glue gun.

Shelves hold plastic bags of various types of stones, such as pale blue kyanite from Brazil, smokey quartz and labradorite. The latter might make you think of a watchful cat in a dim room, eyes softly glowing with huge pupils.

Two years after his father left them, James and his mother moved to Tuscaloosa, where later, as a 17-yearold senior at Tuscaloosa High School, he got his start in broadcasting when radio station owner Bert Bank hired him to work the weekend shift at WTBC-AM 1230.

“We survived and we did OK,” he says. He found his true father in heaven at an early age, he says. “I learned the God of the universe loves me. I accepted that message at 12.”

A post on Greystone Golf & Country Club’s Facebook page says all you need to know about the Regions Tradition golf tournament: “You don’t want to miss the par-tee.” For the third consecutive year, Greystone will host Alabama’s annual PGA TOUR Champions tournament that draws thousands of spectators each year.

“In our third year, we feel like we’ve learned a lot of little pieces that will make (the tournament) really good,” Greystone Director of Golf Steve Smith says. “I think it’s going to be pretty special.”

Presented by title sponsor Regions Financial Corporation, the 2018 Regions Tradition will commence May 16 on the Founders Course with the NCR Celebrity Pro-Am at 6:50 a.m. and will continue with first-round championship play on May 17, second-round championship play on May 18, thirdround championship play on May 19 and the final round on May 20.

As of mid-March, 2016 and 2017 Regions Tradition champion Bernhard Langer, John Daly, Miguel Angel Jiménez and David Toms had formally committed to the tournament, and more were expected to commit in the following weeks, according to Bruno Event Team Senior Vice President of Operations George Shaw.

A new attraction at this year’s tournament will be the Watering Hole at the 10th hole. The Watering Hole includes the Cocina Superior Cocina Club, Tito’s Handmade Vodka Tito’s Terrace, Michelob Ultra Ultra Club and William Hill Estate Wine Lounge.

“It’s just such a great place to watch the tournament and have all that going on,” Smith says. “It’s going to be really cool. We’re really looking forward to that.”

Highlights on the week’s schedule include the Lexus Hole-in-One Shootout on May 17 at 5 p.m., Shipt Yoga on the Green on May 18 at 5:30 p.m., Chuck the Hitman Trick Shot Show on May 19 immediately following play and the Preakness Party on May 19 at 5 p.m.

Smith, who has served as Greystone’s Director of Golf since 2001, has received positive feedback from numerous golfers about the course. “So many come up to me as they’re leaving and just tell me how fantastic the golf course was and how much they were really looking forward to coming back the next year. That’s the part that makes it so special. Those guys play the greatest courses all over.”

Another facet of the tournament is philanthropy. The Regions Tradition benefits more than 80 local charities, including Children’s of Alabama, the primary beneficiary. Nearly 1,000 volunteers help ensure the tournament runs smoothly. In addition, Birdies for Charity, a fundraising program that offers local organizations and schools the opportunity to raise money for their causes. Funds come from one-time donations and pledges based on the number of birdies made by PGA TOUR Champions players at the tournament. Since 2012, Birdies for Charity has raised more than $2.9 million.

Although she’s relatively new to a career related to cooking and school nutrition, Ashley Pigford’s work as Hilltop Montessori’s Community Kitchen Manager has been innovative and well-received. Ashley, 35, grew up in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and graduated from Mississippi College with a business degree. She has lived in Birmingham for the last eight years and she and her husband, Josh, have three daughters. She loves trying new recipes, reading and cross-stitching.

What experiences, goals or skills led you to your current position as Hilltop Montessori’s Community Kitchen Manager?

I think growing up on a farm and always having a garden gave me a solid understanding of where my food came from.

I always loved when we could point out the different foods on our dinner plate and connect them to different family experiences in the garden or fresh milk from the dairy farm. I love working with children and getting them excited about new foods. Our new Farm to Fork lunch program is focused on fresh, from-scratch, local foods that not only meet the requests from our parents but make our students happy. We serve around 80 kids a day and are always trying new recipes. Some of the big hits are our kale and apple salad, homemade vegetable soups and of course pizza day with our freshly made sauce.

We have the coolest open concept kitchen that is perfect for students to come in and get their hands dirty. In this first year of our kitchen, we are focusing on establishing our hot lunch program. We can’t wait for more opportunities for our classrooms to be involved in the kitchen through cooking classes that can pull in all types of curriculum, from working with fractions to learning the science behind how plants grow and how they nourish our body.

We love our relationship with Mt Laurel and I happen to be one of its residents so I love that we get to share our new facility with our community. In the future I would love to see cooking and garden classes that benefit both our students and our community.

The people of Birmingham have been flocking to Little Donkey’s Homewood location since its opening four years ago, and now, residents of Shelby County don’t have to drive quite so far for their fix of Southern-inspired Mexican food.

Little Donkey’s new location on U.S. 280 brings a much-needed local flair to the area, and manager Joshua Gentry is thrilled to share the restaurant’s unique style with the residents of north Shelby.

With their roots in Jim ‘N Nick’s, Joshua and the other founders of Little Donkey have always been interested in Mexican culture and cuisine, and they find many similarities between Mexican and Southern food. Two of their most popular dishes, the catfish tacos and the fried chicken, certainly bring elements of both cultures to the table.

“Southern and Mexican food share a lot of ingredients and the techniques are pretty similar,” Joshua said. “It’s the palate that is varied. So, we started working on this as a concept, and have let it evolve as we’ve grown.”

With four locations total—two in Birmingham, one in Nashville, and one in Montgomery—Little Donkey is steadily spreading the joy of its freshly-ground masa to more Alabama residents. Alabaster resident Dwayne Thompson is a man of many talents, one of which helped him create a line of barbecue sauces he sells by the bottle.

Thompson, 48, hails from New Orleans, Louisiana.

After college, he worked as a promoter and security specialist in the music business for 12 years. He’s been an alarm designer with ADT security, a published author, and a radio and TV show host. He has a non-profit organization called Youth Against Violence, he is an ordained minister and a community police relations assistant with Birmingham.

When and why did you start experimenting with barbecue sauce recipes?

I started barbecuing years ago for family and friends, and my children have always loved my sauces that I would create around the house. Two years ago I was looking for a second income, and I was out cooking at a local tavern for a friend, and a guy told me, “You should put this sauce in a bottle.” I ignored him, and the next week another guy told me the same thing. So I did some research, prayed, formed a company, gained certification, and two years later, here we are.

When Buzz and Janet Palmer found a 25-acre spread of overgrown property for sale off Shelby County 26 in Alabaster in 2001, they knew it was where they wanted to build their first house as a married couple.

“We felt at home instantly,” Buzz says. “We virtually committed to it on-site.”

The first order of business for the couple was cleaning up the property and preparing a homesite on top of the mountain. A road winding its way up the mountain was the only break in the trees and brush that filled the property. Their next task was deciding what architectural style they wanted for their home. Their initial preference of a log cabin turned into a much more distinctive choice in design.

They chose Deltec Homes’ Classic Deltec – a round-shaped, hurricane-resistant home with a custom floorplan thanks to having no load-bearing walls. Their floorplan includes four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. They chose 10-foot walls.

“Ours is extremely energy efficient,” Buzz says of the home, which was built in and shipped from Asheville, North Carolina, and consists of three self-contained,

connected pods measuring a combined 3,100 square feet, in addition to an 800-square-foot guest house pod located a five-minute walk from the main house. “It really has the treehouse feel without the tree part. It’s extremely livable, and nothing is wasted in space.”

Sunrises, sunsets and even storms are spectacular sights from the Palmers’ vantage point atop the mountain. “We’ve been through lots of tornadoes,” Janet says. “You can see them roll over the hills.”

The couple’s property is sandwiched between a tree farm on one side and Family Connection on the other, meaning they don’t have to worry about development or privacy. Perched atop Stoney Ridge, which the Palmers have lovingly dubbed “Skunk Mountain” after their first dog, the secluded home isn’t visible from the road. But from their deck, Buzz and Janet have a 270-degree view of Alabaster and Columbiana.

Recently they made the difficult decision to place the house on the market in order to move closer to their children out-of-state.

“We need to downsize,” Janet says. “It’s going to be tough to leave.”

Foyer The foyer is located inside the largest pod, which is 1,500 square feet. In the center of the Brazilian cherry wood floor is a compass, a nod to Buzz’s Eagle Scout title. He insists that every new guest at the house has his or her picture taken with “Chief Sachimopilliumsquil,” a statue and wedding gift that was given Buzz’s father’s nickname.

Deck The only place that affords the couple a better view of the land than the house’s many windows is the wraparound deck. Whether they are playing with their grandchildren (each of whom is represented by a stone disk bearing their handprints) or relaxing by themselves, the deck gives them a front-row seat to the surrounding beauty.

Kitchen The kitchen’s layout was molded around a pre-1900s chopping block made from a sycamore tree. Buzz restored it to serve as an island in the half-moonshaped kitchen. The kitchen features stainless steel appliances and copper countertops and a backsplash imprinted with leaf designs. The cabinets were custom-made with tidewater cypress wood. The kitchen table and countertop space offer plenty of seating for guests at mealtimes.

Bedrooms Because of the home’s privacy, none of its windows have curtains or blinds, including the windows in the four bedrooms. Each bedroom features at least one picture window above sliders that can be opened. Buzz and Janet have a blended family of children and grandchildren, sisters, brothers and friends, and they wanted a home with enough space to accommodate everyone at the same time. “We felt like if we built it, they all would come,” Buzz says. “We chose internally what fit us.”

It was 1988, and a 21-year-old Tony Kurre was working as a DJ for 96 QMF in Louisville, Kentucky.

He had just gotten off the phone with his mother, after telling her that he didn’t feel like radio was in his future anymore. He was getting ready to pack his bags, move back home to Cincinnati and finish college, where he would pursue a marketing career.

The next call would change not only his life but set forth a butterfly effect that would change the lives of others as well.

“I hung up the phone, and right after that, the very next phone call, a guy out of St. Louis called.

He was driving through Louisville and had heard me on the radio.

He said, ‘You sound great. I want you to come with me to Birmingham.’”

WZRR Rock 99 made its debut in Birmingham on Christmas Day of 1988, with Kurre as the afternoon DJ. Thirty years later, this father of three has one of the most recognizable radio voices in Birmingham, having recently wrapped up cohosting the “Opening Drive” morning show on Jox 94.5, and as current host of The Web with Dr. Josh Klapow, an adult-themed show that airs on Talk 99.5 on Saturday nights at 7 p.m. Over the last several years, Kurre has used his radio programs to share his experiences as a father raising a child with

special needs and to promote his platform, the Bright House Foundation.

When Kurre and his wife, Nancy, first married 15 years ago, they knew they wanted to adopt, but they wanted to have a biological child first. But after several miscarriages, Kurre said they both felt that the Lord was telling them it was time to adopt. In 2005 they went to Guatemala, where they adopted their first son, Santo, now 13. Two years later they went back to Guatemala and adopted their second son, Xavier, now 10.

“The first time we saw him, we were in shock,” Kurre says.

“He’s blind, epileptic, he has brain damage and he’s bipolar.

Before we adopted him, we had gotten a few pictures, but we had no idea. My wife and I are both optimists, so we said, ‘What are we going to do to find the silver lining in this?’”

Kurre says his wife came up with the idea of an organization to help local children with special needs and their families. They came up with the name Bright House after the name Xavier, which means “bright eyes.”

“We raise about $25,000-$35,000 a year, and it all goes back out to local special needs organizations like the Arc and Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind,” he says. “We helped over 120 families this past holiday season, with everything from medicine

to dental care, to even taking care of mold in someone’s home.”

Now in its eighth year, the Bright House Foundation is going strong, after most recently receiving support from KFC. “I’m so happy I could cry,” he says. “That’s so great, to get the word out on a national level.”

Kurre said his best memory after 30 years of broadcasting is still his “billboard camp-out” in 1990, after Gene Stallings had been hired to coach the Crimson Tide. Kurre, who grew up an avid baseball and basketball fan, had gradually become enamored with Alabama football (“When you move here, they always tell you that you have to pick a side,” he jokes.).

He stayed on a billboard at the corner of Green Springs and West Valley Avenue, vowing that he would stay until Alabama won a game. It ended up taking three weeks, until Bama finally beat Vanderbilt.

“People were coming out to take pics, Tennessee fans were throwing oranges. It was great,” he said. “The LA Times and some other national publications came out to cover it. It was my 15 minutes of fame.”

Looking back, Kurre says it all has been a huge, unexpected blessing. Kurre remembers, as a 14-year-old student at Lakota High School in Westchester, Ohio, how his mother wanted him to take a radio class since the school had its own

“I kept saying, ‘No, I don’t think I’d be good at it,’ but she was finally like, ‘You are going to take it,’ so I said, ‘Yes, ma’am,’” he says, chuckling.

He credits his teacher, Kay Taylor, with helping him learn about broadcasting and radio. Two years later, he found himself volunteering at Classic Rock 96 in Hamilton, Ohio, where he eventually landed a contract. By age 21 he was in Louisville, when he came to a crossroads and he received that life-changing phone call.

“My mother said, ‘When you make it big one day, you’re going to use it as a platform to talk about your faith and how wonderful life is,’” he says.

For Kurre, that is exactly what life has become. Five years ago, he and Nancy welcomed their first biological child, Lila.

Kurre said he is a firm believer in God’s perfect timing, and he’s looking forward to many more years with radio and making a difference in other families’ lives.

“It’s been an amazing journey for us,” he says. “Every day, I wake up and I can’t wait to get up and go to work.”

Center.

During this time, several companies in Columbiana will be on site to accept resumes, interview candidates and hire for immediate openings at their locations.

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY that you’ll carry with you after high school?

Throughout all three years of my pageant experiences I have learned not to focus so much on what other people might think and to just be yourself.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to attend Tennessee State University and study in physical therapy. I eventually want to open my own clinic where there may not be many physical therapy clinics around.

2018 Miss Thompson High School Shelby Robinson is an active member of her school and community. Shelby, 18, is the daughter of attorney Edward and Miranda Robinson of Alabaster. She has two sisters, Kelsey and Averie.

A senior at Thompson High School, Shelby is a Warriorette (dance team) and a member of Mu Alpha Theta, 300 Leadership Team and Peer Helpers. She attends Sixth Avenue Baptist Church where she’s an active member of the Liturgical Dance Ministry, Youth Choir and Sunday School.

What was your reaction to being named 2018 Miss Thompson High School?

Winning Miss THS was very shocking! I did not think I was going to win. This year I focused on having fun and making it about the experience, not about winning.

What’s one thing on your bucket list?

The one thing that is at the top of my bucket list is to travel to Jamaica! Aside from how beautiful it is, I also want to experience its culture and atmosphere.

What’s something interesting people might not know about you?

One thing interesting that people might not know about me is that I haven’t taken an actual dance class since I was about 7 years old. Everything I needed to know to try out for middle school and high school dance team I actually taught myself!

If you could meet a famous person today, who would you choose, and why?

If I could pick any famous person to meet it would be Michelle Obama because she always goes out of her way to connect with people that look up to her, especially young people (girls) and women. I think that is really important. She also knows Beyoncé so it could be like a 2-in-1 type of thing!

It actually wasn’t planned for my sister Kelsey to do the pageant; it just kind of happened (although I really wanted her to do it in the beginning). I’m so glad she decided to do it.
