Welcome Liz McIntyre CEO & Festival Director

(Hello)

This year, the Festival is shining brightly with Northern stars such as Vicky McClure, Guy Martin, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (DOUBLETHINK p.35). When Doc/Fest was born in 1994, the world was changing forever, ushering in a remarkable era of new power and influence: inventor Tim Berners-Lee made the world wide web freely available. Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa. The Cold War ended, and the Channel Tunnel connected Britain with Europe. 25 years on, a new wave of filmmakers is chronicling new power dynamics and the consequences of the past. The World Premieres of Alisa Kovalenko’s Home Games (p.52) and Maceo Frost’s Too Beautiful: Our Right to Fight (p.43), led by inspiring female protagonists, brilliantly challenge social norms through sport. The compelling World Premieres of Inka Achte’s Boys Who Like Girls (p.60) and Joost van den Burg’s Bruce Lee & the Outlaw (p.39) show the vital role individuals play to bravely disrupt the status quo.

At Abbeydale Picture House, Tranny Fag (p.58) provokes us to consider gender in a non-binary way. And we abandon defining fellow human beings as ‘the other’ and find points of connection in Face to Face (Alternate Realities, p.87), experiencing life through the eyes of mother Michelle, whose life was changed forever by a gun accident. 2018 marks a period of reflection about the power we each hold or lack, resulting in new ways of seeing. We’re thrilled to open the festival with Yorkshire director Sean McAllister’s world premiere A Northern Soul (p.26), the story of underdog Steve – a factory worker by day and hip hop performer by night – battling through adversity to follow his dreams.

Welcome

Ey-up!

A big Sheffield welcome to the 25th Edition of Doc/Fest, with six days of festival celebrations across the city. Come and experience the world’s best stories in Films and Live Events, Virtual Reality and Interactive Storytelling and Talks.

I can’t wait to see you at City Hall for Opening Night.

As Lord Mayor of this wonderful city I get the privilege of being involved in an array of events, but there really isn’t any event that makes me more excited and proud than Doc/Fest. For one week, we see the city of Sheffield come together to showcase all things documentary and welcome guests from across the globe. Opening the Festival this year for its 25th Edition is a great honour. I believe this year’s programme is Doc/Fest’s boldest one so far and is successful in encapsulating the hopes and problems we face in the world today whilst challenging perceptions through the art of storytelling. Two films that stand out for me this year are Søren Steen Jespersen & Nasib Farah’s Lost Warrior (p.47), the story of a separated family, focusing on the importance of community cohesion in face of isolation and radicalisation.

4

The other being Alexandria Bombach’s On Her Shoulders (p.47) which tells the story of a courageous young woman who becomes a spokesperson for her community on a mission to speak out about the injustices she and her people face. For any Sir David Attenborough fans I’d recommend the incredible Alternate Realities project Hold the World (p.87), a one on one encounter with a digital version of David Attenborough that guides you through astonishing natural history specimens. And finally, I’m really looking forward to the talk by the very talented entrepreneur Jamal Edwards (p.104). In addition to talking about his influential career, he will also be discussing his new documentary focusing on breaking the stigmas surrounding mental health. I hope you enjoy the Festival and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.

Welcome

There are many things that make me proud of Sheffield – it is the first City of Sanctuary in the UK and the city that welcomed me and my family when we arrived from Somalia, it’s radical political history which birthed the likes of Mary Anne Rawson and the UK’s first women’s suffrage society and finally, the breadth of creativity that pours from every corner of it.

Nature’s Nickelodeons

The Dark Room

Experience the nature documentary, but as you’ve never seen or heard it before. Inspired by an abandoned idea of Walt Disney’s to build natural history cinemas in zoos, experimental composers, musicians and a sci-fi writer join filmmaker and Doctor of GeoHumanities Amy Cutler to re-invent the heroes, villains, sounds and spaces of nature broadcasts. We’ll travel through submerged volcanoes, bio-luminescence, flocking birds and swarming insects, accompanied by new performances, from live drone laments to the conducting of “feral singing” by the audience.

Comedian John Robertson’s smash-hit live-action adventure game is coming to Sheffield for a one-off Doc/Fest special at Trafalgar Warehouse. Look out for bespoke documentary and Sheffield references, as you awake to find yourself in a Dark Room. Stuck inside with your fellow audience members you must work together to escape. You, the audience, must choose-yourown adventure and select an option. Will you: A) Find the light switch? B) Go North? C) Cry for help?

A vibrant night of queer cinema and contemporary Brazilian electro-funk. São Paulo pop star Linn da Quebrada is a Black trans woman whose explicit anthems give voice to marginalised communities from the favelas, while also confronting the Brazilian music scene’s macho, heteronormative prejudices. Kiko Goifman and Claudia Priscilla’s candid profile of this radical performer will be followed by a special live performance from Linn and friends at Abbeydale Picture House.

The Incredible Playable Show Mon 11 June / 20:00 / Trafalgar Warehouse / £10/ £8

An award-winning live video game show where you, the audience, take to the stage. Become human buttons, zap each other with barcode scanners, and play Pac-Man using inflatable toys. Or sit back, and watch your friends literally become cogs in a hilarious machine. Interactive ringmaster Alistair Aitcheson brings the madcap hilarity of his theatrical gaming mashup to Sheffield for a special performance at Doc/Fest. Referencing iconic Sheffield landmarks, themes from the Alternate Realities programme like memory and data and lampooning the documentary world in its own unique idiom. The Sheffield chapter of Incredible Playable can only be experienced as part of Doc/Fest’s Alternate Realities programme in Trafalgar Warehouse. Part of the Alternate Realities (p.83)

Stories of the present day that you need to see. Meet three exceptional makers who’s work is featured in Better Known Truths, Alternate Realities’ 360º documentary showcase. Featuring enlightening presentations and a group discussion with the artists about the importance of portrayal and representation to their work.

We are often presented with stories told about the developing world, rather than stories told with the developing world. Because of this, stories are often skewed and singular in how they represent some of the most critical issues of our time - and the communities in focus. Zahra Rasool, the head of Al Jazeera’s Contrast VR, presents an impassioned keynote about the path to authentic storytelling through diversity and collaboration.

What do we want the future to look like? Immersive media, artificial intelligence and other innovations promises to impact every aspect of our societies. The stakes are too high for limited inclusion in the design of the future of media. Ruthie Doyle shares the highlights of a year-long research project on this topic as a commission of Ford Foundation’s JustFilms programme.

Alternate Realities Curator Dan Tucker shares his closing remarks on the Summit and invites the attendees to meet the Alternate Realities artists for drinks.

Meet the Artists of Doc/Fest 2018

Round Tables – Concepts and Ideas

Fri 8 June / 16:15/ Netflix Crucible Studio

Sat 9 June / 11:00 / Crucible Adelphi

The Summit begins with an overview of the world of live cinema, its presence in the Doc/Fest 2018 programme and the potentials of ‘liveness’ for factual storytelling with Lisa Brook (Director, Live Cinema UK), Dr Sarah Atkinson (King’s College London) and Helen Kennedy (University of Brighton).

Artists including Jarvis Cocker and British Sea Power have premiered live scores to archive films at Doc/Fest. With more archive releases with big name artists being released each year including Asunder (Esther Johnson / score by Field Music and Warm Digits), we ask those making, including Jason Singh who will perform as part of Nature’s Nickelodeons (p.28) at the Festival and those exhibiting, what is the enduring appeal of the genre, how has it become a staple of live cinema internationally and how can filmmakers and producers get involved?

Artists from the 2018 Doc/Fest programme join journalist and live cinema producer Colm McAuliffe to take an exclusive look behind the scenes of their world premiere events including Reeps One on his new live show We Speak Music Live (p.27), Richard DeDomenici on his guerilla recreation of Threads: Redux (p.28), Amy Cutler on Nature’s Nickelodeons (p.28) and Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard on their Doc/Fest commissioned immersive video installation DOUBLETHINK (p.33).

What makes a great live cinema project? How and why should filmmakers, producers and artists be using ‘liveness’ in their work? Whether you have a fully formed idea or just want to find out more, explore it with our creatives and academics.

From one-night-only live score presentations to experiential launch events and virtual reality projects on tour with national releases, films can hugely benefit from the live experience as part of their launch strategy. In the age of VOD, why should you consider a live element in your film’s launch strategy and how can this work for factual releases, as well as fiction? Hear from industry leading live cinema event-makers, exhibitors and marketers, and discover how cinemas are changing to embrace the concept of liveness.

Mobile, virtual reality and interactive tech innovations have left cinema-going largely unchanged – phones remain (generally) on silent and collective cinematic VR experiences are not yet commonplace with a few exceptions. Meet the exhibitors and artists, including Richard Ramchurn whose brain-controlled film The MOMENT (p.77) is playing at the Festival, harnessing tech for in-cinema experiences, including user-controlled and multi-narrative films, and mobile interactivity.

How do you get your idea off the ground, and where can you exhibit? Funders, venues and tour bookers are here to give their advice on making a financially viable project with big audience appeal without jeopardising your creativity.

Artists Christopher Thomas Allen, Katharine Vega and Toby Harris have forged new forms of events, collaborated across the arts, and embraced cultures and technologies - old and new. Join them for an exploration of audio-visual performance, projection design and a whole lot of provocation about what the ‘live’ in Live Cinema can be.

As screens become more hi-res, colour grading has become an essential tool to work with raw camera images. How can you change the look of a shot, what effect does it have and are there cost-effective solutions? Hear from a colourist who specialises in bringing black and white archive to life and a colour grader at a leading post house. We’ll discuss apps and online tools as well as high-end kit.

How do documentary filmmakers choose the stories they tell? What does it mean to put your own story on screen? And how do you craft those stories to resonate with global audiences? Two Sundance-winning directors speak with critic and journalist Simran Hans about their filmmaking approach, and share insights into each other’s work.

This interactive and probing session will use the experience of a psychologist to gain insight into the art of directing actuality, the portrayal of character and examine whether we can ever get too close to the subject in documentaries. Using clips from their films and some revealing tests, two filmmakers will put themselves ‘on the psychologist’s couch’ to explore how they engage with their subjects and whether and how they ever cross the line.

The choice of formats, cameras, lenses and workflows is ever increasing. Is the choice of lens ‘the new film stock’? How small can cameras get? What does the practice of stills photography add to the moving image? With the focus on a film’s story or issue, are we paying enough attention to what it actually looks like? Hear filmmakers and DoPs discuss what they use and their reasons for using it.

As advances in technology mean better sound in cinemas and from televisions and evermore focus on a films’ soundtrack, what can sound designers do for a film? We explore this question with a director whose debut feature creates a striking portrait of Beirut through sound and image and a sound designer working across documentary and fiction.

As the form evolves, documentary and animation are coming together in surprising ways. Some filmmakers are using the artistic scope of drawn or computer-generated images to create new visual languages. For others, it may be a way round the costs of dramatic reconstruction or lack of real footage. Animator Anna Humphries will lead us through a survey of the genre’s range and we will explore with other panelists the potential for filmmakers to use animation techniques in their work.

Sun 10 June / 12:00 – 13:00 Cutlers’ Hall, Hadfield Hall

What’s a sales agent? What’s a distributor? How do I get my film sold and seen by audiences worldwide? If you’re new to documentary filmmaking and want to know more about the incredibly important stages of sales and distribution this session is for you. Doc/Fest’s Marketplace & Talent team will bring you up to speed with the current, need-to-know aspects of working with industry partners in a ‘no assumed knowledge’ and ‘no questions are silly’ spirit.

In this session, producer Lindsey Dryden will discuss in detail the creative distribution strategy for Unrest which was pitched in the MeetMarket in 2016, followed by a World Premiere at Sundance and UK premiere at Doc/Fest in 2017 where it won the Illuminate Award. The film has since screened at numerous international festivals, been released theatrically in the USA and UK, sold to PBS and Netflix and performed well in the home entertainment market via DVD and iTunes.

How do we make these stories entertaining and authentic? And is class the final elephant in the room? As well as factual, this session will touch on other genres including comedy and drama. Festival Pass Holders only.

Broadcasters are often criticised for not doing enough to bring environmental issues to primetime television and with broadest appeal. With the success of Blue Planet II we debate what role television should play in raising awareness of environmental issues. Are blue chip series the only way to attract an audience or is there space to support lower budget, more nimble content? Festival Pass Holders only.

Documentary and journalism have a powerful tradition of exposing abuses of power. We examine how the pursuit of truth and justice is affected by the issues of dark PR and data mining, including a discussion about the Cambridge Analytica Facebook scandal. In the era of big data and the new social ‘arms race’, what legislation is needed to protect the individual, what are the best new ways for investigative stories, and when do the regulations go too far?
