“Autumn is the time of year when Mother Nature says, ‘Look how easy, how healthy, and how beautiful letting go can be.’” – Toni

Hello Everyone! I hope September has treated you well. If not, then let go and get ready for what October holds for you!

I want to start by saying it’s not too late to get your tickets to OktoberFeast!! This event is the perfect networking and food event. Meet and socialize with great people while tasting a variety of Sheboygan County restaurants (many are new)! We will be at the American Club this year on October 12th from 5:30-8:00 pm. When you attend this event, you are supporting Coastal Young Professionals in our area, as this is the Coastal Young Professionals’ only fundraiser event of the year. So, come out and have a good time for a good cause, all while filling your bellies!

Shortly after, we will have our annual Brews & Brainstorming event, which will help us lay the blueprint of YP planning for next year. So, if you are a Coastal Young Professional or new in the area and are looking to get involved, come join! Help us decide on what our events will look like for next year. This way, it’ll be things that interest you and fill your cup. We want to help make this community better and ourselves in the process. This event will be at 3 Sheeps Brewing Company on October 25th from 5:00-7:00 pm.

Hope to see you all soon! In the meantime, enjoy all the beautiful colors that fall brings!

- Director Of Membership & Workforce Development

As I continue to learn and grow in my new role as Director of Membership and Workforce Development, there is so much that has impressed and impacted me as a Chamber staff member. For example, I’m constantly blown away by the generosity and commitment of our members. Whether diving into professional development opportunities, sacrificing time and energy by serving on committees, or generously sponsoring Chamber causes, the intentionality and passion that surrounds this Chamber community are truly noteworthy and contagious. The work that we accomplish throughout Sheboygan County is a direct result of your efforts and sacrifice. And, based on what I’ve seen, we can continue to expect great things to come from this Chamber community. Thank you for everything you do—we couldn’t do even a fraction of what we do without you!

I’ve also been learning a great deal about the nearly endless opportunities to engage and utilize your Chamber membership, and I wanted to promote one specific program that I believe is unique and valuable: Deep Dive.

What makes our Deep Dive groups so different is that they are an intentional step away from “cast your net” networking and toward relationship building. In my experience, it’s easy to create a network that is a mile wide and only an inch deep (think LinkedIn). We go to an event, shake a hand, meet a new person, and 10 minutes later, we’ve likely forgotten that person’s name and will never talk to them again. Deep Dive groups flip that concept on its head.

If you’re not familiar, Deep Dives are consistent groups of individuals who meet twice a month to create meaningful relationships, share what’s happening in their sphere of influence, learn from one another, and rely on each other for referrals. Deep Dives create a room full of ambassadors and advocates for each other’s brands. Wouldn’t you love to have an additional 10-30 people who intimately know your brand and can promote you within their own networks? When new members join the Chamber, Deep Dive is always the place that I can encourage them to plug into first. The value far outweighs the couple of hours it will cost you each month.

If you’d like to learn more about how to get started in a Deep Dive group, reach out to me at josh@sheboygan.org.

“With life, there is always something going on...” – Anonymous

Hello, my fellow members! September has flown by, and I have a feeling October will do the same.

October will be the host of four ribbon cuttings, one vibe@5, STEAMfest, OktoberFeast, and Creating Inclusive Workplaces. Just to name a few events. Please check out the calendar to register and find more information about these events.

On my radar is the new and improved ATHENA Leadership Awards. I just love this event and the changes that we have made to it. This year, the event will be a dinner held at Pine Hills Country Club, which allows the nominees’ supporters to be there with them as they are acknowledged as someone or an organization that supports and empowers women to flourish. We have added two new awards to be recognized that evening. The two new awards are the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award and the ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award. Information on the new awards can be found on the ATHENA Leadership Award event page.

Along with these wonderful changes, we have an amazing keynote speaker joining us that evening. Gabrielle Dow, Vice President of Marketing & Fan Engagement for the Green Bay Packers will be entertaining us with her journey and what the future may hold for her. Our ATHENA emcee will be none other than Jess Lambrecht, Executive Officer for the Division of Continuing Education & Community Engagement with UW-Green Bay.

Nominations are open for these prestigious awards. Help us honor amazing people who empower, promote, and contribute time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in our community, especially women and girls.

For more information on the ATHENA Leadership Awards, click here. We are looking for two more award sponsors. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a sponsor, please reach out to me. I would love the opportunity to tell you more about them.

Celebrating Manufacturing Month!

I toured my first manufacturing facility when I was four years old thanks to my father when he took me to the ice cream cone factory he managed. I can still smell the sugar cones and see the cup cones coming off the line. Making things can be fascinating. Probably the most challenging job along my career path was when I managed the Industrial Services Department at a consulting engineering firm. We completed projects at a wide variety of manufacturing plants ranging from ammunition to pickles.

During October, The Sheboygan County Chamber celebrates ‘manufacturing month’ and for many reasons. You could say about 22,000 reasons because during 2023, that was the average number employed by manufacturing in our area. The total ‘non-farm’ employment is about 62,000, so manufacturing is about 35%. In truth, that is one of the highest in the nation. Wisconsin ranks number 2 in the nation, with 16% of our workforce involved with manufacturing. Indiana ranks number 1, with 17% involved in manufacturing.

Jobs can be classified as ‘direct,’ ‘indirect,’ or ‘induced’. According to Wikipedia, “A direct job is employment created to fulfill the demand for a product or service. An indirect job is a job that exists to produce the goods and services needed by the workers with direct jobs. Indirect employment includes the things need direct on the job as well as jobs produced because of the worker’s needs (e.g., uniforms). Employment created by the additional personal spending (e.g., eating at a restaurant) by both direct and indirect workers is classified as an induced job.” Sometimes a job multiplier is used to estimate the impact an employer can have.

So, what’s the actual impact? Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) annual input-output tables have calculated that a dollar’s worth of final demand for manufacturers generates $1.48 in other services and production. This is higher than any other sector. The retail and wholesale trade sectors have much lower multipliers, generating 54 cents and 58 cents respectively in other additional inputs for every dollar of economic activity they generate. Another resource provided this, “Each 100 jobs in manufacturing supports 2.91 jobs elsewhere in the economy, compared to the 1.54 jobs in business services and 88 jobs in retail trade.” However you look at the numbers, manufacturing has an impact!

In truth, we celebrate ALL of our employers! However, join us in celebrating our area manufacturers during October. Be sure to check The Buzz for announcements about plant tours during October.
