On Frosted Mornings For Solo Trombone Commissioned by Carli Castillon

Program Notes: When I moved out of my parent’s house after I had finished college and landed my first job teaching Elementary music, I found that one of the things I appreciated the most were quiet and peaceful mornings. Before I had lived with three siblings and my parents, or three other roommates in college. This home was the first one that really felt like mine. And in the mornings I enjoy sitting by my big window and drinking my coffee in peace. While writing this piece I was often sitting by the same window, simply enjoying the quiet of it all. But when I had finished the piece, I realized I hadn’t really been thinking of anything in particular while writing it. Then I thought of the cold Fall mornings that had started my days, just looking at the fallen leaves and the frost that coated them. The way the sunrise would cause the frost to sparkle before it melted.

I thought of those mornings and how the piece starts off quiet and serene, before sparkling with a fanfare and the feeling of joy and accomplishment by simply sitting in my house, and enjoying the sunlight until it sets again.
