African drumming with Mzee Derron By: Deja Tenese Vaughn S.L: Can we interview you Mzee Derron?

Mzee.D: sure.

D.V: What is your program about?

Mzee.D: To expose our community to west African culture.

D.V: How long have you been doing this?

Mzee.D: I've been playing percussion since 1974 and west African percussion since 2008.

D.V: What keeps you teaching children?

Mzee.D: ive had an intrest in education of children for a while now.

S.L: Why did you start this program?

Mzee.D: I fell in love with the drum as a little boy and I grew up loving it. So I started this program so it could be an outlet to young boys where they would play drums instead of violence and gangs.

D.V: Do you only do this in the summer or is a year round thing?

Mzee.D: I work throughout the year with two programs, one is dancing, and the second one is just drumming.

S.L: Why did you choose the west African vibe specifically?

Mzee.D: My first introduction to west African drumming was when I traveled to Africa. I’ve actually traveed to about 40 countries. My professional work is with corporate America so I traveled a lot and I still do but no as much. i’ve actually been to brazil and there I drummed with a samba school and learned the local language which was porteguese, And that allowed me to reconnect with the drum and see it as a form of communication. I’ve been to New York for a drumming circle and that’s how I ended up in Miami for a drumming circle and youth empowerment.

Q. Why don’t you like kids to eat hot fries?

A. It has red dye and it burns up your heart, liver, stomach, brain, and poisons your blood.

Q. Why did you choose to have a girls only camp?

A. Boys need a very physical camp.

Q. How did you find all the special consultants to talk to the girls?

A. They are URGENT, Inc. community partners during the year who sign a contract to work with the program for summer.

Dorsey Park Camper Interview

By Terai Caballero Overtown, Miami - A fieldtrip to Historic Dorsey Park included a fun day of painting murals commemorating the Negro baseball league players, recreation and hopping around in a bounce house.

Trinity Carter is an 8 years old who added to the murals by drawing "flowers and I used the colors purple and red to make them. The technique I used was to start at the bottom and go to the top with the paint brush with the paint. My favorite part was painting with my friends, the bounce house, and the dancing. I liked the experience. I have never been to Dorsey Park before at all.�

College Bound Sessions with Breakthrough Miami By: Deja Tenese Vaughn In this class the older girls got to experience what a college class was like. There was a guest speaker named Mr. Smith who was a biomedical engineer. There are many opportunities to educate yourself but not everyone will be able to voice their opinion and if so, you need a lot of patience.

Because there is so much to be done and so little time so silence is needed and encouraged. On the other hand inappropriate manners are discouraged. The key to succeed in these courses is to participate, be an active listener, and do your work because without a steady base you can’t make a mountain.

Broward Science Museum Experience Ms. Jojo By: Deja Tenese Vaughn

IT Women Sessions Review An interview with Ms. Willow By: Deja Tenese Vaughn This is a girl’s only program like our camp but their reason is different. They invite nothing but females because males take up more than 80 percent of high titles in the world. It’s about computer programming which involves coding. To succeed mathematics is key in the binary series.

This means that only zeros and ones are used. This is a program of Cisco so to even be considered for an internship in this multimillion dollar business certain courses are required. To help kids understand this they have an animated series starring Peter and Penny Packet, although sometimes Pixie Packet makes an appearance.

System networking is one of the most important things that you will need in this industry and it all starts with knowing your IP Address.

An 11 year old Ziyu Lee’s favorite exhibit was the Goosebumps Exhibit. This was because she discoveredwhat her fears truly were. I asked her, “Why do you think that they made this a science museum?” She replied with “Science isn’t really an easy subject in school so not many people like it, but when they make it fun for the kids everyone enjoys it a whole lot more.” One of the things that really caught everyone’s eye was at the corner of the weather exhibit.

It was the electric ball because it seemed to be the coolest thing in the exhibit to the kids, though I prefer the simulator “the Wrong Stuff” in the Powerful You exhibit. Ziyu thinks that anyone the age of 6 and above will love this museum mostly because at that age they are able to remember and enjoy to the fullest extent what they learned in that one building!

Perez Art Museum Presentation By: Wayneisha K.M. Samuel On Wednesday July 2 2014 Adia Latoya class got a very special presentation from Patty and from Asair of PAMM. They showed a variety of artwork based on the museum’s summer theme of lines. They continued with several small art projects. These projects included of ojo de dios (eye of god), counter drawings, and sculpted miniature sculptures together.
