A Message from Dr. Skrade This year, our theme this year is create. How fitting for Sacred Heart Cathedral, a community formed in faith through a unity of vision modeled by our Daughters of Charity and our Christian Brothers! Of course, as Pope Francis reflects, this can only happen together:

To Persevere Amid Life’s Ups and Downs: Our students work hard in the classroom, on the field and court, in the stands and onstage. Throughout the fall, seniors worked with English faculty to refine their college admissions essays—one step closer to joining our proud alum community. Student-athletes signed letters of intent to play at the college level at prestigious institutions such as Notre Dame, UCLA, UConn and Harvard. Our student performers had audiences in awe of their edgy production of The Crucible.

A Joy Lived in Communion: As educators, we create a supportive environment that inspires lifelong learning. We create a school home where students are empowered to become their best selves. We create meaningful relationships by accepting students as they are while ensuring they achieve the promise of their God-given gifts. We create a culture where our success is measured by the ways in which we dedicate ourselves to the service of others. With the new year on the horizon, this issue of SHC Magazine invites us to take a moment to reflect on the many ways we have engaged with this theme.

St. Anthony’s serves 2,400 meals a day, meeting the needs of veterans, seniors, the working poor, homeless and low-income residents, and recent immigrants, of whom 73 percent live alone. Eating and praying is their only daily community experience. What a powerful service immersion program for our sophomores.

class of 2023 GAVIN BERMUDEZ I chose SHC for numerous reasons. I love that it is a city-centric school, located in the heart of San Francisco, with neighbors like the SFJAZZ Center, SF Symphony, and much more.

I was greatly impressed by the Visual & Performing Arts Program. I play the piano, and I love that there are many opportunities to perform and further develop my musical abilities. I also chose SHC for its strong academics, and I was very excited to be a part of the De Paul Scholar Program.

Going from grammar school to high school was a little challenging, but it has been made easier by friends and family.

SEAN TOM I chose Sacred Heart Cathedral because when I first visited through Irish for a Day, I fell In love with the community. SHC is so welcoming, and I knew that was where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life. My transition from grammar school to high school has been smooth so far. At first I thought that it would be rough because I was coming from a relatively small school, but it was quite the opposite. It is so easy to make friends at SHC because everyone is so friendly. Something that surprised me about my experience so far is how much school spirit there is. The rallies are schoolwide gatherings where the dance team performs, there are student produced videos, and students are brought in to participate in entertaining games.

I take part in Theater Tech Crew, Kiva Club, and Earth Action Club. Outside of school, I take piano and art lessons weekly. My favorite class so far is History because rather than just memorizing dates and facts, we do engaging projects and critical thinking assignments that relate historical events with outside of the classroom issues. I am most excited about learning life-long skills that can be used in school and out of school. SHC in a word: Welcoming.

In addition to Joe Cronin ’24 (left), Harry Heilmann 1912 (far left) is also enshrined in Cooperstown. This item was in the news recently as Cronin was the last Washington manager to bring that city’s team to the World Series before this year’s champion Nationals.

Every year, Instructor of Religious Studies Ismael Ruiz invites Holocaust survivors to come to share their stories with SHC students. This semester, George Album (survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising), and Anne Marie Yellin (hidden child, survivor from Belgium), spoke to SHC students in the Chorus Studio. Anne Marie Yellin implored, “It’s very important that your generation makes the difference … make sure something like this never happens again.”

SLI Students Visit INTERSTICE On Tuesday, November 4, 25 students from the SHC's Student Launch Initiative (SLI) met with architects from INTERSTICE, the firm leading the design of the new De Paul Gallery. The students had spent the previous week working in groups representing the different user profiles of the space and developing ideas about what the redesign needs to offer. As they met over a pizza dinner, the students shared the results of their findings with the architects, including lead Andrew Dunbar, shown above.

Dons Snag Stevenson, Narottam to Harvard Irish baseball players Owen Stevenson ’20 and Uday Narottam ’20 recently committed to play at the next level, Stevenson with the University of San Francisco and Narottam with Harvard University. Owen shared with the Examiner, “They want me to pitch as a freshman … That’s one of the factors that made me want to go there. Coach Margi Does It Again Girls Varsity Volleyball Head Coach Margi Beima hit a milestone 500 wins this fall. The victory came during the annual Serve It Up Tournament against Palo Alto High School. CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti ’86 told the San Francisco Chronicle, “It’s impressive that she led her teams to 500 wins, but more so how she did it. You watch her teams and her staff and they play with such joy and yet compete at the highest level.

She’s truly a role model for all coaches.”

As the saying goes, Earth is what we all have in common. A small, but mighty group at SHC is working to make the school greener, believing that simple steps make way for impactful strides.

Moderated by Lauren Wild ’99, the Earth Action Club (EAC) leans into initiatives like Crayola Colorcycle, a marker recycling program that takes the empty tubes and “uses advanced plastic conversion technologies to make wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles as well as to generate electricity that can be used to heat homes, cook food, and power vehicles.”

The club has also partnered with the Visual & Performing Arts Department to create visual cues that remind students which items are compostable, recyclable and contribute to landfill. EAC’s nature cam enables students to remotely check in on a caterpillar metamorphosis and they are given the opportunity to volunteer at a butterfly habitat restoration project at Stow Lake.

Finally, the teenagers grow succulents and herbs in a community garden off of the La Salle courtyard and take part in beach cleanups. All of these efforts are student-led.

EAC President Olivia Scancarelli ’20 has been active in the organization for three years. Her biggest environmental concern is global warming and climate change. “We see that ocean levels are rising, weather patterns are becoming more extreme, and more species are forced to migrate, adapt or risk extinction, she explained, “It’s devastating that humans are mostly at fault as more areas are being developed and large amounts of fossil fuels are being burned, adding more carbon emissions to the atmosphere.” Scancarelli urges teens to take action before more natural resources are compromised and wildlife is lost. She suggests that cutting back on plastic, carrying reusable water bottles, taking public transportation, carpooling, and reducing shower times are small changes that can make a big difference.

EAC also provides education through posted reminders of how their peers can live more consciously by shaking their hands dry before reaching for a paper towel and then folding it to maximize absorbency or turning off the lights when they leave the room. Every effort counts.

Cathedral alumnae hold their school traditions close to their hearts: Game Day, Play Day, Move Up Day, Memory Books, the list goes on and on. There is one Cathedral tradition that alumnae treasure most: the Big/Little Sister program. I

t’s not easy to pour a ladleful of bolognese quickly without getting the plate a little messy. I stood on the meal preparation line at the St. Anthony’s Dining Room, meticulously pouring pasta sauce, trying my absolute best to be efficient, fast, and precise. A regular volunteer stood beside me and loaded the trays with pasta, I ladled the sauce, and the SHC sophomore on my left carefully sprinkled parmesan cheese on top. We were just one small part of the massive operation that occurs each day at St. Anthony’s—a culmination of countless hands coming together to serve vulnerable communities with dignity and respect.

Throughout meal service, the shift supervisor repeated, “Keep it clean, keep it tight,” and never hesitated to stop the line if the volunteers were moving too fast and letting things get too messy. With items like chicken fricassee, coq a vin, and seafood alfredo over risotto, it’s easy to mistake the St. Anthony’s Dining Room menu with one from a four-star San Francisco restaurant. At St. Anthony’s, just as important as the meal itself, is the manner in which it is prepared, plated, and served.

And this is what the shift supervisor impressed upon the volunteers by constantly reminding us to keep it clean, keep it tight—that is: serve as if this is a four-star restaurant because these guests deserve no less.

St. Anthony’s has been providing essential support to San Francisco residents living in poverty since 1950. One meal per day is served 365 days per year in the Dining Room, and in addition to meal service, St. Anthony’s also offers a free clothing program, a medical clinic, addiction recovery services, a social work center, a technology lab and more. Located in the Tenderloin, St. Anthony’s guests range from homeless individuals to families struggling with housing insecurity, from those with substance addictions to the working poor.

ANTHONY’S SERVICE IMMERSION SHC’s service-learning program is embedded into the curriculum in a way that allows students to engage in organized service at every single grade level, and 2019 marks the 20th anniversary year that SHC sophomores have served at St. Anthony’s. From the very beginning, the partnership with St. Anthony’s has been supported by the English Department which incorporates the service immersion experience in its sophomorelevel lesson plans. In the early days of the program, students served at St. Anthony’s shortly after reading Sanda Cisneros’ House on Mango Street. Following their service, students would then write vignettes describing their experience. Longtime Instructor of English David Pardini ’80 says, “The Sophomore Immersion Project promotes class unity in fulfilling our school's credo because all sophomores share this immersion experience of entering to learn and leaving to serve. Students at a formative stage in

their development into young adults have the extraordinary opportunity to go beyond the rhetoric, politics and prejudice surrounding the issue of poverty and find out for themselves what the truth is and what can be done. Classes and their teachers additionally enjoy the chance to bond over the challenges and joys offered by that special day.”

In order to provide context for their time at St. Anthony’s prior to their service date, students learn about substance abuse, addiction, and the issues that can arise from food insecurity and poverty in the classroom. Then, the morning of their service, students gather together in the SHC Chapel along with their teachers and Ms. Julia Rinaldi, SHC’s associate director of community life. They begin their immersion here with prayer and meditation. “SHC is committed to social justice education, and that means at St. Anthony’s they’re not just serving food, but they are contemplating critical questions like: why are people in our country going hungry?” Rinaldi says.

“Ultimately, we want our students to understand that what they learn at SHC can be used to benefit humanity.

As the students make their way to St. Anthony’s, they COMMUNITY LIFE engage in what Rinaldi calls a mini street retreat—they walk to the dining hall from the SHC campus in pairs, responding to prompts dealing with social justice. Once at St. Anthony’s students are met by a volunteer coordinator who shares St. Anthony’s history, and outlines their core values: healing, community, personalism, justice, gratitude. All of this work— in the classroom and in conversation—is done in an effort to prepare the students for the work they will engage in and for their interactions with individuals whose life experiences are likely completely different from their own.

Once students are placed in and arrive at their service sites, which can range from the Dining Room to the free clothing program or the adult day health center, their only task is to be present and do the work. Sometimes that means pausing to ensure that their station on the meal line

is tidy, or sorting through seemingly endless amounts of donated clothing, or helping an older adult log on to the internet. Sometimes the work is forward-facing and one-on-one, sometimes the work is behind-the-scenes and out of the spotlight.

ALTRUISM AND THE “HELPER’S HIGH” Emblazoned above the entrances to both the SHC La Salle and De Paul campuses is our school motto: Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve. It is an idea that our students contemplate and activate during their time at SHC and beyond. Then, there’s the idea of the helper’s high, a theory articulated by researchers describing the feel-good aspect of altruism: giving produces endorphins in the brain. At a school where service is at the very foundation of the mission, how do we ensure that the human desire to feel good by doing good doesn’t outweigh the importance of the work to be done? Rinaldi shares, “We always remind our students that the service immersion experience is not about them. It is about fulfilling a need. We’re not going to fix everything. We’re not going to save everyone. We engage with curiosity and with empathy, not with pity. It doesn’t matter what religion you are, growing these qualities in our students really prepares them to be global citizens.”

The dynamic between students and the individuals they serve at St. Anthony’s is more layered than one might imagine, as Erika Hapa, group volunteer coordinator at St. Anthony’s explains. “SHC students provide St. Anthony’s guests with basic essentials: the feeling of belonging, students regard them with respect and honor their inherent dignity. The positive impact this has on our community cannot be overstated. Our guests also have a way of making the students feel like

they uniquely matter. The community in our programs also see the students as the younger generation, one they feel the need to protect and give words of advice to. The impactful relationship goes both ways, and endures beyond the few hours of service they spend with us.”

THE GOOD AND THE GOD IN EVERYONE In the St. Anthony’s Dining Room, guests are seated and then the meals are served to them, one by one. Guests are not asked to push meal trays down a service line themselves, they are invited as guests to take a seat at the table. One of the most profound aspects of the service immersion at St. Anthony’s is the opportunity students have to sit down and have lunch alongside guests. “We sit and break bread with all the guests there.

That shifts the paradigm of service—the idea that the person serving is above the person being served. For a moment in time we’re all eating the same food, sitting at the same table, seeing the good and God in each other,” says Rinaldi.

Instructor of English Jim Jordan has accompanied sophomores on their service immersion since the program’s inception. He adds, “The whole point of an SHC education is to learn that grades, diplomas and degrees are only valuable if you can use what you've learned to make the world a better place. Spending a full day in the Tenderloin at age 15, working with and for our city's marginalized, gives our students more than just

perspective—it fosters genuine respect for the dignity of each person they encounter. If we're going to solve the systemic problems that lead to people living on the fringes, we have to begin with empathy. The St. Anthony's experience makes that real for our students.”

After the service portion of the day is complete, students are invited to reflect on their experiences, led by a staff member at St. Anthony’s. The immersion is often followed by class assignments within the English department, and the impact of the experience can ripple outward for years.

ENTER TO LEARN, LEAVE (AND RETURN) TO SERVE The SHC Class of 1999 recently held a three-day reunion event celebrating their 20th graduation anniversary, and serving at St. Anthony’s was on the itinerary. Reunion planning committee member Cathy Collette ’99 reflects, “I've always associated SHC with service and thought an afternoon at St. Anthony’s would be a nice fit. Volunteering at St. Anthony’s was eye-opening, I'm glad there has been so much positive feedback around it. I hope other classes follow our lead."

In recent years, Rinaldi has opened the Sophomore Service Immersion opportunity to current parents and alumni. More and

more, adult members of our community are joining. Hapa shares, “The SHC alumni community is far-reaching. Former students bring friends, family, and colleagues long after they graduate. We are so grateful for these connections that last a lifetime.”

Christina Marcon, parent of a sophomore and two alumni, has accompanied each of her sons on their St. Anthony’s service immersion. She reflects on the impact the experience has had on her family, “It is one thing to talk about addiction and homelessness to our kids, but at St. Anthony’s they see it and experience it.

My sons all developed empathy as well as an understanding that it doesn’t just happen to “bad” people, it can happen to anyone. It is truly a wonderful immersion and I hope SHC continues it for years to come.”

While the immersion does provide a tremendous, real-world learning opportunity for our students, Rinaldi doesn’t share the same sentiment for the program moving into the future. “I agree with those at St. Anthony’s who hope that the foundation closes—because that would mean there is no longer a need. That would be my ultimate joy, as well. In the meantime, while there still is a need, I hope more faculty and staff experience the day. I hope that this program is something we always value, no matter what is going on in the world, that we keep partnering with St. Anthony’s where they’re at.”

WALKATHON AT

1989

By Clarissa Mendiola This academic year marked a milestone 30-year anniversary for SHC’s only student-led fundraiser—the Walkathon.

Students raised a record-breaking $240,000. The face of this year’s Walkathon, Advancement Associate Erica Hipp ’13, says, “This year's Walkathon was a huge success because of the hard work and support from our students, faculty, staff and parent volunteers. What better way to end a milestone year than with a record-breaking fundraising total!”

The Walkathon has helped to fund countless improvements to the SHC student experience including: the transformation of our science facilities, the Fitness Center, the Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center, the Herbst Library & Information Center, the Strength & Conditioning Weight Room, the Student Launch Initiative, scholarships and more. This year, proceeds from the Walkathon will benefit the creation of De Paul Gallery—an informal gathering and collaborative learning space for students located on the De Paul Campus for the Arts.

The first Walkathon was inspired by an athletics fundraiser led

by Coach Steve Franceschi more than three decades ago. Baseball players secured by-the-foot pledges from family, friends and local businesses, and then stepped up to the plate in an attempt to hit the ball as far as possible, earning money for every foot measured. The hit-a-thon often funded travel expenses for the team. Brett Lowart, a former faculty member and current president of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, approached Coach Fran and asked him how to replicate the fundraiser to include the entire school. Coach replied, “It’s easy,” and soon the Walkathon was born. The original organizers of the event combined the community-building aspects of Founders Day with the money-raising perks of the hit-a-thon.

While technology and the advent of the internet has helped the Walkathon evolve over the years, stripped down, it is exactly the same fundraiser that Coach Fran led for his team so many years ago. Coach reflects, “One of the reasons the Walkathon is so successful year after year, is because everyone on staff has a job, and we do our jobs thoroughly and without complaint. Whether it is driving supplies in a big-rig to the Polo Fields, or flipping burgers on the meadow, everyone knows their role and they get the work done.”

Mike McNeill: SHC & Glens Soccer Partnership Yields Immediate Dividends

U

nder a hazy summer sky at Beach Chalet, a buzz of activity surrounds three of the fields as the collaboration between SHC Summer Institute and Glens Soccer Camp goes forward.

On one field, a gaggle of fourth through sixth graders run through drills under the watchful eyes of SHC soccer players and adult coaches. On another pitch, rising middle school players fiercely scrimmage both each other and a squad comprised of Glens Evolution soccer club players and coaches. Finally, on a far field, a team of high school Glens players are practicing in preparation for the next week’s competitive trip to Spain, different skills being honed under the guidance of both their own coaches as well as visiting personnel from German club Holstein Kiel, the Glens’ new trans-Atlantic partner.

Overseeing all of this activity is Mike McNeill, SHC varsity boys soccer coach and Executive Director of SF Glens.

For someone running the city’s largest soccer club and who is in the center of a blur of activity, McNeill is disarmingly young. A former San Francisco State player, McNeill hooked up with the club in 2013 while coaching the JV squad at another City high school and has been rising through the ranks ever since.

Primarily an adult club since its founding in 1961, Glens started their youth program two years before McNeill arrived and has expanded from 12 teams to over 70 today, including involvement with the US Soccer Development Academy, the highest level of youth soccer in America. “Glens

was founded by the Irish community here in San Francisco, the immigrants here, and it was mostly a social club,” McNeill shared. “It’s been a part of the San Francisco Soccer League and the adult league.” Today, Glens competes in USL League 2, one of the highest American minor leagues for soccer, a combination of collegiate players and former professionals trying to make it back to back to the bigs. Included in this mix is SHC players and alums. “It’s really a mish mash of incredible talent. But for our players, SHC players and players at the Glens, it’s a huge opportunity for these guys to be exposed to college and pro athletes.” Last year in the MLS draft, 70 percent of the players came from USL League 2 and Glens alone had four drafted, including two in the first round.

Results and growth are only part of McNiell’s vision, however. The partnership with Holstein Kiel is a strategic partnership entered into by the club in order to share training methods, best practices and philosophy with a similar program across the globe. “It’s really exciting,” McNeill said. “It’s their first-ever international partnership. They’re a division 2 (Bundesliga) club, so they’re not Real Madrid or anything, but it makes sense because we’re in similar positions. We are a club with a team in the USL League 2, which is the fourth division of American soccer, and we have ambitions to grow that into the professional league.” While Major League Soccer Glens team may be a pipedream right now, “In the immediate future we want to grow through the ranks of USL, and Holstein Kiel are doing the same

thing. What we both value is youth development and the reason we started our USL team is to give players in our club, players at SHC, your Diego Grandes ’21, your Devin McNamaraPittlers ’21, your Declan O’Flynns ’21, the opportunity to play at the highest level they’re allowed to.” In October, a club comprised of almost half SHC players journeyed to San Antonio, TX for the inaugural United Soccer League Academy Cup where the squad finished undefeated.

Regarding this relationship with SHC, McNeill said “First off, I’m really, really excited to be a part of SHC. Last year we had a fantastic year, we won the CCS and we went to the NorCal Regional Final for the first time in school history. It’s tough to follow up that success this year, but our goal is to go one better and win the NorCal Regional Finals. I think with the players we have, and the freshmen players that are coming in now, I’d be hard-pressed to know of a better frosh class across the section than what we have coming in this year.” Of the WCAL as a whole, the quality of competition has impressed McNeill greatly. “It’s an incredibly competitive league, with teams that are really well coached with incredible players. The competition is real.”

Affirming his belief that the league is one of the top in Northern California, if not the entire state, McNeill remembered “SI won our league, but didn’t win their division final. Bellarmine won the open division, Mitty won the second division, we won the third division. It’s crazy!”

Out of this pre-existing relationship with the school came the joint Summer Institute soccer camp. “It was initially the brainchild of John Gumina ’91, although I’d always thought of something like this, even before I started at SHC. I didn’t know if it was doable, then John pitched me the idea and we ran with it and as you can see, it’s a success. We have about 72 kids now and there’s no reason why we can’t grow that number next year.”

Perhaps the most meaningful endeavor McNeill heads is Glens for Good, an arm of the club that last year gave $95,000 worth of scholarships to its players while at the same time raising funds for people in need both in our community as well as around the world. “We are a non-profit

organization, but since we’re in the competitive soccer world it doesn’t necessarily always feel like we’re a benefit to society,” McNeill said. “We’ve done both boot and jersey drives that we’ve sent over to Congo and Senegal, down to El Salvador, etc. Our focus these coming years is to focus Glens for Good on the low income communities here in San Francisco.” As for how Glens connects with these various communities and clubs around the globe and at home, “It’s a big world, but soccer is a really small community—families within the club that have family that play in

clubs in other countries, working with other nonprofit organizations, all of this has helped us branch out as well.”

For a young man with a lot of responsibilities and a lot of energy, McNeill remains a centered and thoughtful addition to the SHC community. His commitment to both youth development and charitable giving fit in perfectly with our Lasallian Vincentian philosophies, and both Glens and Sacred Heart Cathedral are better for it.

cross COUNTRY In his 22nd season as head coach, Coach Andy Chan, and his 65-member cross country team had another great campaign. In their first competition of the season, the Irish had 4 medalists at the Monte Vista meet: Ciaran Trevino ’21, Tessa House ’20, Sabrina House ’20, and Sedge Greenlee ’20. For the sixth time, the Irish program travelled to Seaside, Oregon to participate in the Three Course Challenge in September. This four-night trip included traveling by Amtrak to and from Portland, staying overnight at Camp Rilea, and a challenging course with a mud pit. The meet featured over 1,500 runners from more than 70 different schools, and the Irish placed second in their division for both the Boys and the Girls. The JV Girls and JV Boys also took first place at the Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay in early October.

Finishing up the season, the program had an incredible WCAL meet, with both varsity squads qualifying for the CCS meet and, potentially, state. The JV Girls set the tone for the day, lead by Iris Yee ’20 in third and Reese Wellbeloved ’23 in fourth. Once the varsity began, Lowell transfer Andrew Blelloch ’21 (brother of running sibling Jessica ’19) set a new school record with a time of 15:20, finishing fifth overall, and was later named First Team WCAL. Sabina House ’20 and Liz Nip ’22 both broke 20 minutes, helping the Varsity Girls join the boys in the sectional meet.

Overall, the Irish had 38 personal records at the WCAL meet, totaling more than 29 minutes.

Once at CCS, the Irish didn’t stop, with both teams finishing in second place and qualifying for the State meet November 30 in Fresno. Way to go, Irish Cross Country!

FOOTBALL With a squad including only 11 seniors on varsity, the Irish experienced a season of growing pains in 2019, failing to win a contest for the first time since the 1973 season. While painful, the young squad gained valuable insight into what kind of commitment and dedication it will take to turn the program around and be competitive again in the brutal WCAL next season: of their 10 opponents this year, nine of them made either the CCS or NCS postseason tournaments with an aggregate record of 60-30. Continued offseason playbook study with Coach Barry McLaughlin’s staff and training led by Coach Colin Peuse will be essential in returning the Irish to relevance.

“2019 was a humbling experience for the program,” Coach Mac said. “The team committed to the off-season program as much as any team I have coached, but inexperience combined with injuries really caught up to the team this year.”

While the team didn’t achieve the success it wanted this season, there were individual standouts, including First Team All WCAL honorees QB Cian Dowling ’21, DL/OL Evan BranchHaynes ’21, and WR/DB Tyrice Ivy Jr. ’21, all set to return next season. In addition, this group will be bolstered in 2020 by a promising freshman squad that went 3-6 with league wins over St. Ignatius 18-0 and Valley Christian. “We will have possibly over 40 returning players to combine with a strong frosh team on next season’s varsity,” said Coach Mac. “GO IRISH!”

girls GOLF Under the leadership of coach KC Murphy, Girls Golf finished the year with a satisfying 4-6 record, recording two wins each over St. Ignatius and Presentation. The team finished fourth in the season-ending WCAL Championship, narrowly missing a spot in the CCS golf tournament. Earlier in the season, the squad participated in the Helen Lengfeld Tournament played at Poplar Creek, finishing 11th out of 17th teams in the prestigious competition.

Perhaps most impressively, the team as a whole earned a CCS Academic Award for being one of the top five girls golf programs in the entire section in cumulative GPA (3.775).

Overall team awards went to Alexa Weaver ’20 (All League Honorable Mention), Melissa Weaver ’20, and Tiffany Chen ’23. Further evidence of the program’s progress is that a whopping 7 out of 10 of this year’s team will be back next year.

girls TENNIS Irish tennis broke even in 2019, finishing with an 11-11 overall record. This doesn’t tell the whole tale, however, as some notable victories were achieved, namely league wins over Valley Christian and St. Ignatius. In fact, coach Amy Kleckner recently shared, “This year’s team was one of the best I’ve ever had. They really came together in the pre-season; they united in friendship and hard work, and that led to their many successes this season.”

Krysta Szeto ’20 (First Team All WCAL) was chosen the team’s MVP for her consistently excellent play, finishing the season strong with back-to-back wins against Archbishop Mitty and Presentation at the # 1 singles position. Kara Dobers ’20 (Second Team All WCAL) played no. 4 singles and had a season record of 16-6, earning the coveted team Seamus Award. The doubles tandems of Olivia Scancarelli ’20 & Claire Ambre ’21 and Lauren Havlin ’20 (Most

Spirited) & Saila Holsman ’21 were recognized for their play by both receiving Honorable Mention All WCAL nods. Lastly, Claire Winslow ’20 was awarded the team’s Most Improved player. Newcomers to the Varsity team this year were Emma Pollasky ’22 and Marsella Johnson ’22, and they will definitely be athletes in this program to watch in the future. Similarly, Holsman is another student athlete to keep an eye on, as she seems ready to step into a leadership role next year and help lead the program to even greater heights.

VOLLEYBALL Of all the teams Coach Margi Beima has produced over her phenomenal 20-year career at SHC (17 leading the varsity), the 2019 edition was undoubtably one of her finest. For the second year in a row, the Irish powered to both a WCAL title as well a CCS Open Division championship, emerging from the section as the no. 2 seed in the NorCal Open Division tournament. That these achievements have been gained despite crucial injuries to key performers during the season speaks volumes about the program and the culture of success it fosters. Similarly, that this season corresponded to Coach Beima’s 500th career victory only highlights how fortunate SHC is to have her in our family.

Quick to the middle

The Irish were powered all season by a stellar senior class, highlighted by OH Skylar Canady ’20 (UCLA commit, WCAL POY, First Team All WCAL, American Volleyball Coaches Association all-regional team), Alden Standley ’20 (Washington University, St. Louis commit, First Team All WCAL), and Ashley Chan ’20 (Second Team All WCAL). Not to be forgotten were the contributions of UC Davis commit Megan Lenn ’20 (missed half the season with a broken knuckle), middles Nora Thompson '20 (Second Team All WCAL) and Sophie Seljeseth ’20, who gave no ground against taller players, and explosive opposite hitter Sarah Cheng ’20 (Honorable Mention All WCAL). Before injuring her ACL in early October, DS Alyssa Taylor ’21 was a solid contributor in the Irish rotation, and Alyssa Lee ’20 and OH Amaya Keiper ’21 (Honorable Mention All WCAL) played key roles all year.

While the Irish weren’t able to win the state title in California’s top division this year, it has been a memorable run for this group of players. They beat traditional powerhouse Archbishop Mitty five times (once in the CCS final), downed St. Ignatius twice (the last one on the road to clinch the league title), and competed in the prestigious Durango Tournament against many of the nation’s elite teams in Las Vegas in September. or families with children nearing high school age, SHC’s Summer and Winter Institutes provide the most authentic SHC experience a grammar school student can get. The institutes are instructed by current SHC faculty, both current students and recent alumni serve as support staff, and nearly all of the camps and workshops take place here on SHC’s campus, right in the heart of the City.

Fun Facts: summer Summer Institute instructors leverage our strategic location in San Francisco to lead students on multiple field trips each week.

Destinations include: De Young Museum, Japantown, San Francisco Botanical Garden, Ferry Building Farmers Market, and more; More than 20 enrichment courses and 14 sports academies take place over the course of 6 weeks, with 500 students participating each week; Camper favorite: lemonade served at lunch!

11 daylong enrichment courses and 7 sports clinics are offered over the course of three months

SHC’s Summer Institute is a series of one-week enrichment courses and sports academies for students and athletes ages 8-14. The Winter Institute provides exciting learning opportunities to 6th-8th graders in daylong workshops that take place from November to February each year.

As Vice President for Advancement and Enrollment John Gumina ’91 recalls, the impetus behind the Summer Institute was the success of the SHC Hall of Fame Baseball Academy.

“We have dozens of sports academies modeled after the Hall of Fame Baseball Academy, as well as countless enrichment weeks in a variety of exciting topics. About 1,000 kids come to SHC each summer, and we owe that success to the HoF.” In fact, the Hall of Fame Baseball Academy was running for nearly two decades before the Summer Institute began.

After the Summer Institute started building steam, SHC began offering workshops to grammar school students over winter break, thus establishing the Winter Institute.

The purpose of the Summer and Winter Institutes is simple: give families as many opportunities as possible to get to know the school. From an enrollment perspective, students who participate in the institutes and eventually matriculate to SHC experience a smoother transition into high school life. John explains, “They have taken the time to get to know us, and often feel good about what they’re heading toward as future SHC students. This is part of how our vibrant community is built—students who know us come to SHC and they’ve built confidence by getting to know our school and they are willing to try new things here.”

With summer and winter topics ranging from coding to chorus, studio art to rocketry, forensic science to the chemistry of food, students can spend their time outside of the academic year immersed in topics they find interesting. Athletes at every skill level in a variety of sports can improve technique while making friends and having fun.

Families often praise the Summer Institute for its flexibility—a student can attend one week, or up to six weeks, depending on interests and family schedules. In the winter, daylong workshops help to keep students engaged over the midpoint of their academic year. Ultimately, the success of the institutes is easily illustrated in parent feedback. “Coach Steve Franceschi always says the best feedback he gets from parents is that after attending the Baseball Academy, kids will go home and ask to attend games with their families and talk about their love of the sport,” John says.

Looking ahead, John hopes to grow the institutes by responding to family interests and offering new and exciting topics. “Learning happens here all year, and I want our Summer and Winter Institutes to be a place where students know they will have amazing experiences. If you want to learn something during summer break or over the winter, you come to SHC.”

In the past, the i2 program consisted of yearly projects that provided a great deal of opportunity for individualized exploration or personal passions. This year, leadership has decided to emphasize the spirit of each individual class year, as well as provide more cohesive guidance, by moving towards an Academic Exploration (AE) model at each level.

Theater productions at SHC are a signature of the work ethic, passion, and boundless talent of our students. The sold-out run of SHC’s production of The Crucible wowed audiences with a steampunk inspired interpretation of Arthur Miller’s classic drama. Countless hours of rehearsals and set building, beautiful costumes and fantastic make-up, and professional-level sound and lighting made for yet another stunning fall play. Bravo!

Cornelius “Neil” Patrick Lyons ’54 Neil Patrick Lyons ’54 passed away peacefully on September 29, 2019, surrounded by loved ones at home. Neil was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from Sacred Heart in 1954. He joined the US Army in 1957 and was stationed in Alaska. Neil was a member of the IBEW Local #6, and later worked for McClure Electric, Inc. where he became business partners with his lifelong friend until retirement in 2013. He served on many committees for the San Francisco Electrical Contractors Association and was always proud of his accomplishments in his field. Neil and his wife, Clara, had four children and eight grandchildren. They raised their family in Burlingame and then moved to San Mateo upon retirement. Neil was passionate about cars and boats, and spent many weekends and vacations at his home in Tahoe Donner with his family. Those who knew him remember his generosity and his boundless love for his family.

Walter Vladimir Kushnir ’60 Dr. Walter Kushnir ’60 passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2019. While at Sacred Heart High School, Walt was a star baseball player, and his team was inducted into the SHC Athletic Hall of Fame. He proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and eventually went on to continue his education, receiving a Doctorate of Psychology. He was a lifelong educator, serving as a professor at the College of the Sequoias, and the University of San Francisco Baccalaureate program in Visalia. Walt was also actively involved in the Visalia Sequoia Bobby Sox and George McCann Memorial Catholic School communities. He and his wife, Noreen, had three daughters and nine grandchildren. Throughout his lifetime, Walt instilled in his family the things for which he cared deeply: faith, love, Russian traditions, his passion for hunting, fishing, and reading.

Gerald “Jerry” Phillips Gerald “Jerry” Phillips, longtime basketball coach at Sacred Heart High School and a member of both the Sacred Heart Cathedral and San Francisco Prep Halls of Fame, passed away on June 23, 2019 at the age of 85. A beloved faculty member SHC from 1956–2013 and head coach from 1962-85, Jerry later went on to coach at Las Lomas High School from 1990-95, accumulating numerous titles between the two programs. Jerry was a graduate of Fremont High (1952) and Saint Mary’s College of California (1956) and he led the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys basketball program to numerous West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) titles and Tournament of Champions appearances, compiling a 512-294 record.

Amongst his most notable achievements was winning the last AAA crown for the Fightin’ Irish in 1969 before entering the WCAL and capturing the school’s first CCS title in 1972. Known for his ability to win with less talent than his opponents, Jerry taught the game in a way that inspired countless former players to become coaches. Jerry and his wife, Janice, built a beautiful family—five children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
