sacred heart cathedral preparatory Excellence in Catholic Education since 1852 Enter to Learn; Leave to Serve Inspired by the Daughters of Charity and the De La Salle Christian Brothers, in partnership with families,
Dear SHCP Community, You are not dreaming; this edition of Second Century has arrived not too long after the delivery of the recent fall edition. We have decided to return Second Century to the quarterly production cycle of previous years. In doing so we hope that the information and news provided will be more timely to our readers. We hope you appreciate the changes, and as the year progresses we welcome your feedback. Comments can be directed to editor@shcp.edu. An initial positive outcome of the quarterly schedule is that we get to share much sooner the good news of the triumphant return of the Bruce-Mahoney trophy to its rightful place on Ellis Street. Congratulations to all, especially to the members of our football and men’s basketball teams. It is our intention to hold on to the trophy. Drop by the school to say hello to the “Mahoney” when you drive by Ellis Street; know that you are always welcome. Speaking of dropping by school, I hope you have been able to catch one of our shows at the Collins Theater. SHCP has always had a strong Visual and Performing Arts Department, and it is special to watch the students perform in a facility that is commensurate with their extraordinary talent. We have recently engaged the services of a new online ticket vendor. We hope it will make the purchase of tickets more convenient. You now will be able to purchase an assigned seat for a performance. We hope this improves the experience of our patrons. More changes to look for in 2012 involve our website. Our Office of Communications, in collaboration with our Department of Educational Technology, has been working on an update of our website. We have valued the input from our end users during the process, and we hope to launch the new website in July of this year. So keep your eyes open for the new shcp.edu. I congratulate our recent Hall of Fame inductees. I am glad that so many in the community turned out for this grand affair. Enjoy this edition of Second Century and look for the next magazine in early June.

In Partnership with Parents Celebrating Our Parents Association’s Time, Treasure and Talent by Sawson Jweinat
In an effort to provide the finest educational experience for their children and the next generation of students, our parent community gives time, treasure and talent to continue the growth of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory mission. Parents give generously of themselves not only for their children, but future generations that will enjoy the fruits of their labor. It’s a wonderful demonstration of giving that we see every day at SHCP. In addition to raising significant financial support through the Parent Pledge Program, eScrip, capital gifts and the Walkathon, parents give the very special gift of time. Through the Parents Association, parents organize community building events such as the Father & Son BBQ and Poker Night, Mother & Son Game Night, Crab Cioppino, Father & Daughter Evening, Mother & Daughter Spa Night, and Grad Night. Parents also volunteer to help at events 4

including the Clothing and Blood drives, Senior Retreat and student field trips. Involvement in these various events creates a deeper connection and more fulfilled experience than some parents might anticipate, and they therefore continue to stay involved after their child graduates. Parents of alumni continue to support SHCP by making annual gifts, attending events, and volunteering in a variety of ways. “After their children graduate, parents keep coming back because they truly enjoy being a part of the SHCP community,” says former volunteer coordinator Garrett Dempsey ’92. From 2006-2011, Dempsey worked in the Development Office as the annual giving associate/volunteer Coordinator. He worked directly with the Parents Association in managing volunteer help, particularly for the Spring Gala, the Parents Association’s largest annual fundraising event. In 1997, SHCP parents stepped in to provide leadership for the annual fundraiser and since then have played an integral role in the success in this annual auction/raffle dinner dance. In recent years, the parent leadership has transformed

this event, and since 2006, the parents have raised nearly $850,000 of net proceeds in support of financial assistance, faculty support and training, technology in the classroom, and construction of new facilities, most recently, the Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater. This year the Parents Association presents Irish Derby, Spring Gala 2012, which will take place on Saturday, March 31. It will be a race to the finish to raise support for SHCP students. The event includes silent and live auctions, a hosted bar, seated dinner, live music, dancing and raffle, and all are invited: alumni, parents, parents of alumni and
friends of the school. Celebrate the efforts of our parent community while raising support for our students, at this year’s Irish Derby, or purchase some of the raffle tickets that are enclosed. The parents hope to see you there. Working with the parents this year is Alexandra “Alex” Goldberg, who enthusiastically takes on the role of coordinating this effort. Goldberg has a great passion for philanthropy and service. “Giving is a natural choice,” she says. “Our innate love for humanity should be the only incentive.” Goldberg has volunteered at camps and schools and assisted at nursing homes and hospitals, and currently makes time to work at soup kitchens, underprivileged preschools and homeless shelters. Some holiday seasons she adopts a family to ensure that they too have a special Christmas. As a new member of the SHCP community, Goldberg is impressed with the strong support from parents she has worked with. “It’s amazing to see how much these parents are doing for future students,” she says. In recent years, the Parents Association has allocated the funds to provide the following: choral risers for concerts, orchestra shells, and a new Marley dance floor for use in

The Visual and Performing Arts program continues to take flight with tireless faculty who foster the growth of talented students, and the stateof-the-art Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater lends the atmosphere to learn and perform. The Instrumental Band at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory is thriving. Seasoned musicians playing with incredible passion and zeal set the mood, lift the crowd and add a melody to all SHCP events. Led by composer and instructor Ted Allen, the Instrumental Music Department has developed into a high-caliber team that includes wind, string, percussion and jazz musicians. Allen’s extensive experience as a composer began after completing his bachelor’s at Pomona College and his master’s at the Yale School of Music. He has worked as a composer, arranger and orchestrator for Metallica, the San Francisco Symphony, Ozzy Osbourne, the New York City Ballet, the New York Pops, Microsoft and Sega, among others. His recent compositions include “Government Work” for the Oakland music teachers’ big band, and the choral work “Coyote Song/¡Ay! Susanita!,” which has been widely performed since its publication by Walton Music.

Over the past four years the Instrumental Music Department has doubled in size as students have been drawn to bring in their instruments and show off their talents. Not only does the band produce mind-blowing concerts, they perform at every game, rally, mass and prayer service—and consequently rehearse more often and work harder than ever before. “I believe the program has grown because the students are working harder, ” Allen explains. “We grow as family through playing. Students communicate through their instruments.” Mari Ma ’12, cello player, chorus and drama student, appreciates the growth and learning curve. “I really enjoy the opportunity to learn more about music through my practice. The more I play, the more I learn what types of music I love. Being a part of the band guided me to become an advanced musician.” SHCP’s winter 2012 concert, Metal Mania: The Dark Side of Rock and Classical, was inspired by a metal band of
four guitarists: Tyler Mahoney ’12 on lead guitar, Marissa Estonina ’12 and Markus Molon ’13 on rhythm guitar, and Tristan Arostegui ’14 on bass. “It was the instruments that inspired the most recent concert,” says Allen. If you attended the rocked-out concert, you might be surprised to learn that metal music is not a part of this generation’s musical upbringing. Students are attracted to play the songs that are loud, aggressive and include execution types of rhythm and melody. “It’s really cool to learn about how metal music came from the baroque era and how the sounds are shifted,” says Ma. “I love learning how music evolves through different genres.” The SHCP musicians will perform selections from their spring concert Up, Up, and Away: Birds, Planes, and Superman, including music from Apollo 13, Superman, and the U.S. Air Force march “Air Force Blue,” at the Sister Collins Theater on May 11.

Perhaps you would be surprised to know that the Fightin’ Irish’s current athletic successes are rooted in activities in the former mechanical drawing and typing rooms in the gym basement—but you wouldn’t be if you’d been in there since Colin Peuse joined the Sacred Heart Cathedral athletics family. In the 1980s those rooms began evolving into the current state-of-the-art weight room and conditioning space, and that evolution is far from over. Many alumni wouldn’t recognize their old classrooms from ages past, just as current students likely won’t recognize the weight room when they return in the future, thanks to plans to knock out yet another wall and expand even further. Peuse joined SHCP as the strength and conditioning coach in January 2006 and has been making an impact on the school’s athletics ever since. Says head varsity football coach John Lee ’84, “Without a doubt, hands down, the biggest and by far most important contributor to all of the athletic success at SHCP can be attributed to our strength coach, Colin Peuse.” TOP: (L-R) Coach Peuse works with Maria Lara ’12 and Ebony McKeever ’13 on their individual workout plans. While playing safety for the Occidental Tigers in college, Peuse studied kinesiology and history and went on to earn a Master of Science in exercise physiology to become a commercial athletic trainer. Before coming to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, Peuse was an assistant strength coach for the Oakland Raiders. Those years of experience have given Coach Peuse a crystal-clear vision for what it takes to prepare student athletes with what they need to succeed both in and out of athletic competition. To that end, if you venture down to the weight room on any given day, you are as likely to find

Speech and Debate Takes off at shcp by John Gumina
In addition to a rigorous college prep curriculum stacked with Advanced Placement courses, SHCP boasts a full complement of enriching cocurricular activities. While many preparatory schools refer to these activities as “extra” curricular, SHCP proudly refers to them as “co” curricular, believing that these activities are critical to a well-rounded high school experience. Like the academic curriculum, SHCP’s cocurricular opportunities continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of its 21st century students. Nowhere is that more apparent than with the recent success of the Speech and Debate program at SHCP. In 2007-08, Speech and Debate was revived thanks to SHCP valedictorian Michael Holper ’10, currently a sophomore at Georgetown University. “I was attracted to Speech and Debate because I enjoy engaging other people in contentious issues, and I find that generally in disagreement the truth can percolate to the surface,” he says. “I was thrilled at the challenge of making it a relevant club at SHCP.” Today, the Speech and Debate club proudly boasts 30 participants, up from a handful of members. Christine Buell, assistant principal for student life, is thrilled that the program has been reinvigorated with a talented new group of student and adult leaders. “Students will realize both short-term and long-term benefits from their active participation

in Speech and Debate,” she says. First-year moderator and admissions associate Jonathan Lim hopes to increase membership to more than 50 over the next couple of years. With a dynamic coaching staff and an intelligent group of debaters, the program is currently focusing on individual events as well as Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum debates. Lim expects to have all his debaters commit to four local league tournaments in the Golden Gate Speech Association per year. The club members themselves are also enthusiastic about their participation. Faithful debater Gina Campinelli ’14 says, “I absolutely love debate. It’s an enriching experience that has totally expanded my views on the world.”
Campinelli hopes to attend Princeton University and continue her debate career at the collegiate level. Yale professor Minh Luong would applaud these students’ cocurricular activity. “Colleges and universities today are looking for articulate thinkers and communicators who will become active citizens and leaders of tomorrow,” he says. “There is no better activity that will develop essential academic, professional and life skills than dedicated involvement in speech and debate.” With so much uncertainty facing today’s high school and college students, SHCP is committed to providing highlevel curricula and programs like Speech and Debate to prepare students for college and life beyond.

The Trophy Returns to Sacred Heart Cathedral by Scott Bergen
On Jan. 11, 2012, some members of the class of 2012 got to experience one of the greatest thrills a Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory student can have: They took a break from their classes, headed across town to St. Ignatius, and brought the Bruce-Mahoney trophy back to its original home. The previous night, the Fightin’ Irish men’s basketball team had won them the privilege by beating the Wildcats 45-37 in front of roughly 5,000 screaming fans at the University of San Francisco’s War Memorial Gym. The Irish football team soundly defeated SI 38-14 on Oct. 21, 2011, so the basketball team’s win was the trophy-winning second by the Irish in the annual best-of-three sport competition (football, men’s basketball and baseball). Between the two games, the SHCP and SI student-athletes performed in front of approximately 12,000 fans. Irish Athletic Director Jo Ann Momono praised the performances of the athletes on that huge stage, saying, “Our rivalry with St. Ignatius is a special one. Rarely does the average high school student-athlete get to compete
in the environment that is created by the Bruce-Mahoney games. And it is especially exciting when our students bring the trophy back to SHCP!” It is appropriate that the basketball game is played at War Memorial Gym each year, because the trophy’s namesakes, Bill Bruce, an alumnus of SI, and Jerry Mahoney ’44 of Sacred Heart, both served our country in World War II. The Bruce-Mahoney trophy competition is an annual tradition between the two schools dating back to 1947, though the athletic rivalry between the schools goes back to before the turn of the 20th century. Bruce and Mahoney were both athletic stars and leaders at their respective schools, and the trophy was established in their names to honor athletic excellence and the spirit of sportsmanship shared by both schools. Sacred Heart Cathedral Principal Gary Cannon addressed the historical significance of the trophy and rivalry at an after-school rally where the trophy was presented to the student body, saying, “We are so fortunate to have such an outstanding rivalry. Not only does it allow for great spirit-

building, but it is a tremendous reminder of our common mission as Catholic schools, and with the history of the trophy, reminds us of service to and sacrifice for others.” Cannon went on to express great pride in the hard work put in by the entire SHCP community, saying, “This is a wonderful celebration of our whole community, from the outstanding work of the band, the dance team, the fans, and of course the players and coaches.” In both wins, the Irish displayed excellence as team, as evidenced by the four players who scored touchdowns for the Irish and the fact that the basketball team held the Cats to just 37 points in 48 minutes of play. Among all the stars for both teams, two shined the brightest. Valentino Miles ’12 and Joshua Fox ’12, both seniors, no doubt remembered the last time the trophy was reclaimed from St. Ignatius, in the spring of their freshman year, but each probably feels a special bit of satisfaction this time around, as it was their contributions that most tipped the scales in SHCP’s favor. Miles racked up 385 total yards (of the team’s 456) and scored two touchdowns against St. Ignatius. Fox dominated the Wildcats in the paint in the basketball game, scoring a
game-high 13 points and collecting a game-high 11 rebounds. Special recognition is also deserved by several other studentathletes, including Zach Tapel ’12, Jack Harrington ’12, John Morello ’12, Khalil James ’13, Taylor Johns ’12 and Herman Pratt IV ’13. The baseball team will play SI on Saturday, March 31, at 11:00 am at AT&T Park in the Bruce-Mahoney baseball game, although the game won’t affect the trophy’s residence this year.

SHCP Heritage Society Continues Steady Growth Nearly 30 years ago, Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory established the Heritage Society to recognize the generosity of those individuals and families who have included the school in their estate plans. SHCP is stronger than ever thanks in part to bequests from many alumni and friends. SHCP added several new members to the Heritage Society last year, and 2012 looks promising for continued growth. “I think it is becoming clear to our stakeholders that the future of SHCP is in their hands,” said President John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73. “The costs of sustaining and advancing our mission are growing, and if we are to continue to provide access to young people from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as develop next-generation programs and facilities, the ongoing investment of non-tuition dollars from alumni, parents and friends will be critical.”
This past year SHCP received several generous gifts from the estates of both alumni and friends of the school—gifts that are having an impact on virtually every program and department. “We have been the beneficiary of both unrestricted support and gifts to our endowment,” said Director of School Advancement John Vigo ’81. “Gifts last year ranged from a few thousand dollars to six figures, and totaled nearly $500,000 of support.” In most cases, the individuals making these estate gifts had been consistent investors in the school’s Fund for Excellence and supporters of various events through the years. “These gifts are a testament to the wonderful work of the Christian Brothers, Daughters of Charity and dedicated lay faculty and staff through the years,” Vigo said. “People’s lives have been touched in a very meaningful way and they have made these gifts as a way to say thank you and help perpetuate this incredible educational mission.”
Planned Giving Corner Estate Planning or Life Planning?
When you hear the phrase “estate planning,” what comes to mind? Something that’s done by oil barons and hotel tycoons, perhaps? Maybe that reference is a bit dated. Today, a social network founder or reality star may come to mind. The truth is, distributing your assets after your lifetime is called estate settlement. Deciding in advance how you
want this done is estate planning. So now what comes to mind when I say “estate planning”? Maybe your home, car or retirement account? Perhaps a better term for estate planning is “life planning” or even “in-case-of-emergency planning.” When you don’t plan your estate, you are taking a risk by not having your paperwork in order. After all, many of us never get around to it. Most estimates show that half of all Americans pass on without a will, and that means the state in which you live will dictate how your property is distributed. That’s why SHCP is reminding you to take the first step in planning your estate by learning how to create or update your will. It is the single most important legal document you can own, and with the help of a good estate planning attorney, it may be easier to set up than you think.

Giving to SHCP by Bequest
Your future gift can help keep Catholic education affordable for future generations.
Make a Gift Now That Costs You Nothing by John Vigo ’81 During Your Lifetime When considering a bequest to SHCP, there are a few questions you should address. Will the purpose of your bequest be unrestricted or restricted? Unrestricted gifts are especially valuable to SHCP because they can be used most flexibly. Restricted gifts can support scholarship funds, capital initiatives or specific program support. Will your bequest establish a permanent endowment, providing income every year in perpetuity to carry out its purpose, or will the full amount of the gift be expendable? While both types of gifts are of great value to SHCP, an endowed gift will carry in perpetuity the name you have chosen. The advantages of bequests are many. A bequest to SHCP from your estate—whatever the amount, and whether it is unrestricted or restricted—is entirely free from federal estate taxes. This means that SHCP is able to use the full amount of the bequest, whereas if it were left to a noncharity, a significant amount might go to estate taxes. Giving by bequest costs nothing now, yet it may give you a great deal of satisfaction to know that your future gift will live on. In addition, if you do decide to include SHCP 20
Winter 2012
in your estate plans, you will become a member of the school’s Heritage Society. Heritage Society members are invited to select events each year and receive a premium pass good for admission to all home athletic contests and various theater and choral performances. You may make a bequest to SHCP from your estate by signing a new will or trust instrument, or by adding a codicil to your present will or an amendment to your present trust amendment. To ensure that your exact intentions are followed, estate planning documents should be prepared in consultation with your attorney and, with respect to provisions for SHCP, with the Office of the President at SHCP. Bequests may identify a dollar amount or a specific asset such as real estate. They may also specify a percentage of the estate, the entire estate or a residue of the estate. Whether you want to support a specific scholarship fund or SHCP at large, we ask that you consider discussing your designation with us so that we will be able to use your gift appropriately.

An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch...who raps? They’re all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of The Princess Bride becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. Features Andrew Murphy ’13 as The Baker, Gemma DeLeon ’12 as The Baker’s Wife, Arianna Tolentino ’12 as The Witch, Mari Ma ’12 as Jack, Chelsea Davis ’13 as Jack’s Mother, Kelly Monfredini ’12 as Cinderella, and Lucas Bartholomew-Good ’12 and Evan Linsey ’12 as the Princes. Narrated by To Kill a Mockingbird’s Gareth Marsh ’13.
