Be sure to take note of mm 60 in the Alto and Bass line, in this repeat of the chorus, that line used the minor 6th instead of the major 6th.

Program Notes: The melody of this piece was highly influenced by children’s folk songs, mostly because at the time of writing I was taking Elementary Methods for my education degree. I used the pentatonic scale and cadences on the open fifths give it that folk-like quality. The lyrics of this piece are beautiful, but I didn’t really want to write a slow chorale, so I went with something a little more peppy and upbeat for the middle section while using that enchanting quality of modal mixture at the beginning and end of the piece. As a Coloradan, I have our mountainous woods to be beautiful yes, but also strong and sturdy and full of life, even in the winter.
