September 2019 UPCOMING EVENTS A Letter From the President As the ninth month of the year, September marks the beginning of autumn. Traditionally the month of September is considered a month that marks transitions between seasons. In September, the Chamber celebrates Chamber Month, so please attend a few of the events listed throughout this newsletter and enjoy a great way to transition from summer into fall!

I am in disbelief that September is already upon us, but I think I speak for many when I share that I’m thrilled for the kids to return to school, structure and normal bedtimes! This time of year is extremely busy for the Chamber as we are finalizing Annual Golf Outing details, preparing for our Annual Workforce Development Symposium in October, Speed Networking event also in October and Athena Leadership Award in November. There are so many opportunities for you and your staff to get involved, whether it is a professional development opportunity, networking and building relationships or assisting on one of our many committees.

We are also finalizing Strategic Planning through the remainder of the year.

We’ve had a wonderful time meeting with all of our committees; we worked through problem solving as a team and shared new ideas on how we can continue to be the best Chamber serving our membership. Implementation will begin on or before January 2020. A huge thank you to our many volunteers, committee members and Chamber leadership for embarking on this journey with us.

the Director of Workforce Development Even though the summer is coming to an end, our workforce development teams are continuing to prepare and plan for the future. The Business-Education Partnership (BEP) is currently working on its strategic plan for 2020 to continue ensuring that businesses, schools, and the community can gather to help retain current workers, while helping our youth develop into strong leaders. The BEP continues its belief that working together provides more resources and opportunities in the schools and workforce.

As we continue moving forward, we have two great events coming up. The first event being the Workforce Development Symposium at Pine Hills Country Club on October 8.This year’s symposium will be more interactive, allowing attendees to have the opportunity to discuss and work with other professionals. Speakers will include Markus Brauer, Professor of Psychology from UW-Madison, Caleb Frostman, Wisconsin’s Secretary of Workforce Development, Scott Schmidt from Scout-n-About, Melanie Ramos from Living as a Leader, Kelly Lietz, Vice President of Marketing and Brand Strategy for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and Rebecca Deschane, the Talent Initiatives Director also with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

This workforce symposium is designed to fit the needs of all different types of professionals. Ultimately, we all want to retain and attract as many workers as possible, so with the help of these professionals we will learn dynamic strategies. Speakers will help us to see what positive attitudes and culture inclusiveness looks like in the workforce. We will also learn about the state’s talent attraction strategy and how we can utilize the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation’s talented marketing assets to create videos, social media posts and digital and print ads to promote career and lifestyle opportunities. Last, we will hear from local business employees on how they have worked towards reducing the stigma surrounding different generations of workers as Baby Boomers are exiting the workforce and Generation Z is entering.

The Coastal Young Professionals Network (YPNs) are also solidifying their strategic plan for the upcoming year.

Through meaningful conversations, the YPN committee has been discussing their past, current, and future presence in our community and identifying areas of need in our community that they can assist in. They continue to value professional development for young leaders, and are consistently finding ways to reach as many young professionals as possible to pair them with the expert speakers willing to share their success stories. It’s great seeing such young, enthusiastic leaders coming together for the greater good of the community.

The second event coming your way is the YPN’s annual fundraiser, OktoberFeast, held at John Michael Kohler Art Center on October 10 from 5:30-8. We welcome all community members to come and join in on the fun as there will be many local restaurants featuring samples of their signature cuisine.

We are thankful for the restaurants’ generosity because without them, we could not make this event happen. We will also be featuring a live band and will have raffles thanks to other community businesses that have donated or sponsored the event. Watch for more information coming out soon!

News from THE DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Unfortunately, the end of summer is near, but hopefully we’ll have a beautiful fall season to look forward to. Schools will be opening with the excitement of children, kids and young adults going to and from school, going to football practice, track, band, and learning new and innovative ideas from our wonderful instructors throughout the county. The NFL will be kicking off in short order, without Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts starting at quarterback. What a difference a year makes from Comeback Player of the Year to early retirement. And, as time marches on, so does your Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce.

Scott Kuehn Back in 2017, Governor Scott Walker proclaimed the month of September “Chamber of Commerce Month.” We, as well as 266 other Chambers across the great state of Wisconsin will celebrate our services and members. Martha has laid out several events that are occuring during the month.

Here’s an additional glimpse of what to expect during the month of September from your Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce:

•“Chamber Month Breakfast Eat Around” during the first week of 09/01 – 09/07. Enjoy a great breakfast at any number of fine Chamber restaurants throughout the county.

• “Chamber Month Out to Lunch Eat Around” during the week of 09/08 – 09/14. Enjoy a great lunch at any number of fine Chamber restaurants throughout the county.

• “What’s for Dinner Chamber Eat Eround” during the week of 09/22 – 09/28. Continue to enjoy dinner at any number of fine Chamber restaurants throughout the county.

As you can see, we have a rip-roaring month of September ready to roll for our members, and this doesn’t include Deep Dives, Roundtables and other programs.

I believe celebrating the month of September is summed up quite well by the President of the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce and WCCE Advisory Board Chair: “We are going to be asking all chambers in Wisconsin, big and small, to reach out to local media, community groups, government and the public to talk about what they do every day to make their part of Wisconsin more prosperous for business, great places to visit and even better places to live.” We are reaching out as well to make sure all members in Sheboygan County are leveraging their Chamber to the fullest extent for prosperity, growth and total success!
