Ramadan and Lent

Ramadan Reflections, by Sumayah Yaseen who grew up in Darnall and is studying at the University of Sheffield

Ramadan is the blessed, holy month, and is celebrated every year by Muslims, globally. It is a month where fasting for 30 days, abstaining from food and drink until sunset, is observed. What does Ramadan mean in 2026?

Spirituality and the Self - above all else, Ramadan is a spiritual journey between an individual and God. It is a means to achieve discipline, patience, and gratitude. The month arrives to strengthen a Muslim’s relationship with God through increased acts of worship, and as a reminder to refrain from bad habits and behaviour.

Charity and Generosity - charity is a huge component of Islam, and is emphasised in the month of Ramadan. Just as fasting is observed to remind us of those struggling for food, shelter, clothing around the world — distributing charity is a way to provide assistance for those in need. Many charities and mosques in Darnall provide this support, such as the Cube Foundation centre.

Community and Culture - Darnall prides itself on being a diverse community, with a love for cultural foods. Similarly, Ramadan fosters community gatherings; whether it’s during Suhur (dawn) where families wake and eat their fill for the day, or if it’s at Iftar (sunset) when it is time to break fast with neighbours and friends — many mosques also provide facilities and events to get together and share food. Ramadan is less about food, and more about focusing on goodness and generosity. It is an experience that is different to each individual. This Ramadan, I have been focusing on my daily prayers and my fasts, as well as helping others as best I can. When it comes to neighbours and friends, don’t be shy to ask questions about how the holy month is going for them. Be involved, and join in with the feasts and good deeds!

Lent and Easter, by Rev Gina Kalsi - St Albans House Christian community

This year, two major religions will be marking a time of fasting and preparation at around the same time. As Ramadan is marked by fasting for the month, so Christians will mark Lent, a similar time of fast and reflective preparation for Easter (though the fast may not be of food, but from an activity or something that is a distraction).

Lent is 40 days long (not including Sundays) and reflects the time Jesus spent fasting in the desert and where he fought temptation. It starts on Shrove Tuesday, where there is a feast before the time of fasting, and where foods that might be fasted from (fat, sugar, eggs) are all consumed - why pancakes are eaten. The following day is Ash Wednesday – called because it is the day when some churches have special services of reflection and refocussing on God, and at this, ash is used to mark a cross on the forehead. If you see someone with a dark smudge on their forehead a few weeks before Easter, they have probably been to an Ash Wednesday service at the beginning of Lent. During Lent, in Sheffield, Christians walk and pray every street in the city during the month of March.

At the end of Lent, Easter is celebrated. It is the most important feast for Christians (alongside Christmas) as it remembers the death and rising to life, of Jesus. His death on a cross is remembered on the Friday – Good Friday – when many churches will join together to walk into the city centre and meet together outside the Town Hall to pray.

Then on the Sunday - Easter Sunday – Christians will gather together and celebrate Jesus rising again. Some churches will have an early morning gathering, to watch the sun rise and to begin the day, singing and praying and may even have a bonfire or fireworks. Traditionally a time for people to be baptised – when they make a commitment to their Christian faith. Many churches will share Holy Communion, or Eucharist or Mass – the sharing of bread and wine and remembering the time that Jesus shared it with his friends. A time of celebration – which is why chocolate (in the shape of eggs to signify new life) and hot cross buns are eaten.

Whether you are marking Ramadan, Lent or neither, may this Spring be a blessed time for you.

Tinsley Life

An update from Tinsley Forum

A Big Thank You to Our Community

Thank you to everyone who has joined an activity, volunteered their time, shared ideas, or simply popped in for a chat.

It’s been fantastic to see so many people getting involved and helping to make Tinsley an even stronger, healthier and more connected community.

Walking Group: our walking group continues to grow and welcomes new faces every week. It’s a relaxed and friendly way to get moving, enjoy some fresh air and meet new people. And if the weather isn’t on our side we head indoors for a warm drink and a good catch-up. No one misses out.

Over-60s Activities: our sessions for older residents have been really well attended. Each week brings a great mix of gentle activity, conversation and companionship. It’s been lovely to see new friendships forming and familiar faces returning regularly.

Family & Children’s Activities: we’re pleased to share that activities at the Tinsley Community Allotment will be starting up again soon. The allotment is a great space for families and neighbours to come together, get outdoors, learn new skills and enjoy time in nature. We’re looking forward to welcoming people back for more hands-on sessions, seasonal activities and opportunities to get involved. Keep an eye out for upcoming dates, everyone is welcome to join in.

⚽ Youth Activities & Sports: local young people have been keeping busy with a range of activities, including: sports sessions with local partners, youth trips out and fun activities led by youth workers. We’re also developing a new junior girls’ youth club shaped directly by what young people have told us they would like to see. We’re exploring even more sports opportunities for next year too, depending on interest and funding.

Community Litter Picks: a big thank you to everyone who joined our recent litter pick, it made a real difference. We’re now running bi-monthly litter picks, each one focusing on a different part of Tinsley. Everyone is welcome to get involved.

Community connections growing: as more people take part in Move More activities, we’re seeing greater use of other services in the building, including: the Community Access Point – Advice Service, the Library, the Computer Suite, employment support, courses at the One Stop Shop. It’s been great to see the building busier, more vibrant and well used by the whole community.

We’re also proud to work alongside fantastic local partners who help make this possible, including Darnall Well Being, DESA/Tinsley United, youth services, health teams, sports providers and local community groups.

What’s Coming Up: *bi-monthly community litter picks; *continued walking group and wellbeing sessions, *more family activities, *new programmes and *events shaped by local people. Want to get involved, volunteer or find out more? Just pop in and have a chat, we’d love to see you.

We will be restarting sessions at Tinsley Community Allotment this month (March). We are open every Friday in term time from 1pm to 3pm. Everybody is welcome to drop in and help us with gardening activities such as sowing seeds, weeding and watering.

Later in the year when there are crops to harvest, our volunteers can take home some of the fruit and vegetables we have grown together. If you prefer to just sit with a cuppa, you are welcome to come and enjoy our green space. You can find the gate to the allotment in the car park behind Tinsley Forum, on Bawtry Road.

We will also be running four weekly sessions for carers later in the year. We will have gardening and craft activities outside on the allotment. If you are caring for somebody and could do with some time away for a few hours, send us an email to find out more details: tinsleyallotment@gmail.com

East LAC - Darnall Ward

A big thank you to the East LAC Ward Pot which has funded printing of this newsletter

East Local Area Committee Awards 2026

The East LAC Awards are all about recognising kindness, teamwork and community spirit. The special event held at Sheffield Town Hall celebrated the amazing people and groups who help make our local communities great places to live.

We said a BIG thank you to local heroes who do all they can to help others, bring people together and make East Sheffield shine.

We had many nominations for groups and individuals to receive a special 'thank you' at our East Local Area Committee Awards evening and selecting two from the nominations received for each ward was very hard, as all our nominees deserved an award.

The Darnall Awards for 2026 went to:

Kinder Kalsi – for going above and beyond for the Darnall community, thriving for education, accountability and a safe and clean neighbourhood. He gives up his time for the Darnall ward and is very passionate for change in Darnall. He really is a very valued advocate for Darnall.

Yuma Elite - for their hard-working efforts and keeping children and local people safe. The work they do changes lives by getting kids off the street and showing them that there are other ways of life. The award was presented to Zeshaan Khan on behalf of Yuma Elite.

A big thank you to the East LAC from Darnall TARA for funding a theatre visit. Fifty local people had a fabulous night at the Lyceum Theatre, when they went to see Aladdin. Thank you to East Local Area Committee and the Sheffield Lyceum Theatre for their amazing support to make this happen.

Darnall TARA held a public meeting to discuss fly-tipping, litter and area issues. The meeting was well attended by Cllr Mary Lea, Teresa Bond from the East Local Area Committee, Council officers as well as partners from relevant services to help with addressing concerns raised. If you have any concerns about area issues, fly-tipping, litter, anti social behavour and crime, you can report them directly.

Spring Reflections from local resident Dr Anna Armentano

Recently, I’ve started joining the Darnall Well Being Walking Group on Monday mornings, and it has been a wonderful way to connect with both nature and community as spring approaches. Walking outdoors not only encourages gentle physical activity, which releases mood-lifting endorphins, but also provides a mindful space to notice the seasonal changes – the lengthening days, warmer sunlight, and budding greenery – that naturally lift our spirits. The rhythm of walking and the shared social experience also foster emotional regulation, helping me feel calmer, more balanced, and connected to others.

Spending time outside has a profound impact on mood and overall wellbeing. Natural light helps regulate circadian rhythms and boosts serotonin, supporting emotional stability. The fresh air, birdsong, and gentle warmth engage our senses and ground us in the present moment, reducing stress, soothing anxiety and promoting calm reflection. Even brief moments outdoors pausing to feel the sun, listening to the sounds of spring, or noticing small seasonal changes can reset the mind, cultivate gratitude, and improve emotional resilience.

Walking in nature has become a mindful ritual for me, nurturing both psychological wellbeing and a sense of connection to self, others and the environment

If you would like to try joining our walking group, please come along to Darnall Primary Care Centre on Mondays at 10.45am and the friendly group will welcome you.

World TB Day!

Every year on 24 March, World TB Day reminds us to look after our health and to help protect our community.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an illness that can affect anyone. It usually causes a cough that lasts more than three weeks. Other signs include fever, heavy night sweats, tiredness and loss of appetite. If you notice these symptoms, it is important to get checked by visiting your GP.

Treatment is free and works well when started quickly. TB spreads through the air, but it can be found early with simple free screening tests, so if you are invited for a test make sure you attend.

We are lucky to have a kind and supportive team of Community TB Nurses here in Sheffield. They can answer questions and guide you through treatment if needed. To contact the team call 0114 307 8390 or email sht-tr.tbnurses@nhs.net

Women of South Yorkshire is a grass-roots community organisation, led and delivered by volunteers. We’re dedicated to creating safe and welcoming spaces where women and young girls - especially from Global Majority backgrounds - can gather to develop, share experiences, support each other and grow in confidence.

Our mission is simple: to bring women together. It could be workshops or childcare or physical and social activities; we want to improve wellbeing and strengthen the bonds within and between our diverse communities. Whether through mental health and wellbeing sessions, walks, coffee mornings or clubs for children, (so mums can get a much deserved break!), it allows women to let go of life’s burdens.

Women of South Yorkshire is more than a group - it’s a sisterhood, rooted in non-judgemental support and shared strength. If this sounds like you (or what you need!) stay up to date on our latest activities:

Help and Support

The Community Connector has teamed up with Shelter to provide a series of articles about housing. In this edition we look at the specialist housing advice drop-in sessions offered by Shelter.

Are you struggling with bad housing or homelessness or problems with damp, disrepair, eviction, antisocial behaviour, harassment, Council Housing Register and Priority, homelessness or overcrowding?

A Shelter specliast housing advise drop-in session could help you. The focus of these sessions is to provide specialist housing advice to families regarding their rights, options, and ways of resolving their housing needs.

We encourage people to take the initial steps independently; however, if they have taken these steps but have been unsuccessful, we can assess their situation and provide further advice or casework. We also offer advice and training to professionals so they can assist their clients with initial housing queries.

You can meet with a Shelter Housing Rights Worker at these Family Hubs during school term time at:

Darnall Family Hub: Mondays between 9am and noon

First Start Family Hub (Firth Park): Thursdays between 9am and noon

We are also available at the following venues:

Fir Vale Community Hub: Tuesday between 1pm and 4pm

Oasis Community Hub Space: Wednesday between 9am to noon

If you are unable to attend a session locally, support is also available at:

Shelter Community Hub, 33-37 Hereford Street, S1 4PP Monday to Friday 9am-noon and 1pm-5pm You can also make a referral using our referral form. To request a form, please 0344 515 1297 or email Sheffield_Hub@shelter.org.uk

We can provide you with advice and detailed guidance on your housing rights and available options.

Litter-Pick Stations

Local councillor Qais Al-Ahdal has arranged for litter pickers to be available in local mosques for people to borrow and use. To date seven mosques have signed up and the following are hosting the litter pickers: *Al-Huda Academy, *Elahi Jame Masjid & Cultural Centre, *·Al-Shafeey Centre, *High Hazel Mosque and *Nooral Hadi Masjid. More mosques will continue to be added. The equipment is available to use upon request during prayer times when mosques open five times a day. This slightly varies by a few minutes between mosques. Cllr Qais is planning to expand the times, with signs outside mosques for anyone to use them freely. They can then just fill the clear bin bags dotted around the area.

Sheffield Young Explorers (SYE) has had a busy start to 2026, delivering our February Healthy Holidays (HAF) provision, including our much-loved Discovery Camps. These camps offered children fun, engaging experiences to learn through play, creativity and exploration, with highlights including a hands-on animal experience that was a real hit with families.

Alongside our holiday provision, SYE continues to run a range of regular activitiesfor children and young people, including our monthly STEM Clubs, Leadership Programme and Sip & Craft sessions, all designed to build confidence, skills and meaningful connections.

Our popular Coffee Morning will also continue under a new banner, Flourishing Communities, alongside our creative Sip & Paint sessions, providing safe, welcoming spaces for adults to connect and unwind.

We’re especially excited that the first cohort of our Leadership Programme will be leading and delivering community events in June – so please watch this space!

FACES (Family Adult Community Education Service) is launching an accredited Mental Health and Wellbeing course in April to help you build confidence, resilience, and practical skills for everyday life. At the Darnall Unity Hub, our learners have already been getting involved in digital conversation classes, improving their spoken English while gaining essential digital skills. Many learners have also taken the opportunity to study for the driving theory test, supported by our digital learning offer.

If any of these opportunities sound exciting to you, we’d love to hear from you! Email us: faces@sheffield.gov.uk or call 0114 229 6144

Get in touch and we’ll add you to our waiting list for courses. Every learner at FACES receives personalised support from our friendly Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) team, who will help you explore your goals and plan your next steps. Recently, one of our classes welcomed University of Sheffield Ambassadors to talk about pathways into higher education. As one tutor shared: “It was eyeopening and inspiring, and we really appreciated the Ambassadors’ perspective as students and how they landed where they are today.” Whether you’re looking to learn new skills, boost your confidence, or open doors to future opportunities, there’s a place for you at FACES.

Charity’s puppies need you!

Could you support the first steps in a dog’s journey towards becoming a life-changing assistance dog?

The Sheffield-based Support Dogs charity is looking for volunteer puppy socialisers to provide a loving home and help the organisation to prepare its puppies over their first 14 months of life before they begin full-time training. Someone who lives within reasonable distance of Support Dogs’ centre, with an enclosed garden and who is at home

for the majority of the day is preferable. The charity covers all associated costs including food, equipment, bedding and medical bills and you receive one-to-one support throughout the process from its team of trainers. Support Dogs is a national charity, which trains dogs to help autistic children, and adults with epilepsy or a physical ability, empowering them to live safer, more independent lives.

Update from your local Neighbourhood Police Team (NPT)

We have been working with our partners on issues within the community, including anti-social behaviour, drug use in the community and speeding.

We have continued our routine patrols which have resulted in several stop searches, vehicles being recovered and multiple arrests.

Throughout the last few months, we have also been doing pop in police stations at a local mosque, and this is set to continue.

Please follow our Facebook page for updates - Sheffield South East NPT and our group email address is SheffieldSouthEastNPT@southyorkshire.police.uk should you wish to get in touch with us.

We recognise not everyone wants to deal directly with police. If this is you, please be aware you can report information completely anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers.

South Yorkshire Police are committed to ensuring that the make up of our officers and staff is reflective of our communities. As such, we have been working towards ensuring that our entry routes are accessible and appealing to all demographics.

Our new Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP) blends classroom learning at our in-house training centre with learning ‘on the job’. New recruits spend the majority of their time working alongside experienced police officers out on South Yorkshire’s streets.

The PCEP is a two-year programme that counts as probation, and the training is based on the national policing curriculum focusing on preparing recruits for a hands-on policing role.

Successful applicants spend the first few weeks of their training learning the law and specialist policing knowledge, ready to join their teams out in our communities. While this is an opportunity to learn and develop policing knowledge and practice, there is no academic qualification. We welcome applicants both with and without a degree onto this programme.
