National Ram Sale Field Day

At White Dog Lane SheepMaster® Stud 6th November Onsite at Elleker, WA & AuctionsPlus

Breeder of the Month Brian Prater of White Dog Lane SheepMaster® Stud and Neil visited Jo & Tony Slattery’s p r o p e r t y a t Tw i n P e a k s SheepMaster® Stud, not far from Albany, WA. The Slatterys and their son Michael run 4 properties over 4000 hectares in the Gnowellen/Wellstead/Kojaneerup region. They have cereal and lamb businesses. As the last 3 years have been very dry, the breeding flock has been reduced 3,500 to 2,000 ewes. They recently had excellent rains and are now rebuilding their breeding flock from natural increase. Their original commercial ewe flock was Dorper and Australian Whites. Twin Peaks Stud purchased their first SheepMaster® sires in 2018 and are now mating all their ewes to SheepMaster® genetics. They started breeding their own flock rams and have developed their Foundation Stud breeding flock of about 200 animals. Twin Peaks Stud expects to start selling commercial rams from the start of 2021. Jo, Tony and Michael are extremely pleased with their SheepMaster® animals as they are showing exceptional early growth and weight at 4 to 5 months of age. They believe SheepMaster® sheep are ideal for their country and rainfall.

The sale was a great success with the 90 rams selling to a high of $4000 and averaging $2100. The response to our display was very positive. The SheepMaster® rams stood out for size, growth rate and clean skins and attracted a good deal of interest. The national breeders are planning to have 30 rams in the 2021 Cobar Sale. Luke Scales, the Landmark representative, should be congratulated for running a very successful sale. This is SheepMaster®s first public display in the eastern states and the first big step for our future in the shedding sheep industry.

Online Livestock Sales in the Time of Coronavirus SheepMaster® is putting a lot of resources, time and effort with our National Stud breeders developing photographic skills and strategies for marketing our stud and specially selected commercial rams online. The virus has precipitated the take-up of IT for online sales and breeders and farmers everywhere are recognising the advantages of this. Traditionally people on the land have been isolated with restricted communication and the tyranny of distance. They are now embracing a whole new access to improved choices in genetics, buying online at the click of a button. It is now a level playing field. Online management support is developing, utilising this technology. However, this puts a lot of pressure back on the breeders to provide top quality photos that display the virtues of the animal in an ethical manner. We are setting up sales catalogues for each breeder as their photography skills reach the standard. This is taking longer for some than others!
