Letter from the

Marafiki wapendwa (Dear friends in Swahili),

Transformation. This is the word that rings through every chapter of the S.H.E. College Fund’s story in 2023. As any biologist, psychologist or spiritual teacher knows, in a true transformation, the outer manifestation changes but the essence of the entity does not change. It is revealed, to shine forth ever more brightly. Thus, the values at the heart of our mission, team, and community have not changed. They glow from the eyes and heart of every S.H.E. student and staff member.

And they are rippling out farther and wider as we form new relationships in Kenya and the USA. From welcoming six new students and the beautiful ceremony embracing them into the S.H.E. community; to the community building and reproductive rights workshops and a series of in-person and online life skills seminars; to our beautiful graduates; to the broadening impact made by S.H.E. students and graduates in the world through internships and professional jobs; to an astounding fundraiser blessed by some of the most gifted women poets, musicians, and writers in the USA, to the birth of the Kim Rosen Scholarship Fund; to more primary funders stepping up to give students life-saving opportunities than ever before , the S.H.E. College Fund has been transformed, is transforming, and is proliferating transformation wherever our students, funders and teams touch the world.

The two most transformative events of 2023 have been the welcoming of Sarah Degnan Kambou as the incoming Executive Director, and a mystery call that I received in October. Through a comprehensive job application process created by the USA Board of Directors and the wondrous Kat Weiss-Malik, along with a big dose of last minute magic (Sarah discovered the opportunity a day before the application deadline!), Sarah was welcomed to team in June of 2023. Over the following 6 months she definitely taught us (especially yours truly!) as much as we taught her about the S.H.E. College Fund. Sarah comes to us with 40 years of experience in humanitarian work, much of it as a resident of several countries in Africa where she and her Ivorian husband brought up their children.

Whether by coincidence or grace, we were blessed to receive grants from the Cactus Tree Foundation , the Circle of Sisterhood and the Cowles Family Foundation concurrent with Sarah's arrival, igniting possibilities for expansion that we never could have manifested without her wise and heartful presence at the helm of our ever intrepid voyage.

In the Maasai language, the word osotua means, literally, umbilical. It is also used to refer to the invisible cord that connects us all in peaceful and generous relationship. I think of the gatherings often held in Maasai communities, where hundreds of neighbors from miles around come together, singing and dancing, to raise funds for hospital bills when a child has been ill, for college fees if the family has no money, for food if the children are starving. These are people who have very little, but give not only what financial support they can, but also their wholehearted voices, their dancing, their inspirational prayers. The village makes miracles happen through radical generosity. The S.H.E. College Fund aspires to follow in the footsteps of the Maasai. We thank you for being part of our “village”. Together with the passion and hard work of the S.H.E. students, we are making miracles happen.

Welcoming

OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Sarah Degnan Kambou

Sarah has four decades of leadership experience directing gender equity and social justice initiatives in Africa for the International Center for Research on Women, Care International and Boston University School of Public Health.

Among her accolades, in 2012, President Obama appointed Sarah to his Global Development Council, and former President Clinton appointed her as an Advisor to the Clinton Global Initiative.

Our Mission The S.H.E. College Fund provides full scholarships for comprehensive post-secondary education to courageous young Kenyan women who have denounced FGM/C and childhood marriage and are committed to becoming educated, empowered and employed changemakers in their community. We believe that education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and oppression, and through our efforts in collaboration with the students we serve, we are creating a future where every young woman has the chance to reach her full potential and contribute to society.

Unlike most scholarship programs, the S.H.E. College Fund allocates scholarships based on passion and vision, regardless of a student’s grades in high school. This is because the young women who make the greatest impact are often those who come from extremely rural backgrounds where support to excel in secondary school is not available to girls. Once accepted in the supportive community of S.H.E. students, their college grades soar.

This approach recognizes the unique challenges faced by girls in Narok County and aims to unlock their untapped potential, making a lasting impact on their lives and on their communities.

COMMUNITY An environment of support and concern for each individual member of the S.H.E. Fund community of students, staff, board members, and funders is at the core of the organization’s success.

HEART Decisions, actions, and interactions in the organization are informed by the heart as well as the mind.

It has been an honor to contribute to the S.H.E College Fund. The fund is well-managed with wisdom and heart, and it is wonderful to witness the empowerment of each young woman who is supported through the S.H.E Fund. This nonprofit is making a difference, one girl, one woman, one village at a time!

The Osotua Pathway At the S.H.E. College Fund, our theory of change is anchored in the promise and potential of a college education. Knowledge, skills and practical experience combine to create pathways to empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. Our vision is that over the course of her multi-year scholarship, every S.H.E. student will become an empowered woman who will serve as a role model and change maker in her community.

This is our Osotua* Pathway—a holistic approach that goes beyond simply providing college scholarships. We ensure our students are well-equipped with the necessary life skills, mentorship, and career counseling to be able to secure employment. She is never alone.

The Osotua Pathway features a broad support network, internships, mental health services, and job readiness training. By nurturing relationships, fostering a sense of sisterhood, and building a strong Osotua community, we are empowering our scholars to succeed and lead.

Kim Rosen Scholarship Fund Our global community of donors is supporting young Maasai women, who have said no to FGM and child marriage, to pursue higher education, find good jobs, earn a living, and uplift their families and society. This fund honors the many gifts of Kim Rosen, and is specially designed for donors who want their gift to go directly to supporting scholarships for S.H.E. students.

Joy Milanoi, The First Kim Rosen Scholar, says, “As I reflect on my journey, I’ve always wanted to achieve higher to inspire my siblings and the girls in my village. Now my sisters do not have to undergo FGM/C and are in school. Because of me!”

From Tribe & Fire 2023 was a heartfelt online celebration supporting the courageous young women of the S.H.E. College Fund. Our country's most beloved women artists generously offered their poetry, prose, and music. As long-time supporters of the Fund, their artistic contributions have been transformative and life-saving, continuously inspiring and uplifting our community.

Cactus Tree Foundation “What would it take to give a college education to every girl in Narok County who has the courage to say no to FGM/C and is passionate about uplifting her community?”

In October of 2023, Kim Rosen got a phone call that radically transformed the S.H.E.. College Fund. It was the birth of a partnership that will allow us to increase the number of incoming S.H.E. scholars annually starting in 2024. Thank you, Cactus Tree Foundation!

It’s exciting when you find an organization that is not only stellar in its impact, but where you feel so personally connected: that you’re holding hands with the folks who are making that impact happen and also with the young women who are the direct beneficiaries of that organization. Kim Rosen is the Founder & Executive Director of the S.H.E. College Fund. She is also the author of Saved by a Poem: The Transformative Power of Words (Hay House, 2009). A culminating moment of her life mission came in 2006 when she recited a poem to a group of Maasai girls at the Tasaru Rescue Center. In that moment of cross-cultural, transgenerational communion, a deep bond was formed that eventually inspired her to create the S.H.E. Fund to serve the girls who had won her heart. Kim spends time in Kenya each year to develop personal relationships with students, network with other organizations, and oversee the work of the Fund.

Sarah Degnan Kambou, Incoming Executive Director of the S.H.E. College Fund, is a global development expert with four decades of leadership experience directing gender equity and social justice initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia for the International Center for Research on Women, Care International and Boston University School of Public Health where she earned her MPH and PhD in international health policy. In 2012, President Obama appointed Sarah to the President’s Global Development Council. Also in 2012, former President Clinton tapped her to serve as an advisor to the Clinton Global Initiative.

Sarah’s contributions to the public good have been acknowledged by various awards platforms, such as, Top 100 Global Influencers in Gender Equality, 2019 and 2018 | Center for Nonprofit Advancement EXCEL Award, 2018, for exceptional nonprofit leadership | UNA Perdita Huston Human Rights Award, 2013.

Kat Weiss-Malik is the Program and Operations Manager for the S.H.E. College Fund. She loves making a difference one person at a time. She joined the S.H.E community because she believes in heart work, and she’s inspired by every single S.H.E. student she encounters. She has an MBA from HEC Paris and has worked for nonprofits like Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute. In addition to supporting the S.H.E. Fund, she’s just completed her graduate degree in professional counseling. She lives in Austin, Texas with her loving husband, his two amazing kiddos, and their two crazy cats.

Jacinta Silantoi Meteur is Executive Director of the S.H.E. Fund Kenya. She earned her BS in Business, and is soon to earn an MBA in Business Administration. The eldest of 10 children, Jacinta was the first female in her village to achieve an education beyond primary school, and the first person to go to college.

Even as a child, Jacinta was passionate about education. As a young girl she fled to the Tasaru Rescue Center in order to avoid FGM. Her passion to attend college compelled her to reach out to Kim Rosen for help in 2010, and their collaboration in her college education was the seed that became the S.H.E Fund.

Jacinta is responsible for the myriad tasks that go into supporting S.H.E. students day to day in Kenya - finding them colleges, teaching them about budgeting and communication, taking them to school, bookkeeping of expenses, responding to student requests, and maintaining frequent contact with all students and team members.

Emily Ketter is the organization’s Supervisor and holds a degree in Project Management. She has been the manager of the Tasaru Rescue Center for 15 years.

She has known many students in the S.H.E. Fund since their arrival at the center; she knows their stories and struggles. She has the unique ability to both play and work with the students, and they respect her deeply.

Phyllis Nailois Kamwaro is the Administrative Assistant at S.H.E Fund Kenya. She met Kim Rosen when she was living at the Tasaru Rescue Center, having escaped FGM and early marriage. With the support of the S.H.E. Fund and the “Silver Spoon Scholarship” program, Nailois earned her B.S. in Information Technology from Jomo Kenyatta University, Nakuru. She is married and blessed with five kids: two girls and three boys. Her oldest son is in third grade, and her twins started pre-primary in 2023. She enjoys writing poems, swimming, traveling, and meeting new people.

Jackline Sanoe works in Student Support for the S.H.E. Fund Kenya. As a S.H.E. Fund student, Jackie completed her degree in Social Work at Maasai Mara University in 2020. After graduation, she volunteered with the Red Course and the Narok County Government. She is now working full-time with the county, and she also helps the S.H.E. Fund Kenya staff with accompanying the girls to school when they start college.

Linah Naisho works in Student Support for the S.H.E. Fund Kenya. Linah fled FGM in 2007 and arrived at the Tasaru Safe House in Narok. At the time, she had never been to school and spoke only Maa, the language of the Maasai. She became a S.H.E. student in 2018. In 2022, Linah graduated with a Degree in Commerce from Maasai Mara University. She has opened her own tailoring boutique, and is a successful businesswoman.

She accompanies the new S.H.E. students when they start college.
