Program Notes: The idea for this piece came about one night while I was driving home from Denver. As I looked at the sky, it was difficult to see any of the stars due to the light pollution of the city. When I got home, I looked again where the lights aren’t as bad in the suburbs of Littleton. It was early spring, and I knew the constellation, Orion, would still be visible. I found him, but still couldn’t see many of the other constellations that were supposed to be out, such as Sirius, the dog, at Orion’s left, or Taurus, the bull, on his right, or Gemini, the twins, above him. Even away from the city, there were still too many lights on. In the mountains, the stars are much easier to see.

But even though they’re only an hour from my house, I still have responsibilities and it’s not always practical for me to just drive off when I need a break. While I use the stars and the constellations as my metaphors, I find that often in life we are pushed to always be working, always making profit, much like the city lights that never turn off. The message is simple, hold tight to your identity and the things that bring you joy, even as others try to drown you out. At the end of this song, Orion does fade away, but whether it’s just over the horizon to return in the winter, or he fades from view due to the ever growing artificial lights, is up for discrecion.
