A Message from President Scudder Happy birthday, Sacred Heart Cathedral. It is hard to believe you are 25 years old. I remember the day you were born!

It has been an amazing journey, and all should be quite proud of the school SHC has become. You never achieve success alone. Whether in life or in business, one can always trace success to a foundational experience.

Whether it be the support of family or friends, or the sage advice of a mentor, something or someone inspires one to succeed.

Sacred Heart Cathedral’s foundational experience resides in the spirit of the Daughters of Charity and the De La Salle Christian Brothers. The charisms of the Daughters and the Brothers are the rock upon which we built the school. While buildings and names have changed, the spirit of our school has remained the same. Every day for the last 25 years, and for that matter the last 160 years, our students have come downtown to learn from each other and to care for one another in a way that exemplifies the spirit of our Founders.

This edition of Second Century, while commemorating the past, celebrates our bold steps toward the next 25 years. Sacred Heart Cathedral has no intention of playing small. Studies reveal that nearly half of the jobs our present student body will secure in their future do not exist at this moment; it is imperative that SHC provides a curriculum that is relevant, rigorous, relational and reflective. Finally, while all this change is swirling around our 21st-century learners, SHC can instill an absolute constant in their lives: their faith in God, their hope in a bright future and their love of self and others.

Read and enjoy the pages that follow. If you think that these last 25 years have been special, you haven’t seen anything yet! To quote an old Sacred Heart cheer, “Irish on the move!”

TOOLS OF THE TRADE Technology at SHC

If you visit SHC, don’t be surprised if you see students texting on their phones during class and not getting in trouble for it. In fact, chances are their teachers told them to do it.

“If you think about the way the world operates today, you’ll realize that kids are on the devices, so we have to leverage that,” says Ramsey Musallam, science department chair and subject of a May 2012 article “How Teachers Make Cell Phones Work in the Classroom” on KQED’s MindShift blog. Musallam uses cell phones in class to poll students on questions related to the day’s lesson, and away from class when asking students to watch video lectures of class content at home. “It’s cool to them,” Musallam explains, “so let’s use it.”

Musallam is just one of the innovative educators at SHC using technology to their advantage. “My English teacher last year, Matt Nuttall, and my teacher this year, Jim Jordan, have been pioneers,” says Gina Campanelli ’14. The SHC junior describes the students’ excitement when the instructors use Today’s Meet, an online discussion platform, to help facilitate their courses. “My favorite application was when our English department had us chat live during the presidential debates,” she says.

SHC’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, officially set to launch schoolwide in fall 2013, will further allow teachers and students to utilize technology and choose a tool that best suits their teaching and learning style. “It’s not about what our students know, but, rather, how they learn,” explains Joan O’Neill, assistant principal of academics at SHC. “We saw a need and interest to design learning by students,” she says.

Students can choose any type of device they want, including laptop computers, iPads, iPhones, other smart phones or Chromebooks, so long as they meet the Technology Department’s minimum capability specifications. Equity of access is an important issue as well. SHC aims to assure that all students have these tools at their fingertips.

Thanks to a generous gift from the Parents Association, all students will have access to carts full of iPads and Chromebooks that travel to classes, and loaners that can be checked out of the library.

Having a preferred device to access information is one aspect of the technology changes, but the real motivation behind these moves is an understanding that this generation of SHC students are “digital natives,” according to Christine Buell, assistant principal for student life. Buell, cofounder of the Bay Area Catholic Schools Online Classroom (BACSOC), suggests that much can be learned if educators capitalize on the technological fluency of students today. “It has revolutionized my teaching,” she says.

Buell began using online teaching as a way to reevaluate her approach to face-to-face education.

Through facilitating her online class in Art History, which is available to students who have the interest and focus for taking a seventh class, she has realized the increased potential when students direct their own learning.

“I found that when working in an online chat room or discussion board, students were much more willing to take intellectual risks,” Buell says. She also found that students who may be hesitant to let their personalities show in the face-to-face classroom shine online. The breakthroughs she witnessed while teaching online challenged her to rethink education altogether: “I’ve learned I cannot be the sage on the stage. I’m the guide on the side, and it’s so much more effective,” she says.

To this end, SHC is offering a new online stage for students in the form of the newly adopted Learning Management System (LMS) called Schoology, which functions as an educational platform and schoolwide social network. Here students can connect to teachers and peers, access classroom content and post discussions.

When the tools for learning change, so must the curriculum and the execution.

To keep up with the changing technology, SHC staff and administrators have been taking advantage of professional development opportunities that focus on technology.

This past summer, 13 SHC instructors and

administrators attended the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference in San Diego, and SHC itself hosted IntegratED SF, a technology conference presented by the nonprofit Organization for Educational Technology and Curriculum (OETC).

Many SHC teachers across departments have made changes to their classrooms and utilized new techniques that integrate technology into the curriculum. Physics instructor Riaz Abdulla in the Science Department writes his own textbooks through CK-12 Foundation, a nonprofit designed to create open-source resources. These texts still adhere to state standards, but Abdulla is able to design the text to meet the needs of his class. This movement to create course texts also came from a desire to meet students where they are as opposed to directing them to where teachers think they should be. “I feel the students appreciate us not front-loading them with content,” explains Musallam. According to Musallam, technology is simply a medium. “Technology won’t make you a good teacher, but a good teacher using technology well can do ridiculously awesome things,” he says.

PHYSICS FIRST Science Curriculum Change

October 15, 2012: Riaz Abdulla’s physics class sits glued to the monitor, watching Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking sky jump. After watching Baumgartner plummet from space and listening to the students’ exclamations , instructor Abdulla guides the class through the scientific method: You’ve just observed a phenomena. Now try to explain it, then test to see if you are right. Not until the students start asking—begging, even—for the equations to solve the problem of maximum capacity are the answers given.

This type of inquiry-based learning is the driving force behind changes within SHC’s Science Department.

Learning through problem solving is not only a way to engage students, but also a way to maximize learning. “We want student learning fueled by perplexity as opposed to being driven by content,” says Science Department Chair Ramsey Musallam. Get them hungry, Musallam believes, and they’ll keep coming back for more.

This is precisely what administrators and faculty are hoping for when SHC launches Physics First in the fall of 2013, an exciting new science curriculum that bucks the conventional order of biology for freshmen followed by chemistry for sophomores and then physics for juniors and seniors. The updated curriculum will ensure that all freshmen take physics as their first science in high school.

The Science Department is already working closely with the Math Department to make sure students are learning the necessary algebra to be successful in the application of physics. “We are hoping to create a learning environment that ultimately leverages connections between the math and science disciplines,” Musallam says. “One of the things we’re excited about is taking two separate classes (algebra and physics) and eventually having the students see them as one class.”

Although it seems intimidating, Musallam assures that this rejigging of the curriculum is actually more intuitive for students. Unlike biology, the physics curriculum taps into students’ knowledge. “Most kids come into the classroom with some previous understanding of the vocabulary of physics from the world around them: gravity, acceleration, speed,” Musallam explains.

This is not the case with biology: “Only 20% of the 150 freshman students who take biology have had prior experience with subject content,” he says.

By accessing prior knowledge and scaffolding content upon it, students learn the information as opposed to memorizing it. In addition to the stronger understanding and greater skills that come each day when experimentation comes before explanation, the revised ninth grade curriculum makes for a more intuitive segue into other sciences. “After physics for freshmen, we launch into chemistry, which is really like microphysics,” Musallam says. And when the students are ready for biology, junior year, they are armed with all the science and math they learned in the previous two years to make the necessary connections.

“It’s such a great move for our students,” Abdulla explains. “Physics First learning is a 21st-century way of doing science.” Ultimately, he asserts, it lays the foundation for lifelong understanding of and appreciation for the sciences. “That,” he says, “is what we need.”

SHC’s STEM Initiative

Inquiry & Innovation

Have you heard about STEM? At its simplest, STEM is the synergy of science, technology, engineering and mathematics taught together.

At its best, STEM is the basis of a progressive, inspiring curriculum that better meets the needs of the next generation of students.

SHC’s Inquiry & Innovation Program, launching fall 2013, is a dynamic four-year academic and enrichment program that focuses on science, technology and math using projectbased learning and 21st-century learning tools.

“Although viewed as different disciplines, math and science are deeply connected and coordinated topics,” says Science Department Chair Ramsey Musallam. “The Inquiry & Innovation Program and our upcoming Physics First initiative aim to amplify and add context to a student’s math and science experience by embracing natural connections between the disciplines.”

The new program integrates with SHC’s Catholic, college preparatory course of studies, and includes: four-plus years of math, fourplus years of science, one or more computer programming or web design courses, online learning opportunities (e.g., AP Computer Science) and a self-directed capstone project/ portfolio that serves as a culminating experience for the program.

“While an SHC education is grounded in the timeless human questions posed by the liberal arts, learning today must include the hands-on problem-solving and real-world applications of science and technology, which are rapidly changing fields,” says Assistant Principal

for Academics Joan O’Neill. “Designing our curriculum so that all ninth graders enroll in physics and creating the Inquiry & Innovation Program not only develops critical career skills—the US Department of Education estimates 80% of jobs in the next decade will require technology—but also facilitates interdisciplinary learning and engages our emerging scientists, engineers and mathematicians.”

Unlike many STEM programs, SHC’s version includes leadership opportunities in technology; access to a wide array of Honors and Advanced Placement courses; our vibrant humanities curriculum and collaborative service learning; and hands-on summer workshops about design thinking, creativity, gaming, fabrication, robotics and biotechnology. Program members are among SHC’s top applicants, displaying high academic achievement and exemplary standardized test scores. The Inquiry & Innovation Program inspires them to ask critical questions and discover inventive solutions to the complex challenges the future promises. No matter what path an Inquiry & Innovation Program graduate chooses in college, he or she will have the skills required to succeed in a 21st-century career.

Evolution of Science in the Classroom

When I began my teaching career in the fall of 1983 at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, I taught chemistry in the manner I was taught at Santa Clara University, from where I had graduated the previous June.

At Santa Clara, professors lectured students for 50 minutes, four days a week. My peers and I conducted laboratory experiments during a three-hour period once a week. I designed my high school chemistry course at St. Francis in a similar manner. Usually, I lectured students for most of the class period, and one day a week my students would conduct a laboratory experiment.

Reflecting back, I wasn’t purposeful in adopting this lecture/lab model. I didn’t consider other methodologies and

adopt lecture/lab because I believed it to be more effective.

I, and likely fellow science teachers, had adopted lecture/lab because that strategy had worked for us as students. I had done well in school and had enjoyed it, so it made sense to me that I replicate that experience for my students.

Lecture/lab had long been the dominant scienceteaching model, and was in fact an improvement over prior models. It had been developed at universities in North America and Europe in the late 1800s. Prior to that time, science education was primarily lecture-based. Occasionally the instructor would perform classroom demonstrations of various principles, but actual experimentation was limited to advanced research students.

When I started teaching at SHC in 1989, I began a move away from the lecture/lab model, or, more accurately, a move away from lecture. Education nationwide was moving in this direction primarily because academic research was showing that for many students lecturing does not match well with their learning style, and that most students stop absorbing new material after 10-30 minutes of lecture, depending on their age. Around the same time I first heard the term “student-centered learning.” I suspect the emphasis on the student learning (as opposed to the teacher talking) goes back much further. The Founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, St. John Baptist de La Salle, was a pioneer in student-centered teaching. He encouraged his teachers to develop an older-sibling relationship with their students, as opposed to the authoritarian teacher model encouraged by other education-oriented orders within the Church.

My move away from lecture began with having lecture and lab happen during the same class period. I would lecture from 10 to 15 minutes, and then the students would do a lab experiment for the remainder of the period.

I found the students to be much more engaged in their learning, especially when they were at their desks writing 12

up the lab report. They worked together, asking each other questions as they filled out the lab report, and occasionally asking me questions when everyone in the group was stumped. I realized how much more I enjoyed the one-onone and small-group interaction with the students, so I began developing lessons that eliminated lecture as much as possible. I began my lesson planning with the premise, “Is there some activity students can engage in which will teach this concept without me talking at them?”

Now, most of my lessons are non-lecture based. In science education, we call this “hands-on learning.” I continue to develop new hands-on lessons, but now they replace older hands-on lessons. The new ideas come from a variety of sources as I think about what I’m going to teach after the current unit is done, including my head and online resources shared by other science teachers. My SHC science colleagues all embrace hands-on teaching, and we share strategies and activities to inspire learning.

Extraordinary Students

By Sawson Jweinat, Communications Associate Our students are exceptional both inside and outside of the classroom. We can easily spot the students who lead class discussions and are vocal participants, but what about the students whose talents also shine elsewhere?

I had the opportunity to meet with a few students who spend most of their free time in other arenas, whose goals and strong work ethic make a difference in their own lives and inspire the lives of others. From the dojo to the stables, in a boat and on the soccer field, SHC students take advantage of unique opportunities that enable them to fulfill their passions and dreams.

 Jeff Wang ’13 attributes his success to rowing a boat six days a week. He is the men’s 2012 national champion in lightweight double, and won the southwest regional junior championship in 2011 and 2012.

“If it were easy everyone would do it,” explains Wang, who is currently being recruited by Princeton University. Wang’s buddy introduced him to rowing, and, as a very focused freshman, he quickly caught on to the sport and joined the Pacific Rowing Club. Along with his exceptional rowing skills, Wang maintains an unweighted 3.7 GPA and is enrolled in four AP courses.

He has also participated in several triathlons, which helps him relieve stress and teaches him the value of time management. When Wang is not training for an intense regatta or triathlon, he enjoys buying old bikes, restoring and selling them.

Wang plans to continue rowing and study quantitative economics in college.

 Jenna Lewis ’16 found herself inside a dojo at the age of five. While casually joining her friends and older brother to practice the craft, Lewis developed a love for the discipline and competitive nature of karate. Lewis’ commitment and passion bring her to the dojo six days a week for two to three hours a day. When she is not working to improve her own endurance and strength, Lewis teaches four classes to children at lower belt levels.

“I like being appreciated for my talents. Helping others and teaching them how to improve feels good,” she says.

This summer, Lewis will head to Beijing, where she will earn her black belt—the highest belt color, used to denote a degree of competence—and celebrate 10 years of being a member of the karate culture.

 Cofounder of Students Promoting Awareness Raises Knowledge (SPARK), Melissa Bautista ’14 inspires her classmates to educate themselves about disease, and leads them to make a difference.

Bautista makes sure to take advantage of every opportunity to give back to communities that mean something special to her. She has volunteered at several blood drives and worked with the Red Cross Club. After gaining experience in training from participating in these projects, Bautista was ready to lead her own club.

In October 2012, the members of SPARK started an initiative to educate SHC students about breast cancer in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Through announcements, posters, T-shirt sales and bake sales, SPARK raised over $400 to donate to the cause. The group also gathered participants to join the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk held in Golden Gate Park on October 20.

In the following months, SPARK will take part in the Season of Giving along with the rest of the school.

Harrington’s face lights up when she explains the strategy of the game, which brings her classmates and teammates together: “Each player is on the field without their socks and shoes so they can feel what it’s like for other people who play soccer in underserved communities.”

Last year, the girls soccer team helped raise $2,000 for Grassroot Soccer. Harrington hopes that her team’s hard work will help end the spread of HIV.

 Rachel Yuen ’16 loves to fence. Lucky for her, she’s learning from the best: Her instructor is 2008 and 2012 US Olympic fencing coach and three-time US Olympian Maestro Greg Massialas.

Over the past three years, Yuen has practiced four to five times per week for three hours a day, and has won 12 medals. She hopes to fence competitively in college, with the goal of one day taking part in an Olympic competition.

  In the stable, Charlotte Lenny ’13 is every horse’s best friend.

“You have to learn about the horses in order to serve them,” says Lenny, who was first introduced to the stable in the third grade. Riding lessons were just the beginning of her vocation.

At the age of 13, Lenny began training horses three days a week. Her relationships with horses strengthened, and soon she became enough of an expert that people hired her to train their horses. Today, she works full-time on weekends at the stable, where she teaches others how to ride, and trains horses to ensure riders’ safety.

Lenny aims to earn a master’s degree in equine business and have her own horse business.

 Soccer player Sara Harrington ’13 helps support a very important cause: HIV education and relief. Through the girls soccer team, Harrington and a few of her teammates put on a tournament benefitting Grassroots Soccer, a

At the age of nine in 2008, Nicholas Nip ’16 was named the United States Chess Federation (USCF) National Master, and held the title for three years. His interest began at the age of five when he joined his elementary school’s Academic Chess Club. Nip quickly got a feel for the game, was recruited by a coach and started competing in tournaments around the US. “I like how the game makes me think,” says Nip, who loves strategy and considers math his strongest subject.

Nip’s talent was featured on Live with Regis and Kelly, where he played against 10 other chess experts. Within the span of the episode, Nip beat nine players and had one draw.

Bill Tobin and his wife have been living in Middletown, California since 2000. They have five children and 13 grandchildren.

1950 Evelyn Spallas Adams welcomed her first great-grandchild, Milo, into the world. Adams and her husband, Father James, traveled to Greece to celebrate his retirement of 58 years as a Greek Orthodox priest. They have been married for 59 years.

Josephine Gandolfo Amoroso traveled to Sicily to meet her family in May 2012. She lives in San Francisco.

Giovanna Ridondelli Cerruti and husband Marvin Cerruti ’47 live in Marin. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

Colleen MacLeay Courtney lives in Martinez and has been a volunteer for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for the past eight years.

Barbara Michi Hall lives in Murrieta, California. She keeps in touch with her classmates often and has fond memories of her high school days at St. Vincent’s.

Joan Orlando Jordan and husband Joe Jordan ’45 keep busy with their children and grandchildren. They celebrated 59 years of marriage in Cambria, California.

1965 Sekio Fuapopo traveled last fall to Idaho Falls, Idaho to enjoy a vacation.

It was his first time making the trip.

1966 Robert W. Higgins Sr. retired from T. Rowe Price in 2011 after working 17 years in the information technology division as a vice president of their change management operations.

Robert and his wife now reside in Florida, living on a golf course and enjoying their 46 years of marriage.

Higgins’ son, Robert, graduated from Calvert Hall, a Christian Brothers high school, then Towson State University with a degree in art, and from Johns Hopkins with a master’s degree in special education.

Pat Mangini Jones became a grandmother twice in 2012. Last April, she welcomed the arrival of her granddaughter Keela Jeanette Jones, and in May, she welcomed granddaughter Olivia Raye Jones.

1972 Tony Fernandez and his wife Patricia enjoy traveling to different baseball parks across America. Last August, they visited the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, and they caught a Giants vs. Astros game in Houston.

The couple just needs to see both Florida teams and the Toronto Blue Jays in order to complete their major league baseball stadiums tour.

1958 William Nocetti still lives in San Francisco. In October 2012, he attended a small reunion luncheon with his classmates and other alumni.

Pete Siragusa’s daughter, Kristen, was married on August 25, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Church in Marinwood.

In attendance were John Scudder Jr. ’73 and Bishop Tom Daly ’78, who officiated.

1977 Jim Gallagher lives in South San Francisco and has his own contracting business.

Ed Vigil lives in Pacifica and works in San Mateo as a manager for public works. Vigil is an avid San Francisco Giants fan and has attended many home games this past season.

Thomas White lives in Loomis, California. He enjoys cycling, kayaking and many outdoor activities. He often frequents the Lake Tahoe area with his family and coaches his kids’ baseball team.

Dorothy Linebarger Chaknova recently became a proud grandmother to granddaughter Ava. Kathy Mangini moved to Daly City last summer, and is enjoying her new home. She had a great time at her 40-year reunion.

Jon Hayward lives in San Francisco and works as a consultant. Last fall he went on vacation to Italy.

He’s an avid San Francisco sports fan and last October he went to a double-header, seeing the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park and then the Giants at AT&T Park the same day.

1961 Edwin Calleja is enjoying his retirement and is living in Burlingame, California. He worked a total of 43 years as a superintendent at the waterfront, in San Francisco and in Oakland.

Dom Panina welcomed the newest addition to his family. Elizabeth Ann was born on October 7, 2012.

She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces.

1986 Nateena Ravare lives in Fairfield.

Since 2008, she’s been working for the investigative department for the State of California’s Department of Justice.

She also worked for the Sheriff’s Department in San Francisco as well as the Brisbane Police Department.

She has a daughter in high school.

Christina Lee has two businesses in San Francisco. She owns an organic tanning salon in the Marina District and she’s also an insurance broker.

Brother Postulant Patrick Martin is teaching religious studies full time at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. He is looking forward to entering the Novitiate program at Mont La Salle in 2013-2014.

1998 Jogreany Sosa lives in San Antonio, Texas. He is married and has three children (ages 12, 11 and eight). He is going back to school to become a nurse.

1992 Zachary Kellerman’s son Jacob was born December 16, 2009. He ended his seagoing career and became a San Francisco Bar Pilot in February 2010. Then on December 12, 2011, he and his wife, Andrea had a daughter named Shoshanna. They went on a family trip to Guatamala at the end of 2011.

Victoria Frings is acting on Broadway in the production Enemy of the People. She is the understudy for the lead character and is part of the ensemble.

Kristen Ramos is working in the radio and broadcasting industry.

2005 Matt Branch is a marketing manager in Dallas, Texas. Over the summer, he visited Spain for a couple of weeks and met up with his brother Zach Branch ’09 in Pomplona for the Running of the Bulls.

1989 Craig Gianinno, head baseball coach for Junipero Serra High School, was named Baseball Coach of the Year by the San Jose Mercury News/Palo Alto Daily News on June 8, 2012.

He is humbled by the honor and gives all the credit to his players.

The Padres won the West Catholic Athletic League and made it to the Central Coast Section playoffs this past year.

2000 Paul Doherty is in his third year as head football coach at Sacramento High School. He has led his team to three consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berths. This year, Doherty led the Dragons to an 8-2 record and hosted a playoff game for the first time in school history.

Sacramento High School was the #7 seed out of 16 teams in the D3 SacJoaquin Section Football playoffs.

Marika Stephens is a graduate of UCLA and is working as a set designer for a number of productions in the Los Angeles area.

Kelly Lehane is living in the East Bay and works with the Firehouse Arts Center in Pleasanton. She also works with Alejandro Torres ’07 doing properties/set design for a production of The Bald Soprano, which Torres will be directing in San Francisco.

Melanie Ramos is enrolled in a master’s program for occupational therapy at Samuel Merritt Univeristy.

2008 Caroline Cabrera is at San Jose State University, where she is earning a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering with a minor in engineering management and humanities.

Nicole Cheong was selected The Press-Enterprise/PE.com’s Performer of the Year. She plays volleyball for La Sierra University in Riverside.

Stephanie Joyce de Lara graduated from the University of the Pacific on May 5, 2012, with a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences, with an emphasis in predentistry and a minor in business management. She plans to go to the Arthur Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Chris Masoud graduated last year from Notre Dame University. He moved back to San Francisco and is looking forward to reconnecting with the school through upcoming alumni events.

Nate Brugnara is working for a commercial real estate company in the peninsula. Last summer he reconnected with the school by attending the Young Alumni Night.

He lives in Daly City, California.

2007 Alanna Fox was recently in the play New Georges. She’s also an extra in the movie Mavericks. She is enjoying life in New York City.

Zach Branch finished a summer internship in Barcelona, Spain this past summer. He is in the Eller School of Business at the University of Arizona, majoring in Management Information Systems with a minor in Spanish.

Eric Joseph “EJ” de Lara was a recipient of Loyola Marymount University’s Service & Leadership Award in 2012, and was recently elected by the student body as Senator of the Associated Students of LMU. As a freshman, de Lara was named Student Advocate of the Year.

He also serves on the Executive Board of the LMU Special Olympics Committee. Just before the end of the school year, de Lara was offered the position of vice president of the residential housing executive board.

This past summer, he interned for both Congresswoman Jackie Speier and Greenpeace.

Ryan Powers was interning in Barcelona, Spain this past summer.

Powers and Zach Branch ’09 were roommates at the campus of the University of Barcelona.

Bart Sullivan is studying at the University of Arizona and lives offcampus with former classmates Eric Barreneche ’09, Ryan Powers ’09 and Zach Branch ’09.

Andrea Martinez is in her senior year at Santa Clara University, earning a Bachelor of Science in public health. Martinez interned at San Francisco General Hospital this past summer.

Robert Carlson '07 checked in at SHC on May 15, 2012 to visit with his mom Shenny Carlson (SHC staff member at the DePaul campus). At the time, he was preparing for his graduation from St. Mary’s College, where he was also a member of their rugby team.

Ryan Powers ’09, Matt Branch ’05 and Zach Branch ’09 completed the Running of the Bulls in Pomplona, Spain on July 7, 2012.

Alvin Yu '07 visited SHC on October 12, 2012. He spoke to some students about vocations in Mr. Greg Schmitz’s Lasallian/Vincentian Leadership class.

It was Yu’s first visit back on campus since 2007. Yu is enrolled in the Archdiocesan seminary.

Will Lyons is a junior at the University of Portland, majoring in English and Spanish. He spent the summer studying in Santiago, Chile, with a new study-abroad program at the University of Portland. He studied Spanish and sociology, lived with a resident of Santiago and traveled to the high country desert area of Atacama. He also participated in community service work and created an outdoor landscaping project at a school for children with disabilities. Lyons is now in his third year working as the opinions editor for the student newspaper, The Beacon.

Tiffany Lam ’12 and Tejen “TJ” Patel ’13, who worked full-time at Stanford University as software developers, are standing with Stanford University’s Director of Education Technology Michael Rouan ’82. Lam and Patel worked on an Innovation Master Series program platform as well as the official Stanford University Windows 8 application, which was published in the Microsoft Marketplace.

Corina Mincin is earning a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering at the University of California at Davis. She also works an internship and volunteers in a lab at Genentech in Vacaville.

Ellie Quinlan went to Rwanda in May 2012 for two months to teach English and help with community development projects at an organization for genocide-victim widows and orphans. She spent the fall semester abroad in Paris.

Damon Wilson completed his second year at San Jose State University.

Running for Olympic Glory

For a school with no track, it is remarkable that Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory produced not just one, but two runners competing in the London Olympic Games last summer. Perhaps even more remarkable are the two women themselves. Shannon Rowbury ’02 and Tina Kefalas ’95 are two proud reminders to our SHC athletic community of the truly amazing results we can achieve with a little hard work and perseverance. OK, maybe a lot of hard work and perseverance.

Rowbury is a middle-distance runner, her specialty being the 1500 meters, an event in which she has now represented the United States twice in the Olympics.

Her path to Olympic glory started when she was an Irish dance student at St. Stephen in San Francisco. She tried out for cross country on a whim in the fall of her freshman year at SHC, and instantly found her niche.

Despite her quick success in the sport, she did not have Olympic dreams in those early days.

“I never really thought of it until my first Olympic year, I think,” she said. “My thinking was always that I wanted to be the best on the team. And then the best in the league. And then the best in the state. And then the best in the nation. I always set reachable goals for myself so the carrot wasn’t so far away I couldn’t see it. But when I reached it, I would always push it out further.”

She placed seventh in the 1500 for the US Olympic team in the 2008 Games in Beijing in the first year of her professional career. The London Games meant more to her because she “had had four years to think about it,”

she said. “My first Olympics had happened so fast I didn’t have time to really process it. But with London, I had time to plan and work and get hurt and get back.”

Standing on the line before the gold-medal race in London, she was nervous, but once the gun went off, she found calm. “It’s the same 400-meter track I’ve run on and trained on a million times,” she said. Perhaps, but there aren’t usually hundreds of millions of people watching all around the world.

Rowbury held her position on the rail near the front of the Olympic finals until the start of the final lap.

American teammate Morgan Uceny was one of several runners pushing up from the back and attempting to take control of the race from the outside on the curve.

Uceny’s feet got tangled with another runner and she went down, and in the chaos of athletes jumping over and around her, Rowbury dropped back into eighth place.

She never seemed concerned, however, and simply held her position on the inside. On the back stretch, she coolly passed two of the best runners in the world and then held her ground in the homestretch and finished sixth, improving on her first Olympic performance.

Kefalas’ Olympic story, like her race, took a little longer to complete. She had also been a standout in cross country and the middle-distance races at SHC and went on to run at USC. A great runner, but not in the state or national spotlight at as young an age as Rowbury, Kefalas ran for the joy of it. “I never kept a log or thought about what a training session meant or didn’t in the larger scheme of things,” she said.

She first decided to try the marathon in 2010 in order to compete in the 2,500th anniversary of the first marathon—that near-mythical Ancient Greek story of Phidippides running just over 26 miles from the site of the Battle of Marathon to Athens to declare that the undermanned Athenians had fought off the invading Persians. Phidippides announced the victory before dying of exhaustion on the spot. “I was surprised I ran the time

The school’s beloved PA announcer, Buckley has become a mainstay, working at girls and boys basketball, girls and boys volleyball and football games, as well as making daily announcements and working nearly all senior-night events throughout the year.

I did,” Kefalas said after she ran an Olympic-qualifying time, though before the official qualification period had started. “It felt relatively easy. I was completely unprepared for what was to come.”

What was to come was two years of frustration and pain, both physical and emotional. The London Olympic marathon was actually only the third she’d run in her life. She attempted to train through significant pelvic strains and inflammation and hamstring tendonitis, all of which started in that Athens marathon. She struggled to train enough to build up to that Olympic time standard while also keeping her body healthy enough to continue, and was essentially forced to put all her Olympic eggs in one basket—the Enschede Marathon in April 2012. The Olympic qualification deadline was in May and she would not have been able to run another marathon in time. She did qualify in Enschede, of course, and would have just enough time to recover and ramp up her conditioning for London.

“It was a hard time because I knew I could do it,” Kefalas said of her training period before qualifying, “but my body was resisting. In retrospect, I learned a lot about myself and my body, so I feel stronger coming out on the other end as a result.”

Kefalas said that the pressure of being in the Olympics manifested itself in a lot of tension in her body. She felt ready on the morning of the race, but had been dealing with tightness all week in London. She was on her intended pace up through the halfway point of the 26.1mile race, but knew there was something amiss.

“The rainy weather made the course more difficult because of the slippery cobblestone and constant sharp turns; it turned into something completely different than I was trained and prepared for. I was forced to constantly accelerate and decelerate, which puts a completely different strain on the muscles. The cramping started pretty early, but at a level that was tolerable. With each passing mile it just became too much to bear.”

The pain eventually overwhelmed her ability to continue and she stopped. Her coach made her way to her and attempted to console her. While waiting to be picked up from around the 20-mile mark, Kefalas asked to speak to her sister who was waiting for her at the finish line. Her Olympic dream would end with more pain and frustration, and she felt the weight of letting down her supporters, family, friends, coaches and countrymen.

“The conversation with my sister was just truly amazing,” Kefalas said. “We’re very close and she was able to see through the pain.” Kefalas saw no way out: She could not keep running and therefore could not finish the race. “[My sister] gave me the insight and the OK that finishing, however it happens, is what matters. I will be eternally grateful to her for that.”

“Well,” her sister said, “can you walk? Can you make it the last six miles? Just to finish.

Cross the line.” And with that, Kefalas shed her coach’s raincoat and walked (or perhaps stumbled) the last six miles of the race that once killed its most famous competitor. On her blog, she wrote, “For those of you who might be going through something tough or hard to get over, know that everything is possible, the strength exists, it is just a matter of finding the right key to unlock it from within.

And for those of you [who] have dreams that you’ve left behind or think are impossible—revisit them and make time in your life to pursue them.

The important thing for me to keep going forward is what I had learned from Coach Mohun back at Sacred Heart Cathedral: Just run to run, to enjoy it for itself, to do it because you can,” Kefalas said. “Everything else will come—or maybe not. I need to get back to loving the process again.”

A die-hard San Francisco Giants fan with an encyclopedic memory for sports, baseball is likely Buckley’s first love. “K-Buck,” as he is very affectionately known by Fightin’ Irish student-athletes, says that his most memorable day with the Irish started on the diamond in his junior year. “The Fightin’ Irish baseball team took on St. Ignatius at Moscone Field, and were trailing 3-0 going into the bottom of the 7th,” K-Buck recalls. “The Irish managed to come back in the seventh and won it in the ninth. Later that evening, the eventual CCS Champion boys volleyball team took on the very same Wildcats. After dropping the first set, they battled back to win the next three and take the match.”

Buckley hopes to make a career of his love for sports and announcing, and looks forward to working in sports communications in college.

Mourning the Loss of Brad Parker Tragically and suddenly, SHC’s Network Services Administrator, Brad Parker, passed away during a musical performance in Ubá, Brazil on September 23, 2012, at the age of 59.

Parker joined the SHC community in 2005 and was quickly respected and loved by all those who knew him. His technical expertise was invaluable in upgrading and maintaining the school’s technology infrastructure. Parker was a hardworking and dedicated employee who resolved technical problems throughout the campus. He had a great sense of humor, was kind-hearted, friendly, responsive, efficient and always available to lend a helping hand to anyone who asked (or even to those who didn’t).

Parker is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Carol, his daughters Olivia ’09 and Amanda ’12, his siblings and many other family members. The SHC community continues to mourn the loss of their dear friend and colleague. Although he lives in our hearts, Parker’s presence is sorely missed.
