A Message From President Scudder In September of 1999 I began my Second Century letter with the following words: “I write my first letter for Second Century, poised to begin Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory’s third century of educating young men and women in San Francisco.”

Since those days some things have changed and some things have remained the same. What has remained constant is the love and support of my family, Judy, Annie ’02 (husband Remi), Molly ’03 (fiancé Kyle), and the commitment of the Brothers, Daughters and our generous benefactors to the mission of SHC. The fraternal and sororal relationships developed between our teachers and students have also remained constant. No matter the year, our students know that we care deeply about their well-being.

What has changed is the way we deliver our curriculum. Over the years, under the leadership of Ken Hogarty ’66 and now Gary Cannon, learning has become a collaborative exercise. It has moved from a teacher-centered to a student-centered endeavor. In 1999 we wondered if the school’s computers would continue to function in Y2K. Now every student brings his/her own device.

Our facilities have also undergone incredible changes. Thanks to everyone in our community, SHC now has a beautiful modern campus that complements our ability to provide the finest education in an inclusive Catholic community of faith.

I will close this letter the same way I closed my letter in 1999, “I look forward to the task ahead, and I commit myself to the mission of Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. Fulbright Awardees Abroad

T

ina Novero ’00 and Tracey Lam ’07 may have never walked the hallways of SHC together, but today, they share an incredible accomplishment. Both alumnae received Fulbright awards

last year, bringing Novero to the Philippines and Lam to South Korea in service of both the United States and their host countries.

Fulbright grantees are selected based on academic and professional achievement and leadership potential.

Fulbright alumni have achieved distinction in science, the arts, philanthropy, education and many other fields. Forty-four Fulbright alumni have been awarded the Nobel Prize and 78 alumni have received Pulitzer Prizes.

Novero received a scholarship under the flagship Fulbright Program to research and implement servicelearning programs that better serve women living in the slums of Manila.

Novero is working with De La Salle University de Manila for her research entitled “Opportunities for Women Living in Extreme Poverty.” Novero shares, “My work is very much in line with the value of service-learning that SHC instilled in me.”

excelled academically. Ultimately, it was her passion for teaching and language-learning that led her to obtain a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in South Korea. Lam has studied Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Spanish and Korean. While fulfilling her fellowship in South Korea, she served as co-director for public relations at the Korea Bridge Initiative, a non-government organization that strives to bridge the education gap for Korea’s low-income high school students.

Robert Duarte

’57

As a retired Navy Chief, Duarte always hoped to give back to war veterans. Ultimately, it was a chance encounter at Reagan National Airport in 2011 that led him to participate in the Honor Flight Network.

“As I waited for my flight, I heard a band playing and people cheering at the next gate. I saw older men and women receiving a rousing welcome from civilians and military members in uniform.” Duarte witnessed an Honor Flight bringing World War II veterans to visit their memorial in Washington, DC. The Honor Flight Network recognizes our country’s veterans by bringing them to visit and reflect at their memorials in the nation’s capital.

“Considering that more than 600 World War II veterans die each day, it is so important to be able to provide this service to acknowledge and honor them,” Duarte shares. In the spring of 2013, Duarte accompanied World War II veteran Loyd Kussman to Washington, DC. They visited Arlington Cemetery, the Women’s WWII Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Throughout the trip, they were greeted with cheers, waving flags and love from citizens showing their appreciation for their service. Duarte and Kussman have since become close friends, often sharing meals together with their respective families. “The trip was a great success, and I will never forget my wonderful experience accompanying Loyd to his memorial.” To read Duarte’s full story, visit shcp.edu/alumni.

Betsy Alegria

While at SHC, Alegria traveled to New Orleans with our Venaver immersion program. There, she worked with the St. Bernard’s Project, an organization dedicated to helping disaster-impacted communities recover. “Looking back now, I see how the trip influenced my studies and my life.” Now wrapping up her second year at Stanford, Alegria continues to answer SHC’s call to serve. This spring, she will lead a cohort of her peers on an alternative spring break trip through Stanford’s Haas Center for Public Service. Alegria shares, “The Alternative Spring Break program exposes students to different social and cultural issues through community visits, direct service, discussions, readings and reflection activities.” Her trip is entitled Approaching Autism: A Walk Through the Spectrum. She hopes the trip will deepen her understanding of children with autism spectrum disorders and educational opportunities that are available to them in the Bay Area.

Last Thanksgiving break, Alegria also participated in a service trip to Dorothy’s Place, a local human services agency named after journalist, social activist and Catholic Worker movement founder Dorothy Day. “I saw the tiles that different schools decorate on their interior roof and came across a few from SHC. It was great to see my high school so involved around the community!”

Rick Delgado

’06

“SHC instilled values like empathy, dedication and compassion,” Delgado describes how SHC guided him toward a career in service. “All of these things came together and when I graduated, I knew I wanted to help people in my community.” After graduating from SHC, Delgado went on to receive a bachelor’s in justice studies and was placed at StarVista in San Mateo as an Americorps VISTA member. While at StarVista, Delgado served as a suicide crisis line operator, which sparked his passion for suicide prevention and education. “Suicide is one of those things that isn’t talked about. And if kids don’t talk about it, what are they going to do?”

Today, Delgado continues to volunteer at StarVista and serves as the children’s case manager for Family Crossroads, a homeless family shelter in Daly City. He is proud to remain closely tied to his local community.

“Too often, we forget about what is going on locally, and I’ve always known I needed to help the people in my own community succeed.” Between his full caseload at Family Crossroads and his volunteer position at StarVista, Delgado returns to SHC every year to educate our students on suicide prevention.

Kiva @ SHC

Transforming Students into Social Entrepreneurs

I

n Zimbabwe, Jane is able to stock her grocery store, the profits of which help to send her three children to school. In the Dominican Republic, Bernardo is able to pay his college tuition so that he can study industrial engineering and bring his family out of poverty. In Guatemala, Eustaquia is able to purchase alpaca yarn so that she can sell her handknit clothes to help fund her young son’s education.

Jane, Bernardo and Eustaquia are just a few of the incredible people SHC’s Class of 2013 empowered through their service-learning project with Kiva last year, and this year’s senior class is slated to bring their Kiva service-learning project to greater heights.

San Francisco-based Kiva is committed to connecting people around the world through lending to alleviate poverty. Kiva believes that providing safe, affordable access to capital to

those in need helps people create better lives for themselves and their families.

Inspired by Kiva’s mission, a group of SHC faculty members explored ways to integrate the Kiva model in the classroom. The Social Studies Department— with its economics classes and lessons dedicated to entrepreneurship, social justice and personal finance—held the most meaningful application for the partnership. For the second year in a row, seniors come together to raise money to finance loans to Kiva borrowers. Working with either their AP Government or Economics classes, students are tasked to start their own business, sell their service or product, and use the profits to fund Kiva loans.

Instructor of Social Studies Abi Basch shares, “This service-learning project translates perfectly into our curriculum and mission. The students apply for loans themselves in order to start businesses that ultimately benefit Kiva borrowers. The project prepares them for life after SHC in so many

ways—it teaches financial responsibility, inspires an entrepreneurial spirit, it teaches a deeper social practice and offers a real-life connection to our mission.”

The idea is simple. Project student-leader Eugene Shekhtman ’14 explains, “Individuals like you or I go online to Kiva and lend $25 to a stranger. The person we choose uses our money to improve her/ his business—to buy a sewing machine or tractor or tree or livestock—and makes a profit. Then that person pays this money back through Kiva, who pays it back to you. And suddenly, with $25 back in your pocket, you have helped someone halfway across the world and it didn’t cost you a dime.”

Students explore many facets of entrepreneurship by writing business plans, applying for loans and creating businesses that sell their products. Their businesses generate profits offering their wares to SHC faculty, staff, students and parents at the Kiva Carnival, held on campus in the spring. Goods and services range from handmade clothing to homemade pastries to games like Pin the Beard on the Principal.

Last year’s project was so successful that Kiva invited Basch to speak at their inaugural Kiva U Summit in the fall. At the summit, students and educators from around the world gathered to discuss ways to take action to expand financial inclusion and alleviate poverty. Basch was accompanied by six of her students who now serve as the student leaders of the project this year.

Juniors interested in leading their service-learning project next academic year have been offered an immersion trip to the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to see, first-hand, the ways in which microcredit has helped one of the most impoverished communities in the United States.

Basch shares, “People in the Lakota community are addressing key areas that affect poverty: health, education, financial literacy, access to capital. It’s a tremendous opportunity for our students.”

The Kiva service-learning project allows our students to gain a greater understanding of the cycle of poverty while challenging them to become social leaders and actively address debilitating economic disparities in the global community. Basch reflects, “The project has inspired a remarkable sense of leadership in our students. The greatest innovations in this project have come from them.”

The senior service learning project with Kiva is perfectly timed as these students prepare for life after graduation. Basch explains, “This project is not charity, it is about our students working together to create real change in the lives of others. As they go out into the world beyond SHC, we want them to continue to think about those that do not have access to the incredible education they’re getting here.”

“W

ith faith and good intentions, good things come. Hope comes. And hope is contagious.” Instructor of Religious Studies Ryan Darmody describes what his students experience in his Theology of Service class as he makes his way to various service sites in the Tenderloin. The class combines philosophical and religious theories of justice with service internships at local organizations.

Students choose from service sites such as Project Open Hand, the Tenderloin Community School, Central YMCA and our sister school, De Marillac Academy.

Once students select a site, they spend one class period each week over the course of the entire academic year working together in service pods. Students do not swap or request a different site at any point throughout the year; they are committed to their sites entirely. Darmody reflects, “Consistency is so important to the communities we serve.” Often, those that live on the margins experience very little consistency in their lives. The next meal, another night in transitional housing, necessary school supplies—the attainment of these essentials is uncertain. The presence of Darmody’s students at their service sites provides a consistency the community can depend on throughout the year. “Over time, the people our students serve recognize their faces, they know their names, and they become part of their community. Over time our students see those they serve as a person in need, then as a person, then a person they know.”

Our Founders created a service tradition that is one of the defining characteristics of the student experience at SHC. Students engage in meaningful service-learning projects each year of attendance. They work in collaboration to apply what they learn in the classroom to bring true value into the community— locally, nationally and around the globe. This year, freshmen will work with their physics classes in the community. Sophomores will serve at St. Anthony’s Foundation, and Juniors will team up with their Languages Other Than English courses to use their target language in a service project of their choice. Seniors will partner with microfinance organization, Kiva, to finance loans that help individuals raise themselves out of poverty.

Athletic coaches organize service projects for their teams every season. Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach Darrell Barbour and his team donated blood at this year’s blood drive, and our soccer program partnered with Lose the Shoes to raise funds for HIV/AIDS prevention and education in Africa.

Faculty members across all areas of learning integrate service into their classes. Instructor of Science Phi Li recently led his Biology class in habitat restoration in the Presidio. Instructor of Science Tom Farrell leads his students in the preparation of thoughtful

The list of service opportunities is seemingly endless and given that so many SHC students actively seek service engagement, it is surprising to know that SHC does not mandate service hours. Rinaldi shares, “We want to cultivate a culture that encourages students to live the gospel and use their gifts, talents and passions for the benefit of others. Service-learning at SHC is not just a checklist. Our students make real connections between the spiritual and emotional aspects of this work. We want them to use what they learn in the classroom out in the world.”

Back in the Tenderloin with Darmody at Project Open Hand, a local organization that provides meals with love to seniors and the critically ill, Theology of Service student Rachel Lopez ’14 shares, “People genuinely appreciate us being here. I’m taking American Sign Language, and I’ve been able to use it to communicate to deaf clients. It’s awesome to see their reaction when they realize I can sign, too.” Real-world application of their talents is just one of the many lessons SHC students learn while immersed in the community. Darmody explains, “They are gaining so many skills that they don’t even know they are developing. They learn responsibility, how to work collaboratively, how to function in a professional environment.”

SHC actively seeks out ways to integrate technology and leverage the tools our students find most relevant to their lives, academically and personally. This is true across

all areas of learning, including service projects. Theology of Service (@TheoServSHC) students use Twitter to tweet about their experiences at their service sites. On a practical level, employing social media into Darmody’s lesson plan allows students to remain engaged with one another while they work at different sites. It also creates a sense of community and solidarity among classmates when they are able to converse with each other about their experiences in real time.

Arriving at DMA. As my group worked together on grading papers, we enjoyed every minute of it. With more hands, we can achieve more. #shctos Service opportunities at SHC are abundant and allow our students to touch the lives of individuals around the world, they are initiated by faculty, staff and students alike, and most important, these opportunities are part of the fabric of our school community. SHC lays the foundation for students as they grow into young adulthood and leave to serve. Darmody says, “Right now, our students can share their time and energy. They may lack experience or money, but they offer what they can now, and what they can offer will evolve as they grow.

The point is that they continue to find ways to give.”

SHC Alumni Finding Glory on Rugby Fields

he Bay Area is a hotbed of rugby, one of the fastestgrowing sports in the US. Despite not having a team of our own, Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory has turned out some of the best players in the country.

are all SFGG members. The SFGG high school team also includes 16 SHC seniors, juniors and sophomores. Tony Wells, a current SHC parent, once served as director and head varsity high school coach for SFGG.

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Rugby Club (SFGG) is one of the nation’s premier clubs and features several SHC alumni.

Field of Dreams Dick Morosi ’61 remembers how everything fell into place the year his father took him to see the World Series at yankee Stadium.

M

y father, Angelo Morosi, was an avid baseball fan and semi-professional player who passed on to me his passion for baseball. We began playing catch and hitting “pepper” in our backyard when I was six. When I was seven, I graduated to Portola Playground where my father would hit ground balls to me at shortstop and pitch batting practice. Joe Gaggero Sr. would regularly offer encouragement from his kitchen window, which overlooked the baseball diamond. “Way to go, Morosi. You’re doin’ good!”

One summer afternoon at Seals Stadium in 1955 as my father and I watched our beloved Seals, he asked if I wanted to go to New York to watch the World Series if the Yankees and Dodgers played—a very real possibility.

I exclaimed, “Yes!” with an enthusiasm that exceeded my happiness when the Seals won a game.

Sinatra, Roy Rogers and famous restauranteur, Toots Shore, who gave me his Yankee hat. I only wish I had asked for autographs!

Our neighbor, Nate Scardiglia, was the secretary of the Forty Niners at that time and he had learned through the neighborhood grapevine (most prominent after Sunday Masses) about our potential trip back east. He let us know that Lou Spadia, the general manager of the Forty Niners and later its president, would not be using his box seat tickets at Yankee Stadium and he would gladly offer them to us. Everything fell into place.

Game seven was a Dodger victory, which resulted in their first ever World Championship.

The series went seven games and we saw them all. Our box seats at Yankee Stadium gave us access to celebrities like Ty Cobb, Frank

The day we were scheduled to fly back home, my dad asked if I wanted to stay for more sightseeing. Who wouldn’t trade a school day for one more day in New York City? Our decision to stay was a fateful and foreboding one. The plane on which we were originally scheduled to return to San Francisco tragically crashed, and no one on board survived.

I came back to San Francisco with wonderful lifelong experiences, a new respect for life and a curiosity about divine intervention.

When you think about adjectives that might describe athletes, you think of words like strong, fast, graceful, determined, hard-working or competitive.

Many people think of a different set of words to describe an SHC student-athlete.

Selfless, giving, caring, humble, kind or humanitarian come to mind.

student-athletes continue our Founders’ legacy through compassionate service every season. Our student-athletes engage in simple everyday acts of service like the freshman football players who cleaned the field after their classmates finished lunch at the freshman retreat or the girls tennis team that served at a beach clean-up day in the fall. They also engage in larger service projects: the boys and girls swim teams are gearing up to volunteer at the Special Olympics and the softball team has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research.

Why do SHC teams take the time out of their season to help others? The girls lacrosse team serves at St. Anne’s Home and the San Francisco Food Bank. Head Coach Tiffany Basilio explains that engaging in service inspires leadership and opens doors to giving even more. “They realize what they’re capable of in terms of helping out their community. They understand how fortunate they are and they’re thrilled to contribute in any way they can. When our teams engage in service projects, they are motivated to do even more.”

One of the most notable examples of service and athletics is the Serve It Up Founders Classic, a tournament hosted by SHC’s Girls Volleyball Program in the fall of 2013. The tournament brought together three other Lasallian high schools in a round-robin competition last September—Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento and La Salle Catholic College Preparatory in Milwaukie, Oregon. The day before the tournament began, the Fightin’ Irish joined their Lasallian family to work at seven different sites through San Francisco. The teams, coaches and parents collaborated with the other schools—not in competition, but in compassion.

They made keepsakes for foster kids, taught

volleyball at an after-school program, visited with veterans and distributed bag lunches in the Tenderloin. Proceeds from the tournament benefited charities that help people here in San Francisco, and across the world in Thigio, Kenya.

Coach Basilio summed up the importance and value of service opportunities to our studentathletes, saying, “It sends a strong message to the school community that our athletic department isn’t just about wins and losses. They have a bigger picture in mind for our student-athletes— they understand that serving their community and being a role model is just as important in the development of the student-athlete as daily practices.”

Loyalty & Service A President ’ s L egac y For John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73, this year marks a milestone 15 years of service as SHC’s first president. Today, he is defined by the same values that he brought to his role in 1999: loyalty, faith and commitment to our students.

ver the course of nearly fifty years, John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73 has shown extraordinary loyalty and commitment to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory and to the Lasallian and Vincentian values that helped shape him. His thoughtful presence has been a steady beacon guiding SHC through decades of change while perpetuating the spirit and vision of our Founders in the hearts of all members of our community. As we celebrate Scudder’s 15th year as president, we look

upon his history at SHC with great fondness and gratitude for the legacy of commitment and service he has built.

Scudder began his SHC journey in 1969 as a freshman at Sacred Heart High School. Upon graduating in 1973, Scudder earned his bachelor’s from St. Mary’s College and went on to earn a master’s in secondary education from San Francisco State University.

Answering SHC’s ultimate call to action, Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve, Scudder returned to his alma

mater where, for the next 34 years, he served as teacher, coach, dean, principal and president.

There is no aspect of Scudder’s life that does not include SHC. He met his wife Judy at Sacred Heart while he was an Instructor of Social Studies and she served as librarian and the very first woman faculty member employed by the school. Their daughters, Annie ’02 and Molly ’03, are both SHC alumnae, and Judy is now Director of Library Services. Scudder reflects upon the reason he has remained committed to the SHC community, “My constant focus is on the well-being of our students. That is the heart of the mission, it has always been about the students.

Our students are the best—they are gifted, warm, welcoming and humble. All of us committed to this mission would do anything for them.”

Scudder’s dedication to SHC students is not bound by the hours of the typical work day. Like a true visionary leader, Scudder has been known to wake at all hours of the night, inspired by an idea or epiphany that will ultimately support the students for whom he cares so deeply. During a semesterlong research sabbatical in 2012, when the Scudders traveled Europe visiting and studying historical Lasallian and Vincentian sites, Scudder had SHC on the mind every moment. Judy shares, “We visited a tiny village in the Italian Alps, and he woke up before dawn to listen to an SHC basketball game broadcast on the Internet.”

DC, Student Life Center Pavillion and Dining Hall, the Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater, the Fitness Center, the weight room expansion and the science classroom improvements. His vision and leadership have helped create relevant, state-of-the-art academic facilities that support the rapidly changing

De Marillac Academy provides a tuition-free, quality Lasallian and Vincentian education to children from low-income families in the Tenderloin and other underserved San Francisco communities.

Scudder also led the creation of SHC’s successful Piro Program, a program that grants scholarships to students in need. Participants in the program receive nearly full tuition assistance and tremendous academic and personal support. Scudder reflects, “We are proud to serve our Piro Program participants.

Rooms That Rock Renovating with Love & Beauty

The Daughters of Charity have always inspired Nancy Linebarger Ballard ’69. “They taught us compassion and caring for others. I carried that my whole life.” Sixteen of her family members are SHC alumni, including her father, husband, brothers-inlaw, siblings, daughter and nieces and nephews. With such an extensive family history at SHC, it is only natural that Ballard feels a strong desire to serve her community. She shares her story of creating Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo (RTR4C), an organization dedicated to creating peaceful environments for patients receiving chemotherapy treatments.

I

t all began with a simple philanthropic gesture. I was not looking for a job, a project or a volunteer opportunity.

In 2011, at 60 years old, I was enjoying an early retirement, planning my daughter’s upcoming wedding, enjoying two grandchildren in St. Louis and preparing for another grandchild due in several months. I was enjoying 35 years of marriage with my husband, Mario ’70, a retired San Francisco fireman. I had earned a master botanical illustration certificate in October 2009, and I was happy with my newly found art career. I was at my doctor’s office when a nurse asked if I would donate a botanical painting to their dreary

chemotherapy rooms. With the Daughters of Charity in mind, this is how the Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo project started.

When I was given a tour of the chemotherapy rooms I burst into tears. The walls were two-tone from the removal of old art. Nails and cracked plaster were quite visible. I knew one piece of art wasn’t going to make a difference.

I had almost no spare time, but those rooms haunted me. I knew I needed help to make a difference.

I reached out to 20 local interior designers, and within three days, four responded enthusiastically and volunteered their time for the first Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo project.

by Nancy Linebarger Ballard ’69 Since my initial visit, talented teams of room-revamping volunteers, designers, local vendors and sponsors have transformed 12 bland facilities into vibrant, warm and lovely environments that provide a positive atmosphere to the dreary circumstances that often fill treatment rooms. In my wildest dreams, I had no idea that two and a half years later, these transformations would affect 785,000 patient visits each year!

Until we are intimately involved, we are not fully aware of the all-encompassing toll that a cancer diagnosis has on a patient and his/her family. Entire lives are turned upside-down; worries about one’s prognosis, finances, legacy and life all come

immediately to the forefront of our awareness. At these times, even the simplest acts of kindness have incredible, lasting effects.

RTR4C’s pioneering work to transform uninspiring spaces into vibrant works of love, compassion and creativity bring the comfort of beauty and peace to those suffering.

In 2014, we will transform the entire 10th floor chemotherapy unit at Seton Hospital in Daly City and will also work with the San Francisco Giants on St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco.

Many cancer patients spend long and painful hours in chemotherapy treatment rooms where they receive medicine and often contemplate their lives.

The difference between a dull, gray tech-oriented room and one painted with uplifting colors, gentle lighting and thoughtful details can be profound.

class notes 1948 In February, Bill Henneberry and the 1951 Dons were featured in an ESPN documentary outlining the story of a football team that chose honor over glory when they supported their African American teammates.

This decision came at a high price: disqualification from post-season play.

Sixty-three years later, this courageous decision finally received the national attention it deserved.

1949 Al Menicucci has been living it up with his dog Frisco in Burlingame, Calif.

Since his retirement from Arc Electric Co., Al spends his time with other alumni, eats dessert every single day and dances to the wonderful tunes of the ’60s and ’70s. 

Cofounders Kelly Trevethan and Jean Hoefliger’s shared love of wine and dedication to making highquality education accessible to all inspired the creation of Speratus, a virtual winery that donates one hundred percent of its proceeds to help low-income families provide a Lasallian education for their children.

At SHC, 70 percent of funds donated by Speratus will support our Lasallian and Vincentian tradition, specifically through our successful Piro Program. 2000 William Murphy has worked in Minor League Baseball since he graduated from Loyola Marymount University. After three seasons with the Modesto Nuts, he moved to Santa Clarita in 2007 and now serves as assistant general manager for the Lancaster JetHawks. He was thrilled with the arrival of his daughter, Bridget Aida Suzanne Murphy, on February 8, 2013.

2002 Annie Scudder Gabillet married Rémi Gabillet on June 22 in Provence, France.

Danny Barrett recently competed for the USA Sevens Rugby team in the Sevens World Series in Las Vegas, where he scored a try in the opening match against Argentina. Barrett is training at the US Olympic Training Center and hopes to play for Team USA in the 2016 Olympics.

Lesley Alegria is in her fourth year at Cornell University and will graduate in May with plans to accept an offer to join Teach for America after graduation.

She currently lives in Washington, D.C., where she is an intern at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. She also buzzes on social media on behalf of Cornell K-12 Outreach and conducts research on diversity in museum attendance.

ongratulations to Walter Arnold ’57 on his induction into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame!

The 2014 Hall of Fame Banquet and Awards Dinner will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Patio Español Restaurant. Tickets can be purchased at cifsf.org/hall.

An all-city back at Sacred Heart High School, Arnold went on to play running back and fullback at Cal, leading the Golden Bears to the 1959 Rose Bowl, and was also named to the 1961 Hula Bowl All-Star Classic. He went on to coach football from 19631987, including a remarkable seven years as Bellarmine Prep’s Varsity Head Coach, winning three straight WCAL titles.

His 1981 Bellarmine Team was ranked No.  in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.
