Investigator Highlights

Investigator Chris Harmon We are excited for Investigator Harmon’s recent promotion to the rank of Sergeant, and we wish him luck in his new assignment! Harmon has been an asset to Compact since his assignment in 2021, and has made a lasting impact in the Chelsea and Oak Mountain schools. He will truly be missed by the Compact team, as well as the students and parents that he assisted over the last few years. Harmon was very dedicated to his assignment at Compact, and put in 100% every day. Congratulations Sergeant Harmon!

Detective Ken Lowery We are also excited for Detective Lowery’s recent assignment to the Detective Bureau at the Helena Police Department! Lowery was also assigned to Compact in 2021, and has built great relationships with the students and schools of Helena. Lowery was very passionate about helping students and their families, both proactively and reactively. Detective Lowery was heavily invested in the tobacco and vaping cessations courses, and was a subject matter expert on vaping and social media safety for teenagers.

Congratulations to both of you! You will be very missed by your Compact family.

Welcome Detective Jason Davis By: Lieutenant Shane Plyler

Detective Jason Davis joined Compact in December 2023 from the Helena Police Department. He is assigned to assist the students at Helena Schools. He began his law enforcement career as a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in 2007. He then joined the Homewood Police Department where he served for 10 years in the patrol unit, tactical response team and as an evidence technician. In 2021 , he joined the Helena Police Department where he has experience as an evidence technician, the UAS Drone Program , Patrol and served as a School Resource Officer at Helena Middle School.

Prior to becoming a police officer, Detective Davis served nine years in the US Navy where he proudly served his country as a Petty Officer 2nd Class (SW) and served overseas as well as Mainland US. Detective Davis brings a wealth of experience to Compact and it shows through his level of professionalism and his dedication to the Helena community.

Welcome Investigator Ash Lightner By: Lieutenant Shane Plyler We are excited to welcome Investigator Ash Lightner, who starts with Compact on January 16th as a representative of the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office. Investigator Lightner is a retired Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and comes to us with more than 30 years of state, local, and Federal law enforcement experience.

Prior to his assignment at ATF, Investigator Lightner worked for the Schley County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol, and has also held instructional positions teaching leadership training to Federal Agents. Investigator Lightner brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and leadership to our team, and we are very eager to see his future accomplishments here.

OPEN HOUSE PARTIES (13A-11-10.1) b) No adult having control of any residence, who has authorized an open house party at the residence and is in attendance at the party, shall allow the open house party to continue if all of the following occur: (1) Alcoholic beverages or controlled substances are illegally possessed or illegally consumed at the residence by a person under the age of 21.

(2) The adult knows that an alcoholic beverage or controlled substance is in the illegal possession of or is being illegally consumed by a person under the age of 21 at the residence.

(3) The adult fails to take reasonable action to prevent illegal possession or illegal consumption of the alcoholic beverage or controlled substance. (c) Any adult who violates this section shall be guilty of a Class B misdemeanor.

PSYCHOACTIVE CANNABINOIDS ·Psychoactive Cannabinoids - Act 2023-169 (effective August 1st, 2023): This Act prohibits psychoactive cannabinoids derived from or found in hemp, including, but not limited to, delta-8tetrahydrocannabinol and delta-10-tetrahydrocannabinol, from being sold, distributed, marketed to, or possessed by an individual who is under 21 years of age. Medical Marijuana not included.

SMOKING AND VAPING ·

·Smoking/Vaping in Vehicle with Child Under 14 - Act 2023-93 (effective August 1st, 2023): This Act creates a secondary traffic violation that would make it unlawful for a person to smoke any tobacco product or to vape in a motor vehicle, whether in motion or at rest, in which a child aged 14 years or under is present in the vehicle.

Compact Resource Spotlight FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPS

Most of us know someone who has been affected by someone’s addiction. It may be a parent, a son or daughter, brother or sister, husband or wife, or perhaps just an old friend we grew up with. More often than not, it is a parent living with the stress of a son or daughter in active addiction or a spouse worrying when their husband or wife will come home late at night. Like many families, they have tried everything they can think of to help their loved one: Drug rehabilitation facilities, doctors, therapists, and faith.

Many of the same families can feel defeated at times when their loved one doesn’t get better. Even though the majority of successful sobriety cases depend on the individual wanting to quit, not the efforts of the family; to family members, it still feels like the burden is on them. They have drawn boundaries only to have them broken time and time again. There is an unknowing of what ‘tough love’ truly is and the accompanying fear of pushing their loved one too far, to the point they could go into a downward spiral. There is the fear of when will the day come that they overdose and die. There is loss of trust, there is hurt and anger at what has become of the person they once knew. In the drug or alcohol ravaged body, the person they love has become hard to recognize. “Is my loved one still in there?” is a question for many.

This is the reality of what many families live with every day. They don’t know who else to go to when everything they have tried doesn’t seem to work. “Who is out there that truly understands what I am going through?” is a common thought. Dave Urech and his wife Laura understand living like this because they still have an adult son using substances. I have known Dave Urech for about five years. I have utilized the Family Support Group that he facilitates as a resource for many families I come in contact with. These are family members that are in crisis and feel as though they are at a dead end as far as what to do about their loved one in active addiction. I spoke to Dave recently and told him Compact wanted to feature the work he and others are doing to help people living with someone in active addiction for our quarterly newsletter.

Dave explained to me that years back he and his wife had made contact with a parent and loved ones support group here in Birmingham through Art and Carie Wimberly due to their son’s addiction.

FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPS cont... By: Investigator Adam Schniper

They met other families dealing with similar experiences, and after trying to find help amongst people who did not understand, they found help amongst people who truly understood what they endured. The group meetings they attended helped them to learn how to create boundaries with their son to not only protect their well-being, but also his. They learned about the science behind substance use disorder. Knowledge that was free of stigma and judgement, free of unhelpful opinions; true helpful knowledge. They learned about resources he and his wife could tap into to assist them in their journey and help in developing an action plan for the here-and-now as well as the future. But most of all, they built relationships with other families who understood.

With the help of Art and Carie Wimberly and the Addiction Prevention Coalition, of which Carie Wimberly is executive director, Dave and Laura started a second Family Support Group to help families and loved-ones learn to navigate the difficulties of loving someone with substance use disorder. Dave told me that their motivation to help others was not having someone to help them when they needed it. I asked Dave to tell me in his words what someone who is interested in attending a group meeting can expect. He stated that the meetings consist of half fellowship with other families and the other half is educational in nature. Much of the fellowship extends beyond the meetings and relationships are forged between other families.

The families that attend understand the difficult emotions involved in living with someone with substance use disorder. The anger, the fear of overdose, suicide, or jail; depression, feeling isolated and/or hiding it from others - the overwhelming feeling of being consumed by the situation. Dave went into detail that there are twenty-nine lessons the group goes through which are on addiction-related topics.

These are lessons that empower and help participants learn to draw boundaries that fit their situation. Resources are also highlighted to not only benefit the family, but also their loved one battling substance use disorder. One part of the educational factor is that Dave invites speakers who are in recovery to talk to the group. Family members need hope that recovery is possible and that they are not alone in dealing with this heartbreaking challenge. As he finished describing the functions of the Family Support Group, Dave told me, “Even though our son is still out there, my wife and I and other families are much better.”

It’s kind of a funny story....

NO HAIR-DON’T CARE! During the fall of 2023, Helena Middle School SRO Jason Davis, who recently joined the Compact team, agreed to shave his head and face in front of the student body if the school raised $1000 for the Wings of Hope Pediatric Foundation. To his surprise, the student body exceeded that expectation by raising $1,114 for this incredible foundation. So on December 1st, 2023, Detective Davis had to honor that promise. FUN FACT What’s inside a Kit Kat? Broken Kit Kats that are damaged during production. They get ground up and go between the wafers inside, along with cocoa and sugar. That’s one way to not let anything go to waste!
