Score Notes: The beginning of this piece should feel very rubato, the tempo pushing and pulling until the triplets in the bass come in.
Program Notes: This piece was written for a composition exercise/project after we learned set theory in composition studio. The goal was to write a two-minute piece using two different three-note sets to create a six-note super-set. The two sets I used were 9t2(bass voice), and 145(treble voice), to create 9t1245 or {013478}. I started out keeping the two sets separated, and gradually pulled notes from the "bass set" into the treble voice and visa-versa. This gave me the ability to end on a major chord after having a more minor/dissonant sound for the beginning. Once the piece was written, I listened to it a few times just trying to envision something that I could use as a title. The open tempo in the beginning reminded me of the push and pull of the wind, and the minor sound throughout the piece sounded like something dark. However, the major ending made it also sound majestic and untamed. The top of a pine tree is something you don’t get to see unless you’re up high, and the top of even the sturdiest tree will sway with the wind. That was what came to mind after listening again, something dark, something that sways, something rarely touched.
